Nate, You are spot on with this video. This has been nearly my exact experience as I have surpassed the 100k subscriber mark. Thank you for being one of the rare UA-camrs who actually talked about going beyond 100k subs. Most talk about starting a channel, getting that first monetization level... but in reality, if someone is serious about doing this, getting monetized is short-sighted. They need to be thinking way down the road and the steps to making this a real business (as you outlined). While I don't know that my niche (family history) will ever reach one million subs, that would be fun... who knows. Like the old movie said, "If you build it, they will come." Building it is creating great and valuable content. That is the mission. The rest (revenue and subs) will come over time. Enjoy the journey!

Great video Nate. I started my channel (purely for fun) 7 years ago and I'm likely going to hit 100K in January. A lot of the advice you had for the 10K channel size is spot on... although I'm conflicted about it. While my subject matter/niche did narrow over time I still stubbornly insisted to do other things I enjoyed... sometimes I regret it, but most of the time I don't because those videos often have more personal/sentimental value to me. But making the occasional random video likely did slow my growth and ability to do this as a full time gig.
7 years in I still do this part time, and still do it solo. I've edited every single video on my channel myself. I did try to bring on other people a few times but it didn't work out... even making some pretty generous revenue sharing offers, but for now this is a one man band. My daughter is 13 and she might start filming for me... but says she has no interest learning to edit! Darn it! LOL.
But in the end, I couldn't be more thankful. I was able to use the work samples from my channel to land a pretty sweet job in my industry (and leave the tech industry for good). Several videos on my channel will be so fun and rewarding to watch in 40 years (memories with family and friends). If it stays around this size and I never do it full time, that's fine for me. I'm just thankful to God and the 2k-5k core audience folks who come back and watch almost every video. It's about the coolest side hustle you could ask for.

Nate, your content is top tier! I recently discovered your channel and I find myself coming to it more and more for advice. I like how you don’t sugarcoat too much and you give us the truth, but you still manage to have an overall optimism with your delivery. What I’m getting from you is that this takes a lot of serious effort to make it work and if we’re not up for that then maybe we need to reevaluate or at least manage expectations and treat it more as a fun hobby. And if we aren’t having fun then why are we even doing this to begin with?

“Everything is pain!” 😂 Felt that, but one thing I can say for those who are still feeling discouraged is this:
    - The larger you get, the faster you grow! Once you reach the point where your video grows without you touching them, you begin to start thinking strategically, instead of hoping to get lucky.
Just stay consistent, and eventually you’ll find yourself in a good place. Just don’t forget you are running a marathon not a sprint! 🤙🏼🤙🏼

This was a really informative video. I always take a lot away from your content - thank you. And frankly, not just in terms of how to build my channel, but also how to deliver “educational” content in a dynamic style. I think you’re excellent at that, and I take inspiration from your videos to help me structure my own content (about how to build a career as a board game designer).
I’m at 17K subs after 12 years of regular video production. Slow progress! But I went from 9K to 17K subs in the last year, and your description of the 10K category sounds spot-on to me.
I am trying to move away from judging myself on subscriber count and instead looking at views. I’m sure MANY subscribers do not engage at all, so it seems like a crude measure. It’s also harder for me to compare myself against other channels when I look at views (which is good for my morale!!)
I had 538K views this year (double the number I had last year). That feels like a healthier metric to monitor.

Thanks for the video Nate - Long time viewer, might be our first time commenting (not sure)
Love watching your videos to give perspective on growing and ways to grow.
I am wondering if you have given thought to doing a video to help guide channels that aren't what I would consider "Talking Heads" videos where people are able to simply make content in their home with the resources they have. It seems this is the focus of other Help Channels like Think media, Vid IQ, and others.
For us, we are more of a Travel and Experience Review/Education channel and the obvious difficulty with that is that it's hard to make more content without traveling. So just wondering if you have thought about that for a future video. We love the idea of improving and growing but also don't want to go down the path of "What I packed for vacation" or "how to book a flight" cheese ball type videos.
    Thanks again.

Wonderful video Nate!! Just wanted to say thank you for all your advice and teaching. I am having my best month ever with my channel and mainly due to your training and my confidence that is growing due to your videos and classes. 😊

Nate - I love your brilliant concept of looking at developing/growing a UA-cam channel by comparing the phases to various life stages! I for one am certainly looking forward to getting out of toddler time😆(Yes. I took a bit of a break.) Love your take on things - always fun, entertaining and educational! Thanks!

Nate! I am so excited! This is the first time since finding you and binging your content that a fresh new video showed up! I so appreciate that you teach by example in addition to your visual aids and super helpful content. So stoked for this video 🎉

Quick question… do you just wear a lot of blue? Or do you sorta have a UA-cam uniform? If you have a uniform, would you make a video on that? bc I am so curious 👀🤓

Thanks for this Nate. This was very reassuring. I just recently passed 1k subs and am working toward my 4k watch hours (again believe it or not) and this was great timing to look into
Next steps as I head toward 5k subs 😊

I am in the same boat! I just got to 1,000 subs last week and working on watch time hours! We can make it if we do not give up!

This is great! Taking notes. We grew from 1000 subs In October to 6,300 now in December. One video took off and crossed 100k views. Now the rising tide is helping every other recent video. Thinking hard about how to build on that opportunity.

Started about 3weeks ago and one of my videos broke above 4K views, but the subs are about 49.
Its an interesting journey and I wish us all the best.
    Thank you, Nate

Hey Nate, thanks to your growth hacks Im able to grow my channel steadily. I got one request, can you please make a video on - signs you're going to succeed at UA-cam or something like that??? I have been searching for these kinda videos and I found none..all i see is - why 99% youtubers fail, why people fail on youtube etc etc shit. Nobody is talking about the signs that small and serious Youtuebrs need to look at which will sort of give them an assurance that yes, even if the growth is slow for them right now, these are the signs that they're doing everything right and they will succeed. PLEASE!!!! there isn't a single video like this on the entire platform.. we really need one.

It's nice to hear someone say you should analyze what parts of it you enjoy, what parts feed your creativity, before hiring out for help. I like the editing (as long as my recordings aren't a mess), and have honestly not looked forward to hiring an editor.

I think one of the things that I find myself is that instinctively you just want things to happen straight away when obviously that isn't going to be the case. Find myself gravitating to this channel for advice, so thanks for all you do!

What a great delivery! The only thing missing was Nate impersonating each UA-cam stage with custom clothing and acting. I'd LOVE to see that. :)
