Benicio's had a few instances of making changes that worked out the best. The accent he did in this, where everyone thought he was nuts for trying it is an example, but also his insistence for 'less' lines, in both Way of the Gun and Sicario where originally he had far more lines of dialogue. He knew that less was more, and created a more enigmatic character, who when he did speak, the audience paid attention. He's a clever guy, and an excellent actor.

Quite hard to believe that Siskel & Ebert somehow gave it thumbs down. It was certainly one of the best films of the 90s to revitalize the impact of the great reveal at the end.
I was 14, I was by myself, and I was flipping channels in the middle of the night. I flipped to HBO or something and this movie was just starting. I knew nothing about the film going into it. It is still one of the greatest film watching experiences I have ever gone through, possibly number 1.

I always wondered when exactly Verbal came up with 'Kobayashi". Of course he could have looked under the cup all the time off-screen. But no, there is an exact time, when he does that on-screen, right before our eyes: 57:47. You never learn out with this movie, that's great!
Watch him when he’s talking about the barbershop quartet in Skokie, Illinois. You see him glancing at the board for a second. A detail I always was impressed by was after Kujan asks who Keyser Soze is and Verbal goes “oh fuck!” Not only was it genuine, that was the point he has to pivot a little in his story because he likely was not going to bring up Soze at all until they learned about him. As new details came out to the cops, he’d have to weave them into his story. It’s so brilliant and really demonstrates Soze’s cunning.
Another genius subtle thing that can be seen on re-watches is the way Spacey's Kint character holds his cigarette in some scenes, which is apparently how Turks actually hold their cigarettes (usually). (12:27)

I agree with Gabriel that he and many actors are just playing aspects of themselves. But not every actor. Danial Day Lewis is a big glitch in the theory that actors are just playing themselves. I was stunned to find out how he usually is as a person, compared to most of his characters. Just the ones that still largely look like him, that is not the same person. But then roles like in Gangs of New York, or There will be blood? He became someone else for awhile, during the shoot. It was like a type of controlled schizophrenia. I had two friends that had schizophrenia, and I would drop by their place, to find they were someone else.

It had been done b4 by Hitchcock or in esb but the reveal about luke & vader was more a bombshell than twist. Chazz was the first choice for the detective but he had a conflict so al pacino was asked but he passed bc he just played a cop in heat. Micheal biehn was offered McManus but turned it down. He said it's his biggest career regret. I'm always intrigued by actors that were asked to be in a movie bc u wonder if it would change the outcome. I've come to the conclusion that it's meant to be. Like tom selleck was cast as indiana Jones but his tv show would not let him do it. I believe Spielberg always wanted Ford but Lucas refused bc he had already had ford in 3 films & did not want him to be his bobby denero to martin Scorsese. But with selleck out & principal photography about to begin they got ford. I think Ford fits the part so well that selleck in the part it may not have been as good. No insult to tom but im saying ford fit perfectly. I'm convinced if ford never played indy he would have been typecast as han solo. Anyway chaz was so good . He did not play the cliched detective. And it seems if "The Formula" isn't adhered to, it's impossible to get the film made by either no financiers will go near it, a studio won’t risk something unknown, etc, etc. This is no different than what has happened in almost all of the arts. Music is just one big formula...it's nauseating. Films are now CGI'd to death, they're no longer about telling a story...it's just about blasting every human sensory system to smithereens. The industry is now sooo condescending. It's as if everyone in the industry (except the writers and directors) believe so much that the audience can't think and we can't comprehend a dialogue...so they have to hold our hands throughout the film and that we require an interpretor (which comes in many forms, but we can see right through all that). And there can't be anything in a film that might confuse us; which could be a scene such as when the 5 felons were in lockup. Producer says: "No! The audience won’t have any stimulation with those men just sitting there having a conversation. How boring!" - Now, I'm not even being sarcastic. In films today, they have to have 2 scenes prior to that one just to make sure we are prepped and babysat to be told why these guys are just sitting there (having a conversation that definitely would be that way in real life). That's why we're stuck with nothing but Super Hero films. No storytelling can happen because the audience will be bored to death unless we're blasted with LOUD noises, fights, visual overload and on and on. Humans LOVE - and need - storytelling. It's who and what we are. We haven't stopped being babies with books or stories being told to us. We'll love stories until we're 6 feet under! We love hearing a story and allowing our minds to be taken over by what's next! There's the other film genre today that exists to steer your belief system as a whole or perhaps on just one point. The script is blatantly didactic from beginning to end. The writers and directors today want to force us to believe in a particular ideology or a new cultural piece that they want driven home (and if you don’t subscribe to it, you're an "...ist" of some sort). Just horrific. Just tell me a great story!! I love those lowlife criminals in Usual Suspects! So does everyone else! You're one helluva writer when you can get viewer to understand (not love) why Keyser Sozë had to kill his family. A "few simple lines" and suddenly you know what evil these 5 hard-core criminals are up against. Anyway, I'm done with my rant. Maybe it's that people can't write anymore and I'm pointing to the wrong guys. Or, maybe it's a vicious cycle; the writers know that the directors & producers won’t accept anything away from the condescending formulaic script.
Wooooow.... so the director wanted the line-up scene to be completely serious. That's crazy. I guess he understood afterwards that it was too authentic to leave out than trying to change it into something else. That part alone I've watched more than the movie itself lol. Even watching this BTS I went back a few times and cracked up everytime. Benicio del Toro's name is not acknowledged twice in this documentary when the rest are mentioned. That's pretty odd and shady.

Wow, this is as long as the real movie.
Wooooow.... so the director wanted the line-up scene to be completely serious. That's crazy. I guess he understood afterwards that it was too authentic to leave out than trying to change it into something else. That part alone I've watched more than the movie itself lol. Even watching this BTS I went back a few times and cracked up everytime. Benicio del Toro's name is not acknowledged twice in this documentary when the rest are mentioned. That's pretty odd and shady.
