I commend her for dancing with so much control and balance in a time when pointe shoes were even more painful than the ones now days (because most were probably ill-fitted). Not to mention she was BLIND for goodness sake! What a triumph!
Almost blind-- The poor woman had three surgeries to reattach her retinas and I can't imagine what 1940s eye surgeries were like. My mother was a nurse back then and she said for cataract surgery they used to put sandbags on either side of the patient's head and make them lay in bed for over a week to until their eyes healed ! Luckily her fellow dancers use certain colored lights near the stage and a wire at waist height to keep her from endangering herself.
For those making negative remarks, I saw Mrs. Alonso in several live performance. Alonso is not just a great dancer. According to outstanding critics, who knows about ballet, Mrs. Alonso is a Genius of the Dance. Who didn't have the privilege to watch one of her live performance, is too late for he or she to make a reasonable remark. The magic of Alicia Alonso was necessary to be experienced on stage: her artistic talent is out of this world. It will take so many years for a new genius like her to be born.
Cuba corazón Alicia Alonso was blind
@@amitidasworld8710 They know that if you read closely one of the lines said "who didn't have the privilege to watch one of her live performances" remarking that she's blind and cannot see even though they didn't say it directly
Anyone making negative comments is a fool.
Oh my God . she still kept amazing skills when she was so old with lacking conditions in that time. I'm sure that all Russian great dancers want to be like her.
If the performance was in 1963, my father, Benjamin Steinberg, was conducting. He had conducted her and Igor since the 1940's in the Ballet Russes and with ABT, and was the first artistic director of the Ballet de Cuba.
Barbara Steinberg did you study ballet?
this is film arounf 60s and yet the quality of her technique is somuch precise and brilliant than other dancers this days
+Daniel Sedo I believe she was 50 years old at the time.
She is spectacular. Her control holding a position is just breathtaking. And her musicality is just a delight. Those little jumps on pointe IN ARABESQUE PENCHÉ are beastly! and beautiful, just beautiful legs, not sticks.
Agreed! Alicia created that choreography and I believe even to these days only the Cuban National Ballet dances that. I remember watching an interview where I think Alicia called them "sauts sur la pointe en arabesque".
Really exciting to watch Ms Alonzo! Easy to see why she is assoluta. Wonderful artistry, technique for those days. It is amazing that she was 50 yrs old at the time!
It's testimony to the fact that when you let female dancers be a normal weight they can dance into their 40s and 50s like Fontaine, too. Balanchine really screwed up a lot of things, with his focus on hyper thinness and hyper extensions that injured peoples back's by the time they were 30.
Alicia Alonso, our last Prima Ballerina Assoluta of the world. Our last Grand Dame and Diva of the dancing world. One of the Greatest Ballet Dancers of all times and the most beautifully actress-ballerina that always disappear into her interpretations.
Probably her most important contribution to the culture of the world was that, together with Fernando and Alberto, she created one of the most unique, beautiful and extraordinaire classic ballet experiences: The Cuban National Ballet and the Cuban Classic Ballet Style.
Brava, Brava, Brava!!!
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!
I love it when she raises her eyes to the sky--I've never seen anyone do it so magically.
Jaja sieryo
No cabe duda de que es buena
Wow, I never saw this until now. Breathtaking!
Rest In Peace to this wonderful master of graceful beauty in movement
i saw her on the cover of the newspapper today, she says she is not going to have a successor to take over her compeny, and she is going to keep teaching, no matter how old she gets! i must say i think alicia shows us all what ballet is really about, not giving up :) and never doubting yourself! fact ballet is probably what has kept her in such good health! she makes me cry when ever she sings!
The people here that are judging Alicia Alonso dont know anything about ballet. Its awsome to have extensions like miko forgarty or Semionova or any one of the popular dancers, but really makes you a perfect dancer is not your extensions my dear is your control. For example,Have you seen the American Ballet Theater Swan Lake presentation? Of course she haves extension. But it looks like shes throwing her legs. Here we have control. Go ask any REAL choreographer What is better control or extension
No to mention this video is from the 60's so comparing this Young dancers to the legendary Alicia Alonso is Ridiculous I guess they know nothing about ballet history.
Well said.
Grande entre las grandes, Alicia de Cuba!
The style might be considered old fashioned but considering the period, amazing! the technique is still amazing......amazing....and the hops are out of this world!! WOW truly the Glory of Ballet.....and Cuba.
even by todays standards she is still technically brilliant.... i mean, those turns!!!!
The control on those pirouettes! 😍😍😍

yes for the back leg in toe hops! steady as a rock!
Legend. Rest in peace! 😔
Rest in Peace.. Love from India :)
Whatever they say about her.... might be true, but one thing is certain: She is a Great Ballerina and she went to U.R.S.S in 1957 representing USA (AMT) as the First American Ballerina (after the fall of iron courtain)
France sent Lianne Daydee and England sent Beryl Gray. What an honor!
jose ignacio Miranda She’s Cuban...
the iron curtain was a term used during the cold war that just ended with the fall of urss in 1991 tho
And Fonteyn was invited also!
@@sedekiman No, Mrs Fontayn was not invited then.
@@Mrturytury1 She went with the Royal Ballet in 1961 an was met by Ulanova.

Aww❤️
all i can say is WOW. no other words can be explained
Wow...Thats hard with open eyes. Think of how it would be if you were blind! Great job Alicia! :)
I have seen the Bolshoi and Kirov ballets as well as the National Ballet and Winnipeg Ballet of Canada and I must say that viewing the Cuban Ballet in Havana recently was a thrill. The discipline of the dancers the unity of hand and foot movement was to me almost perfection. I had not heard of Alicia Alonso and have been fortunate to view her wonderful style due to the internet and though she is now in her nineties, she is one dancer who will live in our hearts.
GRANDE ALICIA!!
HE IS AZARI PLITSESKY AND IS OUTSTANDING NOWADAYS MARVELOUS TEACHER
holy shit she's amazing
Beyond any doubt, she was the best of her time. One hardly sees nowadays such a performance. It seems to me that her technique remains unbeaten. The fouettes are paradigmatic. Her limpid and impressing technique are a statement of an epoch in which a prima ballerina considered the perfection of her act a matter of honor. Why should we conform to the random spinning of a Tamara Rojo or any other automat?
Encantadoramente magistral!!!!!! gracias
fabulosaaaaa
Bellísima!
I was a member of the Joffery Ballet and my Uncled partnered the Great Alonos while with Ballet Theatre the 1940's, and does anyone realize that she is almost totally blind? My coach, who danced with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, told me a story about when Alonso was with them that she had to have a light bulb so that she could tell where she was on stage, and once during the rehearsal the bulb burned out and she screamed bloody murder. She is a human wonder whose balance and control remains!
Alonso is an absolutely incredible, _gorgeous_ dancer!! And we’re so very lucky that there are so many fabulous examples of every single role there is, that the narrow, totally unsophisticated view of certain people that there has to be only ONE great dancer and that all others must of necessity be pulled to shreds in order for such eejits to be “right,” just cracks me up!! Go ahead, be “right” in your own tiny minds!! People like me, who love ballet in totality, without reservation, will all feel so sorry for you, as we appreciate the beauty and variety and sheer unbelievable strength of decades of dancers!!
bravo
viva cuba , viva alicia
Alicia..regia..la mas..descansa...viva la diva...
Wow Alicia Alonso Prima Ballerina Absoluta
Espectacular
Preciosisimo me encanta !!!!.
Come on girl show some respect for the BIG ONES in ballet, I myself STILL do ballet, and that doesn't mean I can compare or judge someone like Alicia Alonso.
was really good.and now great teacher
Great!!!! :)
Love it
you know the funny part of this is? I bet all the people posting the hater comments and don't even dance!!!!! lol I think she's off axis because of the shoes themselves, you they make pointe shoe more stable now than they did way back in the 50's & 60's.
que perfeccion dioos ............!!!
R.I.P. 💔
5 pirouettes. Almost blind.

Charmante présentation de danse classique.
That male dancer is Maya Plisetskaya's youngest brother.
bestiaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
@aculladelasestrellas siiii la vakita le queda super :)
Ottk she is BLIND !!!!!!!
2:19
❤️👄❤️WOW
OMG did anyone count the piruettes in the second portion. ""30"" I know of no other ballerina in the world that has done that. Not even Margo Fontaine.
@Sergio Efigenio
Well, 10 years later I am here to say that i've seen several ballerinas of nowadays doing 32 fouettés... it was Svetlana Zakharova and another ballerina whom I forgot the name
possible nobody note how good azari is?
Magnificent! None like this anymore :(...Also see the great Lupe Serrano
That was filmed in Havana in the 60s.
@SuperCubanforever that's true and venezuelan girls too!!
RIP
