This video was Taped: 1998 New York City, when she was 78 years old. She died on October 17, 2019. Two months shy of her 99th birthday.

My father, Benjamin Steinberg, conducted Alicia and Igor in the premiere of Theme and Variations. Balanchine purposefully chose a tempo that was too fast for her, so as she says in the interview, she gave him a heavy wooden baton. She would do what he said, but Alicia would never submit to being his muse like Tallchief or Adams, etc. She held her own.

Great comment. So interesting! Your father actually conducted at that time. Wow.

Very articulate ... when she talked about preserving T&V because future generations have a *right* to see it, it gave me chills

It would be much better to show some of her coaching rehearsal footage with this interview. Alicia Alonsa is incredible.

Hola, no tienen la grabación de los ensayos que le tomó Alicia a Paloma Herrera que puedan publicarlo?

Great interview - so articulate. I wish the Foundation would have had the counterpart interview with Igor Youskevitch on this same topic. He was equally articulate when he spoke about art and dance in radio interviews.

I cannot believe how brilliant Miss Alonso is, she is so well spoken and elegant and all under a communist regime, the Cubans do great ballet
