Even though technique from the waist down has evolved significantly, my god ain’t nobody got those arms. She will forever be the gold standard for the Port des bras of this ballet . She has the most legendary swan arms of legendary swan arms. And I feel bad for the man in this video because he is actually quite wonderful and we are all drooling over Maya but my goodness he is also quite technically proficient for 45 years ago. He actually has quite a modern aesthetic for a male ballet dancer considering it was 1978. Lovely lovely lines and gorgeous feet on him. Beautiful musculature and sound clean technique.

So glad you said that! Her hands and arms says so much more than that high leg...bravo! Little girls who saw her dreamed only of being or becoming ballerinas! Very influential dancer. May she RIP! She touched lives!
The drama is incredible. She is the most alluring Odile I have ever seen -- she pulls him to follow her through sheer force of will. It's extraordinary -- and at age 48! Just incredible! In addition to which -- that center. She hit attitude and BAM -- she doesn't move. Does a pirouette and BAM - she sticks it. I've noticed this in other performances I've seen of her. She is unique among ballerinas - something innately dramatic and extraordinary about her work.
I have actualy no expertise when it comes to ballett, but know a little about how acting, danceplays, acrobatic, what are the chalanges and what to look for . . . I'm totaly stunned, I've just watched odette and now odiele and the contrast in how they move is enormous, a whole diferent kind of energy to it, that woman is magnificent!
I have met Maya twice in the recent years, once in Germany and once in Armenia attending concerts of compositions by her husband. I felt so humbled and so honored to be in her presence. Over eighty years old but still stunningly gorgeous and a lovely person. One of the strongest presences I had ever felt in my life! Although completely different dancers, for me Plisetskaya and Ulanova are the best dancing artists who ever lived, their artistry (I don't mean technique) unmatched to this day!
She embodies Odile so well. There's an unapologetic ruthlessness and boldness to her movements that's extremely unique. Maya Plisetskaya's Odile is gritty, animalistic, fierce, dramatic, and glamorous. She completely pulls you in. All other versions of Odiles I've seen so far seem soft and delicate in comparison. I don't think any other dancer can pull off this kind of "harshness" in this role and still make it look so magnetic & elegant. Her stage presence is simply incandescent. 3:30 - 3:39 Her Odette is so fragile, pure, and vulnerable.
Molto bravi. BIGHIN GIULIO RENZO 😊😊😊😊
I find her neither bright nor seductive. Diana Vishneva, in comparison, is really bright and seductive and she does not need to try. Akane Tocada and Francesca Hayward are bright and seductive, and they do not need to try either. Plisetskaya can dance competently, but she is a bit of a lump.
That's mystery of Maya. At the age when most dancers are getting ready for retirement she came into her absolute best form. She is just scorching the stage as Odile here. I still want to see anything close to what she did in that role. There are so many talented dancers, the technique is uniformly so incredibly high these days across the board and yet... That amalgam she possessed of exquisite musicality, elegant sensuality and expressiveness of the utmost sophistication I just have yet to see. Call me names but she is irreplaceable.
People will be mesmerized by Plisetskaya videos long after many of today's supposed stars are long forgotten. There are very good ballet dancers and then, once in an extremely rare while, there is a great, completely unique artist. Maya was one of those. Don't expect another to come along anytime soon.
Had I been at this particular exposition, too late afterwards would I have realized that I should have slashed my wrists and bled to death right there in front of that stage. Watching it, and fully grasping what it was at the exact same moment, well... ...it's the very meaning of epiphany. You only 'see' deeply, afterwards. You're enjoying too much at the time, in the moments.
What an extraordinary beautiful performance. Strong, emotional, brilliant - in one word: perfection. She was one of the absolutely best!! May you rest in peace, dear Maya Plisetskaya! You will always be remembered fondly and with great affection!
Maya Plisetskaya's skills never turned rusty, thanks to her grueling training regime at Bolshoi! Her sense of aesthetics helped her develop her own style, which was unique!
The first time I saw someone do the dying swan was Maya and that made me want to perform as a professional ballerina and now I'm in love with it!! 14years of ballet and still going strong!! I love and miss you maya
This film show clips from all parts of Maya Plisetskaya's amazing career. She was a true artist. She tells the story with her technique but also her dramatic sense is impeccable. Bravo to a truly brilliant career. It is true she will be remembered long with true respect for her talent and her artistry.

The most amazing thing about this performance is the way she displays a story with she and Sigfreid. You don't see that to that level any more. The way she looks at him and conveys with her body the toying with him, the authoritative deception, the way they both look at each other and drawing back and then forward, that power dynamic. It's so beautiful. The great Plisetskaya. Kovtun did some wonderful steps.
I saw them at the Colon theater in Buenos Aires that year, 1973. They set the standard. It is in this manner, and no other, that this ballet ought to be performed.
This is not ballet - this is sorcery. No dancer can put a spell on the audience the way she could. What a goddess.
Sorry dear coldfreswater, she was not heavy ever.....Her acting is spot on and her dancing amazing........She has been retired for a long time now, don't you read the news.....She is a legend in dancing along with Galina Ulanova and Alicia Alonso...
Maya was never heavy in any sense of the word. But her body, in today's ballet world, would not be considered 'ideal.' She didn't have long legs, she had a somewhat long torso and fairly full sized hips (which is one of the reasons she could dance with such womanly power and strong jumps). As with most Bolshoi dancers who came up in the 40s-50s, she had muscular legs. Russian ballet bodies started changing with Maximova, Nadezhda Palova, and Galina Mezentseva until you have the super skinny Russian dancers around today. Not an improvement, IMO.

xxxFreyjaxxx, I immensely enjoyed watching this and I am sure I will watch again and again. The dance is exquisite AND they got the characters absolutely as I imagine them. Odette is evil and cunning and smart at it, she is weaving her web and closing in in a precise calculated way, all the while being incredibly beautiful. And Siegfried is completely fooled and dances through his exuberant first love joy. Wonderful... I also really like the steps Maya dances instead of the traditional fouettes: they are even more convincing for what she plots :-) absolutely bewitching :-) The scenery appeals to me too, very unusual: it reminds me of the paved area in front of Notre Dame de Paris, France. I guess it could be other cathedrals in Europe, but I am just more familiar with this one - from the towers design though is not Notre Dame de Paris - Sorry for the long chat, I got carried away... Some elements in Odile's part make me doubtful whether this is Petipa's choreography. The thing is the Bolshoi's Swan Lake at the time was based on the re-interpretation of choreography made by Alexander Gorsky in 1912 or 1913, and Maya, too, found it much more preferable to the Petipa/Ivanov original. She spoke about this preference many a time in various interviews. Incidentally, as of the mid-1970's and until, I think, 1982 the Bolshoi ran two versions of Swan Lake simultaneously -- the one by Grigorovich/Petipa on the main historic stage and Gorsky's versions, on the stage of the Kremlin Palace of Congresses.
In Russia and in times past, Odile was not depicted as a black swan, but as a black bird of some kind. Much like Rothbart was depicted as a bird of prey, like an Owl. It was not until the West started depicting Odile as a black swan that the Russians followed suite, and started depicting Odile as a black swan. A rare occasion of the Russians agreeing that the West had a better idea than theirs. The point being, that the head-dress she is using, is more or less like the crest of a bird.

Heavy? Who the hell could say this woman was heavy? She's healthy and THIN, just not a bone bag, thank God.

Interesting. Thank you for the insight.

Fantastic video. Thanks for sharing. It is history
Watching in 2016 and loving this
In Russia and in times past, Odile was not depicted as a black swan, but as a black bird of some kind.
