That was not that skipper's first rodeo at Sodwana beach launch. He was patient with the sets and generally had his angles of attack okay. But I would say that his craft was hopelessly underpowered for those surf conditions and human payload. He just couldn't take proper advantage of the flat water between the sets. That also caused him to drift to where it was rougher (apparently the sandbank). As a qualified skiboat skipper I would say that he was reckless in tackling that surf with those impediments. He was actually a little lucky to make it. RMY
I would agree completely. Him making it was not experience, it was a roll of the dice that came up lucky. An experienced skipper would never have tackled that surf with that boat, motor and load combination.
4.5m Markham whalers come factory with 2x40 HP, 4.9m Markham whaler 2x70hp, I restoring transom now on my 4.9, may reinforce and hook 2x 90 HP four strokes and do drag racing on water 🦾🦾🦾🦾
Knowing this launch well (6 launches a day with 6 divers on board) for many years I can say the following - This is a 4.5 m boat and the law says 1 person per full meter in RSA. This means in terms of numbers they are max but in terms of weight they are 1 person overloaded. - The surf looks like an above average day. Another reason to look at dropping a passenger to keep things safe. - they ran to far down the waves to the north putting them close to the sandbar called “ the graveyard” for a reason. You avoid this and turn and run with the waves back and keep close to the point as possible. - the heavy weight make picking up and planing of the boat and therefore speed to run down past the waves difficult putting them in a bad spot.. - it certainly took some skill to not flip this boat as chances were 50/50 of this happening.

Bad launch but good recovery, he knows what he is doing. You can´t go full throttle when you hit the wave, and always a bit sideways not straight. In Indonesia leaving Grajagan port they go through waves like that like it is normal, with 10 people in the boat.
Up wave ful power, at peak no power and float down wave, no air at peak of wave it's not a windsurfing stunt show, approach rough swell at 60 degree angle, taught this at sea squadron course in south australia
THAT IS AN EXPERIENCED SKIPPER, COMMENTS BELOW DONT UNDERSTAND WHAT LOOKS LIKE ERRATIC OPERATION IS ACTUALLY EXPERIENCE WITH TIDE, WAVES, WIND, GOOD JOB CAPTAIN
“Crew” Hey captain, what do we do when the big waves are heading strait at us?!? “Captain” Push the throttles as far forward as they will go and head strait at them!!!😳💪🏼 (“feeling a little less manly than I did just a minute ago?!”)🤦🏼😂
Hopefully they took some food along, like a big cooler full of chicken and sandwiches and lots of drinks plus about a garbage bag full of bags of chips and cookies, maybe some muffins or cup cakes. If they run out of food maybe they can stop at a restaurant or grocery store and load up.
Crew? You mean the dark fellas in the water pushing the boat out to sea, or the 3 white whales that flopped over the sides? Ether way, they were all wet.
I don't know Sodwana but as a surfer it looks to me like they ran right across a rip current and into the incoming flow where the waves were largest and most turbulent? The camera does not show it but it looks like, if they had continued out to the camera's right, it would probably have been much easier, at least up to the back.
Hit waves at ,30 degree on a mono hull they referred to. power up the face of the wave , just before hit peak then power off so just float down the wave. No full power at peak of wave which rockets boat vertically in air and bashes boat at end of the wave. I learnt tbis at sea squadron course im south australia. Boat licences are given out waaay too easily im comparison for the high dangers of the sea. Go the cats, have a 4.9 markham whaler, the little boat with big attitude and heeeaaaaps of open floor space 😻😻🥇🥇💪💪
What is the point of wearing a life jacket if it's not done up? If it had been done up properly it would have been far easier to haul him on board. They all would have been rolling around on the beach in the waves if it hadn't been for those two helpers keeping the boat into the waves.
Try as they might to flip that boat they still made it without taking anyone's leg off with a prop or dumping one of those big guys in the water! Unbelievable!
