    Damn. That first poem, though. How often do they do that to him? Shut him down when he's trying to explain the reason something happens or shed a little more light. "Thank you, Data." "That will be all, Data." Is a reflection of his day to day life, and they all just seem glad that he's done. I understand that maybe they felt he was being monotone, but there's a lot to unpack there. I love these poems. I'd listen to them all day.

      Thats not it, its that the crew literally is being affected by something that isnt letting them sleep. These people are multiple days sleep deprived trying to stay awake for a poetry reading

      That's literally what I came here to talk about 😂 he's always alllllways over explaining things and always being told "stoooooopppp, that's enough thankyou data" 😂 so the end of that poem deserves just as much credit for fitting Data as ode to spot ! Lol. Brilliant scripting really. And as always, Brent delivers the lines so superbly well

      I mean, I love his poetry too, but it doesn't really matter how good the poetry is. As someone who's been to a lot of student readings, you get pretty bored after four or five poems, let alone NINE.

      @@RagmaticalRachel I 100% agree with you and I'm so happy I'm not the only one who feels this way. Although the crew is largely annoyed/bored, this is truly the saddest moment in TNG. I believe what he is writing about is a date that he went on, and who was the only person that we know he was involved with? Lieutenant Yar. He is writing poetry about his long dead lover years later, which shows that the memory was important to him, and that he still thinks about her, yet his best friends can hardly stay awake.

  • @threetythreepercent
    @threetythreepercent Рік тому +4

    Strangely, he reads the first part of Ode to Spot as if it’s a question, when it’s actually a statement;
    “Felis Catus is your taxonomic nomenclature.” He’s just saying it’s the scientific name for a cat. But he bleeds it into the next line as if he’s asking whether the scientific name for a cat is “an endothermic quadruped, carnivorous by nature.” The second line is just another description of a cat, so they are two statements, not one long question as Brent Spiner’s misreading would suggest.

      I know this is a 3-y.o. comment, but it sat with me wrong. I can acknowledge nine poems are a lot, but his delivery isn’t robotic at all? He’s speaking in meter instead of flat plodding, and his tone and lilt alters from line to line. It’s only slightly but I still think that’s enough to argue against it being robotic. I think the crew are being insensitive because data uses too much scientific jargon for them to find enjoyable. The fact that so many people in the comments say they love data’s poetry says something quite different from the crew’s reaction.

    I had Chatgpt write a poem for a cat named spot. Here's what it came up with:
    In a cozy nook, a cat named Spot
    With fur of ebony, skeek and hot,
    Eyes like embers, gleaming bright,
    Prowling stealthily through the night.
    Bounding with grace, a feline prince,
    Whiskers twitching, never mince,
    His steps through gardens, roofs, and trees,
    His playful antics, a sight to please.
    Curling up in a sunbeam's glow,
    Purring softly, rhythmic flow,
    Spot, the cat, with charm untold,
    A friend so dear, with tales untold.
