  • Hilarious scene in "Menage a Troi" where Picard challenges Tog for possession of Lwaxana Troi
    Sonnets used
    #147 - My love is as a fever, longing still
    For that which longer nurseth the disease;
    Feeding on that which doth preserve the ill,
    The uncertain sickly appetite to please.
    My reason, the physician to my love,
    Angry that his prescriptions are not kept,
    Hath left me, and I desperate now approve,
    Desire his death, which physic did except.
    Past cure I am, now reason is past care,
    And frantic-mad with evermore unrest;
    My thoughts and my discourse as madmen's are,
    At random from the truth vainly express'd;
    For I have sworn thee fair, and thought thee bright,
    Who art as black as hell, as dark as night.
    #141 - In faith, I do not love thee with mine eyes,
    For they in thee a thousand errors note;
    But 'tis my heart that loves what they despise,
    Who in despite of view is pleased to dote;
    Nor are mine ears with thy tongue's tune delighted,
    Nor tender feeling, to base touches prone,
    Nor taste, nor smell, desire to be invited
    To any sensual feast with thee alone:
    But my five wits nor my five senses can
    Dissuade one foolish heart from serving thee,
    Who leaves unsway'd the likeness of a man,
    Thy proud hearts slave and vassal wretch to be:
    Only my plague thus far I count my gain,
    That she that makes me sin awards me pain.
    #18 - Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
    Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
    Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
    And summer's lease hath all too short a date:
    Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
    And often is his gold complexion dimm'd;
    And every fair from fair sometime declines,
    By chance or nature's changing course untrimm'd;
    But thy eternal summer shall not fade
    Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest;
    Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade,
    When in eternal lines to time thou growest:
    So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
    So long lives this and this gives life to thee.

    I can just imagine the producer taking Sir Patrick aside before shooting this scene and telling him, "You remember what they probably taught you in your acting training, about NOT overacting, and NOT hamming things up? • @2thinkcritically
      @2thinkcritically 6 років тому +45

      It's funny; as a child I disliked her character, but as an adult I saw her in an entirely different light.
      It would seem the 10 year old me based my views around how Picard (a role model and father figure) reacted to her presence. Perhaps I was too young to truly understand her character, or maybe I just didn't have any interest in those boring grown-up relationship stories she was often a part of.
      Re-watching the series now I see her for the much more complex character she really was. All that confidence, all that meddling, all that pomp and ceremony - it was all a mask. The real Lwaxana was much more vulnerable - still silently grieving over the loss of her first child, craving security to the point she was willing to marry _anyone_ who would have her, but also very wise and thoughtful - particularly when it came to understanding children. Seeing her provide a positive, supportive role model to Alexander juxtaposing Worf's more militaristic parenting style in _Cost of Living,_ or how she fought to save the life of Timicin in _Half A Life_ really showed off Barrett's abilities.

      It was solely the writing at fault to be honest, I'm convinced Majel did her best in spite of it. In the end there are just a lot of lines that are outright nasty, underhanded or otherwise rude, especially in the very early episodes like Haven, but on the flipside there have been some real gems like her scene with Odo when they're stuck in the turbolift together.
      That and her guest appearance on Babylon 5 was fantastic, which really shows how well she does when she has a consistently good script to work with.

He can make any Shakespearan act accessible yet convey the emotion in it, but here he shows how he can do so as though he is Picard quoting various lines in an intentionally bad acting style but it works so well for the scene! You can also tell they just gave him free reign and that he is really enjoying himself!

    Lwaxana knows that Picard is not in love with her, but she plays at being smitten with him just to get under his skin. She lives to take people, even those she admires, down a peg or two. It's just her way of dealing with her own insecurities and grief.

    • @Skye305
      @Skye305 5 років тому +3

      It was Judge Aaron Satie who said that in-universe; Picard was quoting him. Also you have likely misunderstood the meaning. That quote is not against anger, fear or racism, but wanton censorship and witch-hunting, employing those concepts reversely against legit criticism. In fact, the term "racism" can very easily be used to silence those who are politically opposed to your ideals - just the thing that Aaron Satie was warning about.
      Anger and fear are natural responses. If we are talking about a certain religion, I think it is natural that people hate and fear something that poses a threat to their very life - It would be rather insane to think that people in the West should embrace a violent and oppressive culture with open arms. Also, religions have proven to be the antitheses of free speech with the killings of the cartoonists for just one example. Judge Aaron Satie would not approve.
