I hate to burst y'all bubblles but there is no such thing as an ugly stage. I literally walked around with little twigs on my head when I started and I rocked them! Locks are beautiful in all stages! The frizz is natural so embrace it, love yourself! God bless all that read this in Jesus name Amen🙏
I’ve been locking for 7 months and I’m in the “ugly stage”, but idk it doesn’t feel too ugly to me. It’s like a metamorphosis of patience and the payoff is dope hair. Keep ya heads up y’all will get through it 🔥
I don't think any of these stages are ugly, our hair is beautiful regardless of what phase it's in. Although, I do understand that some people won't echo that same sentiment, but nevertheless, this journey is amazing and will continue to be. Thank you for your insight of what may be an insecurity for others, greatly appreciated. ❤🙌🏾
My locs is a month and few days old. I had to do braids over them cause of school and my self esteem buh now am rocking my look. Haven't had a retwist yet so its rough and frizzy. This video just gave me added confidence
@@youngproffet8187 I completely understand. All I can say is let's remember our WHY we started-just to reinforce the purpose! I'm 6 months in (freeforming ) and its not for me. Lol! I look insane. So, I decided that I'm heading in for my first professional retwist soon. Along, with TP's advice + the will to carry on... We can get through it. Xoxoxo :) :)
I had 14 inches added to my 8 inches loc hair that was a huge mistake after two years it was extremely heavy hurting my neck then I had had a hysterectomy then I went through menopause which I’m still in so I ended up cutting everything off and starting completely over. I’m not gonna add any more extensions and that’s where I’m at but it is so ugly having short hair for me, I might look cute but I never had short hair think about putting a stocking cap on and putting on set up a curly Afro wig for the next four months I have 3 inch starter locks. I couldn’t even untangle my Locs😮 so that’s why I ended up cutting them completely off, this time I do not want gel in my hair that was most of the problem. I saw People to Locs with oil or Shea butter, but not bee wax. ;-) Watching your videos because I definitely need encouragement. Went to short hair.😩😌
I have straight hair dreads and I’m only 3 months in and reallyyy going thru the “ugly phase”. And even tho my hair isn’t looking how I’d want it to be, I still already freakin love my dreads and Ik that it’ll be all worth it in the end. For those of you worried about the “ugly phase”, don’t be! It’s all about patience and keeping ur mind set on ur goal.
just discovered this channel a little ago but my first time seeing this video, im at work as we speak with my locs (5 months in) looking all types of crazy and tryna do backflips across my head, but after seeing this i can truly say TP you made rethink and reevaluate how i felt about my locs and i’m a carry this same sense of confidence and embrace everyday forward from now on. so thank you very much!!!
The ugly stage was so long and hard for me, but after 8-9 months it got so much better. My Dreads are finally maturing. Guys just be patient and it’ll turn out great in the end and the loc will be worth it. Forgot to add I just had my one year on October 5th 2020.
I just gotta say y’all makin me so happy rn bruh I been sad asl thinking my shit just not meant to lock or some ion even be wanting to go outside 😭 y’all just made me real life appreciate my journey even more 7 months in Ian giving up ❗️ Love Loc family 🖤💯
My hair ain’t at the length to begin my journey. But I was worried bout the “ugly stage” thank you for this. Its helped me to not. Change my mind on starting my journey🙏🏼💯
I think I fell in love with my locs during the “ugly stage” (months 1 - 3.5). If I wasn’t rocking my budding babies I wore wigs, rocked headwraps, and even Marley twists.. basically everything people said I couldn’t do with immature locs (except permanently dying them 🚫). 😂😂 I still accessorize my look with different glasses (prescription cuz sis needs to see clearly lol). I also attach loc jewelry to hair pins so I’m not compromising the integrity of my locs
Hey,did you deal with any build up when you did Marley twists? I'm really struggling with my locs being so short I want to do twists or faux locs over them but I'm worried about the build up I get when I normally do braids/twists.
estadje I experienced buildup especially on my edges mainly due to oils, sweat, and edge control. I honestly shouldn’t have done the Marley twists so soon in my journey. When I took them out 3 (almost 4) weeks later some of my locs tried to join together. Of course I panicked. 😂😂😂😂 If you do Marley twists or faux locs don’t leave them in too long so you don’t compromise the integrity of your growing locs.
Wow blown away by everything you say. I felt you & your younger followers loc journey might be different to mine, coz I’m so much older than you Guys😱57 year old blind woman from the UK. But so relieved to see that whatever age we are & where we live our journies are the same. This has really humbled me. I felt bad for buying new headgear and switching from stud earrings to large hoop earrings. You are so knowledgeable on the “Journey”. Wishing you your family a very Happy & Blessed New Year🙏🏽✨✨thank you for the talk in grinning from ear to ear like a Cheshire Cat😹
The part about wearing a head covering until you gain confidence really brought me to the Bible this morning about husbands being the covering of wives and wives for children. Thanks for that piece of word!
I loved your tip 5. 🙌🏽 I’m in my 3rd year at Uni. I had an Afro from the middle of my 1st year. I found it to be the most time consuming hairdo ever! So I switched to dreads the day before classes began, this year. BEST DECISION OF MY LIFE! It’s so low maintenance it reminds me of the 4 years I used to shave my head. My curriculum is hectic so I really needed this. I’m not loving how it looks right now but the benefits of having locks far outweighs all that I feel about it. Also I’m too busy to dwell on how I look. I wear bucket hats most of the time anyway because I don’t like the sun on my face, so this allows me to hide them on most days. I take lots of pics and videos of this phase. I wanna remember it. ❤️
🤗🤗🤗🤗🥳🥳🥳🥳 I'm freaking out right now. Thank you for making the video and shout out. I'm a year in my loc'd process and Nooooo one around me has locs. I was so use to weave, wigs, that my journey was hard. Need help sometimes during my "ugly phases". Some of my family weren't supportive at first. Now they love my hair. Thanks again and keep it up.
The beauty of working from home during this pandemic. If I’m not wearing a bra or pants most days, I’m really not too bothered about what’s happening with these starter locs. I’m blessed to be able to embrace this wildness. Thanks TP 🙏🏾
Currently on month 4 and hats are a life saver. I used to go to the barber 2 or 3 times a month so getting comfortable with the feeling of looking rough has it's ups and downs.
I'm about to be 6 months in, my third go in a full year, and while I love the process this time around the struggle is real. Been sick the past week and hard on myself today regarding my locs, so I said, "Let me go watch TP." 😂 Your videos are so helpful, and even though I've seen this one before, it got me right together. Thanks for getting me back on track as I slap a beanie on and keep it pushing. The retwist can wait until I feel better. 🖤
First week with my comb coils, I've been watching your channel for like a month now, I always wanted locks but never had the courage. You gave me the courage to do it, thanks for the videos man, I feel ready for my journey
I needed this tbh. Because best believe there are days where the frizz gets to me and I feel to take them out but I'm torn cause I WILL NEVER go back natural 😂😂
Thank you for makin this vid. like u said its good to have a buddy and sucks to be alone i started locs earlier this year so im goin through an ugly stage and my family does not let up...none of them know what there talking about when it comes to hair but they still have to express their opinion to me..it really messes up my confidence sometimes. BUT the dude at this liquor store i go to started locs when i started mine and we bounce ideas off eachother and build eachother up. i dont mean to sound like sensitive but like everyone DEFINITELY needs someone like that in there life at this stage.
Lol I definitely got my nose pierced right after starting my locs. I have a whole new look now and attracting different types of women then I have before. It's really spiced up my loc journey and really has me feeling myself these days. You were 100% right on this one. Even women that don't really like locs that much are telling me they like my look and it makes me feel better about the "rough" stage.
I'm currently 2 months locked in and I'm just trying to love my hair in this stage but it's as much of me learning patience and my locs are teaching me that and I'm learning to take it and embrace it😊 and love it in all the stages to come😊. Thanks for the videos they help me a lot in my journey🎉
I love this video and the one thing I have learned is to be more patient and not just with my locs but I’ve learned to be more patient with more things in my life as well 😊❤
Man I'm trying so hard to be consistent. And you're legitimately doing this with ease. It's content I want to see. And spaced out in a manner that is easy to consume.
Found your videos because I'm looking to help my fiance start his dreads, and natural hair is something i know very little about. Thanks for all the great advice!
I’m really glad that I found your channel. I just started mine this year (2021) and it’s giving me a lot of confidence knowing that I’ll be able to get to a desired result later on. 🖖🏾👽
I started two wks ago too! I'm not feeling like they ugly I actually right now feel free.. Even tho they shrunk a lot and cuz my hair fine a lot have come loose in the back. Looking forward to my re twist this week
I remember I almost quit when I got to this phase. I felt as if it would never end. But hey, I got through it and I've now been loc'd for a whole year and loving my hair.
The good brotha TP coming through with another shining gem! I got barrel twists on my third retwist, reluctantly after my loctician's request, and I love it! Old folks hate it and everybody else can't lay off the compliments! But I won't get another style for a while because I do want my locing process to not slow down because of the restrictiveness of a style. Keep that in mind folks! TP, you reading my mind man. It's cool though! Lol!
Ugly stage My family: cut that shit off, eww, do something with it, it looks so bad My locs fully mature down my back Family: don't cut it, it looks so good, when are you gonna dye it, it grew so much
That's what I watched EVERY single person in my family go through! Lol Brother had NO support. Then when he felt he needed to cut his mid back locs for a job, they all thought he was crazy!! "Don't!" "Forget that job, your hair is so beautiful!" Lol
I find this video very helpful ,because my guy here spoke on things that I could've really used my first time starting locs and is so very helpful now.
great video!! this was good motivation .. i am 2 and a half months in and most of these tips are applicable to me .. ive been doing alot of reading just to take my focus off of my hair .. its really been helpful i dont like the term “ugly phase” either .. just embrace that your hair is changing .. hang in there yall
Im in my "ugly phase" now BUT... My locs are dope.. I love them!! I love the frizz, the length, the size eerrrrrr thang! I do switch it up and use turban head bands and wraps.. Big earrings, big sunglasses. I feel free. Imma have to submit my pics on ur next loc review!
My loc buddy is going to be my niece. I just did her comb starter locs like a week ago and im about to do my 2nd go round of having locs because i actually liked having them.
And I hear what you mean by having a loc buddy, but it’s different when your journey is mostly looked down upon by others. I got my hair instant locked for my second journey (no extensions) and everywhere I go, I hear loc people talking down on instant locs. I don’t even like calling my hair locs because I feel like I don’t belong
That’s gotta be pretty frustrating. I’m sorry you’re going through that! Your experience is definitely more unique but please stay encouraged!!! You are apart of this family too!
TP locks I’ll try! With pressure from my family with how my first natural loc journey looked (rough) and the fact that my parts weren’t right at ALL (a mix of sharpie sized ones and thinner than pencil sized ones) I just wanted my hair to have a good healthy parting system and to look a little more ahead than I was. And even now, though I got instant locs, they honestly look like I’m only on month 8, since I was on month 4 when I combed my first set out.
I've been looking for a loc buddy but can't find one .....and I felt like you were talking directly to me when you mentioned being "obsessive". I literally lose sleep worrying about my locs lol
Theres definitely an ugly stage. It's cool to be "no hair is ugly it's all beautiful "but sometimes u gotta be honest with urself. It's not the best phase for dreads
@@MM-gp9mb it's not "cool" it's called self love and not thinking like a colonizer. Kinky hair grows in the form of the ancient spiral as seen in the earliest drawings of mankind. Just one of other magnificent facts. You new folks 🤦♀️. If you think its ugly, you think you are ugly. Keep that energy to yourself 🤢. Glad I was raised correctly. Poor little coconut 😂. Do us real ones a favor and dont wear them at all. It's called dreads, because wyts thought they were dreadful. Worn by the runaways who raided plantations. (they love em' now, cause they have your knowledge)YOU are not supposed to think that🤦♀️. They are the crown of the fighters. Do away with your comb and reject the British. Yall are plumb silly.
I'm considering beginning my hair journey at the end of this summer. Your videos are very encouraging. I appreciate a brother, who is relatable, breaking it down for newbs like me.
I’m at my 6month journey n all I can say is tht u really helped me thru my journey I been embracing my locs ever since I started I notice it wasn’t really an ugly stage but thank u TP Locs 💕💯👌🏾
When I started my dread journey a year ago I just wanted to try something out but now I really see that now my locs fits my personality especially since I’ve been watching your channel and dynasty tv channel for a few months now cause I’m trynna find out more stuff about dreads and how long to keep em up y’all really inspired me to keep going through this
I’m currently going threw the ugly duckling stage! I have had my locks for almost a month Thank you so much for this video! Your helped me a ton!! I have started meditation 🧘♀️ an I’m embracing my spiritual journey.
I gotta find me a loc buddy. My husband has had locs for a few years and tells me to leave my hair alone lol I’ve been instant locking my hair but with my hair type I’m still going to go thru the ugly phase 🥴🥴🥴 Started my journey on 7/11/20.
Thank you for this one! In my second month and the frizz is on 10!! Just needed a little reassurance that this too will pass😊. Definitely trying to appreciate the process.
Folks! He's not really saying that the phase is "ugly". He is basically putting it out there for those of you who are seeking confidence or a way to embrace why your hair may be growing in directions you're not use to. That's it 🙂
This is definitely me at all times. 😁 I don’t think it’d be sustainable for me if I had to act different for the loc family! 😅 Thank you for the compliment!
I’m at 2 months as of this Friday. 2 retwist in at the time of this comment. Everytime I’m about to cut these thangs I open this channel. Appreciate it G
I have starter locs ( started on 8/13/20) and when I'm not at work I rock the headband fo sho ✊🏾. Keeps the starter locs in place while letting the hair and scalp breathe
Did yall locs in the lower back of ur head take longer to loc up? I'm assuming its because they're like baby hairs almost cause they're at the base of the head
i feel like recently with the influx of loc channel and info the "ugly" stage of locs isnt nearly as looked down upon or seen as like a bad thing, which is great. No reason to deter people from their journey
I just started my locs. It’s one month now and I’m wearing head wraps to get through the “ugly” stage and wearing big wooden African inspired earrings #BLACKEXCELLENCE which I’m absolutely loving and I’m Thinking about starting a UA-cam channel to document my loc journey as well!😉
I’m embracing it! It’s not easy but I’m just gone thug it out like the young folks say. I went through a whole natural hair journey so I’m good 😭🤣😫 I dress up to make it work. 9 months next Sunday! 💪🏿 i love your Channel and the music blessings to you and your family been here since 10k
Hey TP, how did you transition your hair from laying back to fall down, did you retwist your hair in a different direction or let it fall naturally? Thanks for the great content stay blessed!
Its kinda hard to not call it the "ugly stage" when you have a few on the side of your head that wants to defy gravity
Laws of physics say what, lol
😆😆😆😆😆😆
Mine stay stuck to my head and i hate it😭
🤣🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂 man🤦♂️
I wore big earrings, started going to the gym and got my nose pierced 😂. Me and my locs in this together
My nose has been pierced for like 20 years but I’m using silk head scarves and african print fabric to create headwraps and I added big hoops also 😂.
Nose rings would make it look worse

That covering hair tip is the truth. I feel like I got a lil earthy goddess feel going on, you feel me? Lol. Great video! ❤️
Keep the goddess vibe going! Lol Thanks for the comment and the support ✊🏾
Accessorizing is a great idea! I got eye glasses and nose piercing...wore some shells too.
Lol!
I'm mixed and it's hard a.f to find someone to relate to on this journey. Videos like this help me to keep going regardless 🖤
Ugly stage
My family: cut that shit off, eww, do something with it, it looks so bad
My locs fully mature down my back
Family: don't cut it, it looks so good, when are you gonna dye it, it grew so much
This is facts! 😂😂
That's what I watched EVERY single person in my family go through! Lol
Brother had NO support. Then when he felt he needed to cut his mid back locs for a job, they all thought he was crazy!!
"Don't!"
"Forget that job, your hair is so beautiful!"
Lol
Just began my loc journey about 3 weeks ago. Came across your vids and I had to like and subscribe. You're throwing gems bro. Keep it up.
I find this video very helpful ,because my guy here spoke on things that I could've really used my first time starting locs and is so very helpful now.
great video!! this was good motivation .. i am 2 and a half months in and most of these tips are applicable to me .. ive been doing alot of reading just to take my focus off of my hair .. its really been helpful
i dont like the term “ugly phase” either .. just embrace that your hair is changing .. hang in there yall
I’m glad the video helped fam! But yea ain’t no such thing as an ugly phase. It’s just the part of the process! I miss it some days no lie. Lol
F*** them. They are'nt paying for anything. Do what you want. Its your head.
The only difference is you skipped the budding process and got the loc instantly which is the whole point of locs.
I've been looking for a loc buddy but can't find one .....and I felt like you were talking directly to me when you mentioned being "obsessive". I literally lose sleep worrying about my locs lol
There is No"ugly phase" it's in your head.
Exactly! what's wrong with these strange people 🤦♀️😂? My bad I already know.
I’m getting roasted bro I feel like giving up 🤧
Don't give up. Look for inspiration 🙌 Keep looking in the mirror and Loving who you See 💖
Just got my starter locs on Tuesday and I’m fully embracing protective styles lol. Thanks for the video!
When I started my dread journey a year ago I just wanted to try something out but now I really see that now my locs fits my personality especially since I’ve been watching your channel and dynasty tv channel for a few months now cause I’m trynna find out more stuff about dreads and how long to keep em up y’all really inspired me to keep going through this
A couple of my locs have started budding and I’m loving it
I’m currently going threw the ugly duckling stage!
If you can’t find one definitely tracking a journey like yours works too! That’s why I love UA-cam so much! 🔥
I started mines 8/11/20 🥴 in 2 days I’llhave had them for 3 months 🥳
Bruh I started mine 9/15/20
Listen to your husband, leave them alone and let them Flourish!
Thank you for this one! In my second month and the frizz is on 10!! Just needed a little reassurance that this too will pass😊.
Definitely trying to appreciate the process.
Quarantine is the perfect moments 😂
Folks! He's not really saying that the phase is "ugly". He is basically putting it out there for those of you who are seeking confidence or a way to embrace why your hair may be growing in directions you're not use to. That's it 🙂
I’m in this stage now 🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️ I’m wearing wigs right now to hide it 😂
Thank you TP. I’m in this faze and you have taught me how to do this during quarantine. Thx
I’m honored to have your trust fam! ✊🏾
U give such genuine vibes. Hope this is the real you in person too!
Definitely got the best content on locs on here. Congrats to all your successes!
Thank you! 🙏🏽 Just tryna offer the advice I wish I had lol
I have starter locs ( started on 8/13/20) and when I'm not at work I rock the headband fo sho ✊🏾. Keeps the starter locs in place while letting the hair and scalp breathe
I locked up same day, loc buddies ?
The headband is definitely my go to! Lol
Did yall locs in the lower back of ur head take longer to loc up? I'm assuming its because they're like baby hairs almost cause they're at the base of the head
I love when u say yes in the intro🤣🤣
Corona was a god send because it came during my ugly phase lol. Been working from home for 7 months and loc'ed now for 6.
Currently going through this stage right now. Learning to embrace it but it's a difficult journey
Most things worth attain will be difficult at first! You can do this! ✊🏾
Yea my hair has grown enough to the point it's able to be braided. Thanks for your inspiration
i feel like recently with the influx of loc channel and info the "ugly" stage of locs isnt nearly as looked down upon or seen as like a bad thing, which is great. No reason to deter people from their journey
I just started my locs. It’s one month now and I’m wearing head wraps to get through the “ugly” stage and wearing big wooden African inspired earrings #BLACKEXCELLENCE which I’m absolutely loving and I’m Thinking about starting a UA-cam channel to document my loc journey as well!😉
I have a loc buddy but she’s a year in so I use her for inspiration. I can’t find anyone with my texture or micro locs like mine 😩
Dang! You looked on IG locliving and everything! We gotta find you one!!!
TP locks I started on a tapered cut so I think that’s the struggle 😩
I’m embracing it! It’s not easy but I’m just gone thug it out like the young folks say. I went through a whole natural hair journey so I’m good 😭🤣😫 I dress up to make it work. 9 months next Sunday! 💪🏿 i love your Channel and the music blessings to you and your family been here since 10k
Thank you so much for the support and the comment! 🙏🏾 Thug it out! Lol ill do my best to keep the content coming.
TP locks 💪🏿
Finding a lock buddy in ireland is like looking for a pig that can fly😂
A friend of mine said the same thing 🦾
Good knowledge! Loc buddy interesting. Patients is key.
That or at least follow a journey on UA-cam! It helps
TP locks I have. Yours is one and you have given me a lot of guidelines so thanks.
Thank you for this! Subscribed! This is right on time. I’m 4 1/2 months In and frizzy is REAL!
💯
Thank bro I'm just starting again but I feel a little more confident from starting over for the third time. I'm glad I found your channel
Thanks...embrace...and let love live
Hey TP, how did you transition your hair from laying back to fall down, did you retwist your hair in a different direction or let it fall naturally? Thanks for the great content stay blessed!
Over time gravity took care of everything! It naturally fell on its own! 😁
Bro this is the most unique top tips. I have heard. I enjoy the content... AND That analogy was on point. #FACTS
this helped a lot I just started my journey for the first time about two weeks ago thank you again for this video
Skill #5 spoke volumes to me! I've started a blog!
