As he was playing through his songs in that empty space, he realised that a large portion of church experience was about acoustics and people singing in unison. He finished tonight's show by playing and singing Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen with all the lights turned off (even those on the stage so he couldn't see what he was doing). One thing about this song I love: I looked up Genesis 6:5-7 (he mentioned this in the song) and basically it talked about how God was so fed up with how shitty we're being, which went into the next chapter to foreshadow the story of Noah and the Ark. In the song, Tim mentions about how cats started to misbehave, so he drowned them. This song is much deeper than most people think.
Doesn't matter how often I hear this, I'm still left laughing myself sick while in awe of his musical talent, his lyric-writing ability, his humour, his awesome intelligence and in some ways most of all, his memory and speed of recall to sing so fast - yet clearly. (I used to be a guitarist, solo singer and member of numerous choirs, with better than average recall compared to my cohorts, but there was *no way* that I could have remembered all of those intense lyrics, even when I was young and in my own musical prime!) Whenever I see someone like the self-proclaimed "genius" called Ian Juby (young-Earth creationist with, apparently, a high IQ..., or any of his ilk), my natural reaction is to smash my head against the wall to make the stupid go away. To prevent the bloody mess it would cause, I find a Tim Minchin song. I know (far better than those religious fundies, whose 'knowledge' about the existence of their favourite version of god is apparently unwavering) that I'm going to have my faith in humanity restored. Why can I be that much more sure? Simple. He's there, he's funny, his genius is obvious to anyone and I don't have to make up fairytales to 'prove' his existence. Tim wins. Full stop.

+Jolly Joel yes, it's a bit ironic that so many atheists can't resist bashing a religious video, at the same time claiming that they never shove their beliefs down anyone's throats... unlike the religious people. And yes, I do believe in God and I still thoroughly enjoyed this song :)
The best part of this song was me playing it in the car with my mom, who was brought up Catholic, (she's from Barbados, went to a Catholic school, it's just part of the culture they're not particularly fanatical, her family) complain about the cats part because we like animals in this family like any sane family out there but I could only shrug and tell her it was in there. And that's the tip of the iceberg of shit that's in there. I often wonder if people have actually read the damn thing.
I'll give you a tip: Most Christians don't read the Bible themselves, ESPECIALLY not the whole thing. And if they do, most of the time when you try to call them out on something bad in it they say "that's the OLD Testament it doesn't count!" or recite some other kind of excuse just made up by apologists who want the religion to not look so bad and/or crazy..

It's been a while i last checked the comments, due to distractions. I want to thank you for your replies, they remind me the importance of philosophy, after having discarded it for years as the philosophers i had the privilege of meeting were almost captured by their high level of abstraction. Times have changed: philosophy and science are intermingled nowadays and i see increasingly more philosophers actually using their capacity to help solving problems of our era.
TrveMaggot Not really. I mean, I am a Christian too, but I also think, Tim is right in many things. If you're eating McDonalds, there are only two options: either you eat it, or you don't. But if you are a Christian, there are a lot of opinions and you can pick one. You can believe in the Bible and take it literally, you can interprete it, or you can even believe in God but critizise the Bible. It's up to you what you make of it. And of course Tim chose the most negative examples - there are also parts of the Bible that are very interesting to read and that teach you a lot about how a scociety works (and how not).
The Bible couldn't tell you less about how society works! Maybe ancient Jewish society but even then it's full of making the Hebrews look better than they really were.
Daenerys Stormborn yeah but isnt the book that claims to be the sorce of all morality supposed to not have any 'negative examples'? It's like an outspoken, proud rapist writing a great essay on how racism is bad. Just cause they say something good doesnt mean they are entirely good.
Well a major problem is that it isnt the same book as it priginally was, it has been translated, had parts striken from the record, mistranslated on purpose for political design, etc etc. So frankly anyone who wants to take it literally had better learn their hostory...
When I first clicked on this song, I was afraid it would be mindless and cliched. Thank God (YAY IRONY), it's just as funny and clever as ever. Thanks for the upload. :3
+Analytical Atheist They do. They've read many books that you and I have read. The only book that we've read that they haven't is most likely the bible.
I look at the Old Testament and I already see an imperfect "God". You can't just simply write up an updated text and expect that to wipe out the atrocities from the first. At the end of the day, it was still written by men from a time of little understanding to explain the suffering that many experienced. I don't judge anyone for believing in a "God". I myself, just happen to not believe in any current religions idea of a "God". I will, however, judge someone for blindly following a "God". Those that don't question, don't think and only trust. They are just cash cattles for the Shepherd (Priests/Pastors/Reverends/Nuns/Rabbis, etc). If you've read the Bible (or any other holy texts for that matter, whether it be the Qu'ran, the Bukhari, etc) and you still agree, you are a menace to society. All of the holy texts hold extremely violent ideals. While I do understand that you, personally, may not commit such atrocities, there will always be fanatics and zealots that will. Look at the many (and I mean MANY) terrorist acts committed by Christians alone. The Crusades, the attacks on Planned Parenthood, the many murders in the name of "God". If you don't follow the "Bible" word for word, you're simply just a recreational Christian. You want to follow some parts, but not others. The entire holy text was written so you can follow it. Not pick and choose. Have a good day u fkn assdonglover u gon di n sht. Also, I'm not sure if you were serious about the "fagot lover" comment. I'm not for them but I'm not against them either. Just more women to choose from for the heteros.
Davd Martin And you obviously have no knowledge of reality. There is no "God", at least none in the "traditional" sense. If you still believe in a religion, you have unsubscribed to reality.
He's not world class tbh. Though he's certainly amazing at it, he's a while away from world class, not taking anything away from him or so, I definitely can't play like that
Jake Fox No, he's said before in interviews, his degree is in Theatre. I'm fairly certain he can read music, though. He took piano lessons for a little while, before deciding he liked it better on his own. He clearly has a good understanding of music theory, based on his chord progressions, and I'm fairly certain he wrote the orchestrations for his orchestral shows (does anybody know for sure? Please correct me, if I'm wrong, coz those were damn good orchestrations).
@@thembill8246 he has a good understanding of music theory. I mean how does he has all the jazz licks he shows off? He must knows at least how to name about any chord and all his scales and different modes.
So, I'm a huge fan of Minchin. I met him in America at his show in Chicago and it was completely amazing. On top of that, he was a really, really nice/cool guy. I've been showing people his videos and the such. I know he's super popular in Europe and has made a bunch of appearances on shows, as well as selling out huge venues. So, I have one question: Why does he have so few UA-cam viewings? He's amazing...
I think he was in London for a long while in his early career. That's probably where he was, but I'm unsure. If you buy his first dvd, it has a special feature about how he replaced someone who cancelled and ended up being scouted (I think that's what happened, anyways).
I just spent the whole video wishing I had his piano-playing skills. This guy is brilliant! I tried to play the guitar & failed. I gave the piano a go & I failed. I guess I'm just going to have to appreciate music as others play it and few people do it as brilliantly as Tim Minchin.

BLASPHEMERS, one day you will all have to stand in front of our god and face judgement. Woe to you who persecuted us, for when his day of judgement comes you will repent and he will not hear your cries for mercy. we shall sit at his right hand and spend eternity in his kingdom. ALL HAIL CTHULHU FHTAGN!!!
Critical Bloke No my friend, Cthulhu has spoken to me, all you must do is repent and he shall forgive all your past transgressions against him. When his purging of this world is complete all the non believers shall suffer eternal pain and misery for the crime of denying his generous gift of salvation from the swirling torrent of pain and misery he himself shall inflict... he's a lot like the christian god really, only much more honest about his thirst for blood and violence.
At least, if your God is real and I go to hell, I won't be in the company of religious freaks like you. I'll be with nice people who just so happens to not believe in your God or believed in another God. Also, isn't God supposed to be omnipotent so I wouldn't he hear our cries for mercy and if not then he doesn't know or hear everything.
our conversation continued in private after that, seemed the right thing to do. i don't think she is hateful, i'd say she is just on her own learning curve, and she has a right to her own point of view, whether it be right or wrong. i wish her all the best.

I looked up Genesis 6:5-7 (he mentioned this in the song) and basically it talked about how God was so fed up with how shitty we're being, which went into the next chapter to foreshadow the story of Noah and the Ark. In the song, Tim mentions about how cats started to misbehave, so he drowned them.
This song is much deeper than most people think.
Actually god drawned little cats also! Because people were bad... Logic. I don't need more reasons to not respect him ;)
Tim Minchin. What a performer.
It’s a good song. Cause it’s a song. And it is good.
i know the good book is good because the good book says its good
damn this is fuckin hilarious
Riddler Cox I know the good book knows it's good because (of circular reasoning)a really good book would
Nedy Ovalles hahaha the good book would know its good
Riddler Cox indeed
Doesn't matter how often I hear this, I'm still left laughing myself sick while in awe of his musical talent, his lyric-writing ability, his humour, his awesome intelligence and in some ways most of all, his memory and speed of recall to sing so fast - yet clearly.
(I used to be a guitarist, solo singer and member of numerous choirs, with better than average recall compared to my cohorts, but there was *no way* that I could have remembered all of those intense lyrics, even when I was young and in my own musical prime!)
Whenever I see someone like the self-proclaimed "genius" called Ian Juby (young-Earth creationist with, apparently, a high IQ..., or any of his ilk), my natural reaction is to smash my head against the wall to make the stupid go away.
Tim wins. Full stop.
Life is like an ocean voyage
And our bodies are the ships
And without a moral compass
We would all be cast adrift
So to keep us on our bearings
The Lord gave us a gift
And like most gifts you get
It was a book
I only read one book
But it's a good book, don't you know
I act the way I act because
The Good Book tells me so
If I want to know how to be good
It's to the Good Book that I go
Cause the Good Book is a book
And it is good and it's a book
I know the Good Book's good because
The Good Book says it's good
I know the Good Book knows it's good
Because a really good book would
You wouldn't cook without a cookbook
And I think it's understood
You can't be good without a Good Book
Cause it's good and it's a book
And it is good for cookin'
I tried to read some other books
But I soon gave up on that
The paragraphs ain't numbered
And they complicate the facts
I can't read Harry Potter
Cause they're worshiping false gods and that
And Dumbledore's a poofter
And that's bad cause it's not good!
Morality is written there
In simple white and black
I feel sorry for you heathens
Got to think about all that
Good is good and evil's bad
And goats are good
And pigs are crap
You'll find which one is which
In the Good Book
Cause it's good and it's a book
And it's a book (yeah!)
I had a cat, she gave birth to a litter
The kittens were adorable
And they made my family laugh
But as they grew they started misbehaving
So I drowned the little fuckers in the bath!
When the creatures in your care start being menaces
The answers can be found right there in Genesis
Chapter six, verse five through seven! Yee-haw!
Swing your partner by the hand
Have a baby if you can
But if the voices in your head
Say to sacrifice your kid
To satiate your loving God's
Fetish for dead baby blood
It's simple faith the book demands
So raise that knife up in your hands
Before the Good Book made us good
There was no good way to know
If a thing was good or not-not good
Or kind of touch-and-go-so
God decided he'd give writing
Allegoric prose a go
And so he wrote a book
And it was generally well-received
The Telegraph said 'This god is reminiscent of the Norse'
The Times said 'Kind of turgid, but I liked the bit with horses'
The Mail said 'Lots of massacres; a violent tour-de-force
If you only read one book this year
Then this one is a book
And it is good
And it's a book' Yee-haw!
Swing your daughter by the hand
But if she gets raped by a man
And refuses then to marry him
Stone her to death!
If you just close your eyes and block your ears
To the accumulated knowledge of the last two thousand years
Then morally - guess what? - you're off the hook
And thank Christ you only have to read one book
Just because the book's contents
Were written generations hence
By hairy desert-dwelling gents
Squatting in their dusty tents
Just because what Heaven said
Was said before they'd leavened bread
Just cause Jesus couldn't read
Doesn't mean that we should need
When manipulating human genes
To alleviate pain or fight disease
When deciding whether it's wrong or right
To help the dying let go of life
Or stop a pregnancy when it's
Just a tiny blastocyst
There's no reason why we should take a look
At any other book
But the Good Book
Cause it's good and it's a book
And it's a book and it's quite good!
Good is good and evil's bad
And kids get killed when God gets mad
You better take a good look
At the Good Book
im not sure if you copied and pasted that but if you didnt well done
"Swing your daughter by the hand but if she gets raped by a man and then refuses to marry him stone her to death" yeah that sounds about right
Not all heroes wear capes
Thank you!!!
America gives +1 to Minchin. I met the guy and I swear to the good book, he's as genuine in person as he is in this song.
"Stone Her To Death!" That cracks me up every time!
And his face at that moment 🤣
Must be Leviticus, the old sour bag of vinegar.
@@86budda I love that too! 3:25 Brilliant
How the hell does he remember all those chords and lyrics? It's amazing!
Practise, practise, practise.
A gift from God of course!.....
"This next song requires a boot."
there are surprisingly few dislikes on a religiously charged video. woohoo!
Right?
Maybe they don't see the irony. :D
IronicPrayer Probably because Atheist rule UA-cam. Look at Religious videos. Comments disabled, sometimes the rating is disabled. If it's not it's like 90% Thumbs down. There are very few religious youtube videos that have decent rating.
It's hard to battle facts once there's nowhere for you to look away as they approach. ;-)
Are you trying to diss my mother or something? Who came to this country with no family at the age of 27 after knowing my father for only 2 weeks? Because she's a constant inspiration to me, steel fucking ovaries. They've been married for 34 years this August. Street rules, leave the mothers and fathers out of this.
thegriffin88
The fuck? No! I was responding to how you asked if people "even read the damn thing".
Master Markus My bad, it's UA-cam so I have a tendency to be on guard.
thegriffin88
Not a problem, as long as you notice my intention now.
Today the advert for this video is the trailer for Son of God. Did anyone else witness this splendor, or was I the only fortunate one?
I guess that's the definition of ironyyyyy.
His piano playing s fantastic. The Lullaby song is even more impressive. So classical and he plays to perfection.
I had to come watch this after watching the Nye vs Ham debate lol There's a book ya'll!
same here, lol. What a patient guy, Bill Nye.
How many people did the same thing! After that "thing! I thought "Man, I need about ten Tim Minchin songs to feel better again D:!"
I marathon Tim Minchin after my RE homework
Good job, That's the way you do it
Now, let's be civil here-
Oh, wait. This is UA-cam.
I'm so glad I found out about this guy, he's fantastic! This song is hilarious!
If this isn't Rock n Roll, I don't know what is ~
BRILLIANT!
I must have watched this ten times now & it makes me laugh every time.
I love that I watched this so many times I know the lyrics probably everyone knows them but this feels funny
Ah, Tim is really entertaining, mind boggling and inspiring at the same time. I don't agree with everything he says, but that's no problem. We need people like him to broaden our horizon regardless whether he is right or wrong.
I'm glad to have seen this side of you, it strengthens my faith in humanity.
beyond the brilliant lyrics, i find that this piece has some amazing piano parts as well!
one of the best pieces of social commentary in existence
It's fucking hilarious that the ad it showed me for this UA-cam video just happened to be an audiobook for the good book 😂
He truly is. Dont play the piano but i like what i hear and know how difficult it is to do that well. Hes a genius in my eyes. Talented beyond reason with an important message to deliver. If i had a more suggestable outlook on life i would say he was godsent. Lol. But obviously not. Helps me believe im not alone in my thoughts and beliefs. Cant get enough of him. Minchen and Hitchens changed my life and ill be grateful for the rest of my days. Comforting to know there are more like me. Thanks
I've been asked to make an acoustic setlist for a local concert.... Oh how I want to do this....
Tim says it so well. "It's a book."
So true.....Tim Minchin is great. Seeing him in Chicago Saturday. Can't wait!! :D Traveling 600 miles...;)
I AM a Christian and I think this is brilliant work! He's a genius! His Keys, words and the satire.
That's like eating McDonalds but you know what stuff is actually in it...
Satire at it absolute best. Tim minchin is a legend for sure.
'The Good book is a book, and it's Good and it's a Book'
When I first clicked on this song, I was afraid it would be mindless and cliched. Thank God (YAY IRONY), it's just as funny and clever as ever. Thanks for the upload. :3
I wonder if many christians realize that some pretty remarkable stuff have been written over the past 2,000 years?
You pretty much disregarded everything I said, and obviously have little knowledge on many religions.
Davd Martin
And you obviously have no knowledge of reality. There is no "God", at least none in the "traditional" sense. If you still believe in a religion, you have unsubscribed to reality.
They do. They love C.S. Lewis and quote him all the time. His books have lots of underlying Christians themes too.
This is the best take on the power of religion I've heard - superb!!
Literally all of Ken Ham's answers to questions in the Nye-Ham debate could be shown up as bollocks by this song!
that was no debate. that was an intellectual slaughter with the good old butcher knife called reason
Nye 2020
You know its a good song when a single boot is required.
I ❤ this man!! Super clever!!
Tim always reaffirms my faith...in not having faith..because it doesn't require any faith...
am i the only one here that actually thinks he is a world class pianist?
Definitely not the only one, He's a Virtuoso!
Of course not. People saw fit to give him an orchestra. He is top notch for sure.
+superlaggable King he is
He's self-deprecating about his piano talent, but I think that he's remarkable.
He's not world class tbh. Though he's certainly amazing at it, he's a while away from world class, not taking anything away from him or so, I definitely can't play like that
I just can't stop watching Tim. He's just so brilliant and FUNNNY.!!!
I'm so amazed that he can play that complex melody and not look at the keys the whole time
This song requires a boot... Genius!!!!
Wow can he ever play the piano!
can't read music either hahah
13dirty666 Of course he can read music, he has a degree in music.
+Timbill Corder He didn't do the orchestrations.
m.imdb.com/title/tt3709746/fullcredits/music_department?ref_=m_ttfc_9
@@thembill8246 he has a good understanding of music theory. I mean how does he has all the jazz licks he shows off? He must knows at least how to name about any chord and all his scales and different modes.
So, I'm a huge fan of Minchin. I met him in America at his show in Chicago and it was completely amazing. On top of that, he was a really, really nice/cool guy. I've been showing people his videos and the such. I know he's super popular in Europe and has made a bunch of appearances on shows, as well as selling out huge venues. So, I have one question: Why does he have so few UA-cam viewings? He's amazing...
XD IM OFFENSIVE AND I FIND THIS CHRISTIAN
TrainMayhem darude - sandstorm (sorry for my bad english)
but but his name's not Christian it's Tim
and he likes to swear at beaded curtains with Jesus on it
I see what you did there.
TrainMayhem you’re missing the irony
I just saw him a few nights ago. He's still great for all he's been out of comedy for a little while.
Is Tim doing an impression of rural Americans?
Does anyone know where this concert was?
Queen Elizabeth Hall in London
I think he was in London for a long while in his early career. That's probably where he was, but I'm unsure. If you buy his first dvd, it has a special feature about how he replaced someone who cancelled and ended up being scouted (I think that's what happened, anyways).
I don't know where the concert was but he clearly switched to American English. too bad he switched back :- )
Thank you for spraying it out fellow
Hi ! Does anyone know what the tune he is playing at 04:04 is?
very very later on but it reminds me of floral fury from cuphead, dont know what it could be from originaly
Sounds like the piano intro of Conga from miami sound machine
I just spent the whole video wishing I had his piano-playing skills. This guy is brilliant! I tried to play the guitar & failed. I gave the piano a go & I failed. I guess I'm just going to have to appreciate music as others play it and few people do it as brilliantly as Tim Minchin.
Seriously this dude is so fuckin awesome
I think his facial expressions make these (already fantastic) songs even better XD
But not any of those other good books. Those ones are evil.
The section with the reviews is ingenious!
From 4:00-4:11 does anyone know what genre of music this is?
+Mike Barnes I have the same doubt, maybe "Cumbia"?
+El Hector That or possibly "Samba" I was thinking.
+Mike Barnes Salsa
bossa nova
Piano !
Bible verses for stress relief was the ad I got for this...🤣🤣
Came here from a Reddit thread...
"But if the voices in your head
Say to sacrifice your kid
To satiate your lovin' God's
Fetish for dead baby blood"
Amazing.
@garethchelsea *cringe* Sorry about that. I think I was half-asleep when I copied and pasted them, then never got around to checking them over. It's fixed now though, thanks for pointing it out! :)
Wow, one is born maybe once in 100yrs, Tim is a genius.
3:25
I feel like the seriously awesome piano in this song is overlooked thanks to the brilliant writing.
I just shared this video with a bunch of Christian fundamentalists in the comments section of a paranormal type video who insisted the ghosts in a supposed haunted house were actually demons from hell. It was funny.
Chris Nilsson what vid I need to see that
People genuinely believe that shit? It's to fathom that people can be that damn gullible and stupid.
I listen to this song several times a week.
today marks the first time I heard this song.
Date: 20161211

Lugo428 Bienvenidos al genio quien es Tim Minchin, mi amigo catracho.
Love Tim so much! Could watch his videos for hours! :)
I have!!😄
BLASPHEMERS, one day you will all have to stand in front of our god and face judgement. Woe to you who persecuted us, for when his day of judgement comes you will repent and he will not hear your cries for mercy. we shall sit at his right hand and spend eternity in his kingdom. ALL HAIL CTHULHU FHTAGN!!!
Your evidence for this is where exactly...the good book?
Critical Bloke No my friend, Cthulhu has spoken to me, all you must do is repent and he shall forgive all your past transgressions against him. When his purging of this world is complete all the non believers shall suffer eternal pain and misery for the crime of denying his generous gift of salvation from the swirling torrent of pain and misery he himself shall inflict... he's a lot like the christian god really, only much more honest about his thirst for blood and violence.
777sanity Well, at least he's honest. Sure, i'll go with it! Does his right hand have Wi-fi?
Critical Bloke The Necronomicon is the real good book.
After many watches I just realized why this song “requires a boot”. It’s the very last notes. LOL.
love that last bit, well said.
I think 300,000 of these views are me watching this genius and this song. Vote Minchen
In case there's any doubt: the book is called "The Goat Herder's Guide to the Galaxy".
Awesome! Best song !
our conversation continued in private after that, seemed the right thing to do. i don't think she is hateful, i'd say she is just on her own learning curve, and she has a right to her own point of view, whether it be right or wrong. i wish her all the best.
I'd be the same myself. We both have our different views but honestly you sound like a nice bloke. Your comments are level headed and a joy compared to some of my comments or replies to them. I like this song. Listen to it on a regular basis. Fires something in my mind.Gives me strength. No god involved.Just me and myself.
I'm so relieved it did. was so great I shared it. he could use some hair stylin tips tho...
Gotta love that you need to write "Live" in the title. Becuse there are so many studio versions with Tim on youtube. :)
that
was
AWSOME !
REALLY yt? U see me search this and u send along a bible study advert with it!?!? Lmao
This is brilliant. :)
Gotta love this!
Omg, I love this guy! xD
Man! he sure wasn't kiddin'.. you really do need a boot for this song :)
