This guy spent countless hours writing, composing, practicing and performing a song with a full orchestra to tell Sam he's a colossal fuckwit. This, ladies and gentlemen is the definition of amazing.
And sexy as hell. I'm 100% straight sexually but honestly; using an entire orchestra to deliver a burn of this savagery-level is just sexy as fuck. If a girl would have a shot at seducing me it would be a performance with this god-like level of legendary cynicism.
Hes not wrong. I remember reading some words written by a surgeon. He said, and I'm paraphrasing, that after spending 4 years pre graduate, 3 years post graduate and 4 years specialising: every successful, life saving/changing operations, the family would thank the Lord, but God forbid (pun intended) anything went wrong, then God played no part in that. That was all on the highly trained surgeon
Lol if I was surgeon I'd tell the family they're mistaken... "God gave them the condition to test them and you brought them here to me to subvert God's plans and remove this condition set by God... Family... What we did here is the Devil's work and you should be thanking him instead". Of course religious people are delusional and hypocritical, so they'll just deny that and choose whatever the scenario best suits them.
Yes sir/ maam. Religion does do that. But have you read the example of Job which is presented in the Bible as how to react to loss? How about the fact that Jesus willingly allowed himself to be executed in the worst possible way? Study it if you have the bravery and honesty to really see and understand what was done.... I dare you to watch the Passion of the Christ and see a small portion of what God did to settle the debt of OUR sin. P.S. it is supported historically by " non believers"
The sheer devastating amount of scathing sarcasm that this song delivers while still being logically sound and argumentatively concise is absolutely stunning. On top of that the humor and wordplay is simply perfect. An ingenious piece to say the least!

@@NYsummertimeCHI Kinda impressive that @Dan ofDunolly reinforced your point before you made it. Though your definition is kind of centered on celebrity stalking, rather than the kind that's most common - being stalked by someone you know, who you probably have had to reject several times. But I would agree that's closer to the type Tim is invoking in that lyric. But talk about an excellent example of how language around matters of consent is very important, and when we as a society use language that supports the predator more than the victim, it's only making things worse. Because, while I'm sure Dan was being sarcastic in saying stalking is proof of unrequited love, that's genuinely what some people would argue is linguistically correct. But they'd be wrong. Evidence of unrequited love is when the claim of love is made and the other person rejects it or otherwise makes clear that it's not returned - or in the case of celeb or distance stalking, the evidence is that the stalker thinks they genuinely love a person they do not know. People all across the globe love someone who doesn't want them, and they just move on or pine in private, without doing anything that could make the person they claim to love feel uncomfortable, creeped-out or genuinely afraid for their safety. They do not stalk or otherwise harass, and their love isn't lacking in evidence for it. Stalking is proof that it's not love at all, but obsession and compulsion that's born of a need to control or possess what you cannot have, much how domestic violence is about the need to control what you are afraid of losing. Just like rape isn't about sex, stalking is not remotely about love or affection. Because if you actually love someone, you want them to be happy, even if what would make them happy is never seeing your face again.
I have only watched a few videos of Tim's and he's freaking amazing, but to see him perform his unique songs with an entire orchestra is truly impressive!

He just died but I think Stephen Sondheim and he would have an amazing amount in common based on the musical style of both, as well as Mozart which they both credit but then I can also pull Green Day into this argument if you like so I'll stop here. It's not to roast Sam though. He's just an example, a prompt for the topic. He just wanted to expose the flaws in the logic of those who think that God exists just because of random fortunate situations while the world is so fucked up. The world is full of Sams. I had a friend in school, she and all her family were also Evangelics. One day she told me she knew God existed because her sister was born with a condition and the doctors told them she would not live to be 5 years old, but she was a grown woman with kids. I told her the doctors could be wrong but she insisted she got several tests and then got suddenly cured. I then told her, since it was recent events at the time, why would God cure just one little girl but let hundreds die in an earthquake in Haiti. Her response was that "many people in that area believed in black magic and other practices so maybe God wasn't up to that". I dropped the topic after letting her know that in that case her God was a hard pass to me then. She also told me one guy in her community was cured of homosexuality after they all prayed for him as if anyone wouldn't fake to be straight so that they could be left alone in that situation. What a joyous faith.

Thank God they gave this guy an orchestra, as it so viciously aids in attacking the exorbitant claim that God cares about some random lady's cataracts. The real beauty of it is that statistically speaking there's no way that a good portion of that orchestra aren't practicing Christians.
tomlxyz If you're a player in an orchestra and your orchestra is commissioned to play somewhere, I don't imagine you have much say in regards to where and what you're playing. A lot of choral music is religious for example, but if you're a member of a choral group, you may sing religious songs sometimes and songs that aren't religious other times, and thus your personal beliefs often don't have much to do with it.
Brakathor Good thing too, would be a pain in the ass I think if atheists didn't want to do religious songs and such. Or Muslims won't do Christian things, Christian won't do Jewish things, etc.
Brakathor In general, that is right, but (very) religous Christians could chose not to play in such a orchestra, lowering the overall proportion. Some atheists player may prefer such a orchestra, thus increasing the proportion of non-Christians. In the end the statistics would turn out (perhaps only slightly) different.

The stretching of pronunciation to make "cornea(r)" rhyme with "clear". The way Tim grooves his shoulders back and forth. The quick head nods of "no" to the numerous "it couldn't be" lines of parsimonious alternate explanations contrasted with the affirmative nod during "no the only explanation....". The masterful piano playing. The way he nailed the extremely long and fast moving difficult lyrics. Literally EVERYTHING about this performance can only be described as a miracle. Minchin is truly divine.
You are as clueless as Tim. The 1LofT states that energy can't be created or destroyed, it can't happen naturally. One aspect of the 2LofT shows that the universe is winding down, usable energy is becoming less usable. It is clear creation had to be done supernaturally yet it is still denied because people are just too proud to accept that, among other things.

That was all on the highly trained surgeon

Of course religious people are delusional and hypocritical, so they'll just deny that and choose whatever the scenario best suits them.
Yes sir/ maam. Religion does do that. But have you read the example of Job which is presented in the Bible as how to react to loss? "Love without evidence is.. well.. stalking"
-Tim Minchin
Actually this one I first heard from either Dawkins or Krauss
He's saying if you believe and act as if someone else loves you when you have no evidence that they do, then it's stalking.

That's why he draws into tracks not just people who like funny stuff but some real serious musical nerd geeks who may not even know it - once you find yourself marveling over the internal rhyme and structure while he's singing about cheese then you know you've reached a subgroup that you belong in if you're thrilled to be there. He just died but I think Stephen Sondheim and he would have an amazing amount in common based on the musical style of both, as well as Mozart which they both credit but then I can also pull Green Day into this argument if you like so I'll stop here.
When will people get over the stupid concept that is something is funny it is not to be taken seriously or called art? If you have to call it any label at all it's philosophy these days, we've come a long way since take my wife please.
I think people respond hugely to intelligence which people like Bo Burnham over in the United States and wordy people who are very good with the internal rhyming and structure of it all as well as the musical genius - but we don't bother to study music because it's more important to study things like bombs and physics and romance languages I guess I don't know I think all the money should be for music but when it's my turn to be in charge, I'd probably just be happy with a nice karaoke group to sing with - I have to add that it's a special talent that also overlaps with green days ability for Billy Joe all 5'5 of him to run around and own a stadium the way Tim played to a crowd of enormous proportions unheard of for comedy shows except Monty Python until fairly recently. Real science says nothing does nothing. Real science says if there was something there already it must fit with the evidence of what we know. We know the 1LT says there's a conservation of energy. It can change forms and neither can be created or destroyed. Creation cannot happen by natural means. The 2LT has various aspects, one being the universe is winding down, entropy. Usable energy is becoming less usable, so at one point usable energy was at its max. This all points to a supernatural creation, by a supernatural creator at a certain point in which matter, space and time were created. When I read how it can happen otherwise, ALL the fools resort to science-fiction. Once a supernatural creation is accepted, then the next step is finding proof of what supernatural power did it.

“Science adjusts its views based on what's observed
Faith is the denial of observation so that belief can be preserved."― Tim Minchin
Tim does not know what biblical faith is because he just does not care to know but he'd rather fart out lies.
Biblically, faith means trust. It's a trust by evidence seen. God asks that we prove things. To reason. To get knowledge. To study. God has nothing to hide. We develop trust from what is seen, and that which is not seen yet is trusted also because of the trust built up from what is seen. It's much like a human relationship. We don't trust much until a person has gained that trust from what is observed. The difference is though, God is not limited to human powers. He created us.
Romans 1:20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.
His opening of "Science adjusts its views based on what's observed"
Tim is a liar. He believes his god of nothing did miracles naturally with nothing as proof it could. He cares NOTHING about what is observed. What a hypocrite!
His god claims to have given us the creation of the universe, fine-tuning of the universe for life on earth, life from non-life, information for life before and after it began, the laws of nature without a Lawgiver, etc, etc, when we know that your god of nothing can do nothing. His god of nothing has nothing to offer and its followers only offer nothing of evidence for their god of nothing. That makes him nothing of importance but the followers of the god of nothing are so delusional that they think they do have something to offer to defend their god of nothing.

He isn't roasting "someone", he's roasting god, so writing an entire song, composing that song, getting an entire orchestra and being in a show in a concert hall isn't so much over the top.

I agree that the exorbitance of the song is quite amusing (and I agree with what he's saying).
I don't think that orchestras playing for an atheist have the same amount of Christians as the general population.
tomlxyz If you're a player in an orchestra and your orchestra is commissioned to play somewhere, I don't imagine you have much say in regards to where and what you're playing.

His opening of "Science adjusts its views based on what's observed"
Tim is a liar. He believes his god of nothing did miracles naturally with nothing as proof it could. He cares NOTHING about what is observed. What a hypocrite!
His god claims to have given us the creation of the universe naturally but that can't be.
@@2fast2block Well, I hate to break it to ya, but Hebrews 11:1 gives a direct definition of faith, and it is "evidence in things unseen."
I also love when apologists bring up the first two laws of thermodynamics, because they leave out a crucial part on the second law, and make a baseless assumption on the first.
The part that you omit from the second law is the fact that entropy only increases in a closed system, but neither the earth nor the universe is a closed system, so this doesn't apply.
In the first law, you're assuming that the universe came from nothing, and since we don't know what came before the universe, saying it came from nothing can't be proven.
I also fail to understand what this "max energy" is and how it implies a supernatural entity. The amount of energy has been the same since the beginning of the universe, or did you only like to refer to the first law of thermodynamics when it seemed to help your case?
Finally, what is it with apologists and equating atheism to a religion? We have no gods and no system of worship, it's that simple

@@innoden It's not unreasonable. Religion has been responsible for more war, death , intolerance and hate then anything else, like ever. To deny that is irrational.
@@innoden Not really, more about the ways religious-minded folk rationalize their beliefs. As the entire song points out, coincidence on this small of a scale is utterly useless as proof, either to yourself or to other poeple, that omnipotent gods exist.
My anger comes from only recently dismantling my faith and realizing how held back I was as a child. For a god that doesn't exist (and would be outright evil if he did. See the entire Old Testament) and a religious viewpoint that forces ideas into your head instead of logically reaching them.
Tim's sarcastic dismantling of the pathetic nature of a god who "works in mysterious ways" so efficiently gets to the root of that issue. Appeals to a god have such a childish, unimaginative, non-insightful view of the world that plagued my early years that I do get a bit mad at wondering where I'd be without it.
@@orange_man_from "see entire old testament" is a terrible argument. Just because you don't agree that those things should've happened, doesn't make them evil. You are human. Finite. YouJustCantBeatMeGuy It was 12:00 AM, so I am excused from thinking.
Eh, fair enough.
it's more than that. it's giving the middle finger and being backed up by an orchestra when you do it..... Imagine if that just happened all the time. every time you to and tell someone to go fuck themselves, there's an epic crescendo in the background.
Katherine Daniel I guess one needs an orchestra when one tells god to go fuck himself. It seems apt.
I don't know if perfection actually exists, but if it does the this is it. The catchyness of the tune, the biting lyrics of skepticism, the dynamics of loud and soft (ex: when the music stops for "I C G O D" ). The carnival whistle during "fuck me Sam what are the odds".

Oh, this wasn't an attack on me, " rly man? Going around the comment section insulting people for liking Tim, then just reposting the same comment as an answear to whatever they say? Why?"
I gave evidence why Tim deserves those titles and you lie with, "Going around the comment section insulting people for liking Tim". It had nothing to do with people liking Tim, it had all to do with what Tim said. You are so stupid you can't even lie well.
Happy word farting since it is all you are capable of.
I use a line of this frequently when family meetings get on the topic of religion. Paraphrased: Do you really think out of all the thousands of gods that have been, and will be, invented, the one you were taught to believe in since you were a child is the REAL one?
"Love without evidence... is stalking."
I never thought of that before...
Perhaps God can heal the 3rd degree burn Tim Minchin just gave to Sam and his mum?
+elmohead Best comment!
I think it was 4th Degree...
+Tom_200 - Minecraft & More Nay, a burn of yon sixth degree...

+elmohead Well you know what they say. If you don't want people making fun of your religion, you shouldn't pick a funny religion.
I have metastatic cancer in my 30’s that is aggressive and not responding to treatment well.
I like to listen to this to make me feel better when people say god helped them find their keys or finish a goal or whatever. (F* me and my young kids. Lol). Or tell me their god has a reason for everything and it will be fine.
This song is so perfectly done and has brought me a lot of peace and joy.
Also, I wish he would come to Atlanta soon so I could see him.
No doubt you will be told that God has a greater purpose for you and works in mysterious ways. I will tell you that cancer can go fuck itself. I send you love and fervent hopes for your health and wellbeing. Love to you all. Pete
Big hugs to you Heather, I hope your journey has taken a turn for the better
My gran told me it was God's plan when my dad died aged 36 when I was 4 years old. Even as a child I remember thinking that was rubbish. Wishing you well xx
Tim's reasoning isn't at all far-fetched. I was told I needed surgery on my tear-ducts (weird, I know!) and I turned up FOR THE OPERATION and they looked again and said 'No, there's noting wrong with them' and they sent me home (It was pretty unsettling to turn up for surgery I didn't need. lol). Imagine if I had prayed between these two things happening; many people would think a miracle had occurred.
For sure it's a miracle! Who knows how many people were praying for you without your knowing? It was definitely God that saved your tear ducts!
🤣
yh, thats the weird part of being alive. not everything is an exact science, things can just change
@@jynxed66six54 That's not an accurate representation of reality, only our ignorance and limited perception. Things don't "just" change without rhyme or reason. It's just that we haven't comprehended the situation or process.
@@voodoodolll Things may be just uncomprehendable/random. Synonymous to "just change". (Given ~every sufficiently complex formal system contains statements that can neither be proved nor disproved in it - what can we say about life itself, which exists outside of any formal systems we invent?)
@@voodoodolll Yah I think what Jynxed meant is "the human perception of reality is volatile and deceiving", in that our observations can be erroneous. Medicine isn't like math, where you can prove that 1+1=2. While it is very advanced science, its observations are still strongly educated guesses and can be incorrect.
Hell would not burn as bad as this song does to Sam
Imagine telling this story to Tim and he runs off saying "wait right there, I'll be back in 20 minutes. I've got to tell all my friends!". You hear a truck reverse, see an orchestra and a grand piano come in. Tim starts to play, but ends up just utterly destroying you in front of 72 confused patrons
I'm afraid Sam would not be smart enough to understand, that this song is a burn.
All Tim did was take a stupid person saying stupid things and Tim who is desperate to appear smart, made a song out of it as if Tim has any regard for evidence. Tim claims to go by evidence yet he believes his god of nothing did miracles naturally with nothing as proof it could. Now, Tim should make a song about me and how here counters my science that proves he a disgusting joke.
The atheist/agnostic god. I HATE your god, the god of nothing. Your god claims to have given us the universe, fine-tuning of the universe for life, life from non-life, information for life before and after it began, the laws of nature, etc, etc, when we know that your god of nothing can do nothing. Your god of nothing has nothing to offer and its followers only offer nothing of evidence for their god of nothing. The true God beats the crap out of the atheist/agnostic god of nothing.
It's the atheistic/agnostic types that supply the greatest comedy. They think the universe came about by natural means. There's NO science for it and ALL the science we know proves that creation had to be supernatural and done by a supernatural creator, but...., not to atheists/agnostics. Isn't that funny?!
You can't do it because you devoted your life to the god of nothing and love being a dumbass.
----Real science says nothing does nothing. Once a supernatural creation is accepted, then the next step is finding proof of what supernatural power did it.-----
Then the extreme order we have in our universe that defies all physics, but....., not to atheists/agnostics. It's just happened by mere chances even though we prove it can't happen by chance. Funny!
www.inplainsite.org/html/anthropic_principles.html
kgov.com/fine-tuning-of-the-universe
And life? Well, it just came from non-life. It's so absurd it's even hard to type that, but....., atheists/agnostics claim to believe it happened somehow by natural means. Again, funny!
Many have brought up such issues how funny it is, including James Tour.

Then, what this life did after it started by mere chance can't happen by science, but....., atheists/agnostics believe it did. Funny!
Life takes information to form and proceed on. But to atheists/agnostics, chaos through time gave us information. Although it's even hard to write such a ridiculous statement, they believe it. All one can do is laugh at such stupidity.

I've kept this very basic and brief. I can provide much deeper, yet there's no need to since each point proves there is no explanation for such things to have happened naturally. This IS evidence against such things happening naturally. Lame excuses of why it can still have happened naturally with no science to support it are just that, lame excuses.
There's a ton more. If you want a laugh, see what atheists/agnostics believe.

I know. It's making Tim look like the dumbass he is. Do you thank your god for Tim? Is that what your problem is?
10:53 the immediate relief and excitement from knowing you that you freakin' nailed it.
I read somewhere that he was especially excited because he had made a mistake in the lyrics at the Sydney concert.
I've tried to sing it along with him, and I find it difficult to spit the words out that quickly even if I am reading them off without simultaneously playing the piano and performing!
"Love without evidence is... stalking."
😂😂😂
Well... It's true
This is it. This is the pinnacle of comedy.
I don't know how you can fit more sarcasm into one song. What a fucking genius
Lyrics if anyone wants them:
I have an apology to make
I'm afraid I've made a big mistake
I turned my face away from you, Lord
I was too blind to see the light
I was too meek to feel Your might
I closed my eyes; I couldn't see the truth, Lord
But then like Saul on the Damascus road,
You sent a messenger to me, and so
Now I've have had the truth revealed to me
Please forgive me all those things I said
I'll no longer betray you, Lord
I will pray to you instead
And I will say thank you, thank you
Thank you, God
Thank you, thank you
Thank you, God...
Thank you, God, for fixing the cataracts of Sam's mum
I had no idea, but it's suddenly so clear now
I feel such a cynic, how could I have been so wrong?
Thank you for displaying how praying works:
A particular prayer in a particular church
Thank you Sam for the chance to acknowledge this
Omnipotent ophthalmologist
Thank you, God, for fixing the cataracts of Sam's mum
I didn't realize that it was so simple
But you've shown a great example of just how it can be done
You only need to pray in a particular spot
To a particular version of a particular god,
And if you pull that off without a hitch,
He will fix one eye of one middle-class white bitch
I know in the past my outlook has been limited
I couldn't see examples of where life had been definitive
But I can admit it when the evidence is clear,
As clear as Sam's mum's new cornea
(And that's extremely clear! )
Thank you, God, for fixing the cataracts of Sam's mum
I have to admit that in the past I have been skeptical
But Sam described this miracle and I am overcome!
How fitting that the sighting of a sight-based intervention
Should open my eyes to this exciting new dimension
It's like someone put an eye chart up in front of me
And the top five letters say: I C, G O D
Thank you, Sam, for showing how my point of view has been so flawed
I assumed there was no God at all but now I see that's cynical
It's simply that his interests aren't particularly broad
He's largely undiverted by the starving masses,
Or the inequality between the various classes
He gives out strictly limited passes,
Redeemable for surgery or two-for-one glasses
I feel so shocking for historically mocking
Your interests are clearly confined to the ocular
I bet given the chance, you'd eschew the divine
And start a little business selling contacts online
Fuck me Sam, what are the odds
That of history's endless parade of gods
That the God you just happened to be taught to believe in
Is the actual God and he digs on healing,
But not the AIDS-ridden African nations
Nor the victims of the plague, nor the flood-addled Asians,
But healthy, privately-insured Australians
With common and curable lens degeneration
The story of Sam's has but a single explanation:
A surgical God who digs on magic operations
No, it couldn't be mistaken attribution of causation
Born of a coincidental temporal correlation
Exacerbated by a general lack of education
Vis-a-vis physics in Sam's parish congregation
No it couldn't be that all these pious people are liars
It couldn't be an artifact of confirmation bias
A product of groupthink,
A mass delusion,
An Emperor's New Clothes-style fear of exclusion
No, it's more likely to be an all-powerful magician
Than the misdiagnosis of the initial condition,
Or one of many cases of spontaneous remission,
Or a record-keeping glitch by the local physician
No, the only explanation for Sam's mum's seeing:
They prayed to an all-knowing superbeing,
To the omnipresent master of the universe,
And he quite liked the sound of their muttered verse.
So for a bit of a change from his usual stunt
Of being a sexist, racist, murderous cunt
He popped down to Dandenong and just like that
Used his powers to heal the cataracts of Sam's mum
Of Sam's mum
Thank you God for fixing the cataracts of Sam's mum!
I didn't realize that it was such a simple thing
I feel such a dingaling, what ignorant scum!
Now I understand a prayer can work:
A particular prayer in a particular church
In a particular style with a particular stuff
And for particular problems that aren't particularly tough,
And for particular people, preferably white
And for particular senses, preferably sight
A particular prayer in a particular spot
To a particular version of a particular god
And if you get that right, he just might
Take a break from giving babies malaria
And pop down to your local area
And fix the cataracts of your mum!
Thank you so much! I'm not a native speaker, so I didn't understand all the technical terms clearly. Now I know that he sings "ophthalmologist" which is "Augenarzt" in my language :D, so quite different.
Thank you!
May the flying Spaghetti Monster reward you with many spicy meatballs !
Thank you, much appreciated.
Thank you - the subtitles couldn't even come close to keeping up and kept stuffing up the words.
A friend shared this six years ago this month, and my life changed. Someone who articulated my unspoken views so well. This lead to watching all Tim's videos on UA-cam, going to Twitter to find other fans, then becoming friends on Facebook with them, and now have a 5+ year ongoing group chat with three of these people. So thank you, Tim, for adding the friendships of other humans who have similar beliefs!
01:53 One of the greatest things I've ever seen was a photo at the end of a story about a coworker inserting their religion into the workplace by hanging a cross in the break room.
Our hero, in response, brought in a nice little 2D replica of a guillotine and hung in alongside the cross where both remained in torture device harmony.
