I feel like singers use their voices as a way to spit out lyrics while repeating the same tune. But with Maynard, he blends melody and lyrics together into a fine experience.

After sixteen years, this song still makes me feel so emotional. It reminds me of how it's possible and makes me long to merge spiritually with someone else and experience egoless and timeless, unconditional acceptance. This song gives me peace, when I think of loved ones who have suffered at life's pounding away, how I myself have suffered, to have this reminder that suffering isn't forever. It is real, but it passes. I listened to this song on repeat in my head, like a mantra, to dissociate from the pain of getting tattoo'd for 3 hours. I didn't ever cry out, squirm, or tap out for a break. Fvck my (fvcking flaming eye) tattoos.
Most Tool songs resonate similarly. I remember when I was a mid-teen, and "Flood" resonated more than any song on Undertow. My whole life as a Navy kid had been nomadic, and the sands were forever shifting under my feet. I was touched with a deep understanding that it wasn't going to end, and that being attached to any place or any social belonging or item or belief (basically anything) was futile.
And that I needed to be prepared for the changes, whether I brought them on myself or they were imposed, especially including the effects of climate change. Not to be a naysayer, a doubter, full of "blind faith, ignorance, and the desire for the unprepared to blame others for the devastation left in the wake of change." For me that means trying to learn how to grow my own food in a small space. Got a water barrel. I keep rice and a first aid kit on-hand.
This to me, seems to be the core message of most of what MJK's producing these days, and I thank him for these thematic reminders. It conveys so much hope to me, and it's a message I try to share with the people I love.
Thank you, Tool, for the tremendous art you've given us.
It has sustained me through so many days, with it's multiple layers of craftsmanship and musicianship, humor/ego-destroying self deprecation, metaphor, spiritual renewal, and introspection... My deep appreciation to you all, and Shine On.

One of my favorite songs of all time.
While it's unfortunate that Maynard will probably never be able to rock out like this in a concert ever again, I'm glad to have been able to see him at his absolute peak, this was MJK feeling every fibre of this song within him and projecting it out onto the crowd. It makes perfect sense why he would prefer to perform in the darkness with a back-drop like that. He just wants to emulate the same feelings he would feel in the studio so that everyone can experience it like he does. At heart I do believe that Maynard feels as much as a fan of his own music as those in attendance are.

Adam is a damn wizard on guitar. The master of subtlety. His parts are complex and intricate, yet he seamlessly weaves them in. Never felt more joy listening to a guitarist.
Maynard is like a modern day Jim Morrison, way ahead of his time and a brilliant artist that on stage is mesmerizing to watch.

Nah, his finest was probably 95-97 IMO (at least live) but I do think he added another dimension to his singing around 99-01 that wasn't there previously.

Amazing performance! I especially love the lighting, the camerawork and visuals which give this the appearance of the late 90s. Maynard's voice then elevates this to a religious experience.

2001 was the first year I had ever seen Tool. I didn’t know a lot of about the band but I had heard they put on amazing shows so I got a ticket. There was the most incredible atmosphere in the crowd right before they hit the stage. I was instantly hooked on this band after the show. I remember they had two contortionists hanging upside swaying to the music of this song. So awesome

FYI: Predominately Adam's riffs are in Drop-D tuning, this is one of the few that are Drop-B, which is what gives it that super heavy sound. Another one I can think of right now is Prison Sex, also Drop-B

Actually prison sex he only drops one string as BADGBE, here he does BEDGBE and the results is crazier he gets this harmonic type fuzz and is able to bar off low cords... the result is well .... the best use of fuzz in the history of guitar

"Lateralus" was one of my purchases/forays down the rabbit hole that is metal music. After that, I've been a bon-a-fide metalhead since 2002. I'm not a purist by no means but I enjoy heavy metal a lot. Bands like Suffocation (#2 on a top-10 personal favorite death metal bands list), Necrophobic (Swedish Death Metal), and a few others in the extreme metal side of things.
Lately these past few years I've been digging my heels into djent-style progressive metal/metalcore/whateverdafuckyacallit, mostly sticking to bands like TesseracT, Vildjharta, Humanity's Last Breath, Monuments, Flux Conduct, Messhuggah, Periphery, Circles and a few others these past 5 years. Can't name a favorite band but I do enjoy the style.

In This band I found every single thing I love and seek in metal and music in a generic term. Don't know if is gonna be temporal but I don't really feel like listening anything else but Tool almost every day since I got deep into almost all of their albums pushed by Fear Inoculum. Since 2006 I used to listen them 4 maybe 5 per year. And The Patient has been ALWAYS a personal favourite but was the only I used to play often. But since the click just happened, is 2 or 3 albums daily. I'm a total junkie to their music, not being able to wish listening anything else. Ænina and Lateralus are right now my favourite records over my previous first favourites like DSOTM, In The Court of King Crimson, The Wall, Abbey Road, Camel's Mirage, Close To The Edge, Selling England By The Pound.. but SHIT man this band comes from the future, and moves me in an impeding and addictive way.

AWwww man this brings back memories. I got to see TOOL in Kansas City in a venue that held maybe 3,000 people and got to be right up front. The band was maybe 10 - 15 feet away from us and it was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. The drums alone just take you to another plane of existence, even if it's for a brief moment, but nonetheless it's awesome in the true sense of the word. TOOL harness the primal, the chaotic force of nature and highlight it's beauty and/or ugliness. Love them.
Did anyone ever see 4 Trapeze artist come down on ropes for Parabol?? Swing around & spinning. I been to many Tool shows since 98. It was a smaller venue too. Absolutely amazing. Think it was around 2006. I was hoping to see it on here.
