Congratulations on the great analysis! I’m Brazilian, and Sepultura is a source of great pride for us. Currently, they are on their farewell tour with a different lineup, with Derrick Green on vocals. I recommend a reaction to "Guardians of Earth" from their most recent album Quadra, or "Agony of Defeat" from the same album, where Derrick sings the first part of the song with his natural voice. Speaking of this of vocal, I also recommend listening to Crypta, a Brazilian Death Metal band made up entirely of women, whose vocalist, Fernanda, frequently uses fry vocals. Check out the song "The Other Side of Anger"!
1995/1996 Sepultura recorded in the Xavantes Village in Brazil. The percussion is by Timbalada with the participation of Igor Cavaleira. The recordings were in Minas Gerais and Bahia.
Sepultura is one of the greatest metal bands from Brazil. They are huge! Unfortunately they're doing their last tour before ending their carreer. I had the opportunity to see them here in Campo Grande, MS, Brazil... It was awsome as usual. Beth, big hugs from Brazil!!! ;-)
Sepultura is such a weird memory for me. Growing up in a catholic school I was trained to "fear" the nascent metal scene in the 80s, but my classmates, with a penchant for rebellion, would bring in tapes and discuss the bands. I got to know them as Metallica's antagonist in the "Loudness Wars". I think the first time I paid attention to them was because MTV was rotating heavily Roots Bloody Roots. I thought they were amazing but was aware just recently the Roots record was considered at least a nu-metal precursor. For my money, their best record is Arise, and their best song is Inquisition Symphony.
If you liked the drums and the Brazilian tribal vibe of this song, check out Ratamahatta, a track on the same album. Somehow they managed to mix Brazilian samba and thrash metal in a very catchy song.
@@tdv1973Funny to call Roots industrial, it’s quite the opposite, though I understand the parallel you’re drawing. For me Roots was the quintessential nu metal album. It and Korn’s Life is Peachy was in my mind for nu metal what Sex Pistols’ Never Mind the Bollocks and The Clash’s self titled was to punk. All that came after rose in a way from those. I’ve seen Max in Sepultura, Soulfly and the second iteration of Nailbomb. His show never disappoints. His voice is just as strong now as it was in his early days.

Sepultura were just the best "heavy" band in the early 90's. Love desperate cry, inner self, arise, nomad...soo many of them! Vid for Ratamahatta is killer too!
As I remember this album was quite divisive for many of us after Chaos A.D. (and the even earlier records), but we have to admit that it became a timeless work.
Once someone asked a brazilian musical critic about which was the best band in the world: Beatles or Rolling Stones? The critic answered "SEPULTURAAAAAAAAA!!!!". That still cracks me up.
I'm so happy to see you react to this era of Sepultura. Roots is my favourite Sepultura album. I saw them perform live only once (and it was after Max had left), in maybe 2005 or 2006. They were absolutely brutal : no messing about, they just walked onstage and tried to blow our faces off. It was brilliant. Anyhow, there's some interesting etymology in their name. Obviously, it has its roots (bloody roots!) In Latin. "Sepultura" is related to the English word sepulchre; but it's also a word in English in its own right. It means "the ritual of interment", or, in other words, a graveside funeral. I try to use it as often as I can, but it's surprisingly difficult to work into everyday conversation . . .
I moved to Brazil in my 20s and got married and my now ex-wife’s dad said I look like a member of Sepultura. I took that as a great compliment, especially since I was a musician and Beneath The Remains is one of my favorite albums ever.
Sepultura is incredibly influental in the metal world, great choice! It's been years since the last time I've heard this song, but I still go ROOOOTS BLOODY ROOTS in my head whenever I encounter the word roots haha
My old metal band used to cover this song and I specifically remember one gig where I accidentally headbutted the guitarist's headstock and briefly knocked myself out 😂
I remember this album being released. It was so fresh and interesting. And cool as F. 🤘 Thank you Beth for featuring this. Ratamahatta is another mind blowing track from the album.

Nobody but us were doing Sepultura, or Slayer, or Death covers back then in the Chicago area. It was very exciting. Thank you for your channel.
