My theory is that Pleasance was a religious community separate from the local area aside from buying and selling with outsiders. They get hit with some sort of illness. People crowd around religion in bad times so anyone healthy goes to church as much as possible. Desperate for explanation and safety, religious leaders convince everyone over time that those who are ill are somehow impure and need to be dealt with. It works to a fervor on one particular day and everyone goes home and murders their own sick kin in one big bloody night. The dead where loved in spite of what happened and where thus buried with Christian kindness by their families. Remaining people scatter or move elsewhere as a group to avoid arrests or questions.

If Pleasance was a similar deal to Limpany, since it took place 16 years prior, it’s possible that it was done before Cornwall had enough resources and experience to be more thorough. I wouldn’t be surprised if Cornwall had used moonshine or oil to set Pleasance on fire then left the containers there because nobody was going to go after him. I don’t think he would be the only culprit, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he passed through there because he was considering laying track through the town, but later decided to change course.
As for the lack of crosses on the church, with abandoned old churches, sometimes you’ll find them missing because people like taking them as souvenirs. Crosses at the top of churches tend to be the biggest targets. That was a popular thing to do in my area (along with taking headstones) back in the 1940s-1960s.

    • @undeadranger59

Yeah, my personal theory is that the town was stricken with plague, then attacked by a mob. The associations with Satanism are a bit too strong to shrug off IMO, but it doesn't ultimately matter whether they actually were doing anything or not. I think everyone thought they were, since they were a very small, new town, and saw the plague as a sign from god proving their suspicions. This, along with the general negative sentiment to outsiders in lemoyne, ultimately led a mob to destroy the town. Whether the mob was townspeople, the Raiders, or some other group, it doesn't really matter.
But, I think the Cornwall had some small hand in it, whether by providing fuel for the fires, posting the law to look the other way, or stirring up the people, he probably was involved. But it doesn't seem like he would ultimately care enough to make his goons dig graves or cover it up that well. But, I bet that if a mob had done it, they would be more likely to bury the children and a few victims, since this would have been a subwoofer religious mob.

Thank you Fizhy for keeping the RDR community and content alive and well especially in the midst of its current state being constantly bombarded with washed out low effort content. Your passion for this game reaching 4 years old is awesome, and does justice to a game that deserves well more than the half assedness of others that dilute the true tour de force of storytelling depth and mysticism of the series. You and the Strange Man, great channels that's kept me going for 1200 hours of RDR2 story mode alone from when I first started to the present. Prior to RDR2 I wasn't even a gamer. I was going to Lagras to get an alligator skin for one of the camp upgrades. It was night time and the GPS route took me through Pleasance. I remember just going slowly on my horse through the abandoned town and expecting something to jump scare me but nothing happened. It took me a long time before I felt brave enough to even explore the buildings.

Helltown is a crazy theory that I’ve never heard, and the snake thing def feels a little too obscure for that NOT to be true, but i liked to believe that it was a nod to Undead Nightmare- and all the buried “people” actually went all zombie mode and it was the people of pleasance who were forced to kill them.

So the barn having the words "Stay out, Plague" on it is most definetly a reference to TWD. Mostly for two reasons. The first being that in hte very first episode, when Rick wakes up from his coma, he see's a door in the hospital that says "Stay out, dead inside." The second, and probably the more well known one, is that in the second season. A character named Herschel doesn't think that the zombies are truly dead. He at first thinks they are curable and simply sick, like with a plague. He and his farmhands find zombies, or walkers, and throw them in the barn and try to find a cure for the zombies. Of course, the group finds out about the barn and kills all the zombies, though it is a cool reference.

Considering that the Strange Man (in game Strange Man) basically lives almost on the other side of the swampy lake. And the the word plague is written, SM has over looked the town and made a judgement of some sort. Think about it, which town is in RDR2 plagued and connected to SM, yes Armadillo.
I think that Strange Man had offered some of the same offerings he offers to Herbert Moon, to the a family of Pleasance. But they refused the offer and got the plague, further more after the family’s plague death, the people started to targeting the strange man, who then made his accountants, and suddenly horsemen of apocalypse arrives, murdering the rest of the townsmen.

  • @Jaderosefox
    @Jaderosefox 2 роки тому +48

Theory: what if the "plague" was rabies? The town has a potluck for some reason.... first birth in the town, wedding, birthday, whatever. And someone accidentally brought a tainted dish that the majority of the town ate. The rabies would sweep through like a plague and because at that time it wasn't treatable the townspeople that *didn't* get sick had to mercy kill those that did in self-defense. That would help explain why some were shot and others stabbed. The house with the "unclean sinners" and "ill with sin" signs could have been the ones that brought the dish and the barn was where they were stashing the infected until they could be dealt with or just left to die however.

I think something to keep in mind is that multiple theories can be true at the same time. For example, Pleasance could be modelled after Helltown aesthetic-wise, and be the story a plague wiping out a small town lore-wise.
Personally, I think that's the case here, and I think the multiple deaths on one day are the result of people driven mad by grief and fear killing their loved ones out of desperation.

Hey fizhy there is a mystery I have wondered about but haven’t seen anyone make a video on before. The diary in Compton’s stead mentions a runaway slave and escaped past Rhodes. There is a shack south of Rhodes that contains chains, a hidden photo of a black family and I think a capture request for a slave issued by the ascension plantation (Shady Belle). And there can be found a dead slave with neck brace along one of the beaches. I think these 3 things are related, that a slave of Shady Belle escaped and I think Compson was requested to capture the slave by the owner of shady belle. I think compson held the escaped slave in the shack and the slave hid his family photo there, eventually I think that slave escaped again and died along the beach

Also there’s this insanely creepy glitch that occurs when you encounter Agnes Dowd. If you haven’t heard about it I can post some videos and posts, but I’m guessing you already know about it lool. It’s really really creepy and maybe you could look into it and find out how to trigger it and what exactly is happening.

More points that reinforce the Helltown theory: one of the most famous buildings from Helltown (and one of the few left standing today) is the barn, which looks fairly similar to the one in game. It was closed up for the longest time but has recently been opened. Also, the government purposefully burned down a few of the buildings in order to demolish them

@@lullaby.for.arsonists7329 They took down the rest of the houses and whatnot in 2016, and the school bus has been gone for a while. Iirc, all that remains of note is the abandoned barn and church (which isn’t even the upside down cross church, that one is still in use.) There’s not much to see anymore. Little known fact: as it turns out, the government actually didn’t legally use eminent domain, and the residents were allowed to buy back their properties, but at that point they were already burned down. So basically, the government illegally kicked them out, burned their shit down, and told them they could buy their land back.

    love the RDR2 deep dives.
also, fun fact about Cholera, it's treated by giving the patient rest & clean drinking water if Pleasance was a Cholera camp everyone who died there would have had to contract the disease in the same day that patient zero did for them to all die at the same time. good theory but Idk how accurate it is.

My theory is that pleasance is just like Armadillo, where it was struck by a mysterious illness (like the plague) where it was killing people. Then it was struck by a disaster where people became crazy and started to kill each other. I think something like the strange man may have even played a roll in the demise of Pleasance just like Armadillo (maybe).

Ruyard kipling wrote the Jungle book in 1894/95, 4 to 5 years before the event of the game take place.
In the stories of the jungle book, Mowgli, a young boy is raised by wolves. At some point in the book he encounters a large snake called Kaa. In the Disney depiction of the story, he wraps himself around mowgli and hypnotises him so that he can strangle the boy and eat him.
There's a wolfman/feral man in the roanoake valley area, who is protected by a pack of wolves, that mostlikely see him as family, or a cub.
These little bits of lore in the game, the wolfman/feral man and an abnormal snake sound vaguely and loosely like the events that occur in the Jungle book

I noticed a few months ago that the serial killer, Edmund Lawry jr, or something like that, used the same white paint at his murder sites as whoever wrote on the barn in Pleasance. Dont really know what to gather from this, and it is probably just a coincidence, but it gives me theories.

So this one is out of left field but hear me out. Lemoyne is in the Deep South, post civil war, with the klan and the Lemoyne raiders roving. The klan is basically inept so that leaves the raiders. Perhaps klan or raider activity forced a community of blacks out and into the area. In real life, the klan did use terror tactics for various reasons on anyone who wasn’t WASP after the civil war.
What if this is why Pleasance was founded? To get away from those guys and have a pleasant life away from them, hence the relative remoteness near the bayou. But as we see in the game, the klan is totally inept. But the lemoyne raiders aren’t (totally). Being it’s post civil war south and the raiders are either ex-confederate soldiers, or people duped into believing their cause, they could have attacked during the plague. It’s not the best theory, I know. But there are those facts, and the fact that we don’t know who settled Pleasance. Maybe it was settled for religious reasons, or perhaps to avoid racial persecution. But given the setting and the existence of the raiders, along with the idea of a plague or cholera epidemic, there is a probability this could have happened. But given that, the Cromwell theory you put up is really solid too. I just wanted to look at the idea of it being a local group that’s known to terrorize people in 1899 and has been around for the past 30 years or so in game.

I think it's a weathervane, but the metal pole on the Pleasance church roof has a design that to my mind resembles the Pagan symbology you touched on in your recent video on The Night Folk. Since there's a Pagan symbol painted on a tree nearby in the swamplands, maybe they practiced Paganism and that was seen as Satanism by other surrounding Christian communities. Maybe Pleasance is linked to the Night Folk & Paganism theory you had. Who knows.

Maybe some outside group and a few from the town tried to kill the townsfolk to stop the sickness then the town only had knives so they defended themselves ended up winning the fight and then buried their own (including the ones who turned on them explaining why they buried the ones who got stabbed). Then all the survivors felt the place was a little depressing after all their friends died so they just left

I believe either the Grays or the Braithwaites massacred the town, and then covered it up to avoid any backlash.
With the moonshine bottles, it's likely that the Braithwaites murdered the town and the house was a rival moonshiner business.
After the massacre, there was one or two survivors who either were not in town at the time or escaped as the killers rode in.
This is why there are graves. The bodies were retrieved from the barn and buried.
Why? Either a rival moonshiner business was underway in the town or the Grays and Braithwaites had defectors, which led to the massacre, as the families will not hesitate to kill their own

4)-They start hunting for sinners and witches.

If it weren't for the snake in the tree I'd say the whole idea is a bit of a stretch, but that is _the_ definition of symbolism Satan. Often referred to or represented by a serpent, and he also enticed Adam and Eve to eat the forbidden fruit, sitting in the tree in the form of a snake. I love these little Easter eggs. God I hope we don't have to wait too long for RDR3. An RDR remake should've been done ages ago too.

Strange Man (a youtuber) has made a video where he explains the mystery. As I see it he is right about it since he has been thinking through it. Pleasance was a town whose residents were in fact satanists and were murdered by an angry mob of people who feared and hated them due to that fact. The messages written on the barn and the other house were left by them as a warning to other people. The word "plague" seems to be what's confuses so many people, but it's to be taken literally but is a metaphor for an unclean, evil place which everyone should avoid.

Im not sure if it ties in with the emerald ranch mystery, or one on its own. I thought this was a weird spot that the gang was at, there's a camp they went to maybe after or before the blackwater massecure. It might be worth looking in to. I think it's the book you find for jack called, Otis Miller and the black-hearted lady.
