      It was at least four things that made this once mighty auto industrial might go under; political corruption, foreign competition, greed and outsourcing.

    Great video brought back memories and a lot of sadness.I spent my first 30 years in Detroit before moving to Florida.Detroit was a great city back in the 50s 60s and 70s. I hope it can be again.

      Thank You Gary,
      I could see how great Detroit used to be. It appears they have circled their wagons and are trying to get the downtown area re-vitalized around the casinos and sports teams, but that isn't what made Detroit great Our country has lost its way. Detroit, IMO, is symbolic of the entire United States over the last 50 years.

    Is it worse off than most major cities? Yes. Is it as bad as people make it out to be? No. I'd much rather drive through any neighborhood in Detroit, and I do for work, than drive through the south side of Chicago.

      Detroit is an enormous city, Downtown isn't even 1/4 of it.

    • @DavidisDawei
      @DavidisDawei  9 років тому

      accountnumber90 It was a little eerie...I suspect things might have changed when the Sun went down.
      If you like architecture, make a trip there. Some beautiful buildings, can pick up a cathedral for a song (maybe)
      It is a 2004 Ford Focus - Stick Shift

    • @accountnumber90
      @accountnumber90 9 років тому

      It reminded me a bit of Birmingham on a larger scale. Birmingham's going through a lot of revitalization as well and has similar architecture, although it was never as bad as Detroit.
      It would be an interesting trip for sure!
      I have an '03 Focus. Yours looked very similar, so I just thought I'd ask.

    • @DavidisDawei
      @DavidisDawei  9 років тому

      accountnumber90 The Ford Focus was a great purchasing decision - it has been a very reliable andbfuel efficient car with lots of space, but I made sure I did NOT get an Autmatic transmission.
      I haven't been to Birmingham, Alabama in about 10 years. I think I'll make that trip this Winter when it gets too cold in NH - I would like to explore the Southeastern States the same way I explore those other areas on this trip I went thru Detroit. The USA is in REAL trouble! Our past and present politicians should be ashamed of themselves.

    • @accountnumber90
      @accountnumber90 9 років тому

      Yeah, my Focus has been super-reliable as well.
      Birmingham has changed a lot in the last 10 years (for the better). I moved out of state for ten years and just recently moved back, and I'm consistently amazed at how much better things are. When I was a kid, you didn't go downtown. It was dangerous and there was nothing to do. Now there's all sorts of neat stuff down there and a lot of revitalization of all these great old buildings. It still has a ways to go, but it's getting better. Worth a trip if you ever get the chance.

    • @DavidisDawei
      @DavidisDawei  9 років тому

      accountnumber90 OK - Thanks - I look forward to exploring the revitalized Birmingham.

    Detroit is what happens when liberal social issues are put before business.

    • @DavidisDawei
      @DavidisDawei  9 років тому +3

      +Tnb Spotter
      Could also be a model for what happens when businesses put profits above everything else. GM put a finance guy in charge of the company for the first time in the 1970's and he had no clue about engineering. He didn't understand that cutting dollars did not translate to the best designs. But GM was king back then, so they thought anything they did was OK. They did not respect their competition and did not respect their customers. I suspect their fall impacted Detroit

    • @tnbspotter5360
      @tnbspotter5360 9 років тому +4

      DavidisDawei
      No, that's not it. GM and others moved production to the American south, Canada, and Mexico because it costs too much to operate in Detroit. Foreign brands also set up production facilities other than Detroit. If Detroit wanted those jobs, they would have provided tax rebates, right-to-work laws, less crime, etc. like other cities that want to grow their industrial base. Instead they chose social issues, and abandonment is what they got.

    • @DavidisDawei
      @DavidisDawei  9 років тому

      Tnb Spotter I cannot spell out every detail. That is One factor included in putting profit above everything else.
      Would you buy a GM product?

    Detroit was once a properous city. This is what happens when corporations are allowed to ship jobs overseas instead of keeping them home. Okay the auto workers got to big for their britches but does that justify selling out the american worker and crippling the economy. The unions in the sixties were collecting payback for abuses in the forties and fifties. This is the result. Now their children and grandchildren don't have jobs and the city is pretty much dead. What a shame.

      The oil and auto companies disbanded trolley/train systems across the USA and replace them with gas engine buses, so I am not surprised that Detroit did not add a subway/metro even though it would be better for the rider in the Winter months or when there's heavy traffic

    • @DavidisDawei
      @DavidisDawei  9 років тому

      GameAddict51 Sure, Detroit or anywhere else.
      If businesses continue to suffer/go under and Federal money gets reduced, cities are going to be scrambling to pay for its services...
      property taxes will probably increase significantly.
      Lots of elderly people are forced to sell because their fixed incomes can not cover tax increases.
      I know various people spending $1000-3000 Every month in property taxes...
      Americans do not really own their property. Stop paying your property taxes and see how long it's your property...
      When you factor in how much you paid for a "house", total cash out - most property is not worth owning IMO

    • @SomeGuyWhoPlaysGames333

    I was born and raised in Detroit. I am a Whitey. No bad how you think Motown is now, it was a nightmare in the late 70's. My parents both Detroiters couldn't stomach how far down the African Express the city deteriorated. It was once a gem of a place to live, until a certain ethnic group became the majority.

      You need to stay alert in any city, but I was extremely curious to explore and see the city for myself. As long as you keep moving, you should be fine.
      Michigan was State #49 for me to explore (not counting stopovers at Detroit Airport over the years). Michigan is a huge State with very diverse terrain. You drive a couple hours North out of Detroit and you are in farmland, then you are into the Lake resorts and wine country. You then cross into the UP or the Upper Peninsular up to the Canadian border.
      I never thought much about the State, but Michigan is well worth exploring.

    Say what you want about Detroit, I have great memories of Tiger Stadium, the river front, Greek Town, the RenCen, Red Wings and much more. I've never been afraid to walk the city and have never had a bad incident. The people I met in town, at the bars and restaurants were friendly and kind. Detroit has gotten a bad rap from people who have never spent time there - including the maker of this video

      Not to mention that Chicago has some very dangerous suburbs.
      Chicago is an "inside-out" city. People happily pay $5,000/month rent to live in a downtown skyscraper, while cheaper housing is in the suburbs (especially south of Chicago).

      Thanks. It was a work day in June-2013, mid day into early evening.
      There are sections that appear to be mostly abandoned. Folks probably could not afford to keep the property and walked away. Seeing abandoned churches reminded me of a scene you'd see from a movie like the original "War of the Worlds" .
      Unfortunately, there are many cities around the USA that are in similar condition.
      We have yet to see the worst of this transition downward.
      The US Congress is going to pass the TPP and TTIP, which will be another step towards directing jobs to whichever country wants to work as "slave" labor.
      When you see these videos of Detroit, maybe Detroit made bad decisions, but it is a monument to those politicians and corporations who put their profits above everything else.
      Peace

      DavidisDawei Cheers. Im not in USA , but im watching events VERY closely. i see whats happening, from the TPP fat track to the Military build up on home soil and the Belligerent posturing against Russia / China when it doesn't concern the USA.
      USA, OPEC & Puppet masters dropping the oil price to hurt other nations is hurting USA economy at same time.
      I fear for the US. I think that if the USA start the next war (and they will be directly involved in the flas flag "trigger incident" if it happens - just like fake Tonkin incident for Vietnam & fake WMDs in Iraq) despite having no business in that part of the word.
      USA will lose that war, (as they have lost every other war since ww2) It will be the end of the once great American Empire. Resigned to history books and remembered by generations to come. (if we survive), as a belligerent warmongering Nation no different to Hitters Nazi Germany. The World has had enough. The US should pull all of its assets to home soil, including the NUKES they have at FOBs in Europe. and rebuild their failing nation.
      Im writing a book and parts of it are the usual post apocalyptic, Man made & Natural decay of our human race. Your video has inspired me to get a move on - so thanks brother..
      Would love to write it as a screen play and film it on location throughout the world.
      If I need a fixer in Detroit, i will seek you out LOL - dreaming again.
      Until then, I think we have dark times ahead.

    What was the point of this video? To make fun of the city & the people who live there? Detroit may not be the best place ever but you never truly know what it's like until you live there. Please don't think this is an accurate description of my city.
    p.s. I highly doubt this was recorded in the afternoon (at least the downtown scenes). I am downtown EVERY day & I never see it that empty unless it's early in the am.

    • @DavidisDawei
      @DavidisDawei  9 років тому

      Legaahgurl321
      I suggest you post your own video then if you want to show something different.
      What you saw in this video is what I saw on that time and date. I was there a portion of ONE day and detoured over to see Detroit since I had not had the time to do so before
      The reason I record videos is to capture memories.
      I talk to the video camera to document time, date and whatever I'm thinking or feeling at that time. It is much more accurate than my memory over time.
      If I mention a specific day or time, it is accurate.
      If I don't know, I'll say "I think it is so and so day or time"
      Do the Tigers play in the early AM?
      Look at the sun and the shadows on the buildings/ground.
      How well do you know Detroit?
      Clearly, Detroit, like MANY cities across the USA, are in trouble and do NOT have a solution.
      I do not recall making fun of anyone, but I will say that you will never improve anything if you continue to think everything is A-OK.

      +Cross swords Productions My friend lives a block away from "Burns and Gratiot", google it. His street now has 7 houses of 21 left. 9 empty lots (the burned out houses were torn down), and 5 burned out homes that have NOT been torn down. This area, that includes "Gratiot, Van Dyke, Harper, Mack, 94 freeway, and Seven mile", is defined (by murder and major crime stats), the WORST part of Detroit to exist in....at any time of day. So, in answer to your question...there ARE a LOT of fires and in many circumstances a "let it burn" policy is used because the Fire department is woefully understaffed...especially in that area. Anyone that says different, does NOT know what they are talking about.

    • @tima557
      @tima557 9 років тому

      +Cross swords Productions: To support the facts in my previous post: The Detroit News just printed a very long article regarding the excessive amount of fires in Detroit. This year, from January to July there were over 2200 fires, 1700 structural fires of which over 700 were occupied. Yes there are a lot of fires in Detroit. It's too bad when BLM says "burn baby burn", the people actually take it to heart.

      The citizens of this country accept spending trillions of dollars to bomb foreign countries and pay banker bonuses, but then fight tooth and nail not to maintain and invest in their own country for all of its people to enjoy.
