Should you adjust the inner burr setting on your Breville Barista Express, Pro, Touch, Oracle?

  • If you have runny coffees coming out of your Breville espresso coffee machine, you need to see this before changing your internal burr grinder adjustment.
Runny coffee usually means stale/old beans, coarse grind size, little dose, little/uneven tamping.

I've owned my barista pro for nearly 3 years. I have never had to touch inner settings. Today is the first time I've ever struggled dialling in. Grinding as fine as possible & the coffee is pouring out. But yes, very rare to actually need an adjustment

This video saved me. Changed the internal setting in my pro to 4 upon unboxing due to some videos I saw here in youtube, and beans just got stuck with no grinding on the first grind. Had to clean and vacuum everything left in the burrs. Changed it back to internal 6 and external 15 and pulled my first shot which not bad actually. Might have been my beans that caused the initial issue, I don’t know. But thanks for this video mate!👊🏼

Maybe I had bad luck and my unit was not properly adjusted from the factory, but I was never able to get a good extraction using the factory setting "6" on the outer burr. I've spent months and hundreds of dollars with several types of coffee, and all my shots were under extracted. Right now I have my outer burr set at "3" and side dial also set to "3" for a Ruta Maya median roast. I've inspected the outer and inner burrs and don't see signs of them running against each other.

Thank you for the input, yes i believe it's there to account for factory tolerances, and sometimes it is necessary to go to 4 or 3, but i'd do it in steps (1 number at a time), and to stop the moment you hear loud metallic noises!

Hello, I'm sorry, but I'm translating this question through a translator, I have a sage barista express for about 5 months, after 2 months something went wrong with the grinder and I complained to the store, the stones were touching each other, they replaced the whole grinder, but when I make coffee, I use number 8, the coffee doesn't flow bad on it, when i switch to 7, the coffee hardly flows, when i switch to 9, the coffee flows really fast, do you think if i switch this internal grinder, the grind range will be fixed? and try switching up or down?

What you don’t take into account is that the beans themselves will push the metal parts away from each other. So it may sound that the metallic parts touch but with beans in, it probably does not. But I agree that it if is new then probably 4 is maximum. I have mine on 4 and it’s a pretty new machine. Also when the burr is old you may have to adjust as you point out.

I think i have the older version. I baby the machine, clean and also decalcify it regularly. Just bought a fresh bag of lavazza from woolworths or coles i think, and had low pressures. Turned my grind size down to 1 and tamped it with just about as much force as i could and still low pressure. So frustrating. Plus, i can hear the burrs really labouring at 1 grind size. Should i just take machine in to a service centre? Also, i fill my hopper up but sometimes the beans in there wont get consumed for a week. Is this the wrong approach? Just feel like it would be annoying to empty leftovers each time, or top up if i misjudge how much i need for the day.

    • @caffeinefix2751
      @caffeinefix2751  Рік тому

Thanks for a detailed explanation. Yeah so over the years the burrs will ever so slightly move away and the grind size will increase as it wears out. That's why on the newer models the burr has a setting. In older machines, there's an internal calibration mechanism that does approximately the same thing but takes longer to do of course.
Regarding beans, not super knowledgeable about lavazza they can be good but also if they've been on the shelf too long that will certainly result in lower pressure and faster shots. Try aldi or better yet a locally roasted small bag of beans 250g probably about 15 bucks. Certainly pricier than Coles or aldi but will give you higher pressure at the same grind size as you're using.
Lastly, I wouldn’t recommend filling the hopper especially if you don't drink that much. You can either single dose (keep the hopper empty and only grind 18g every coffee) or fill a quarter and refill as needed. The top layers of the coffee will age and lose freshness over the week and that again will make it runny and less pressurised.
If the aldi or fresh beans don't help much and you're on the minimum grind size (barista express model bes870 with the round bean hopper not the square one) then you could bring it to a service centre for assessment. If you're in Melbourne, I'm happy to do this for you.
      Mohammad.

When I started 3 years ago with my Sage (Breville barista express) I used mostly grind size 8 to get the best coffee, over time I was using lower and lower settings and now I realized coffee is flowing too fast and my grind size is 1 and I was stuck.... so thank you for solving this mystery, I am going to play with this inner setting now :)

I set my burr adjustment to 4 and have set the adjuster on the side of my machine to 4 and gotten pretty good results. Burrs have never touched, and I think Breville have designed the grinder in such a way that the burrs won't touch even if you use the finest settings. Considering their products are consumer grade (rather than pro-sumer level) they tend to be fairly idiot proof.

They will touch if you go grind size 1 on both the outer and inner, sadly. When that happens, new burrs right away

Thank you for explaining so clearly.
Pretty much your saying the outer dial is a fine adjustment compared to the inner burr settings.
And you said older gassed off, stale beans could a cause of low pressure just as I was thinking too!
I will try fresh bought beans and see if I can get the pressure back up with original settings. If the pressure is dropping with any given bag of beans, it could indicate they are getting old from what you're saying.
Bulk purchases are a better deal, or so we think? Not if you can't use them before they go bad.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and tips.

    • @caffeinefix2751

That method is quite a bit more involved and will require opening of the machine, and if done incorrectly can damage the burrs and the motor, perhaps you could take it to a technician or bring it to me (if you're in Melbourne Australia!). The other option is to order the new top burr (with adjustment) online

i roasted my own beans for many months, my grinder setting is always constantly set at 13, inner burr 6. I have not been changing this setting for a few months. The main reason is, my roasted beans is always fresh and consume within 3-6 days. I had ever encountered stock beans that over 1 month, i have to change the outer and inner burr from time to time.

I got a question: I manually adjusted the grinder to 13 using the touchscreen (Barista Touch). The thing is, when I turn the machine off and then turn it on later on, the touchscreen signals the grinder is at 14. Does it do that automatically or is it some kind of mistake? Thank you, that was very informative. My machine's just over a year old and I recently bought a bag of Lavazza beans from the supermarket, weighed exactly 18g, evenly distributed, evenly tamped etc. With the outer grind setting on 1 and the internal burr set at its default of 6, pressure was definitely too low. I've since adjusted the internal mechanism to 5 and the pressure's much better. However, given the (approximate) 3-1 ratio between outer and inner mechanisms, am I better off moving the outer setting from 1 and adjusting the internal setting to compensate, or vice versa? To be honest, given my wife prefers a less robust flavour, I'd prefer the outer grind setting up at around 14 but I guess I'm largely governed by the beans I'm using? Any assistance greatly appreciated.

Just saw the word lavazza and read your comment because funnily enough, that's the last bag of beans i bought, which prompted me to look this up due to absolutw frustration of having too low pressures. I would put my grind size down to 1 and tamp it with most of my body weight behind it and still get low pressures. Maybe lavazza is just no good 🤷
