ER12 and steam leak repair Breville Oracle Touch BES990BTR pre 2023 verison - video for Saranya
This breville Oracle Touch coffee machine was used in a commercial setting in a premium hair salon. Although it's doable, commercial use for domestic coffee machines requires regular maintenance services and checkups. Of course, leaks will happen sooner, pumps will need changing sooner, and everything will need more TLC.
I'd say a service is needed every 6 months if it's something like 10-20 cups a day, such as an office setting. Constantly being on and hot, and also regular heat and cool cycles, will make the components wear more and shrink more than average, leading to steam and water leaks. That's why the service is recommended.
This is especially necessary on machines manufactured before 2023. Mid 2022 they updated the design to all metal nut screw on Teflon fittings instead of copper grommets and silicone orings and u clips.
In this case, the customer made over 4000 coffees in under 18mths so that's about 10 cups a day. Not accounting for the duration the machine stays on or the number of heat - cool cycles. As a result the steam boiler leaked a lot of steam over time and caused short circuiting in the triac board and boiler overheating and error codes. And the customer got the er12 code on screen. In some cases when this happens the motherboard may get permanently damaged because of the corrosion and rust from the steam. In this specific scenario, the customer was lucky because after letting everything dry and fixing the leaks, the machine went back to normal.

Surprisingly better sounding than straight piping / disconnecting the mufflers as per my previous video. This is now a good level of loudness and deeper tone for a daily used car.

Breville Oracle / dual boiler leaky probe issue fixed with internal O-ring replacement
Переглядів 4663 місяці тому
if your Breville Dual Boiler or Oracle is overheating or making funny behaviours and noises, showing steam on the screen, or tripping the house fuse, it's most likely to be leaking steam internally. These 3 probes are by far the most common culprit. Repair can be via replacement of the probes (and o-rings on other ports above boilers to be safe) but in this case I change the tiny silicone seals...

I am from India I am a technician I need this upar burr but its spare parts are not available in India can you send me to India
Wow, it looks like you cut out the section and put flanges on it, so the mod is reversible? That’s neat
@@yenny527 yeah! I was thinking maybe 2 res out is overkill and may cause issues for comfort travelling out of town, but no it's very bearable and not a distraction, at least as a car guy haha. If selling it or growing up in the future, that's possible. Was an extra 100 bucks for the flanges. I'd rather the flexibility of reversing vs having to re weld everything back
I’ll probably go this route and buy some wheels
Manual froth on this machine is always watery for me
@@aRk0_aus that is due to technique. It all depends on angle and depth of the wand in milk. You can get good foam with any decent manual wand (even the cheaper breville Barista Express can get good foam despite being single boiler). I did manual mode yesterday on an Oracle Touch and it was creamy with thick foam
@@caffeinefix2751 Can you provide us a video as I have the same machine, it will be very helpful mate.
Can you install a brew pressure gauge on duo temp pro?
@@felixolivares9129 it would be possible to attach temporarily for testing purposes with the machine disassembled but I'm not sure if there's a way to attach one permanently. Why do you wish to attach a gauge? You can also invest in a scace device which is a portafilter with gauge attached to it
Now why cant all exhaust videos be made like this 👍
Can you give us more details about the Preinfusion settings? Mine is 65 and 5 sec. I use medium-dark roast I still feel bitter taste. 22g in and 42out within 30sec. I set my water temp to 88C but I would love to see if preinfusion settings will change the bitterness
@@aRk0_aus hi, I actually haven't experimented with pre infusion settings as much as I like coffee! I'd expect more prev infusion would change the flavour to more sweet and thicker body, at least that's what the professionals say. Bitter taste could mean temp is too high, flow rate too slow (fine grind size) or roast too dark. Your temp is 88 and flow seems about right so my only guess is if the beans are too old or just the type and roast level. Is it robusta or Arabica? Robusta is more Bitter. Dark roasts will also be more bitter
@@caffeinefix2751 I use robusta and my current grind settings is 16.5 using DF64Gen 2 with DLC burrs. I got 44 out within 26 sec which is fine but the bitterness is bit harsh
I’m picking up one of these next Saturday it’s refurbed also but comes with a 12 month warranty
Love the new sound mate
First time to see this video and i been inside this car and i love it
But underwhelming I gotta admit. Expected more rumble judging by other UA-cam videos
I have this exact problem. I can not find the air pump replacement for my BES990
Best of thr best
Best of the best
Hi. Thanks for the video. Do you have one for the older version of the Dual Boiler, as I think that is the model I have?
Thanks! We have this issue (secondhand Oracle, at least 5 years old I’d say), no one locally to look for a possible internal issue - if I try changing the settings but it doesn’t help, would that indicate it’s one of the mechanical issues? (Process of elimination?).
Sounds terrible
@@simonmessina4774 fair fair
Thank you, I had the same issue with my Lelit Mara X stock portafilter to the point where the basket would sometimes get stuck in the group head. This solved the issue for me.
Issue I have is first milk froth is great, second straight after is watery? Any ideas?
@@brianvanginkel80 that's strange. Hmm. Could be that the air pump over heats or doesn't work as effectively second time around, maybe give it few minutes to cool? More likely, if you're using the same jug and it's warm or hot at the end of first batch, it will warm up the second batch of milk and reduce time of frothing. Wand will also be quite hot and warm up the milk. Strange issue indeed, I haven't come across it.
Thanks for the video. I have an Oracle that was given to us that has a bad brew boiler it’s popping the safety switch only when it’s hot. The resistance to earth on the left terminal on the brew boiler drops to about 90k ohms on the right terminal it’s about 9 meg ohms. Do you have a video on how to replace it? I am a sparky and it doesn’t look hard.
@@PubRunner happy to help! sorry for the silly question but have you looked at the machine under full pressure and does it leak any steam? Steam leaks are the number one cause for popping safety switches and most overheating issues and anything showing funny behaviours. if you do have questions regarding electrical circuitry or motherboards and thermostats, join the Facebook dual boiler group and the Facebook breville owners group. A couple of the members there, namely Sean gambles and Luke Heunks, are very knowledgeable and sre breville techs familiar with this sort of thing
@@caffeinefix2751 yeah I have there is no condensation or signs of steam. I ran it with the lid off. Btw I am an electrician by trade so I have half an idea what I am doing. I disconnected the brew boiler by cutting the wire and measured the resistance to earth and when hot the resistance drops on the left hand terminal to about 90k when hot but about 7 Meg ohms when cold so I am as sure as I can be that the brew boiler is the issue. All the other elements meter fine to ground. I can get the brew boiler, and two required hoses for $210. I would also do all the o rings and that’s another $19. The other issue is the hot water dispenser doesn’t work but I did find the left hand hose was squashed this hose would be replaced with the new boulder as it is slightly different to what is in my machine
Thank very much. Your video was more instructive and helpful than Breville’s own videos.
Can you backflush this 860 model? Also can the bean hopper be removed with beans inside?
@@boncreationsza yes you can, but beware because this model is now over 12 years old and the components inside may be worn or leak steam and water so a service is very important every 3 years. Yes the hopper locks and beans can be removed with hopper
Stop being cheap.....guy
Sounds as good as a $3000 system. Not cheap, I'm just being reasonable 😉. If I were cheap I wouldn't get an fl5!
@caffeinefix2751 Hahahahahah that's funny...it sounds like you cut the cats.....3000 dollar system ...Hahahahahah clown.
The same thing is happening to me except mine is a Miele and you can't take the grinder apart.
The master
How do we find you on facebook
I guess i can tell you why this is happening, i just figured out. It is because the plastic housing doesn't fit straight anymore and has an angle that's why it needs more force to grind the beans. It probably got worn out due to the forces that happens in the grinding process. That's also why the new burr clicks in louder than the older one.
Is there any way to adjust the extraction temperature of this machine ?
@@mrmertah5412 on the bes860 model it's not possible, it's fixed at 93 which is actually quite good. On newer models like bes878 it is possible to change by +/- 2 degrees Celsius but most people keep it at the default 93 anyway. What makes you want to change the temperature?
Well, the external thermometer tells me that the temperature of the water coming out of the grouphead does not exceed 75 degrees Celsius Even when I try to heat the head by drawing empty shots, the water temperature remains below 83 degrees. The only solution I went with is to recirculate the hot water from the cup to the tank three or four times until the water temperature that come out of the grouphead reaches 91.
where to buy the new burr replacement
@@sylc7529 search on Google, should have a few results. In Australia mainly, there are many sellers here
Thanks for this video. I just picked up one of these second hand and I'm doing my own service on it. Good to know how to program it.
Damn same issue now, my barista express is now 1yr old. So I need to replace the whole? together with this black hard plastic and the circle metal with teeth?
Yes, they come in one piece
@@caffeinefix2751 thank you! Its too hard to find a seller for this here in PH 😭
Long time BES920 owner (on my 3rd) and all 3 have what I call the 'post nasal drip syndrome' whereby the hot water outlet (not the steam wand) drips / leaks during shot extraction, especially under high(er) pressure (~ 9+ bar) I finally begged a VP at Breville to send me the hot water valve (actually the 'needle valve') which in the end, they were so kind as to let me purchase one for $30.00 USD (Part # SP0014213) After replacing it the PNDS stopped....for a few months, only to return like clock work. I have surmised the issue to be with the o-rings themselves and not the actual valve component. I basically need $.02 parts to fix a $30.00 issue on a $1,300.00 machine. Any idea where I could obtain replacement o-rings for the SP0014213 needle valves?
Hey Jeffrey! I wasn't aware of the oring issue, frankly never changed a needle valve or disassembled one in my 4 years of experience but I am aware of the syndrome you refer to. This will sound silly but it may happen when the hot water tap is ever so slightly turned upwards / on. An inadvertent slayer mod of sorts haha! Close it gently and it may stop the drip. If not (and I've had a couple machines that still dripped after closing the knob) then you can actually put some force and turn the knob more closed/clockwise, you'll feel it tighten like a screw, do this for a tiny amount at a time and you'll hopefully see an end to the PNDS!
@@caffeinefix2751 Thank you for the fast response! Oh my friend, I do wish the 'check the simple things first' worked however I am sad to say no luck. I've tried that many, many times (mostly out of boredom) and played with the knob itself as well, though after repeated attempts and tinkering, what really "fixes" it is a full needle valve replacement. That said, the last time I dug into it I used the new inner core (with the new o-rings) on the existing valve body and it worked as expected so I deduced it to be the o-rings. I have a digital caliper and can easily measure the diameter however the thickness and inner diameter is harder, and I don't know where to buy a few without having to buy a bag of 1,000! :)
@@caffeinefix2751 I found a place online and ordered some replacement o-rings for the needle valve - I'll reply back once they arrive and I have swapped the valve out. Also, I am curious, when I set the temp on the machine at say 200F (assuming that is the 'Coffee Boiler' temp, should the grouphead temp match that, and be 200F? I am seeing the group be about ~4d F lower than the set temp. Unsure how accurate the temp probes are but assume they are indeed accurate - I have pretty soft water and descale on schedule but is it possible the grouped probe has scaling? Easy to check?
Best video ever! Mine got 1st cup perfect but 2nd cup watery, what would be the reason? I will update next week after deep cleaning my machine (just bit sared of descale the machine😂)
Hi my tamp lights are not working I get a beep but the lights do not illuminate no matter how much I dose. Do you know what this could be?
Hi, i’ve seen this issue before and was not able to fix it. The only thing I will say is make sure you’re being hopper is locked, that is one of the causes
Verry Interesting, have the same issue as in the Beans dont grind but every thing looks and measures the same... Yet to solve the issue. Orical and a Touch and burrs are the same, so will swap and see if I get a change in behavour.
Let me know! The burrs may be different depending what year the machines were manufactured
Did new burr solve it?
I thought the Korg sounded better than all of them
fair enough! It does have a wholesome echo-y ambiance to it
Thanks
Great video. I have the same issue. Can you provide more details on the silicone O rings. Specifically what sizes are needed to replace all of them, how many, where to get them, etc. Thanks again!
No problem! It was clear silicone 1.5mm cs 2mm ID 5mm od. Bought like 100 from aliexpress for few bucks. You need 3 for the probes. For the red and blue orings it's different measurements, bs007 for the small ones and bs010 for the large ones as per photo. The process to remove the small probe orings is a bit annoying, there are clips above the white part you need to remove with your nail and a screw driver or something, then the white bit slides up to expose the old crusty ring, remove it with a clothes pin or small needle, then make sure the probe is clean when inserting the new one, some silicone grease helps lubrication and longevity on new orings.
@@caffeinefix2751 Thank you!!!
Always doing a good job
If you hate the pumped in engine noise why dont you just unplug the module behind the glove box? Its not difficult to do, you just need a plastic pry tool, philips head screw driver and potentially an 8mm socket if you have trouble unscrewing the bottom ones with the screwdriver
Thanks for the instructions! I don’t actually hate it. And it can be turned off if you turn it off from the customised settings
Thank you! This video helped me out a lot

Thanks for your content. I came here from the porta filter spring video. You’ve made my mornings!
Excellent video. Worked well and has my leaky group head issue sorted
Sounds great I just subscribed.
Can you do something similar for the touch impress? The service mode loads on that machine, but it asks for a name instead of a code...
Check the video description, they've done something cheeky and changed the password for the touch impress
@@caffeinefix2751 tnx!!! that worked, sorry, totally missed that =)
Your hand covers the screen while you try to show features. You don't sound clear, maybe you know what you are talking about but it;s not clear to us. Just wated my time
This video was intended for my customer, Cherrie. Nothing interesting to see on the screen. My voice is quite clear, or at least it's clear enough for the auto captions to work :) the cc button will bring up the text captions. I recorded with my phone so not a professional setup of course perhaps you need to bump up the sound? I think you wasted your own time watching a video that you can't hear lol
Where did you get the replacement pump or what is the part number?
At the time i did a quick google search of breville Oracle air pump and bought the cheapest one. It's the genuine part number SP0001859
Can you make a video of the replacement process?
Can do one in the future. Are you waiting to do this repair yourself and outside warranty? Did you try the first steps before considering the repair? Mainly the steps are to open the machine, unplug the air pump cable, wiggle the air pump out of its holder and it comes out with the clear tube, unplug the clear tube under the air pump and NOT LETTING GO OF THE TUBE , this is the hardest and most important step and if you let it go it will be pulled down deeeeep into the machine and a pain to fetch, which would involve removing the back panels and navigating a million wires. Replug tube to new pump, click pump in place, plug cable, test then close machine after confirming the issue is fixed. If the issue is not fixed or at least improved with new pump then I'd just return the old pump into the machine and get a refund for the new pump or sell it or keep it for future.
My oracle produces a decent froth in manual mode but not in auto mode, what would be the issue? thanks
Have you tried any of the 4 methods in the video?
The Oracle is hands down the biggest piece of junk I ever bought. Total waste of money.
Sorry you feel that way. What makes you say that?
@@caffeinefix2751 Quality. Perhaps I was the anomaly, but the first machine I bought went back for service 4 times for 4 completely separate issues - @ 4th return - they just sent me a brand new machine! New machine worked for about a month then started having problems (would make loud electrical clanking noises while plugged in and turned ‘off’ - like a ghost was inside). Breville didn’t want to take any ownership of the problem, but finally was willing to take that machine back for repair. Upon its return, machine worked for a few months then one day wouldn’t fully warm up - temp would get to about 170 and just dance around a few degrees up and a few degrees down, but never hitting 200 so machine was unusable. Top of machine above steam display became untouchably hot (like burn your hand hot) and completely unusable. I can’t believe I even had capacity to call Breville again at that point, but they gave up - told me to pound sand. It’s in garage collecting dust - good riddance.
