NBA Hangtime is a basketball video game developed and published by Midway and released for arcade in 1996. Home versions followed for Nintendo 64, PlayStation, Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, Super NES, and Microsoft Windows. A version for Game.com was cancelled.
Hangtime was the third basketball game by the original development team behind the NBA Jam series. The title was changed due to the NBA Jam name being acquired by Acclaim Entertainment, the publisher of the games for the home market. Acclaim's NBA Jam Extreme was released the same year as Hangtime. Features introduced in Hangtime included character creation, alley oops and double dunks. A software update known as NBA Maximum Hangtime was released for the arcades later in the life cycle. A sequel, NBA Showtime: NBA on NBC, was released in 1999.

I'm a 40-something and I love this game! So much money and time spent in the Arcade in the mid 90's! Loved every minute! Even tangling w the bullies outside! The soundtrack is epic, hommie!! Kids now have no idea of the social experiment that was!

I played this game every day with my friend a wet summer back in the day. It was on Nintendo 64, and we had a blast and broke a controller, just by playing so much ( and partly in frustrating, when loosing in the last seconds 😊) oh yeah that were great times
Always loved this game. Midway knows presentation, and they nailed it here. Great sound and detail in the graphics.
It's too bad this didn't have the same popular appeal as NBA Jam. It is almost a completely superior game. But NBA Jam got in to the zeitgeist.
Yea it's basically the new and improved NBA Jam after Acclaim backed stabbed Midway to get the rights to the NBA JAM name
Just wish they could of used of the NBA Jam name and make an official NBA jam2 would of got more mainstream attention!

It was going to be followed by NBA Hangtime 98 for the 1997 basketball season but passed in favor of NFL Blitz. Ironically Midway made a game that was originally started as Visual Concepts' NBA tech demo called NBA Fastbreak 98 for PlayStation.
The sequel is called NBA Showtime: NBA on NBC
They should do an arcade 1up with NBA jam TE, this game and WrestleMania the arcade game.

Toss up between PC and N64 but the Ps1 version had different music if that count's for anything.

Jordan didn’t allow himself in anything without a special contractural agreement. And Midway didn’t get it for this game. However, there is ONE special version of NBA Jam TE I believe that actually has him playable, but only like 2 or three of the machines were made since they were for personal use and not public arcades. Apparently arcade 1up managed to get that version on there.
