I feel like she could have been an amazing soprano star!! Her voice is truly unique and powerful! I have been watching this video since ot was posted 10 years ago and am still as obsessed as ever! Something about her charm and presence and voice is so captivating! I read somewhere she understudied as Christine in Phantom, meanwhile her voice is almost too good for that role! Love her!
My voice teacher just assigned me this piece. wow. I have no idea how I'm going to make this song look that easy!! I have lots of work to do! in the words of sweetsoprano92: =O
I'm so insanely jealous of her voice. She gets up to dog whistle-like notes without any trouble at all. And it's so clear and beautiful. And my jealousy isn't helped by the fact that she's gorgeous. *sigh*
Poor wandering one Though thou hast surely strayed Take heart of grace, thy steps retrace Poor wandering one Poor wandering one If such poor love as mine Can help thee find true peace of mind Why, take it, it is thine Take heart, no danger lowers Take any heart but ours Take heart, fair days will shine Take any heart, take mine Take heart, no danger lowers Take any heart but ours Take heart, fair days will shine Take any heart, take mine Poor wandering one Though thou hast surely strayed Take heart of grace, thy steps retrace Poor wandering one Poor wandering one Poor wandering one Take heart, take heart Take any heart but ours Take heart, take heart Take heart, no danger lowers Take any heart but ours Take heart, take heart Take any heart but ours Take heart
@keckm88 Just confirmed by playing along on a keyboard - it is scored for Db, but she cheekily reaches up to Eb on two occasions (1:28 - 1:30 and 3:29 - 3:33).
I went to opening night of this play last night. My brother is Major General. The girl who played Mabel was INCREDIBLE. She easy hit every note in this song.
Wait. Drums? "Shoop-shoop?" Well, now I wanna see this version! Also, those cadenzas?! Girl looked at her watch and said, "Y'all didn't have anywhere to be, right?"
@bmrhea92 I had a friend who sang this role. I asked her how on earth she did the staccato. She showed me by twitching her diaphragm like crazy. I could see it going up and down under her shirt!
This is one of my favorite performances of that piece - great comic timing. Best Mabel I think - great combination of voice and comic talents. There are certainly voices who are more perfect, but after all, this is Gilbert and Sullivan, not Barbiere! Great performance!
I love this so much. Such a fantastic scene. Not only because she is a fabulous singer, but because she gets to do basically what he had done just previously to her sisters - be like "Look at me and my fabulousness while you stand there and watch me and wait". Take that, Fred :D.
keep in mind people that productions like these cost money...and that orchestras can cost a lot of money...and unfortunately...there is something known as a 'budget' I still think it's a fantastic performance.
While the voice is amazing.., what truly sets this performance APART.., is how she assumes the coquettish quality of the character. Every move thorougly hits the mark. And.., it's LIVE.., on STAGE.., absolutley nothing "STUDIO" about it.
You are right. Donaldson sings this part better than Masterson (as good as Masterson was, and I usually hold her up as my favorite G&S soprano). I think I probably prefer Masterson for the Mikado, though.
Poor wand'ring one! Though thou hast surely strayed Take heart of grace Thy steps retrace Poor wand'ring one! Poor wand'ring one! If such poor love as mine Can help thee find True peace of mind Why, take it, it is thine!
I remember seeing my late elder sister's school, North London Collegiate School production of Pirates in 1956 and since then I have adored the melodies & humour of G&S
I saw this production when I was a kid, must've been in '94 or '95. It made a big impression on me. They did the Mikado the following year but I didn't like it as much.
Great. Its funny and she has a beautiful voice. I actually didn't mind the doo-wop chorus girls on this particular song. I hated them in the Mikado though; the songs were practically unrecognizable.
Thank you! I finally actually understand the piece. I haven't seen anyone else portray the actual point of the song - thank you for being the first person I've seen to actually tell the story.
I just found out my high school is gonig to be donig this next year, and lately I have really been trying ot improve my soprano singing voice, and this now is just completel motivation!
Amazing voice! I played Mabel in a school production many years ago. This brings back so many memories. I wish I could still hit those high notes.....but her soprano is outstanding!
+tigrrr12 This is, in my personal experience., among the greatest ever songs written. Such amazing music to back some the loveliest lyrics to come from the marriage of Pen and Paper. Her voice is is so clean and rich and that solo was just Epic. Thank you so very much for uploading this version to share with us all.
i cant lie.ive seen too many of these versions of Pirates where theyve up'd the comedy and added all this extra "modern" stuff meant for humor but it took alot from the music and dance that can really be done.and in my opinion its cuz its too hard for anyone to do well the original way it was made.which is a shame.
Yes, a winning Mabel in this production, but a winning Frederic also. Simon Gallaher has a pleasing stage presence, good mobility and an unusually clear, unforced voice (Oh, is there not one maiden breast) . . .
Yes, well. I'd be upset if someone did this to some really serious opera, but you have to remember that Gilbert and Sullivan were really just trying to be silly. It was a different audience, but this is by no means entirely-serious music. I'm offended by the Broadway version because it feels like it's trying to be good and failing. This one is trying to be irreverent and, in my humble opinion, succeeding, so I'm fine with it.
It's a sendup of opera that also works as opera. She's really good! But why is the chorus played by men? And why are wearing beehives - is that a postmodern reference to the Supremes?
yes, she is exquisite in every way, and Frederic is good too in spite of being really skinny.. But the sisters.....I dunno...they're kinda weird you must admit!
Love her!
i love when performers actually take cadenzas! It's upsetting how easy she makes this song sound. Her voice is perfect for this role.
She sings the high notes very well in the Take Heart passage, each note clear and not all sliding into each other. That is how it should be sung.
This is a voice against which I will now have to judge all others.
My voice teacher just assigned me this piece. wow. I have no idea how I'm going to make this song look that easy!! I have lots of work to do! in the words of sweetsoprano92: =O
lol i love how he drops his bag when she hits the high note in the middle XDD
I'm so insanely jealous of her voice. She gets up to dog whistle-like notes without any trouble at all. And it's so clear and beautiful. And my jealousy isn't helped by the fact that she's gorgeous. *sigh*

I'm auditioning for Mabel tomorrow. I'm singing this song for it.
Willow Byrne Did you get the part? Two years late, I know 😂
Willow Brook i know that was 4 yes ago but how did it go
5 years late, I'm looking forward to your tale!
Willow Brook bit late, but was it ok ?
WILLOW BROOK DID YOU GETVTHE PART
Lovely singing from this beautiful soprano. She has bell-like tones.
Just when you think she can't possibly get any higher ... WOW! Sends shivers down my spine every time!
the last nights to this song always remind me of The cadenza in Phantom (Think of Me)
I'm so grateful I can hit this high E like she does. Too bad I'm too old to audition for Mabel.
@keckm88 Just confirmed by playing along on a keyboard - it is scored for Db, but she cheekily reaches up to Eb on two occasions (1:28 - 1:30 and 3:29 - 3:33).
1:28 is actually Db, but impressive nevertheless
I went to opening night of this play last night. My brother is Major General. The girl who played Mabel was INCREDIBLE. She easy hit every note in this song.
is that a freaking tape playing most of the orchestral part? oh man, you musical theater people are so weird..
rexeterna some places don’t have access to a full orchestra. It happens.
I was so fortunate to see this at the theatre, many years ago. She was absolutely outstanding. And the orchestra was real.
Wait. Drums? "Shoop-shoop?" Well, now I wanna see this version! Also, those cadenzas?! Girl looked at her watch and said, "Y'all didn't have anywhere to be, right?"
can i take her voice box from my computer?
@bmrhea92 I had a friend who sang this role. I asked her how on earth she did the staccato. She showed me by twitching her diaphragm like crazy. I could see it going up and down under her shirt!

This is my favorite "You Tube" version of this song. She is awesome!
its an aussie version, very funny, fantastic , i`m sure G and S would have approved!
I love this so much. Such a fantastic scene. Not only because she is a fabulous singer, but because she gets to do basically what he had done just previously to her sisters - be like "Look at me and my fabulousness while you stand there and watch me and wait". Take that, Fred :D.

I still think it's a fantastic performance.
The score has a D-flat as the highest, but I'm pretty sure that last note is an E-flat she threw in because she's awesome haha.
While the voice is amazing.., what truly sets this performance APART.., is how she assumes the coquettish quality of the character.
Every move thorougly hits the mark.
And.., it's LIVE.., on STAGE.., absolutley nothing "STUDIO" about it.
I aspire to sing like Helen Donaldson. HOLY GEEZ she is so talented!
she's so amazing!!! i played Mabel in a theatre camp, and it was absolutely amazing!! i hope that someday, i can be as amazing as Helen!!
A wonderful production..so many wonderful memories!
Nobody comes anywhere near Valerie Masterson singing this.
Check her out on UA-cam
You are right. Donaldson sings this part better than Masterson (as good as Masterson was, and I usually hold her up as my favorite G&S soprano). I think I probably prefer Masterson for the Mikado, though.
Helen Donaldson, the voice of an angel
Poor wand'ring one!
Though thou hast surely strayed
Take heart of grace
Thy steps retrace
Poor wand'ring one!
Poor wand'ring one!
If such poor love as mine
Can help thee find
True peace of mind
Why, take it, it is thine!
brava, both cute
Didnt she ever sing lyric opera? Shes wonderful.
Wow! She's special.
She's fantastic! and a lovely actress too. I don't care for the modern orchestrations but the performances are wonderful.
Singing this for my grade 8. This definitely has inspired me and I aspire to be as good as this😂 (doubt I will be)
Oh, Leonard Bernstein ought to hear this, it's got vibes from I Feel Pretty and Glitter and Be Gay
Great. Its funny and she has a beautiful voice. I actually didn't mind the doo-wop chorus girls on this particular song. I hated them in the Mikado though; the songs were practically unrecognizable.
Her and Crawford. I would take a duet with them over about any other two on earth. Absolutely incredible voice
Poor Simon! I am as in awe as he. She is perfection.
I had no IDEA that Chris Farley played one of Mabel's sisters!
I'm playing this for one of my friends. She has an AMAZING voice! :D
wow..i agree for the most part on the orchestrations...but her voice...oh my god! unbelievable!! what a gift she has!
That was incredible. It will remain a regret that i didn't get to see that in person. Wow. Love it.
Well I thought the entire show was brilliant but eh what the hell do I know?
Thank you! I finally actually understand the piece. I haven't seen anyone else portray the actual point of the song - thank you for being the first person I've seen to actually tell the story.
LOL at Frederic's bag at 1:27 That was wonderful!
I just found out my high school is gonig to be donig this next year, and lately I have really been trying ot improve my soprano singing voice, and this now is just completel motivation!
divina de campo brought me here
Amazing voice! I played Mabel in a school production many years ago. This brings back so many memories. I wish I could still hit those high notes.....but her soprano is outstanding!
what a stupid song i cant believe i gotta sing dat in da sckool play!!!!!!!!!!aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!
Magical voice, how lucky we are to hear her sing. Awesome.
Daaaaamn... How on EARTH do you hit that last note? That was waaaaaaaaaay too high.
Wow ! .....and Wow ! again.
Dogs came running!
I don't like what they did with this play. They made it weird AND the cops are too weird!!!!
Goal =set. I will sing like this someday.
Captivating
Oh, my God. I think an angel dropped from heaven, dressed up in Mabel's costume, and sang this. But they made it very funny, too!
I think her voice was strained and damaged by this role.
Where....on Mars? That 14 year old Hannah here on UA-cam is much better!
its a really horrible song from a really horrible operetta
The best I have heard!
she warbles like a bird, but her high notes are exquistely beautiful!
AH. I got this part. I'm going to need to work REEAALLY hard..
Helen Donaldson is WONDERFUL!!!!
BRAVA!! Amazing performance (though way too many liberties with the tempo). Outstanding vocalization of this fine aria!!!!! BRAVA!!!!
I was told that a jaw wobble is wrong, the vibrato should come from the diaphragm not mouth shape. I love her high notes though
her vibratto is a little off-pitch...
That was beautiful. E flat just right on.
1:45
this song is absolutley adorable
+tigrrr12 This is, in my personal experience., among the greatest ever songs written. Such amazing music to back some the loveliest lyrics to come from the marriage of Pen and Paper. Her voice is is so clean and rich and that solo was just Epic.

This was absolutely amazing. I wish I sounded like this.
Flawless.
By far of all the voices singing this song on UA-cam. She is my favorite to listen to :)
Excellent performance! Really classy!
I love this performance.

Bernard McMahon thanks 😊
Holy moley! What a voice!

my favorite part is when he drops the bag.
feivel the mouse ;,)
Yes, a winning Mabel in this production, but a winning Frederic also. Simon Gallaher has a pleasing stage presence, good mobility and an unusually clear, unforced voice (Oh, is there not one maiden breast) . . .
😂
Haha..We're not weird! lol It's a synthesizer, I think.
wow she has a gorgeous voice! :)
This is such a great interpretation and that voice is amazing, I love it!!
Obsessed with this whole performance.
Yes, well. I'd be upset if someone did this to some really serious opera, but you have to remember that Gilbert and Sullivan were really just trying to be silly. It was a different audience, but this is by no means entirely-serious music.

She is very good! I am learning this song!
yes, she is exquisite in every way, and Frederic is good too in spite of being really skinny.. But the sisters.....I dunno...they're kinda weird you must admit!
❤❤ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!RIP Jon English😢
Lovely rich voice. Magnificent!
re you kidding me she is soo superb its not even funny, she doesn't slide at all no 14 year old girls voice can be that great
