  • Gilbert and Sullivan's raucous operatic tale is captured in all its fun and glory in this production, recorded live at Central Park's Delacorte Theater. Kevin Kline sparkles as the swashbuckling and libidinous Pirate King while Linda Ronstadt makes her theatrical debut as the lovely and virginal Mabel. When Mabel and Frederic, a young pirate bound to serve the Pirate King, fall in love, complications arise and high spirited antics ensue. The incomparable cast offers the best in this boisterous romp.
Despite some of the technical shortcomings of the DVD I found it more rewarding than the 1983 movie. I would thoroughly recommend adding a copy of this DVD to your library.

she is phenomenal. for an untrained pop singer to be able to get her voice to do all of that is pretty much unparalleled. the contestants on pop star to opera star did a good job, but none had the stamina to sing their pieces as written. Linda does. simply astonishing

@@sweeney60hey man! Yeah, I'm a massive life long fan.. I know everything about her. She is not a trained operatic singer. Thats very different. And the family was not classical musicians. They were traditional musicians. Her brother was a soprano, yes, and that was her inspiration for her sound. But my original point holds
      Much love!

@@sweeney60 Yes. She took vocal lessons in the early 80's because she wanted to do this and record an album of standards with Nelson Riddle. I feel she really found her voice on the heart like a wheel album, and then got even better in the 80's due to both this and the nelson riddle album. If you listen to her live performance of 'don't know much' in 1990 I think her tone was better then than it was in 1975. She's really one of a kind.

I think had Linda Ronstadt begun training early enough she could have been a brilliant opera singer. She was already past 30 by the time she started working on this. Even so, she does a quite good job here, especially considering she spent most of her career as a country/rock singer. Her voice and power are phenomenal.

If she sang this performance without training, it shows her promise. That promise was fulfilled after she had training and coaching before the movie was filmed. In the film, her voice is stronger and her high notes more secure. That's what training does. But she has the native talent - listen to the natural coloratura here. I used to love singing this when I was a teenager. What fun!

I saw this in Central Park, a perfect show for a beautiful summer evening! And among the fantastically talented cast -- Linda Ronstadt, Rex Smith, Kevin Kline, George Rose and Tony Azito -- the standout was the great Patricia Routledge as Ruth: a master class in how to project comedy to a huge outdoor amphitheater. Also, though she had sung G & S "straight" for the BBC (Iolanthe and Mad Margaret), the way she adjusted her vocal style for this version was so savvy. Glad there are clips of her and this show around.

ock singers of the time to get a larger and more diverse audience interested. They took liberties, used a pop singer with a lovely and not opera trained voice. I bet there are singers who performed as Mabel who were technically trained for it who did it in the correct key or whatever people are complaining about. It wasn't Lina Ronstadt who chose to move the key. It was the musical director's choice. She also is really a lyrics soprano that they made sound like a coloratura for this part which is very hard to do. As a classically trained singer myself (14+ years Bel Canto) who can sing both versions of the song, I prefer this one better because it shows off the entire voice rather than just one part. I also think it's makes it more fun to sing but that's my personal opinion.

I believe they did a number of shows in Central Park to get a feel if there was enough interest in it to move to the Uris Theater.

A 14 year old has no business singing this role. Most 14 year old girls have too much air in their sound...and the very few freaks of nature who don't.....don't have the life experience to bring the role to life. Most 14 year olds should be studying the 24 Italian art songs, if that.

why did they drop the octave 4th a step? why do mabel's sisters sound and look so awful?

barkingtree88 Frederick was in search of one who’s homely face and bad complexion have caused all hope to disappear of ever winning man’s affection. In the end he ends up with the most beautiful woman of her era.

Meh, she will be a better singer and will be more successful then you will ever be. Just remember that.

Yes...I think Lady GaGa would do quite well as Mabel! Born and raised in New York City, she studied music at the Convent of the Sacred Heart and briefly attended New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.

Sarah Brightman is no angel. She should be incarcerated for trying to impersonate a bona fide opera singer. The only thing I like by her is the Pie Jesu from the original recording of Lloyd Weber's "Requiem".

Linda sings alright but the passage in the middle of this song is not as good as it should be.Instead of being clear with each note she slide through the notes and this lets her down.
