I was heartbroken when her character died in the second Downton Abbey movie and now, I am REALLY heartbroken. It is like a gigantic oak tree you loved is suddenly removed from a familiar landscape.

Penelope Wilton is an amazing actress - so understated and affable, yet so much generosity and emotion in her performances. And she seems a wonderful person in real life too, from interviews but more importantly, what others say about her… She and Maggie Smith played off each other beautifully…

Such a sad day when we heard of her passing. It sometimes seems that we are in a time when the greats of the theatre tradition in the United Kingdom are being taken from us too quickly, those whose career started on the stage and who never expected to become international film or television stars. Dame Edith Evans, Sir Laurence Olivier, Sir John Gielgud, Sir Ralph Richardson were all of a slightly older generation. Recently we have lost Sir Michael Gambon, the wonderful Tom Wilkinson and Alan Rickman of the gorgeously expressive dark voice. Dame Judi Dench, Dame Helen Mirren, Dame Julie Andrews, Dame Penelope Wilton, Dame Patricia Routledge, Vanessa Redgrave, Sir Ian McKellen (whom I saw play Richard II and Edward II at the Edinburgh Festival in my far off youth), Sir Anthony Hopkins, Sir Derek Jacobi, Tom Courtenay amongst others are all in or very close to their 80s - in one case in their 90s. Will future generations ever have an opportunity of seeing a similar galaxy of talent on the British stages?

“Downton Abbey” fans who haven’t seen its precursor film, “Gosford Park,” also written by Julian Fellowes, and directed by Robert Altman, must do so. A send-up of British murder mysteries set in the 1930s, Smith’s performance as Constance, Countess of Trentham (get it: Trentham -> Grantham?) was Oscar-nominated, and is well known to have evolved into Lady Violet. As usual, Dame Maggie steals every scene she’s in, although the whole star-studded film is delightful. The costume designer deservedly won an Oscar. One of my all-time favorites, I curl up and indulge myself in a viewing about once a year.

“Desmonia”? That’s Desdemona, the female lead in Shakespeare’s Othello. Smith’s film performance of that role in the 1960s resulted in an Academy Award nomination, and the film holds the record for the most nominations for a movie version of a Shakespeare play. I can only imagine what Dame Maggie would say about that mispronunciation of one of Shakespeare’s most well-known female characters.
