    For anyone doing this job in the future, I recommend loosening the egr pipe from the intake side of the engine. You will easily be able to slide the exhaust manifold off the head without having to crank on the egr pipe. Great video Tim.

    Love the channel.
    Friendly tip there is a 12 mm bolt that connects the EGR pipe to the engine block, that runs between the firewall and the engine block. If you follow the pipe down with your hands you will feel a bracket. That should give you a little more wiggle room if you loosen that bolt. If you need even more room, then after you loosen that 12 mm bolt, You can loosen the bolts on the other side of the EGR pipe.

    Just completed this project using your part #s and only ended up with two extra parts since I went without the heat shield I had two bolts for it. Also had a copper flat washer ? Other than that this upgrade worked for my 3rz in a 1995 toyota t100. Feels a little peppy now and quieter thx once again guys.

      You're welcome Tim. Glad our video helped you get the job done. I can't remember a copper flat washer as part of this job, but my memory sucks, so who knows if it was needed or not. The only copper flat washer that I can remember using on these rigs is for the front differential drain bolt.

Welding on a new exhaust pipe flange because there is nothing left of the old one to bolt the new manifold too.

    Hey Tim, How are you brother? I noticed that you don't have too many videos on the 3rd gen 4runner exhaust system. So, I'll ask this question since your videos are the ones that get me through these repairs. I have a 99 4runner 3.4 w/federal emissions. Years ago, I replaced the cat back on my own no problem, but now I need to replace the cat and o2 sensor since the studs on o2 are rusting to nothing. I have no codes yet, but figured I swap out these parts while it's still warm in the midwest.
    I noticed that there is one broken stud out of the three in exhaust flange where manifold connects to catalytic. I have the type where there are two gaskets in flange. Im probably getting a leak there from the broken stud with no nut. The other two nuts are there and then there is the bracket bolt that is rusty too, is this 14mm like the stud nuts?
    My questions... How does one access the stud/nut under frame section? It seems there is no room to get a wrench or socket in there.
    Which direction do the studs turn from underneath the vehicle? Do the studs and nuts turn in the same direction righty tight lefty loose? I want to make sure that I'm turning in the correct direction to remove.
    Im going to try and heat these up to get off once I receive my E8 and E10 socket, hopefully this helps. Any tips and tricks are greatly appreciated. Im super sore from being under there yesterday with no luck. Thank you very much Tim! You're the best!

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  Рік тому +1

      Yes, those nuts are 14mm.
      The exhaust studs turn into the exhaust flange clockwise to tighten and counter clockwise to loosen. The one near the passenger frame is harder to deal with if it breaks because you can't get a straight shot at drilling it out so you can retap it.
      Those studs can be really hard to get out. Even with heat and penetrant, you will most likely break some of them. You might want to remove the exhaust manifold if you have to drill any of them out.
      Maybe you have a good muffler shop near you that could help you out. They can weld on new O2 sensor bungs for you.

      @Raevenswood 7 років тому +1

      Huh I hadn't heard that was an issue. I did hear guys like the TRD headers, was that what you guys were trying to install? I'm in Vallejo not all that far from your guys really so these restrictions also apply to me.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  7 років тому +1

      Well, I'll have to ask Sean for sure but I remember him saying he did get the wrong headers. California spec 4runners come with 2 catalytic converters and when we looked at the passenger side header, there' wasn't a way to attach both catalytic converters so we abandoned the project. We were thinking of installing the headers while we had Sean's transmission out of the way which would make it easier to get that exhaust cross pipe out that goes between the engine and transmission.

      From my research of the first gen tacoma, which I think is very close to the same as a 3rd gen 4Runner front half, it doesn't seem easy AT ALL. seems like most people have to spend an entire day trying to cut the manifold out in order to then take another day putting the headers in, and on top of that 2002 models need to be welded also, apparently.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  7 років тому +1

      The 1st Gen Tacomas and 3rd Gen 4runners are exactly the same. And yes, I've heard it's a pain in butt. With it being a hard install, I just don't know if it's worth it.

    Time to replace my 02 3rz header. Was going to swap with a brand new OEM from Toyota but aftermarket headers caught my attention. It’s rare to find a direct fit Doug Thorley header, but if I did, is it worth it? I’ve read it can add a some extra low-mid power but I’m curious if it’ll cause issues with the fuel/air ratio?

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  2 роки тому

      are you referring to the y-pipe that joins the headers to a single pipe which in turn bolts to the first CAT?... there seems to be different Y-pipes that would be plug n play but because those headers are long discontinued I'm not sure if you'd be able to find that piece anymore. I would not get an aftermarket CAT if you could help it. It may require a shop to cut & weld the old stock flange on the new TRD headers so it is an easy bolt up situation.

      We've only removed exhaust manifolds from the 5VZ-FE engine with it out and on a stand. If you're looking for a video to install headers, that's a video we'll probably never make. To get the crossover section in, either the engine or transmission would have to come out or at least partially out. It's quite a bit of work for negligible benefit. We do have videos showing how to remove the engine and the transmission, so if you were looking to install headers, you could consult those.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  2 роки тому +1

      @@Amraam23 Yeah, you could do it yourself, but like I said, the crossover section that joins the two sides behind the engine will be impossible to get out unless you remove the transmission out of the way, or lift the engine away from the transmission. It depends how much a shop will charge you compared to you buying the tools necessary to do it on your own. An engine hoist is needed to lift an engine out and a transmission jack is ideal for removing a transmission.
      If I were going to do this job, and I had a 2wd 4runner, I'd remove the transmission. If I had a 4wd 4runner, I'd pull the engine. The 4wd with the transfer case makes it more work to pull the transmission. If you try to drop the transmission and transfer case as one unit, it's a very heavy and awkward assembly to deal with. I would pull the transfer case off the transmission first, but that's more time.

    So I have a 96 4 runner 3rz engine . I have been looking for carb legal headers and none are aplicable for my year , so I was gonna do the Doug thorley headers for a 2001-04 Tacoma/4Runner , after talking to them (Doug thorley support) they informed me to talk to smog ref (I live in California) to make sure they would give me the ok for the headers . So I talked to the state ref and said that no they would not work so I asked if I could install the factory steel header offered for the 200-04 Tacoma/4Runner they said nope because it wasn’t made for my vehicle even though as u see in the video everything is a direct bolt on . I know that it’s at our own risk to do any mod , but dang really California !! There is no deference in the headers !!!

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  4 роки тому +1

      Nestor, California is a total joke when it comes to smog laws. Why do they care what exhaust you have on your vehicle? Why would they even care if you did an engine swap. If the vehicle passes the test of what's coming out the tail pipe, that's all that should matter. I've heard of people failing a "visual" inspection because the smog tech found a cracked vacuum hose. It's pretty freaking ridiculous. If the goal is to help keep our air cleaner, why do they care about this trivial stuff? The regulations in California are always going to be ridiculous and you can put the blame on the political party that has controlled this state for far too long.

    Timmy The Toolman, do you happen to know the part number for the heat shield just above the catalytic converter? the one that is attached to the under body of the truck, you can see it right above the cat at 49:31. A mechanic who replaced the catalytic converter on my truck got rid of it and just like any other part, it happens to be very functional. Thanks in advance.

      @TimmyTheToolman  6 років тому

      royaloreca Sorry but I don't know the part number for that. I'd look at online Toyota part seller's for their parts schematics and see if you can find it. If you come.up empty, try contacting Amanda at Camelback Toyota online parts sales. Amanda is usually very helpful and maybe she'll be able to hook you up. Their prices on parts are very competitive too. If that doesn't work, you might have to resort to visiting your local Toyota dealership and pay a little more for the part. But, you could also visit a local wrecking yard or PickNPull and see if you can find that heat shield on a salvaged 3rd Gen 4runner. Good luck!

      It's much much much harder on the 5VZ-FE. There's two manifolds to deal with and then the crossover pipe is next to impossible to get out unless you disconnect the transmission. I think people who do it without disconnecting the trans end up cutting the crossover pipe out because that's the only way they can get it out.

    Hey Timmy so basically I was watching this to put in two new exhaust gaskets where the manifold and the flange connect. I found that I have an exhaust leak there. I was able to get all three bolts off, only 2/3 studs. One of the studs the etorx was stripped. Any recommendations on how I can proceed

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  4 роки тому

      I would first try to cut new threads with a die from a tap and die set. You have to first figure out what size and thread pitch it is and then get a die on there and start cutting new threads. This will most likely work if there's enough metal left on the stud. If it doesn't work, you can try to remove the stud from the exhaust flange but this will probably prove to be very difficult because they get really welded into the flange. You could treat it with some penetrant, then maybe use a butane torch to heat the flange around the stud and then get onto it with an e-torx socket and try to remove it. Your local Toyota dealer should be able to get you another stud. If that doesn't work and maybe the stud brakes off, then you left with drilling it out as carefully as you can, retapping the threads on the flange and installing an new stud. I hope this helped you out and let me know how it goes with fixing this problem.

    Motor oil on exhaust studs is a big no no. Only use high temp thread locking compound, which actually does make removal easier even though it's chemically locking the stud and the head together, or a high quality anti seize. Great video otherwise. Keep them coming.

    What I'd like to know is...why the hell has the price of this OEM exhaust manifold gotten so expensive? It's absurd that any company is charging nearly $250 for a part that only cost $187 a couple years ago. There is nothing special about this part. I've paid less for a performance header for a 6 cylinder engine. I think the OEM headers for the 6-cylinder Tacoma are cheaper than this part cost now. Someone is definitely price gouging their customers.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  4 роки тому

      Yeah, it's weird how the prices can fluctuate so much. Don't know if it's truly price gouging or not. If you want to see something even more ridiculous, go on Craigslist and see what people are asking for old land cruisers now. The FJ40s and FJ60s are ridiculously high. I had a 68 Bronco in high school and thought it would be cool to own one again. You can't touch a decent one for under 20k. Whoever is paying anything close to these asking prices has got to be nuts.

      @@TimmyTheToolman You want to know what it is really? It's something that the general public is struggling to understand...the disparity between the wealthy and middle class is getting too big. There are just enough people who have too much money (or kids that spend their parents money- either from allowances or living with their parents until they're in their 30's skirting responsibilities) that companies know they can charge ridiculous prices and someone will pay it. Instead of making money from selling quantity they want to make more money selling less. The laws of supply and demand are getting twisted.

      Well Dude, we gear our videos to the absolute beginner because we want the broadest audience to be successful following our tutorials. Things that you might think are very basic to know might not be apparent to a person just starting to turn wrenches. We all start somewhere. Try to remember when you first started turning wrenches and how little you knew. Sean and I believe auto mechanics is something anyone can learn if they truly want to. People regularly tell us how they appreciate the detail our videos offer and let us know that our videos empowered them to do a job they wouldn't have tried to tackle because they thought it was beyond their capability.
      So, you're entitled to your opinion but we're going to keep making videos how we like. The beauty of these videos is nobody is holding a gun to your head to watch the whole thing. You can fast forward to the parts you want to see and skip the rest. There have been experienced mechanics who have told us they appreciate the level of detail and information we provide in our videos. We realize our videos aren't for everyone and that's ok.
