- This is a guide on how to navigate the map. It covers some of the many techniques people already use, plus some totally unique ones I made up to help people out. This can also be used to help players find their friends around Chernarus by providing you with an easy way to identify your location and where you need to head.

I always tried using the sun to determine which way I was heading but always felt like I was heading slightly diagonal when trying to reach a destination. You confirming the sun is in the Southern Hemisphere was such helpful news and I can put my theory to rest. Thank you!

I feel you, I started dayz about a year ago and quit after dying on the coast a bunch of times. Tried it again after going through the wiki, and now the coast is just a fun place to fish and hang out for me. 🤙
Most of these videos didn’t exist when I started playing. Needless to say, I had a tough time. That and you starved within 30 minutes on coast back then
2 min in, and this is already the most useful video on navigation I've seen 🔥👌

You can also use the wind! I’ve found in Cherno looking at the trees that the wind always blows juuuuust a little left (south) of southwest.

navigation tips-
Navigate by clouds, stars, shadow, sun, moon, electrical lines, hiking paths, compass.
You can navigate by using your very own shadow, shadow of tree or building.
Keep the coast, moon or sun at your back. Do this by noting where the sun or moon is at in the sky when you look back over your shoulder by using your quick look keys. Then just check it every 5 minutes to make sure you are lined up to where you want to go.(I keep the moon just over my left shoulder when I look back)
You can follow power lines even on the darkest night because they will be the only things you can see in the dark sometimes.
The moon also has moon rise and moonset just like the sun. When you see the moon getting lower on the horizon or sinking, daylight is just an hour away.

One of the things that helped me navigate back in arma 2 was city signs. I have learned russian so I knew exactly where I was. I love to watch people who don't know kirillitsa trying to understand where they're at lol.

IZurvive is really helpful you can make groups and mark locations instantly for everyone
Starting from Berezino, I just follow the main road south until I reach Elektro (I read the road signs) take a right turn once you reach the military camp in the town and keep driving north until you hit
Stary/Novy sobor, turn left, drive straight through a village with a farm on the right, pass the last house of that village and take the right turn, then another right turn, you've made it to the Military Airbase.

Once I learned the road/track tip, I tried to think of a memory aid. Hope this helps y'all.
"Road before track, East to your back. Track before Road, Norths the way to go" So first is your on west so head east. And latter is south so head north. Thanks for the tips. I just started DayZ on PS4 and I've watched your videos to learn basics ! Thanks !

Not sure if it's a big help, but if you place a compass in your hotkey menu and enter a car with the compass in your hand, you can driver normally but now you'll have the compass in the menu showing north.

Can definitely say that the Compass being in your hotkey menu gives so VERY mixed results, I'm not took keen on relying on it. It will actively move as you turn, but you'll find more often than not, when you take it out, the needle fully seems to correct itself.
Yeah, you need to keep it in your hand. One of the updates fixed it and then broke it again. But keeping it in your hand and hotkeying it means it'll show North and you dont have to keep checking it
I only found a gun twice in two different games and the first time it was in a kiosk to the right of the plane in cherno
Soon as you know where you are you can orientate yourself with a land mark and run in a straight line to the next town/ city this is the fastest way to travel on foot.

I started playing about a week ago and I seem to always end up back where I started, I got as geared up as one can along the coast. I left Berinzino and did a giant circle and landed right back where I started it's kinda crazy. Yeah tried the sun thing once but I didn't know if the sun was rising or setting and I still did a big circle before I figured it out. Tried the compass thing in the hotbar it didn't work out very well. When I put the compass there the needls flips from where it was in 1st person so if it shows you travelling south I think your actually travelling north at least that's what it did for me.
I just started too around the same time on PS4, and I do the same thing leave a city or town and end right back up there 😂
Great videos for DayZ. I noticed for Livonia, that power/phone lines don't always lead to towns. Half the time I follow them, they will suddenly just end with no towns nearby. Thanks for this video. I have subscribed.
Livonia should change a bit this year based on what they were saying, soon as it does I'll probably do more content focused on there too =]

I would have loved some help too. I think one of the biggest contributors to my death back then, besides illness, was just straight up wandering aimlessly for miles trying to find a scrap of loot only to end up back on the coast haha

I read on the steam forums you can use the MAP with GPS turned on together to determine your position but in haven't figure it out yet.
Yeah, that was out after this video in patch 1.19. You read it like a grid map, to the GPS tells you the coordinates of where you are. So if you have a working GPS and a map, open the map and look in the bottom left. It should say Grid Sector. Y and X have numbers after them. You then take those numbers and look at the map to work out your position using the grid system =]
Idk if this will help but on iZurvive I have markers on the 6 towns & some markers passed them north to get a general idea
After about 4 hours of studying the cyrillic alphabet on Duolingo im finally able to read the map and roadsigns, now i can actually play😂

3:35 When you break your leg just get up and walk until you go uncon, then you can go to the menu to respawn. Took me a long time to figure that one out, lol.
Or just apply a splint and walk it off

I'm dyslexic and have over learning disabilities is there any videos on the pronunciation of the town names???, when I'm playing with friends and they asked me where I am I have to keep sending screenshots of the road signs and now it's just annoying playing with me
No unfortunately, tbh it's mostly memory. Unless you can speak Russian the signs are pretty useless, but overtime we've sort of Englified it, so the names I use here are what we'd normally use in the English speaking world =]

90% of the time yes. But some of them have custom spawns

To learn on, yes. Official can be a lot of fun and a great way to get comfortable. But I recommend eventually going to community =]

I couldn't find a military base even with a pristine compass, a GPS device with battery, and a map. I suck.

Hard when it's not in front of me, but when you prepare to fight (left trigger I think) just walk backwards and it should auto block for you =]

I’ve got a Russian translation book which I made that has all the important cities and towns in DayZ fully translated with the entire Russian alphabet, it was so easy to figure it out early game

I do have a guide that explains the best way to get food if you're struggling. It appears in the top right corner of this one a few seconds in.
As for finding chickens specifically. They're commonly found on the outskirts of most coastal towns. If you're in a town you're almost certainly not too far from one. Alternatively, fishing might help. But knowing what buildings to loot and what ones to avoid is soooo important when starting off, it's why I did that guide, it has a whole section on the best places to loot =]

Here’s another tip lid, when you need to commit suicide (like in your vid) but you only successfully break a leg.. just stand up, walk.. once you go Unconscious, press start and you get the option to Respawn. Instead of crawling back to where you jumped from again 🤣😁

stars moves west
sun set west
midday moving towards sun is south
moveing away form sun is north
when your spawn in dayz your always facing north
the big dipper is north look for a group of stars that leads to two stars very close, thats the north star
if you spawn on the east coast head west towards inland
if you spawn on the south coast always head north
if you see a railroad track before a road then your on south coast by electro & kamenka
if you see a road before railroad track your on the east coast by electro & berezino
if spawn on the south coast head to electro and cherno on the tracks before heading north
main goal is to find a large city
white signs with a red marks means you are leaving the city
white signs tells you that your entering the city
blue signs tells you the next town or city is and the direction is
learn the citys
svetlo
berezino
solnichniy
Elektro
& cherno
to remember the order of the city is stop being so easily cold
if spawn in the east coast go to berezino top right of that town find two military tents or head south of berezino find a hospital

Honestly it doesnt help that much. Just remember the shapes of the first 3-5 letters that make up something's name. Its not like learning to speak another language, its just learning to speak a few new words.
@@tmoney1487 Considering I do speak Russian amongst other languages I don't have to play "match that character" game. And added bonus is understanding all the labels and billboards around the town too.
