A battle-scarred Confederate veteran of the American Civil War, Ethan Edwards (John Wayne) arrives home to the remote and dusty Texan homestead of his brother, Aaron. Hoping to settle down in peace, instead, the former soldier will set out on a treacherous odyssey of rescue and retribution, when the ruthless Chief Scar's (Henry Brandon) murderous Comanche raiding party massacres his family, burns the ranch to the ground, and abducts his nine-year-old niece, Debbie (Natalie Wood). Driven by hatred of Indians, Ethan and his young companion, Martin Pawley (Jeffrey Hunter) ride through the Utah desert to track down their lost Debbie; however, is the woman they lost and the prisoner in Scar's tribe still the same woman the searchers seek?

Whenever there's an old western I automatically think of John Wayne.

    Hi Steven,
A classic indeed, “The Searchers” is so beautifully shot by John Ford that amazingly was from the 1950’s, that I forget that.
He totally makes full use of many widescreen shots showing many of the landscapes in the background which many other great directors then would duplicate this formula making a movie look more epic.
John Wayne never looked better & at his peak, one of the great westerns for sure 😎👍

Totally agree mate! It's a stand-off between this and Liberty Valance for as to which is my favourite Ford Western... the technicolor scenery in this really is stunning though! Also, this is a contender for top Wayne performance for me. Thanks for checking out the video buddy, take care.

Hi Steven, this is an excellent movie, Wayne at his peak and Ford doing what he does best. Whenever I see Monument Valley I think of Ford and Natalie Wood gave a great performance for someone so young, it must have been intimidating surrounded by such an established crew. Nice one mate, take care👍😃👍

Hello mate! Yes this is a top tier entry in the Western genre for sure... in fact many John Ford Westerns are! Wood had been a pretty prolific child actor and a bit of a handful, so she probably held her own pretty well... haha. Thanks as always for watching buddy, hope you're having a great week.

There is a lot of misconception about John Wayne, especially among younger viewers and I put that down to his personal politics (which were abhorrent by today's standards) but those need to be separated from his acting. Sure, he had a fairly limited range as an actor (and watching his rather sad attempts at doing "modern" police dramas in the 70's confirms this) but within that range he was solid. This is one of his better performances and this remains one of his best films.

I am not sure if I’ve seen this. If I have it was on a black and white tv in the mid seventies. Does the line “don’t call me uncle “ feature in this. If so sadly that’s my only memory. I’ll seek it out. Thanks as always

It certainly does! If you’ve only ever seen it in black and white then you’re in for a real treat! 👏🎥

Thank you for a good review! Sometimes people in this current woke and PC era cannot set aside their inaccurate belief system to actually try and walk in the characters' boots, mostly because they simply have never studied the history of the times to comprehend there were few people on either side who were truly admirable. But if someone actually grew, then they are to be admired. I love this film but it is impossible to understand until viewed multiple times. There is just too much depth the be fully comprehended in a single viewing. It really stands the test of time when you consider it was made in the mid-1950s and dealt with almost taboo subject matter for that era. Sex between the races is still a hotly contested issue for many people, regardless of colour.
