@Frank Lopez wasn't making an argument, simply commenting on my admiration for Kirk and his son, Michael. If Wayne was racist that's bad on him, just not what I'm focused on. Chill out.

@@technodroog Yes he did. He said he got along with Wayne during work hours, which were long in duration. How is that not "getting along"? That's the definition of getting along. The definition of getting along is not friends who socialize and really enjoy spending time with each other. He also said they got along well enough to have dinner once or twice. It's never a smart idea to go into detail about what you think of someone else's political views. I'm sure Wayne didn't go into detail about his views on Douglas' Hollywood liberal philosophies. In like manner the whites were better fighters and won. Better he said to be angry at the wind for blowing your house down. This stuck with me as well as something my grandfather said - if you think you can trust the government - ask an Indian.
Dick Cavett was a glorious interviewer. As good as you'll ever find in the media. Past or present. His narration was tremendous as well. I particularly enjoyed his Time Was series. Reviewing the significant moments of each decade of the 20th century. Beautifully handled by Kirk Douglas and Cavett. Douglas showed his respect for Wayne, while still highlighting his negative side. Negative is the understatement of the decade. His views on Native Americans were just the tip of a giant Glacier of cold prejudices. More zero than hero. A grotesque billboard of the ignorance of his times.
You can tell Kirk doesn't like John Wayne when he was asked that question but the fact that he didn't slag or ridicule him and gave the guy props just shows how much class this guy has

dawg these types of comments are stupid. 1) you're implying that people who decline to work together due to differences are somehow inferior. 2) Wayne's comments were legitimately tone deaf, as he was being boastful about Europeans taking land they lived nowhere near by force from tribes who'd already cultivated & laid claim to it. 3) Kirk wasn't affected by Wayne's insensitive remarks about Natives; the Natives were. spouting such negativity about the rightful previous owners of this land is harmful to them in many ways, but Kirk could afford not to disagree publicly with Wayne's comments bc they didn't directly affect him. & in case anyone's going to reply to me saying I'm on a high horse, I'm definitely not. Being a multimillionaire and holding a different political opinion than your other multimillionaire friend is a lot different that two people with actual, personal skin in the game being on opposing ends of the spectrum.
@Rishi Eastwood If two people both have platinum health insurance coverage and they're arguing over whether or not health care should be a right in the US, that's one thing. But now imagine a person whose spouse has cancer, and who can't afford treatment, being confronted by someone who is adamant about the fact that health care is not a right. It's an entirely different animal.
@Rishi Eastwood even within the Libertarian community, there is a spectrum of ideological difference. Not every Libertarian kisses the ring of Ayn Rand.

People with opposing views respecting each other and remaining civil, how refreshing.
Wayne in that interview was anything but civil or respectful. He referred to gays as "f@gs", excused generations of brutal oppression faced by Native Americans, called for the continued oppression of African Americans while promoting White supremacy.
