  • The Texas Revolution explodes in this classic movie review of 1960's The Alamo, starring John Wayne, Richard Widmark, Frankie Avalon and Laurence Harvey. Directed and produced by John Wayne this is a retelling of the pivitol battle in 1836, when a small band of soldiers sacrificed their lives against a massive Mexican army in order to prevent a tyrant from destroying the new Republic of Texas.

In 1836, General Santa Anna and the Mexican Army is sweeping across Texas. To be able to stop him, General Sam Houston (Richard Boone) needs time to get his main force into shape. To buy that time he orders Colonel William Travis (Laurence Harvey) to defend a small mission on the Mexicans' route at all costs. Travis' small troop is swelled by groups accompanying Jim Bowie (Richard Widmark) and Davy Crockett (John Wayne), but as the situation becomes ever more desperate Travis makes it clear there will be no shame if they leave while they can... Everything leads to an explosive last stand...

No recoil of the opening scene of cannons firing.

I think I need to have a John Wayne movie day at some point. There are all these films that I've heard of but have never seen before.

Great breakdown. I love this film for a lot of the same reasons you do. Bloated and messy in places as it is, it's still an impressive effort that I find rewatchable, for the cast, scale and Tiomkin's score. The 2003 film is definitely worth a watch. It's a little over earnest, and more languid in its pacing but you get more of the Sam Huston story and a well staged epilogue featuring the the Battle of San Jacinto. Billy Bob Thornton is terrific as Crocket and has some nice quieter moments.

That's interesting... I do know that there was a 1937 movie named Heroes of the Alamo and also Davy Crockett : King of the Wild Frontier from 1955. Maybe there was others that I'm not aware of. I can imagine this would be fantastic projected on the big screen! Thank you so much for taking the time to watch as always. I'm very grateful. Take care.

This is a movie I don’t have in my collection, if I had seen it, it would have been in the 70’s as my dad was both a John Wayne and a western genre fan, I like how John managed to squeeze in some personal political messages 😁 a fine cast, I will have to track down an import somewhere, thanks mate, exceptional as always, take care👍😃👍

Thanks for watching buddy! yeah I think this overdue a nice Blu-ray release ( I think there is a French one) I have a pretty old MGM DVD (and a VHS) copy of it. For me, his falls under the category of classic Sunday afternoon viewing 😆 those long movies that seemed to be on afternoon when I was a kid. Have a great week mate. 📽👏

    Hi Steven,
Great work on your reviews as always, this John Wayne war western movie has always been one of my least watched westerns for the main reason we still don"t have a UK or American release of it on blu ray which i"ve waited for, but there is the odd import release out there with many so enchanced bootlegs out there of the movie that at some point i"m going to bite the bullet & grab a copy to revisit this movie again.
Love the grand epic feel to it which is about as much as i can remember, in some cases some of our favourite or well known actors might not be the best people to direct a immense & big movie such as this, its one of the factors that could of been prevented.
John Ford would of been the ideal director for a picture like this in my opinion, (Obviously) fine review 👍

Thanks as always buddy. Yes, this is crying out for a nice 4K restoration, as my DVD copy is not the best... I agree, Ford would have been the ideal choice, but it still remains a good old fashioned western/war epic. Fingers crossed for that 4K disc... 👏📽

Good movie but I actually feel it was let down by Wayne,
John Wayne plays John Wayne in everything
I feel the part he played actually called for a actor like Monty Clift or Brando,
Wayne's characters are all the same be it Genghis khan. Or rooster cogburn it's just Wayne playing Wayne
    Good review

I do know what you mean with Wayne... yeah Clift would have been a great fit! Thanks so much for checking out the video, have a great week. 👏📽
