My dad had to perform this procedure 2 times, I felt sorry for him, it was not easy. After he got a liver transplant, but he didn’t make it! RIP dad, you were such a warrior.
Had no idea I had this condition until I couldn't breath one day at work. My work mates put me in an ambulance and made me go to the hospital. Over the next three days they drained almost 40 liters of fluid off my body. I suffered with this condition almost two years where in my body was eating all my muscle mass. I was put on the transplant list for a liver. I was lucky to get a liver and it took almost 6 months to get back to the point where I could go back to work. I was so weak that I would have to pull my self up the stairs. It was not fun. I went through about 20 paracentesis procedures before my transplant at the end it was every week with at least 16 liters each time. I am three years post op for the transplant and 65 years old and survived covid without hospitalization. I'm one of the lucky ones.
Mine was caused by toxic water from Camp Lejeune North Carolina, Camp Pendleton California and Camp Schwab on Okinawa Marine corps Bases. As well as all the chemical solvents I was exposed to in the navy.
I was on a liver transplant list for over 3 years before it happened. I was drained 2 times a week taking any where from 10 to 14 liters of fluid. I wore suspenders to keep my pants/skirts from dropping on drainage day. Started at women's size 18/20 and ended up at a 14 after draining. Transplant was done on 12/24/25/ 2019. My Christmas miracle.
I had this done twice. I had liver failure due to a really rare disease. After a month of trying to get me better,I was finally put on transplant list on a Fri and on Sunday I got the call I was a backup, by midnight I got the call again that I was the primary and to be at hospital in 30 minutes. That was back in 2022. Doing better then ever now.
I can sooo relate to this video. 22 years ago, a simple gall bladder removal resulted in the dr cutting my hepatic duct, without realizing it. Went home that day. About two weeks later I looked like the gentleman in your video. I couldn’t walk, I was in so much pain. They drained 14 liters from my abdomen. I was so sick…I was in icu for 3 months because they didn’t know how to fix me. There was only 1mm of hepatic duct left to work with. Well, six doctors from 3 separate hospitals came up with a plan, Thank God, because I am here today!
That’s insane! I had my gallbladder removed and it was the easiest surgery I’ve experienced! Can’t believe the doctor did that to you! So glad you are ok today!
It actually feels like you're drowning. I just had a liver transplant and I had to undergo this procedure once a week for about a year until my new liver came. It is absolute hell

I gained 80 pounds of water weight when I was in acute liver failure! Random virus attacked my old liver, I was put at the top of the list due to how sick I was. 2 days of being on the list I received my new liver! Greatfull to be here today! ❤ prayers for this man and his body!

I had this procedure done many times before my heart transplant 10 years ago. The most I had extracted was 12.3 liters and lost nearly 25 pounds. I had to have it done every 3-4 weeks. Now I’m doing well.
My son had so much pulled off of him it would of filled a swimming pool. He had 50lbs pulled in one day. He has a new liver transplant now praised God. My son was born with a bad liver.
I took my dog to the vet last month, and he's 100lbs so I didnt notice that his stomach was bloated, was calling him fatty, now I feel horrible. I found out that he had this problem and even through the drained the fluid they said I had to put him to sleep. I feel horrible I didn't know something was wrong. He was up all night panting, so I stayed up with him and took him to the vet in the morning. I never imagine they would have told me that. He was only 5. He was panting due to the fluid pushing on his diaphragm. I miss him so bad, I am devastated. Prayers to this man. I can't imagine what he is dealing with on a daily basis.
I am very sorry about your loss, I too had to put my little Heidi down a couple of months ago do to cancer from bad teeth and I really miss her everyday , stay strong and it gets easier to deal with the loss over time!

I realized my dog was bloated and she wasn't eating and I told my sister and we had to beg my dad to carry her because in her eyes if she died she died, and the doctor was like if we brought her a day later she would have died
6 1/2 yrs ago I got diagnosed with cirrhosis in icu an had this procedure done. I can proudly say healthy happy and still sober today🙏🏼 water , water , water an a healthy diet thank ya Jesus for another day!! 💪🏼🤙🏼🙏🏼
Yep I have to pack in the drinking ... can feel a tiny amount of ascites in the right flank. Booze was fun but also miserable. Choosing a normal life over a rapid horrid death is far preferable.
It’s weird that this popped up in my recommended videos. I kept ignoring it but finally gave him and watched it. I lost my mom November 20, 2020 due to non alcoholic liver cirrhosis. I’m here to beg everyone please get wellness exams and try your best to avoid this if possible! My mom for as long as I could remember always have elevated liver function on her labs. They constantly told her to lose weight and pretty much but the cirrhosis into “remission”. 30 years of that it turned to stage 4 quickly. She was diagnosed with stage 4 July 5, 2019. She was tired of fighting the fatigue, fluid, itching, etc. she also missed my dad who had died 5 years prior. We were SOOOO close to a transplant but she took a bad turn over night and didn’t make it..So, please. Everyone stay healthy!!!! Love to all.

It is horrible. I had a liter and a half taken from my belly. After that I had to take a water pill and after that it was almost 24 hours of constantly needing to go to the bath room. I cannot imagine that amount of fluid
I've had 13 pulled one time now it's 3-5 weekly. I can't even imagine. When I was at my worst I could barely breath and forget eating. Once they pull enough you feel instant relief. I have a love/hate relationship with para days.

They did this with my dad when he had colon cancer. He had five liters. He passed away about three weeks after the procedure was done. Grateful for those in the medical field!

I’ve had loved ones, one with nonalcoholic cirrhosis and the other with alcoholic cirrhosis. Either is awful, and both died. In their memory, bless this doctor for being compassionate and gentle.
@Barry Allen I don't think they were saying this particular person died. Many do not survive living with cirrhosis. There are a lot of complications that happen from a dying liver. My mother passed from kidney failure due to nonalcoholic cirrhosis. Doctors didn't know why she had it.
I have to say "thank to" to this man also for allowing this to be filmed. As a patient in various situations, but especially because I was a R.N., I am always quick to say "yes" whenever my Providers have a student with them& ask if they can watch or assist. To be given a chance to learn on a "live" body is critical to caring for real patients. Even just the opportunity to converse with patients in the Health Care setting helps build the skills needed for a lifetime career.
I was filmed and watched viral by students all around for their education. I was glad to be a help. Even tho all i did was given permission to them to do it. They , the hospitals transplant team did everything. I just laid back and had to deal with some major pain for a couple of days. But now thank God my brother is doing great with his new/ my kidney. 😎👍🏻👏🏻🇺🇸

Being in the medical field and working with patients like this truly is a wonderful thing. I have had to work with many patients with ascites and it is not easy to live it. Anytime we can make a patients suffering a little bit less is a good day and the reason we wake up everyday!

My dad did this twice a week before his liver transplant. Then maybe once after (for emergency). Dad got almost 3 more years. Thank you for showing this procedure, so I could see what he went through
Hi E O my dad had to go through this every two weeks also. He made it to his liver transplant evaluation and didn't pass three tests. He lived longer than what the doctor said 7 hard fought months. He passed away on March 7, 2021 and I miss him so much. I was by his side during his medical journey and sure was difficult at times. My grief is hitting me and I'm trying to focus on positive things. Viewing this video made me shed some tears but in the end he is no longer suffering.

This video reminds me of my late dad 😢 He had kidney failure and had to do Hemodialysis for 5 years. His stomach was a bit big because of those fluid but didn't need this procedure as per doctor said because he was quite discipline to not to drink too much water each day. But sadly he passed away on July 2021. He has been through a lot in past 5 years. May my dad Rest in Peace, I love you dad ❤
Really? I didn't see it that way. To me, he seemed more focused on filming a training video than on the human being on the table. He barely interacted with the patient and did almost nothing to put the guy at ease. He also didn't regularly check in or ask if he was doing ok or if there was any pain.
@@nickb- there is another person in the room thats checking on the pt, it is not painful as he gave anesthesia prior to poking the needle to remove the fluid.
Thank you to this patient for allowing himself to be filmed in treatment for others to learn. My stepdad is dying of liver cancer, and this helped me understand the treatments that will make his life more comfortable as he nears his transition.
that doctor that did the procedure is so cool and confident, rattling off what he's gonna do what to expect etc. He is basically making the patient calm and relaxed knowing that he's fully competent to do the procedure. kudos to the doctor. good stuff. great video.
I can't believe how much his gut shrunk during the time lapse. I can't imagine the pain and discomfort that poor individual was going through with so much excess fluid. Props for him for allowing the procedure to be filmed, and I'm so glad he's likely far more comfortable
He will have had to do this regularly, and is now either dead or presuming liver failure was behind this, having had a succesful liver transplant, alive.
The pain of fluid build up is super intense. It's the worst when it squeezes your lungs and heart, but mine is caused by heart failure not by liver damage. If I end up with twenty lbs of fluids I can't even lay down cause I will suffocate to death. It's shitty. This guy has much more buildup then I have had but it builds up in a different way then mine does. Fluid floods into my muscles and into any sacs that surround important organs and create lots of stress and pressure. It doesn't pool in my stomach like that at all.
My husband went thru this for 2 years and in Oct 23 got a liver transplant and is a whole new man. He is at 7 months and his color is so much better and he isn't as tired and feels 95 percent better. Prayers for all transplant patients out there and those on the list.
I had a similar volume removed, and you notice the difference most when it comes to wearing a belt on your trousers rather than braces/suspenders. Sadly there is no cure for cirrhosis, the only recovery being after replacement/transplant, so this patient will need to get used to being drained regularly until a donor is found!
I'm so happy you put out these videos, especially letting people know this can be non-alcoholic related. My mom has pretty severe and it's nothing to do with drinking either. I remember when she was first diagnosed and someone researched it they came to work telling everyone it was because she was an alcoholic. So it's really important people don't spread misinformation like that because she almost lost her job because of the type of job. I truly hope this man is able to get a new liver if he qualifies so he's able to get better.

The doctor has a soothing voice. Patients really need it. I am a patient of a gastroenterologist, and as the doctor in this video, my gastro also has a soothing voice. his voice always able to calm me down on every ERCPs that we do.
Due to the pandemic, I had to do the vast majority of my nursing school education 100% online. This is my first time actually seeing a paracentesis (after getting so many question on it wrong) and this really does help me put things together. I really appreciate all of the educational material that is free for us nursing and medical students. Thank you all so much.

I've seen nurses take a oxycodone prescribed to a post surgical patient and Give the patient a Tylenol...I've seen them give wrong meds to patient in a whole different room with whole different diagnosis...I've seen nurses let a female patient with a Foley go 2 days with no urine passing and not report to doctor or anyone about the retention good lord I vould go on and on...don't get me started on the feeding meals part oh they offer the food so it's on the record that the patient ordered food and then forge the papers say he or she ate 75 percent of the meal when they didn't eat none of it and are losing weight drastically from malnutrition due to no one getting them to actually eat its insanity...nursing homes are the worse.... hospital are horrible that why I work at a wound clinic now I can actually get to treat patient and see them improve instead of go down hill any elderly inpatient is 10x worse leaving hospital then they went in and admin and Dr's say that's the way it is lol what a mess

I am a 79 year old man and I had this procedure done in a public hospital here in Launceston, Tasmania 3 days ago when they drained just under 6 litres of fluid. Pathology tests confirmed cancer cells from the pancreas and my long term outlook doesn't look that great 😢. Dedicated clinical staff will do what they can, but in the end you just have to believe in a higher power to pull you through. God bless you all out there 🙏🙏
My Dad went through this exact same thing when he had liver cancer. Sadly, he didn't make it but I will forever remember the doctors and nurses who kept him comfortable during his last hours. Love you Dad.

As a Sonographer, I’ve been involved in hundreds of paracentesis. Unfortunately ascites is not just cirrhosis but can include patients with liver cancer (primary and metastasis) and patients with ovarian cancer. My most memorable patient was a lady a few years ago with ovarian cancer who was with our department nurses weekly for paracentesis. As we neared Christmas, she asked if she could sing some carols to the department. As we all gathered around with tears streaming down on our faces, she sang bravely and beautifully. She was gone before the New Year. 😢

Ascites usually indicate a grave danger to a patient’s life. This is so personal to me as my father had similar buildup of fluid in the abdomen before being diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer which had spread to the peritoneum. He left us for the heavens just 2 months after the diagnosis. There is not a single day which goes by that I don’t miss him. He was just 56. RIP Papa! It is not fair to anyone to loose their father at such an early age😢
My grandma too experienced this due to stomach cancer and it's sad that Kenyan doctors neglected her and she succumbed.There is no single day during her last two months that I didn't cry on her behalf she couldn't even eat😢
My Dad also had to be drained multiple times and then all of a sudden the problem stopped. A few years later it started up again. It was unpleasant for him. In fact his last hospitalization was due to ascites but heart failure killed him My condolences to all who have lost a loved one through liver failure or another illness.
@Ck Infinity There are many causes of liver failure besides alcoholism. My dad got Hep C from a blood transfusion in the 80s after getting into a motorcycle accident - which eventually caused his death.
I'm so sorry 😞 I was blessed to get treatment for my hep c, although mine was self inflicted through drug use, I have 7.5y clean and sober now and I don't take anything for granted anymore 💜
My mom died the day this was filmed, she had NASH and she lived a terrible life after she starting swelling and everything and having to get drained, R.I.P. Mom I am so glad you are with Jesus and out of pain. but i miss you so so much. love you Mom

My Mom had this done every 9 to 12 days for 15 years. It was very painful for her. The hospital told her she was the longest standing patient to have this procedure ever in that hospital.
I’m a nurse (RN) and I can attest to the fact that there is NOTHING like the smell of ascites fluid! When you smell it - you know immediately what it is! Thank you for these very informative videos!
This man is such a great doctor. He has a fantastic bedside manner and takes the time to talk to his patients, educate them on their diagnoses, and explains the course of treatment while making sure they’re not in too much pain.
My poor dad had liver failure and had this done monthly. He looked 9 months pregnant. Sadly he did pass but so glad he's not in pain any longer. Prayers go this man.....

I had that procedure done 26 times before my liver transplant. It is such a relief to get the pressure off for a while. The most I ever had was 9 liters. I thought that was a lot until I saw this.

I had this done 2 x a week for weeks before getting my new liver. You are very close to death at this point. You labor to breath, and I had fluid all over, my feet and legs weeped there was so much. I had horriable muscular cramps I cried, in the hospital days before surgery, I was that sick. I was hospitalized 2 weeks before surgery. I'm sure he had much relief, I recall I pooped what looked like spaghetti noodles, and my bladder actually hurt an only held very small amounts that would empty. I pray this man got his liver....no one can imagine what a liver disease puts you thru. It's not just getting a transplant. I was in the hospital more than home in the 2 years before getting my liver transplant. God bless you sir.
I'm doing very well. Must watch my kidneys now, was injured during the long surgery, but I'm stronger, able to live as much a normal life, with some inconvenience but few.. thank you for asking.
What a brave guy this patient is. His medical condition is concerning without having to undergo this very uncomfortable procedure. I hope this patient manages to get whatever treatment he needs in order to be able to enjoy life to the full. I would be interested to know how long it took to remove the fluid?
Can take anywhere from 4-24+ hours. Depends on how quickly it runs out. I work on a gastro ward in Sweden with these types of drains daily. Most we've ever drained under my time is 47-50 liters over the course of 48 hours.
I know, 19 gallons, and then I seen a bigger one there, so it most to have been almost 20 gallons, imagine how much weigh the poor men was carrying around? I just hope he gets better soon, may God bless him with health and many blessings

My dad is going threw this, but he hasn’t had that much fluid, only about up to 5 ml. He has primary biliary cirrhosis of the liver also non-alcoholic.. he just got done with all of his testing that he had to do before being putting on the list for a transplant, and all the testing was all good, so we’re just waiting to hear from the doctors to see what the next step is, which we think is him being put on the liver transplant list.

My father had 25 litres removed last year ...And right he have 15-20 litres again , he had gone leg surgery last month ,. His bone was broken due to excessive weight
@@Cloudancer2024 Yeah he doesn’t have the Ascites, but he does have a standing order to go get drained, and sometimes it’s 2 times a month and sometimes it’s every month or 2 to 3 months, and the doctors told him to watch his salt intake and he’s been doing that and hasn’t been filling up like he was..And he gets a full feeling and pressure when the fluid builds up..And now he’s getting liver spots on his arms instead of the fluid..And Thank you 😊...

My heart hurts for him. What a relief it must have been for him to get all that fluid out. Prayers go out to him and for his family. It's not easy for them to see their loved one uncomfortable like that.
My 3 year old son had something similar done except in the ICU after his body reacted to a chemo medication and caused liver failure. The draining of fluid was constant and crucial because it was compressing his organs including his kidneys and lungs. We didn’t realize how delicate the balance was of the human body until things went incredibly wrong.
I hope your son is doing ok now. I can't imagine how depressing life is when dealing with a severely sick child. My heart goes out to you and your family during these hard times.

Ive had to do this for ascites in chickens but never seen it done for a person. I use the same tube but no suction. We have a great vet who taught me how. Thanks for sharing!
I had a 20 year old patient with severe ascites & in liver failure, d/t being an alcoholic since the age of 11, he said. You never know what happens to your patients once they are discharged, but I sure do pray for them. I feel for this young man in the video & his mother.
My father passed away from alcoholic cirrhosis last year. He battled with the condition for a whole decade. Despite getting a liver transplant, he didn't make it, as his body was too weak to endure the stress of the surgery. In his last 8-10 months, he had this procedure done numerous times where they would drain 10/12 litres of fluid each time. Hope this patient is doing well. Appreciate him doing this video!
Have HCC with non alcoholic cirrhosis. I have met many people unable to have transplants ( age, location of tumor- mines on portal vein, non surgically removable. No resectioning. The ascites also go to bloodstream affecting brain activity. I get edema from toes up & have to drain.

When I was a nurse I refused to let a Dr. treat me disrespectfully. Even as a Nursing Student we had a great team of Instructors who instilled pride in us & taught us we were equals in respect in a Health Care Team. Of course too, this was just as the Viet Nam Conflict was ending & men (ex- Medics) were entering Nursing. They were used being treated as peers, so they weren't going to put up with any crap from an "on a pedestal" doctor.
My dad is an RN and I would go with him to take your child to work day and I saw him do this. I remember it so vividly. It was about 20 years ago and I was amazed
My dad was an alcoholic for most of his life, and he had this for a while before he died. He hated going to the doctor, so they were able to set him up to do the drainage with assistance at home. He never did end up getting on the transplant list, because when the doctors asked if he would quit drinking after a transplant, he said no. He passed in the spring of 2014 after his body just couldn't handle the degradation anymore. To those of you out there who have this or know someone who has this: please fight to get better. Don't end up like my dad.
My father is currently hospitalized with alcohol induced cirrhosis with ascites. They pulled 4L off of him today. I do not think he would be a transplant candidate either. How often and long did your dad have to get drained before he passed?
Ugh. That brings back some bad memories. I suffered from some pretty bad ascites after I took 3 bullets through the midsection overseas. The bullets entered through my right side, broke apart, and tore through my liver, my spleen, my gall bladder, and my stomach. I lost half my liver, my entire gall bladder, my spleen, 1/3 of my stomach, and 6 inches of my small intestine. Most fluid they pulled in a single time was about 9 liters, and I spent a total of 3.5 years and 17 surgeries to fix the damage (that doesn't include the amount of time I spent in rehab, or the amount of time that I spent after they amputated my left leg (below the knee amputation... I'm still trying to get lined up for an osseointrgration surgery so I can get a permanent implant, but because it's below the knee, it's not very likely). Shit was incredibly painful, and at one point I looked like I was pregnant or something. I did come out of it with some pretty awesome scars though, so there's that 🤷♂️

He will have to go through this again. Cirrhosis is irreversible and it takes about a week for the water to accumulate. Transplantation is his only hope
@@trainingxtrish cirrhosis is just scar tissue in the liver which can be caused by alot of things. As the doctor mentioned alcoholism is a common one but not for this patient. I suffer from auto immune hepatitis causing my immune system to attack my liver. I'm just hoping I never have to go through something like this or even worse get a transplant.

My son suffered from the same thing for a couple of years, unfortunately after a while his liver failed and he was very ill and passed away, it’s a terrible thing to suffer from, he was in so much pain towards the end…💔

Had no idea I had this condition until I couldn't breath one day at work. My work mates put me in an ambulance and made me go to the hospital. Over the next three days they drained almost 40 liters of fluid off my body. I suffered with this condition almost two years where in my body was eating all my muscle mass. I was put on the transplant list for a liver. I was lucky to get a liver and it took almost 6 months to get back to the point where I could go back to work. I was so weak that I would have to pull my self up the stairs. It was not fun. I went through about 20 paracentesis procedures before my transplant at the end it was every week with at least 16 liters each time. I am three years post op for the transplant and 65 years old and survived covid without hospitalization. I'm one of the lucky ones.
Mine was caused by toxic water from Camp Lejeune North Carolina, Camp Pendleton California and Camp Schwab on Okinawa Marine corps Bases. As well as all the chemical solvents I was exposed to in the navy.

I was on a liver transplant list for over 3 years before it happened. I was drained 2 times a week taking any where from 10 to 14 liters of fluid. I wore suspenders to keep my pants/skirts from dropping on drainage day. Started at women's size 18/20 and ended up at a 14 after draining. Transplant was done on 12/24/25/ 2019. My Christmas miracle.

I had this done twice. I had liver failure due to a really rare disease. After a month of trying to get me better,I was finally put on transplant list on a Fri and on Sunday I got the call I was a backup, by midnight I got the call again that I was the primary and to be at hospital in 30 minutes. That was back in 2022. Doing better then ever now.
I can sooo relate to this video. 22 years ago, a simple gall bladder removal resulted in the dr cutting my hepatic duct, without realizing it. Went home that day. About two weeks later I looked like the gentleman in your video. I couldn’t walk, I was in so much pain. They drained 14 liters from my abdomen. I was so sick…I was in icu for 3 months because they didn’t know how to fix me. There was only 1mm of hepatic duct left to work with. Well, six doctors from 3 separate hospitals came up with a plan, Thank God, because I am here today!

I gained 80 pounds of water weight when I was in acute liver failure! Random virus attacked my old liver, I was put at the top of the list due to how sick I was. 2 days of being on the list I received my new liver! Greatfull to be here today! ❤ prayers for this man and his body!

I had this procedure done many times before my heart transplant 10 years ago. The most I had extracted was 12.3 liters and lost nearly 25 pounds. I had to have it done every 3-4 weeks. Now I’m doing well.

My son had so much pulled off of him it would of filled a swimming pool. He had 50lbs pulled in one day. He has a new liver transplant now praised God. My son was born with a bad liver.

I took my dog to the vet last month, and he's 100lbs so I didnt notice that his stomach was bloated, was calling him fatty, now I feel horrible. I found out that he had this problem and even through the drained the fluid they said I had to put him to sleep. I feel horrible I didn't know something was wrong. He was up all night panting, so I stayed up with him and took him to the vet in the morning. I never imagine they would have told me that. He was only 5. He was panting due to the fluid pushing on his diaphragm. I miss him so bad, I am devastated. Prayers to this man. I can't imagine what he is dealing with on a daily basis.
I am very sorry about your loss, I too had to put my little Heidi down a couple of months ago do to cancer from bad teeth and I really miss her everyday , stay strong and it gets easier to deal with the loss over time!

I realized my dog was bloated and she wasn't eating and I told my sister and we had to beg my dad to carry her because in her eyes if she died she died, and the doctor was like if we brought her a day later she would have died

Yep I have to pack in the drinking ... can feel a tiny amount of ascites in the right flank. Booze was fun but also miserable. Choosing a normal life over a rapid horrid death is far preferable.

It’s weird that this popped up in my recommended videos. I kept ignoring it but finally gave him and watched it. I lost my mom November 20, 2020 due to non alcoholic liver cirrhosis. I’m here to beg everyone please get wellness exams and try your best to avoid this if possible! My mom for as long as I could remember always have elevated liver function on her labs. They constantly told her to lose weight and pretty much but the cirrhosis into “remission”. 30 years of that it turned to stage 4 quickly. She was diagnosed with stage 4 July 5, 2019. She was tired of fighting the fatigue, fluid, itching, etc. she also missed my dad who had died 5 years prior. We were SOOOO close to a transplant but she took a bad turn over night and didn’t make it..So, please. Everyone stay healthy!!!! Love to all.

I can’t imagine how much relief he felt from this, so much pressure.
It is horrible. I had a liter and a half taken from my belly. After that I had to take a water pill and after that it was almost 24 hours of constantly needing to go to the bath room. I cannot imagine that amount of fluid

I've had 13 pulled one time now it's 3-5 weekly. I can't even imagine. When I was at my worst I could barely breath and forget eating. Once they pull enough you feel instant relief. I have a love/hate relationship with para days.

I’ve had loved ones, one with nonalcoholic cirrhosis and the other with alcoholic cirrhosis. Either is awful, and both died. In their memory, bless this doctor for being compassionate and gentle.
@Barry Allen I don't think they were saying this particular person died. Many do not survive living with cirrhosis. There are a lot of complications that happen from a dying liver. My mother passed from kidney failure due to nonalcoholic cirrhosis. Doctors didn't know why she had it.
I have to say "thank to" to this man also for allowing this to be filmed. As a patient in various situations, but especially because I was a R.N., I am always quick to say "yes" whenever my Providers have a student with them& ask if they can watch or assist. To be given a chance to learn on a "live" body is critical to caring for real patients. Even just the opportunity to converse with patients in the Health Care setting helps build the skills needed for a lifetime career.
I was filmed and watched viral by students all around for their education. I was glad to be a help. Even tho all i did was given permission to them to do it. They , the hospitals transplant team did everything. I just laid back and had to deal with some major pain for a couple of days. But now thank God my brother is doing great with his new/ my kidney. 😎👍🏻👏🏻🇺🇸

Being in the medical field and working with patients like this truly is a wonderful thing. I have had to work with many patients with ascites and it is not easy to live it. Anytime we can make a patients suffering a little bit less is a good day and the reason we wake up everyday!

( I'm guessing that person means people who have used drugs......) basically saying why care for them and help there pain if they brought it onto themselves. That's sad and just that comment makes you worse then any addict or recovering addict I've every met. We all make mistakes in our short lives and ultimately we have too face judgement from God someday or w.e a person's higher power is! Hi E O my dad had to go through this every two weeks also. He made it to his liver transplant evaluation and didn't pass three tests. He lived longer than what the doctor said 7 hard fought months. He passed away on March 7, 2021 and I miss him so much. I was by his side during his medical journey and sure was difficult at times. My grief is hitting me and I'm trying to focus on positive things. Viewing this video made me shed some tears but in the end he is no longer suffering.

This video reminds me of my late dad 😢 He had kidney failure and had to do Hemodialysis for 5 years. His stomach was a bit big because of those fluid but didn't need this procedure as per doctor said because he was quite discipline to not to drink too much water each day. But sadly he passed away on July 2021. He has been through a lot in past 5 years. May my dad Rest in Peace, I love you dad ❤

Really? I didn't see it that way. To me, he seemed more focused on filming a training video than on the human being on the table. He barely interacted with the patient and did almost nothing to put the guy at ease. He also didn't regularly check in or ask if he was doing ok or if there was any pain.

My stepdad is dying of liver cancer, and this helped me understand the treatments that will make his life more comfortable as he nears his transition.

The pain of fluid build up is super intense. It's the worst when it squeezes your lungs and heart, but mine is caused by heart failure not by liver damage. If I end up with twenty lbs of fluids I can't even lay down cause I will suffocate to death. It's shitty. This guy has much more buildup then I have had but it builds up in a different way then mine does. Fluid floods into my muscles and into any sacs that surround important organs and create lots of stress and pressure. It doesn't pool in my stomach like that at all.
My husband went thru this for 2 years and in Oct 23 got a liver transplant and is a whole new man. He is at 7 months and his color is so much better and he isn't as tired and feels 95 percent better. Prayers for all transplant patients out there and those on the list.

I had a similar volume removed, and you notice the difference most when it comes to wearing a belt on your trousers rather than braces/suspenders. Sadly there is no cure for cirrhosis, the only recovery being after replacement/transplant, so this patient will need to get used to being drained regularly until a donor is found!

I'm so happy you put out these videos, especially letting people know this can be non-alcoholic related. My mom has pretty severe and it's nothing to do with drinking either. I remember when she was first diagnosed and someone researched it they came to work telling everyone it was because she was an alcoholic. So it's really important people don't spread misinformation like that because she almost lost her job because of the type of job. I truly hope this man is able to get a new liver if he qualifies so he's able to get better.

My husband had a similar condition develop. We called it the alien baby! We are so thankful for doctors who have the knowledge and skill to treat such conditions.

I am a 79 year old man and I had this procedure done in a public hospital here in Launceston, Tasmania 3 days ago when they drained just under 6 litres of fluid. Pathology tests confirmed cancer cells from the pancreas and my long term outlook doesn't look that great 😢. Dedicated clinical staff will do what they can, but in the end you just have to believe in a higher power to pull you through. God bless you all out there 🙏🙏

As a Sonographer, I’ve been involved in hundreds of paracentesis. Unfortunately ascites is not just cirrhosis but can include patients with liver cancer (primary and metastasis) and patients with ovarian cancer. My most memorable patient was a lady a few years ago with ovarian cancer who was with our department nurses weekly for paracentesis. As we neared Christmas, she asked if she could sing some carols to the department. As we all gathered around with tears streaming down on our faces, she sang bravely and beautifully. She was gone before the New Year. 😢

Ascites usually indicate a grave danger to a patient’s life. This is so personal to me as my father had similar buildup of fluid in the abdomen before being diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer which had spread to the peritoneum. He left us for the heavens just 2 months after the diagnosis. There is not a single day which goes by that I don’t miss him. He was just 56. RIP Papa! It is not fair to anyone to loose their father at such an early age😢

My Dad also had to be drained multiple times and then all of a sudden the problem stopped. A few years later it started up again. It was unpleasant for him. In fact his last hospitalization was due to ascites but heart failure killed him My condolences to all who have lost a loved one through liver failure or another illness.

@Ck Infinity There are many causes of liver failure besides alcoholism. My dad got Hep C from a blood transfusion in the 80s after getting into a motorcycle accident - which eventually caused his death.
I'm so sorry 😞 I was blessed to get treatment for my hep c, although mine was self inflicted through drug use, I have 7.5y clean and sober now and I don't take anything for granted anymore 💜

This man is such a great doctor. He has a fantastic bedside manner and takes the time to talk to his patients, educate them on their diagnoses, and explains the course of treatment while making sure they’re not in too much pain.
My poor dad had liver failure and had this done monthly. He looked 9 months pregnant. Sadly he did pass but so glad he's not in pain any longer. Prayers go this man.....

I had that procedure done 26 times before my liver transplant. It is such a relief to get the pressure off for a while. The most I ever had was 9 liters. I thought that was a lot until I saw this.

I had this done 2 x a week for weeks before getting my new liver. You are very close to death at this point. You labor to breath, and I had fluid all over, my feet and legs weeped there was so much. I had horriable muscular cramps I cried, in the hospital days before surgery, I was that sick. I was hospitalized 2 weeks before surgery. I'm sure he had much relief, I recall I pooped what looked like spaghetti noodles, and my bladder actually hurt an only held very small amounts that would empty. I pray this man got his liver....no one can imagine what a liver disease puts you thru. It's not just getting a transplant. I was in the hospital more than home in the 2 years before getting my liver transplant. God bless you sir.

What a brave guy this patient is. His medical condition is concerning without having to undergo this very uncomfortable procedure. I hope this patient manages to get whatever treatment he needs in order to be able to enjoy life to the full. I would be interested to know how long it took to remove the fluid?
Can take anywhere from 4-24+ hours. Depends on how quickly it runs out. I work on a gastro ward in Sweden with these types of drains daily. Most we've ever drained under my time is 47-50 liters over the course of 48 hours.
I know, 19 gallons, and then I seen a bigger one there, so it most to have been almost 20 gallons, imagine how much weigh the poor men was carrying around? I just hope he gets better soon, may God bless him with health and many blessings

My dad is going threw this, but he hasn’t had that much fluid, only about up to 5 ml. He has primary biliary cirrhosis of the liver also non-alcoholic.. he just got done with all of his testing that he had to do before being putting on the list for a transplant, and all the testing was all good, so we’re just waiting to hear from the doctors to see what the next step is, which we think is him being put on the liver transplant list.

My father had 25 litres removed last year ...And right he have 15-20 litres again , he had gone leg surgery last month ,. His bone was broken due to excessive weight
@@Cloudancer2024 Yeah he doesn’t have the Ascites, but he does have a standing order to go get drained, and sometimes it’s 2 times a month and sometimes it’s every month or 2 to 3 months, and the doctors told him to watch his salt intake and he’s been doing that and hasn’t been filling up like he was..And he gets a full feeling and pressure when the fluid builds up..And now he’s getting liver spots on his arms instead of the fluid..And Thank you 😊...

As a laboratory technician who then gets the fluid to run lab tests, I have never actually seen the procedure done before. This was quite interesting.

My 3 year old son had something similar done except in the ICU after his body reacted to a chemo medication and caused liver failure. The draining of fluid was constant and crucial because it was compressing his organs including his kidneys and lungs. We didn’t realize how delicate the balance was of the human body until things went incredibly wrong.
I hope your son is doing ok now. I can't imagine how depressing life is when dealing with a severely sick child. My heart goes out to you and your family during these hard times.

Ive had to do this for ascites in chickens but never seen it done for a person. I use the same tube but no suction. We have a great vet who taught me how. Thanks for sharing!

I had a 20 year old patient with severe ascites & in liver failure, d/t being an alcoholic since the age of 11, he said. You never know what happens to your patients once they are discharged, but I sure do pray for them. I feel for this young man in the video & his mother.

My father passed away from alcoholic cirrhosis last year. He battled with the condition for a whole decade. Despite getting a liver transplant, he didn't make it, as his body was too weak to endure the stress of the surgery. In his last 8-10 months, he had this procedure done numerous times where they would drain 10/12 litres of fluid each time. Hope this patient is doing well. Appreciate him doing this video!
Have HCC with non alcoholic cirrhosis. I have met many people unable to have transplants ( age, location of tumor- mines on portal vein, non surgically removable. No resectioning. The ascites also go to bloodstream affecting brain activity. I get edema from toes up & have to drain.

When I was a nurse I refused to let a Dr. treat me disrespectfully. Even as a Nursing Student we had a great team of Instructors who instilled pride in us & taught us we were equals in respect in a Health Care Team. Of course too, this was just as the Viet Nam Conflict was ending & men (ex- Medics) were entering Nursing. They were used being treated as peers, so they weren't going to put up with any crap from an "on a pedestal" doctor.

My dad was an alcoholic for most of his life, and he had this for a while before he died. He hated going to the doctor, so they were able to set him up to do the drainage with assistance at home. He never did end up getting on the transplant list, because when the doctors asked if he would quit drinking after a transplant, he said no. He passed in the spring of 2014 after his body just couldn't handle the degradation anymore.
To those of you out there who have this or know someone who has this: please fight to get better. Don't end up like my dad.

Ugh. That brings back some bad memories. I suffered from some pretty bad ascites after I took 3 bullets through the midsection overseas. The bullets entered through my right side, broke apart, and tore through my liver, my spleen, my gall bladder, and my stomach. I lost half my liver, my entire gall bladder, my spleen, 1/3 of my stomach, and 6 inches of my small intestine. Most fluid they pulled in a single time was about 9 liters, and I spent a total of 3.5 years and 17 surgeries to fix the damage (that doesn't include the amount of time I spent in rehab, or the amount of time that I spent after they amputated my left leg (below the knee amputation... I'm still trying to get lined up for an osseointrgration surgery so I can get a permanent implant, but because it's below the knee, it's not very likely).
Shit was incredibly painful, and at one point I looked like I was pregnant or something. I did come out of it with some pretty awesome scars though, so there's that 🤷♂️

I suffer from auto immune hepatitis causing my immune system to attack my liver. I'm just hoping I never have to go through something like this or even worse get a transplant.

The relief a patient feels during, and after, this procedure is amazing. This was an excellent presentation, and should hopefully make for a good, and secure, example for future patients.

My son suffered from the same thing for a couple of years, unfortunately after a while his liver failed and he was very ill and passed away, it’s a terrible thing to suffer from, he was in so much pain towards the end…💔
God bless this brave patient and the healthcare workers who treat their patients with dignity and care. Where would we be without them and to live in a great country that has pretty good healthcare.
Seeing these medical conditions reassures us all that the most important thing in life is not money, material th8ngs, but our health. God bless this man.
