    Thanks for keeping us informed. Quite a spectacle. And most unfortunate for the people that live nearby and those that make their living in the affected area.

    Kudos to the science-side spokespersons for not "losing it" due to the idiotic questions coming from the press.

      I didn't think the questions were idiotic. The press are not specialists in Hawaiian volcanoes and they are mostly going to be interested in actual or possible effects on people and businesses, not chemistry or geology.

    Thanks for keeping the world informed of what is going on. Although I'm in New Zealand, we're also a nation with active volcanos on the _ring of fire_ (oo-err.., sounds a bit rude) and so I find this fascinating. My heart goes out to those that have lost their homes, something I also experienced after a series of earthquakes starting in 2010, so understand your pain, all the questions and trying to make sense of what the hell is happening. Great footage, good information and thanks again for the updates.

    Logically the surge of lava into the newly formed underwater tubes would seem to possibly burst the pipe and in theory cause the explosions. Meaning more lava would be forced into the Submarine lava tube created by the cool water forming a lava crust tube and then the extra volume hits it and pop and then boom. U I bet ifyou look back at the times of the explosions, you can match that up with the high flow periods.
    Your welcome. LBA

    Not a good answer on the possibility of explosive event in this call. The document on the USGS website that talks about the geology and history of Kilaeua (volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/geo_hist_summary.html ) mentions that when the lava level at Kilauea reservoir falls below the level of the water table (which is estimated to be about 600m below the caldera rim), a major explosive event becomes likely: "Having pieced together the recent geologic past of Kīlauea, scientists conclude that the volcano will eventually return to a long period of mostly explosive activity, just as it did around 1500 CE. This future explosive period will probably accompany a significant decrease in the magma supply rate and be initiated by collapse of a new caldera to the depth of the water table, which today is about 615 m (2015 ft) below the present high point on the caldera rim."

    Some of these questions seem so lame!
    Why doesn't anyone ask interesting questions such as is there an estimate of the difference between the magma lost from Halema'uma'u. its underlying magma reservoir and Pu'u O'O and the lava erupted from fissure 8, and are there any speculations about where that difference (if any) is collecting? Or, how does the magma flow rate previously delivered to Pu'u O'O compare with the rate of eruption from fissure 8? Or maybe some question about the possible internal volume opened up underground by that 6.9 quake? How does the locus of the ground movement during that quake compare to the fissures that have opened? Even something interesting like, the new land at the ocean seems to be forming black sand beaches, is this material all from the current eruption, or is there a different source for the fine grained material apparently forming beaches? Here's another: what is the significance of the low gas emissions at Halema'uma'u and what would changes in those rates imply? How about gas emission rates at Pu'u O'O? Maybe a simple question like what's the elevation of the magma chamber under Halema'uma'u relative to fissure 8's?

    • @MorellioBenoir
      @MorellioBenoir 6 років тому

      Yeah that was done early on via chemical analysis of the lava. Lava coming out of the eastern rift zone did not come from the Kilauea magma chamber. At first it was, no longer.

    • @jagmarz
      @jagmarz 6 років тому +6

      Hmm. I thought it was the opposite of that... at first it was stale old magma from inside the rift zone, but then it became fresher. I do remember some commentary about how the composition had changed, but it's been quite a while, and a lot of magma since then!

    • @MorellioBenoir

    • @JR-yq9qi
      @JR-yq9qi 6 років тому +4

      Morellio Benoir--Wrong. The lava erupting from F8 is from the exact same magma chamber that supplied the reservoirs at Hale'mau'mau and Pu'u'o'o. The lava erupted from the fissures at the start of this was older magma that had sat underground for decades, when that was depleted, the fresher stuff fro the summit and Pu'u'o'o then erupted out of the fissures, now the supply is coming directly from the same magma source that once supplied the summit.

    • @g18886
      @g18886 6 років тому +4

      I emailed HVO-USGS to ask about the difference in volume of summit subsidence (13 mcm/day) and fissure 8 output (8-10 mcm/day) reported by Brantley at the meeting the other day. Here is their reply:
      Both numbers are approximate with the LERZ eruption rate value being the rougher estimate of the two. I wouldn't get too concerned about the difference until we have more accurate numbers for both the subsidence and eruption rates. The difference that you calculated are easily within the error bars for both rate estimates.
      You are asking good questions, many of the same questions we are asking and trying to answer. But we don't have solid answers yet.

    I have not heard any questions about the discoloration of the ocean area around the ocean entries. Is this a result of chemical reaction or chemical dilution?

    • @xaiano794
      @xaiano794 6 років тому

      Eugene Chekeir more likely convection caused by the heat of the lava under the water (pillow lava flows) which churns up sand and sediment, but that is just a guess.

    • @michaelkenyon3372
      @michaelkenyon3372 6 років тому

      what is chemical dilution?

    • @eugenechekeir4034
      @eugenechekeir4034 6 років тому

      The chemicals contained within the magma react with the salt water producing a 'salt' solution made up of a compound of chemicals contained within the ocean and chemicals contained within the magma.

    I am curious, this question would be directed to USGS, do we have an idea of the size and the location of the magma chamber relative to the surface of the collapsing crater? THE MAGMA CHAMBER: if we knew the size, the shape, the location relative to the surface, and a reasonable guess of the volume of ejectable magma and basing current flow as theoretical constant - based on these variables couldn’t a REALLY rough estimation be made on possible duration of this event? It seems that you’ve timed the collapses and expect roughly when the next will occur. You seem to have tracked the increments of its drop. You’ve noted and recorded seismic activity. We can see the crater is dropping and can make guesses without data. With all the data surely you could guess better than us! Even if you’re wrong, as experts in this, your guess ought to be better than ours!

    • @phil_j_c
      @phil_j_c 6 років тому

      Kilauea is an hot spot volcano; therefore even if the magma chamber more or less empties the fissure could be directly fed by the hot spot source.. It's the tectonic plates that move across the hot spot therefore the outlet place for the magma changes to the next weakest point...

      @phreatomagmatic8016 6 років тому

      Phil_J_C
      If the fissure was being fed directly, for one the summit would not be subsiding and secondly there would have been a lot of deep quakes in the run up to this eruption directly below in which there wasn't.

    • @phil_j_c
      @phil_j_c 6 років тому

      I didn't say it definitely was; I said it could happen.. only going by what I heard/saw from various USGS sources.. The volcano is subsiding because the magma chamber below is emptying..again according to USGS..and I would totally agree with that, it's logical. If the subsidence ever stops does that mean the chamber is empty? or does that mean the pressure in the chamber is sufficient to withstand the weight of the collapse from above ? If fissure 8 continues and the chamber is empty, then the lava is coming from somewhere else..also logical.?

    • @phreatomagmatic8016
      @phreatomagmatic8016 6 років тому

      Phil_J_C
      When the subsidence does eventually stop, it's probably because the level of the magma chamber has fallen to the level of the conduit, not necessarily empty. Don't forget, theories change. Some of the previous theories have gone out the window during this eruption. I think you'll also find scientists are like anyone who works in similar fields, large ego's, difficult to work with, no two agree and are incredibly stubborn, but that is how ideas come to light. Fantastic. 😊😊😊😊😊

  • @tonydavies8683
    @tonydavies8683 6 років тому

    is it possible to use the quakes to sonogram the rift zone to find out what is going on ? Or has no one thought to try it? now that we have a constant or some what reliable quake activity a sensor array could be deployed by huey and moved to make an over lapped digital model of the underground movement of lava.. could really give a lot of incite to what is going on and answer more of the questions.

    • @xaiano794
      @xaiano794 6 років тому

      Tony Davies I don't think that would logistically be possible and besides they have a pretty good idea what is happening, the rift zone is separating and slumping slowly towards the ocean, the lava finds the voids left behind and flows down from the magma chamber at the summit.

    • @capnclawhammer3024
      @capnclawhammer3024 6 років тому

      Tony Davies: That would be an interesting experiment, but in my amateur opinion, the variables involved would be too numerous for an accurate image to be obtainable. Then again, that may in fact be something that they're already doing and I just haven't heard about or twigged to it.

    I don't have the slightest expertise about volcanoes. This occurrence is the only one that I have continuously kept an eye on. From my observations about how the USGS scientists simply don't know about why many events are happening and what to expect, it would be wise to err on the side of caution than wishful thinking. Some of the comments I have read would leave one to believe that the author of said comments have greater knowledge and insight (maybe it's ESP) than USGS employees. I know that to ease someone to bliss by kissing boo boos and telling them everything is going to be all right is conveniently simple. I believe it is folly. Let the facts and evidence speak. Fact: The USGS, residents, soothsayers, doomsayers, nor commenters, including myself, know exactly if the will be a catastrophic or benign ending. Take what I say with a grain of salt. Christian or non-Christian, benefit yourself and watch a movie/documentary called, The Coming Convergence. Good bless you all.

      The progression of hot spot volcanoes along the Hawaii islands has gone on for millions, if not billions of years. Kilauea is the currently most active vent, but eventually the activity will move farther to the south (or rather, the Islands will move more towards the north.)

      Don't worry too much about the subsidence. It's perfectly normal during a large outpouring of lava, especially shield volcanoes. If you look at every shield volcano on the planet, they have caldera's, all created by the same process that's happening right in front of our eyes (probably on a much larger scale). Admittedly it's a rare event in a human lifetime, so we're very lucky to be witnessing this.

      It's not unprecedented. It's unprecedented in the last 200 years. That's a blink of an eye during Kilauea's lifetime. It's happened many times in the past, and will most certainly happen many times in the future. Military exercises have absolutely nothing to do with it. The world isn't strange, the inhabitants are the problem. 😀😀😀😀

      TheYoyozo I think that a hand made hemp rope ladder would be dropped over the edge of the crater by a princess who had not slept for three days. Her betrothed, in order to impress her father and win her hand in marriage, would then climb down the ladder to the floor of the crater and use his golden trowel to dig through the base of the crater into the top of the lava reservoir cavern, where the Thai Football team would be keeping warm by their camp fire.
      They would have to maintain silence throughout the rescue due to the sleeping giant dogs guarding the subterranean volcanic jewels. Also they would not be allowed to look back in case they turned into a pillar of lava.
      One by one they would have to climb the rope ladder, too time consuming and they would miss closing time at the crater side restaurant. Fortunately the princess’s sister with the flaxen hair would arrive to crochet her long golden locks into a giant rescue basket. Together with the water sprites evacuated from the hot ponds, they would haul the team and their coach and the princess’s betrothed back out of the crater. Happily the princess’s father would agree to the princess marrying her young man, and all the Thai football team, the coach, their families, the water sprites and everyone else in Hawaii would gather by the side of Fissure 8 to celebrate their wedding with a community barbecue.

      Big island video news has at least one video of a collapse event during the day. Why is it “fishy” that the collapse events happen about every 24 hours? It’s not fishy. And mostly in the dark because it’s a cycle. It’s nature. Why do humans always want to control nature?

      Mike Man I think you are comparing this with volcanoes like Mount St Helens, which had a landslide, followed by a volcanic explosion. Kīlauea is a different type of volcano, a Shield volcano.
      If you look for the USGS Facebook page, lots is shown on there. Also look for the USGS website where you will find lots about all sorts of volcanoes as well as Kilauea.
      On You Tube, look for channels like USGS, and Big Island Video news.

    Was I the only one who caught that bs answer to the 1st question... 😂😂😂 What she didn't want to say is that because of the planetary alignment of all the planets being on one side of the sun is going to put a high risk of a more aggressive lava flow... And we are currently seeing an uptick on volcanic activity along the ring of fire... Next question please...

      Could be decades, but what is the hurry.

      Everyone will pay whether they want to or not. Just like we are forced to pay for Obama Care for people who refuse to get off their lazy asses and work. Same with welfare, SSDI and all the other bullshit.

      Sue Bot: My tax dollars are best spent on helping middle-class Americans get by day by day, and if that means paying for medical assistance, that's fine. A border wall no mater its height, will NOT stop illegal immigration. They will jump or fly over. They will sail around. They will tunnel under. It's total BS and you know it! When people are running for their lives, a wall is an inconvenience, not a blocker. Your calling Americans "lazy" reveals your self-absorption and inadequacies, not the reality of most people my country, which happens to be the USA.
