Jim is a highly intelligent researcher but has problems to express his knowledge in ordinary human language. Steve is no less but can also give an explanation to reporters with the mind of 12-year-olds. All HVO and USGS people are very competent and intelligent scientist, I like them all.
These scientists have become my heroes as of late for many reasons, but tonight's question and answer brought my respect to a whole new level. I wish had their "magma-tude" of patience!
I don't know what is so hard to understand about this. Fissure 8 is going to be venting lava indefinitely until there is some change. That could be tomorrow or it could be decades from now. They say "months to years" because they don't want to give the impression that there is any reason to believe it will stop tomorrow or that it will never end either. But it seems that reporter got the opposite impression, that months and years are two distinct scenarios and not just a general way of telling laypeople "this could go on for a very long time; we don't know when it will stop."
Didn't janet say a few weeks ago that the summit reservoir isn't necessarily the only thing feeding fissure 8, and that there may be a direct connection to the actual conduit from the mantle that feeds kilauea? If so, i would think it has a pretty much endless supply of magma.

The problem is that the public expect these so called "experts" to have all the answers, what is becoming glaringly apparent now due to the scope of this eruption is that they are just guesstimating for the most part.
Rate of Volume from fissure 8 has more than tripled in the last few weeks. It’s gone from 30 cubic meters per second to about 100 cubic meters per second. In comparison Puu Oo only released an average of 3 cubic meters per sec over 35 years. USGS is telling us that the high rate suggests fissure 8 is being supplied directly from the magma reservoir at the Summit. That gives fissure 8 a much larger lava supply to continue to erupt from. Meaning this eruption won’t stop until the conduit to fissure 8 is blocked. Although months for continued eruption is still possible, the likelihood is that this event will continue for years. This is unprecedented over the last 200 years. However, a similar eruption along the lower east rift before settlers arrived from the Continent lasted about a decade. It’s not well documented cuz only native Hawaiians witnessed it.

Just wanted to add during one of these q&a call in updates earlier on when there was a noticeable change in the color & fluidity/consistency of the lava from fissure 8, USGS commented(I believe it was Wendy Stovall) on the temperature and composition of the lava. The lava composition had started as older stored magma then changed to match that of what was in Pu'u O'o crater before it drained. Her comment on the then current lava temperature coming out of fissure 8 at the surface was pretty much as hot as it gets for the Hawaiian islands and that it was "tapping mantle temps". 😳 That was over a month ago and F8 continues to pump away! Incredible to see the power of mother nature in action!

The Halema uma u is feeding the fissure 8 vent directly underground. Being as it is close to sea level (Fissure 8) and how high the Halema uma u crater is this will be adding to the pressure in keeping the Fissure erupting. The reason it is so voluminus is the direct corilation betweein the former twin summit craters. The pressure keeping those up (Halema uma u and Puu o o) filled to 4000ft elevation was sent to a zone of less than 1000ft of elevation. This may go on for a generation seeing as how much pressure is being released and the hotspot being an endless supply of magma.

The confusion, I believe, is that the experts, at the beginning, kept saying this would only last into the time frame of weeks, or months. Now it's years. I know she asked the question vaguely, but I wish they would get someone to answer questions that can explain the science for those with no science background.
Why does it have to be up to the reporters to get the information out of these government agencies monitoring this eruption, why aren't they just providing weekly reports covering all the information without needing to be prompted? The reason is they are downplaying it because if this eruption lasts years the economic impact on Hawaii will be very detrimental, they are already struggling to find money in their budget thus far and it's only been a couple of months. The first speaker totally downplayed the last two big quakes at the summit which were 5.4 and 5.5 respectively, this is significant because the large summit quakes have consistently been around 5.2 and 5.3. Why wasn't this information relayed about the quakes getting stronger with more time between them?

I am surprised that there has not been any updated Imaging released of the volume and shape of the magma chamber. At Yellowstone and other volcanoes, the magma Chambers have all been imaged by using earthquake vibrations to create 3D models of the magma in the chamber. Why aren't these being done and released to the public on a regular basis? It would seem that the only real wild card in eruption duration would be the quantity of magma coming up directly from deeper inside the Earth. The magma chamber itself must have a defined volume. Estimated total volume of the magma chamber and Lava Lake minus the estimated erupted volume so far gives an estimate of the total remaining magma that is going to erupt. Shouldn't this be the case?
Dear Brian, What a good question. All grant applications had to be submitted last March, before this eruption started, so there is no money to do seismic mapping. Meanwhile, the US Congress has gutted funding for scientific research, so there probably won't be any funding next year either. If you want an answer to this one, ask your congressman.
The quakes are not deep enough for resonance imaging to show the magma chamber which is 25-30 miles below surface and F8 is not being fed by the summit magma reservoirs, those are basically empty now and the supply is coming directly from the mantle plume. That’s why.
The USGS briefings have stated that there is still a lot of molten rock inside Kilauea, and that this rock is what is feeding fissure 8. That's a good point about how shallow the earthquakes are, but there have been several 3 miles to 3.5 miles down that should tell us something about the magma conduit. Was the magma conduit becoming blocked? Was it clearing a blockage so more magma could erupt? We sure won't know this week, because the reporters are too ignorant to ask a decent question.
The fact is no one should hold their breath on if and when it stops. All that is guaranteed is geology will continue to change. Futhermore the earth has a never ending supply of magma in it and will continue to erupt from wherever it can. This just reminds me of kids constantly asking " are we there yet?" There is also a chance the caldera could completely collapse and the eruption will continue.
i can't help but feel embarrassed for the reporters and the USGS here, USGS have much more pressing things to deal with instead of answering half baked questions from people who don't even know what they want/try to ask
Oldrn Dirt as a scientist, I kept banging my head against the desk. It was as though she wasn't listening and just plowing ahead with the questions without thinking/interpreting the response. Science can demonstrate evidence and provide a highly possible conjecture, but we never "definitively prove" anything.
She has not a clue how to ask questions, and they are honestly doing their best--scientists don't like to make wild speculative guesses, they work on scientific principles. Gawd what a dummy that one was.
I would prefer questions that are more to the point. It's apparent that the magma reservoir came from the mantle. Is there evidence that the mantle is contributing to the eruption? There must be a quarter of the geology grad students in the world working on this eruption. Are they coming up with any preliminary results? All those earthquakes should be shaking the mountain enough to create a pretty good seismic map of the interior. Are they not getting adequate funding to find out what is going on? The summit collapse has been about twice the volume of the erupted lava. Where is the volume going? The reporters are obviously not familiar enough with geology to ask coherent questions.
Questions. How come the summit crater is made up of rubble when the lava hardened as a solid mass? How high is the lava channel above the ground? How deep is the water where the flow is entering the ocean?
Mapping has been done using satellites for decades. Even that mapping technology has advanced since the introduction of LIDAR technology, allowing for far higher resolution, including advanced topography in areas with dense jungle undergrowth. That and advancements in cartography using advanced computing makes it possible to generate a revised, highly detailed map of the island every few days. If they had unlimited access to the mapping satellite data, it is possible that they could generate updated maps every hour.
I appreciate the updates. I don't know who or how reporters are chosen, that being said...reporters should have SOME knowledge of the topic in which they are asking professionals about. The speaker could not have been clearer, months to years. Do you not understand, hummm...months to years...on a very basic adult reasoning you would grasp - they must not be able to give a precise time frame. Where has this reporter been, if reporting for a paper...every report since the end of may has said, "we don't know"...if covering a volcano please do your homework. Waste of everyone's time.
Many people were critical of the reporter because of the pitch of her voice and the seeming obtuseness she displayed, but I think if you consider it carefully, you will realize that she is simply, and arguably rightly so, incredulous. In the roughly three months of the eruption it has covered nearly 8000 acres in lava. It has destroyed 700 homes and completely wiped out a seaside town with beloved tide pools and swimming areas, the warm pond and a cherished school. It destroyed the locals favorite surfing beach and has covered nearly all of the swimming areas on that part of the island. It threatens the only boat ramp in the area. A survey of the coastline will show that a great deal of it is cliff faced and thus offers no beaches. If you look at some of the websites for the vacation homes destroyed, you will feel perhaps some of the sense of loss. The 1960 flow is still pretty much a barren wasteland after nearly 60 years, so this will not be transformed into tropical beauty in the lifetime of anyone witnessing these events. So imagine all of your favorite places and secret favorite spots being utterly destroyed and buried under 10 to 50 feet of rock forever. Then consider that it may continue for years, even decades. Also, she was right about the volume. Another USGS report shows that this event has already erupted twice as much as any eruption in the last 200 years. So, years more of this would very much be unprecedented. Perhaps, after thinking in those terms, one might be a little more forgiving of a high pitched tone of a distraught local resident. Reporter or not, she is a person who is upset. Thankfully, the persons taking her questions understood that and displayed patience and compassion.

Just to clarify the message in the video, the USGS stated that the eruption could last for MONTHS to YEARS. They really can't say with any certainty how long it may last. If you don't understand this, perhaps you need to watch the video again.
Holy crap woman! It's mother nature, can you predict when a tornado is going start and where?! We can only see so much especially if it's underground coming from Earth's mantle! I don't have super xray vision and I don't think USGS does either!
I find it a little odd that at this stage of the current eruption, HVO/USGS has made no mention of Lo'ihi. Lo'ihi is the underwater seamount, about 25 miles off the southeast coast, in which there is a consensus agreement that this is the next Hawaiian Island being created. What is puzzling is that Lo'ihi has not been active since 1996. The main conduit feeding magma into the Kilauea system is located just east of Pahala at a depth of 20 miles and is located about halfway between Kilauea Summit and Lo'ihi. If Lo'ihi were to awaken, then it would suggest that the magma has an alternative direction to take. So far there has been no seismic indication of magma moving toward Lo'ihi. For now, all the magma coming up through the mantle seems to be going into Kilauea's system. However, in the past 2 days (7/23 and 7/24) there has been increased seismic activity near Pu'u O'o and Mauna Ulu (not Mauna Loa). Not major magnitude stuff, but maybe something new might be developing there.

100 meters cubed/second. that my friends is a sh!tload of ... anything! 'interruption of the conduit ... ', this is the fissure channel from the caldera to #8. at some level down in the caldera ... the sinking cap will eclipse the fissure channel, cutting off the supply. this for many will seem like a good thing ... 'yeaaaah! the lava has stopped/seriously slowed down!' ... good news/bad news ...cuz this means that the magma pressure will be pushing on the collapsed caldera cap ... with the distinct possibility of a very sizable 'blow'. this may be at the caldera ... or any number of 'weak spots' in/on/around mauna loa. the latest discovered 'bulge' was found between the caldera and leilani. if the new bulge was the 'blow' point, this would then encompass leilani, black sands, kaimu, makena kalapana and areas in the 1990 flow field and maybe as far as kalani/seaview, IF this is a pyroclastic event similar to mt st helens. i have lost my home and have taken a watch, listen(not so much to USGS(SORRY!) point of view, but HVO and other sources). i have no intentions of just walking away, AND i have no commitment to being stupid and dying by being ignorant. we must all do this 'situation' at the level we can/will, without putting others in danger. with love and my kine aloha!

(Friction based heat ?) 4) as the expanding circumference of collapses continues at the summit and moving farther from lava lake , will that decrease the concussive effect or pulse / surge at fissure 8 5) can thick viscosity lava and super heated liquified lava have the same mass just differ in the flow speed ? Fissure 8 today : observations at the cone , surge / lull observers are obvious - morning video show more “illuminated sky” . Observed at the cone by an experienced videographer was that fissure activity during surge was intense and sounded “like a jet engine”
Months and years how long do you think it will take to move mount kilauea to the beach via lava river. Will it stop at the magma chamber? At the moment pressure on top of the lava chamber is greater so lava comes out of F8. But once the pressure of the lava flow becomes less greater than what's above kilauea lava chamber it could explode open thus the river stopping for a while. Or it could maintain the flow to F8 and pull everything down to ground level of F8. But that's a lot of earth moved either way you look at it. For get months more like years with a bang to end it.
I'd love to know what effect this is having on the planet. I've already calculated that the lava stream from fissure 8 has produced enough to go around the planet at least twice. How much warmer is the ocean in say a 50 mile radius area of ocean entry? Has anyone done those calculations. With all this lava being released the word implode comes to mind. There must be some vast voids appearing under our feet. So many unanswered questions

It is a fissure, after almost 3 months it is still a fissure, and probably it will stay a fissure in the days, months or years to come, as things goes on... Why? Because it is not a volcano but the output of a tube fed by the Kilauea volcano. And it's not a big enough eruption to justify a name, it's just a hole pouring out large amounts of magma.
Kind of helps advertise tourism to see the lava flow. State could stock up on gas masks and armored boats. Kona airport and hotels should be renting gas masks sometime soon. On a serious note it must be a real pain for everyone downwind of the flows.
You've been *Nina'd She could certainly be a meme. I almost turned this off before I realized this must be intended as comedy. At least Jim and Steve used the opportunity to try to share some interesting bits for those of us that are only watching these YT uploads. She certainly appears to fall into the category of people who have no idea what science is or what scientists do. I think everyone should be reminded science is the recording and analysis of observations. Assumptions and predictions are not scientific. If a question directed to any real scientist is about anything other than observations and data it is a bad question. Weather forecasts and those that present them are not real scientists. It's really a disservice that they are being presented on equal ground here. The probability of a circumstance is somewhat related to the observational data, but the only information any real scientist can speak to is the scope of past circumstances and events of a similar nature.
Does it depend on what happens? Um, that may be a valid question in epistemology and quantum physics, but when it comes to volcanoes it's safe to assume the answer is yes.
Reporters ought to be asking for the water table info. In the beginning of the eruption the Jim guy mentioned if the lava receded to the water table that is when very explosive eruptions typically happen. They can interpret the domes top by earthquake activity it figures. But eh we're just along for the ride.
NightWaves they have revised the idea that interaction with ground water can create the explosive eruptions. One of the things they have seen is no steam driven eruptions but only dissolved gasses driving the eruptions.
I am fascinated by the tornadoes and how much can be flung up very high. I was watching a video by Apaue Hawaii Tours tonight and the lava looked dark so it must have cooled. Over and over this happened. Lava seems to be heavy, is it? These tornadoes seem pretty strong to fling this high and far. I am fascinated but don't know exactly what to ask. I would love you toe pound this and other phenomena happening. Thanks
Lynda, lava is molten rock. The flowing river stuff has a consistency kinda like melted toffee, so yes, it's heavy. On the other hand, when it's blown up into the air as it was during the earlier fountaining at F8, the escaping gases puff it up so it gets more like glass meringue and is called tephra. The lava river near to F8 is still boiling and bubbling. The tornadoes were catching those bubbles as they popped at the surface and flinging the heavy, toffee-like stuff. Pretty (and) impressive. Does that help? Scott's video was great - maybe one of his best. It started off a bit slow, but wow!

Well, I'll say that I didn't see this coming as a long term event. I assumed it would stop after a month or two and return to the status quo like previous historical eruptions. Seems that this may be a long term combination of puu o o and hale mau mau. I wonder if the summit collapse events are pressurizing the magma, causing the high flow rates, and that as the subsidence slows or stops, perhaps the fissure 8 flow rate slows down more to historical averages for Kilauea. HVO had mentioned that there was a "pulse" in the flow rate that they could measure after each collapse event, which might lend credence to that. Either way, my sympathies for the people of that area of the island, and for everyone who will have to deal with Vog for however many months or years this takes.

These scientists have become my heroes as of late for many reasons, but tonight's question and answer brought my respect to a whole new level. I wish had their "magma-tude" of patience!
I don't know what is so hard to understand about this. Fissure 8 is going to be venting lava indefinitely until there is some change. That could be tomorrow or it could be decades from now. They say "months to years" because they don't want to give the impression that there is any reason to believe it will stop tomorrow or that it will never end either. But it seems that reporter got the opposite impression, that months and years are two distinct scenarios and not just a general way of telling laypeople "this could go on for a very long time; we don't know when it will stop."
It might help if they admitted they have no clue.

Didn't janet say a few weeks ago that the summit reservoir isn't necessarily the only thing feeding fissure 8, and that there may be a direct connection to the actual conduit from the mantle that feeds kilauea? If so, i would think it has a pretty much endless supply of magma.

He drooled out "we don't know" because they really don't know, it makes no difference about the structure of the volcano when they don't understand the mechanisms of the eruptive phase it's experiencing. The problem is that the public expect these so called "experts" to have all the answers, what is becoming glaringly apparent now due to the scope of this eruption is that they are just guesstimating for the most part.
Rate of Volume from fissure 8 has more than tripled in the last few weeks. It’s gone from 30 cubic meters per second to about 100 cubic meters per second. In comparison Puu Oo only released an average of 3 cubic meters per sec over 35 years. USGS is telling us that the high rate suggests fissure 8 is being supplied directly from the magma reservoir at the Summit. That gives fissure 8 a much larger lava supply to continue to erupt from. Meaning this eruption won’t stop until the conduit to fissure 8 is blocked.
Although months for continued eruption is still possible, the likelihood is that this event will continue for years. This is unprecedented over the last 200 years. However, a similar eruption along the lower east rift before settlers arrived from the Continent lasted about a decade. It’s not well documented cuz only native Hawaiians witnessed it.

Just wanted to add during one of these q&a call in updates earlier on when there was a noticeable change in the color & fluidity/consistency of the lava from fissure 8, USGS commented(I believe it was Wendy Stovall) on the temperature and composition of the lava. The lava composition had started as older stored magma then changed to match that of what was in Pu'u O'o crater before it drained. Her comment on the then current lava temperature coming out of fissure 8 at the surface was pretty much as hot as it gets for the Hawaiian islands and that it was "tapping mantle temps". 😳 That was over a month ago and F8 continues to pump away! Incredible to see the power of mother nature in action!

The Halema uma u is feeding the fissure 8 vent directly underground. Being as it is close to sea level (Fissure 8) and how high the Halema uma u crater is this will be adding to the pressure in keeping the Fissure erupting. The reason it is so voluminus is the direct corilation betweein the former twin summit craters. The pressure keeping those up (Halema uma u and Puu o o) filled to 4000ft elevation was sent to a zone of less than 1000ft of elevation. This may go on for a generation seeing as how much pressure is being released and the hotspot being an endless supply of magma.

The confusion, I believe, is that the experts, at the beginning, kept saying this would only last into the time frame of weeks, or months. Now it's years. I know she asked the question vaguely, but I wish they would get someone to answer questions that can explain the science for those with no science background.
Why does it have to be up to the reporters to get the information out of these government agencies monitoring this eruption, why aren't they just providing weekly reports covering all the information without needing to be prompted? The reason is they are downplaying it because if this eruption lasts years the economic impact on Hawaii will be very detrimental, they are already struggling to find money in their budget thus far and it's only been a couple of months. The first speaker totally downplayed the last two big quakes at the summit which were 5.4 and 5.5 respectively, this is significant because the large summit quakes have consistently been around 5.2 and 5.3. Why wasn't this information relayed about the quakes getting stronger with more time between them?

I am surprised that there has not been any updated Imaging released of the volume and shape of the magma chamber. At Yellowstone and other volcanoes, the magma Chambers have all been imaged by using earthquake vibrations to create 3D models of the magma in the chamber. Why aren't these being done and released to the public on a regular basis? It would seem that the only real wild card in eruption duration would be the quantity of magma coming up directly from deeper inside the Earth. The magma chamber itself must have a defined volume. Estimated total volume of the magma chamber and Lava Lake minus the estimated erupted volume so far gives an estimate of the total remaining magma that is going to erupt. Shouldn't this be the case?

What a good question. All grant applications had to be submitted last March, before this eruption started, so there is no money to do seismic mapping. Meanwhile, the US Congress has gutted funding for scientific research, so there probably won't be any funding next year either. If you want an answer to this one, ask your congressman.
The quakes are not deep enough for resonance imaging to show the magma chamber which is 25-30 miles below surface and F8 is not being fed by the summit magma reservoirs, those are basically empty now and the supply is coming directly from the mantle plume. That’s why.
The USGS briefings have stated that there is still a lot of molten rock inside Kilauea, and that this rock is what is feeding fissure 8. That's a good point about how shallow the earthquakes are, but there have been several 3 miles to 3.5 miles down that should tell us something about the magma conduit. Was the magma conduit becoming blocked? Was it clearing a blockage so more magma could erupt? We sure won't know this week, because the reporters are too ignorant to ask a decent question.
Now I'm going to watch "Several Flavors of Seismogenic Magma Movement Under Kilauea" that just popped up on the right hand side of the screen.

The fact is no one should hold their breath on if and when it stops. All that is guaranteed is geology will continue to change. Futhermore the earth has a never ending supply of magma in it and will continue to erupt from wherever it can. This just reminds me of kids constantly asking " are we there yet?" There is also a chance the caldera could completely collapse and the eruption will continue.
I doubt its never ending mind you a 1000 generations will never see it end either.

Science can demonstrate evidence and provide a highly possible conjecture, but we never "definitively prove" anything.

I would prefer questions that are more to the point. It's apparent that the magma reservoir came from the mantle. Is there evidence that the mantle is contributing to the eruption? There must be a quarter of the geology grad students in the world working on this eruption. Are they coming up with any preliminary results? All those earthquakes should be shaking the mountain enough to create a pretty good seismic map of the interior. Are they not getting adequate funding to find out what is going on? The summit collapse has been about twice the volume of the erupted lava. Where is the volume going?
The reporters are obviously not familiar enough with geology to ask coherent questions.

Mapping has been done using satellites for decades. Even that mapping technology has advanced since the introduction of LIDAR technology, allowing for far higher resolution, including advanced topography in areas with dense jungle undergrowth. That and advancements in cartography using advanced computing makes it possible to generate a revised, highly detailed map of the island every few days. If they had unlimited access to the mapping satellite data, it is possible that they could generate updated maps every hour.

So let me look at my magic crystal ball: The flow will absolutely stop at 12:00 on …… STOP ASKING WHEN IT WILL STOP!
Many people were critical of the reporter because of the pitch of her voice and the seeming obtuseness she displayed, but I think if you consider it carefully, you will realize that she is simply, and arguably rightly so, incredulous. In the roughly three months of the eruption it has covered nearly 8000 acres in lava. It has destroyed 700 homes and completely wiped out a seaside town with beloved tide pools and swimming areas, the warm pond and a cherished school. It destroyed the locals favorite surfing beach and has covered nearly all of the swimming areas on that part of the island. It threatens the only boat ramp in the area. A survey of the coastline will show that a great deal of it is cliff faced and thus offers no beaches. If you look at some of the websites for the vacation homes destroyed, you will feel perhaps some of the sense of loss. The 1960 flow is still pretty much a barren wasteland after nearly 60 years, so this will not be transformed into tropical beauty in the lifetime of anyone witnessing these events. So imagine all of your favorite places and secret favorite spots being utterly destroyed and buried under 10 to 50 feet of rock forever. Then consider that it may continue for years, even decades. Also, she was right about the volume. Another USGS report shows that this event has already erupted twice as much as any eruption in the last 200 years. So, years more of this would very much be unprecedented. Perhaps, after thinking in those terms, one might be a little more forgiving of a high pitched tone of a distraught local resident. Reporter or not, she is a person who is upset. Thankfully, the persons taking her questions understood that and displayed patience and compassion.

Just to clarify the message in the video, the USGS stated that the eruption could last for MONTHS to YEARS. They really can't say with any certainty how long it may last. If you don't understand this, perhaps you need to watch the video again.

I find it a little odd that at this stage of the current eruption, HVO/USGS has made no mention of Lo'ihi. Lo'ihi is the underwater seamount, about 25 miles off the southeast coast, in which there is a consensus agreement that this is the next Hawaiian Island being created. What is puzzling is that Lo'ihi has not been active since 1996. The main conduit feeding magma into the Kilauea system is located just east of Pahala at a depth of 20 miles and is located about halfway between Kilauea Summit and Lo'ihi. If Lo'ihi were to awaken, then it would suggest that the magma has an alternative direction to take. So far there has been no seismic indication of magma moving toward Lo'ihi. For now, all the magma coming up through the mantle seems to be going into Kilauea's system. However, in the past 2 days (7/23 and 7/24) there has been increased seismic activity near Pu'u O'o and Mauna Ulu (not Mauna Loa). Not major magnitude stuff, but maybe something new might be developing there.

', this is the fissure channel from the caldera to #8. at some level down in the caldera ... the sinking cap will eclipse the fissure channel, cutting off the supply. this for many will seem like a good thing ... 'yeaaaah! the lava has stopped/seriously slowed down!' ... good news/bad news ...cuz this means that the magma pressure will be pushing on the collapsed caldera cap ... with the distinct possibility of a very sizable 'blow'. this may be at the caldera ... or any number of 'weak spots' in/on/around mauna loa. the latest discovered 'bulge' was found between the caldera and leilani. if the new bulge was the 'blow' point, this would then encompass leilani, black sands, kaimu, makena kalapana and areas in the 1990 flow field and maybe as far as kalani/seaview, IF this is a pyroclastic event similar to mt st helens.
i have lost my home and have taken a watch, listen(not so much to USGS(SORRY!) point of view, but HVO and other sources). i have no intentions of just walking away, AND i have no commitment to being stupid and dying by being ignorant. we must all do this 'situation' at the level we can/will, without putting others in danger.

nux: thank you. the one thing I'm seeing is the transition from shock, to despair to anger ... for many. kapaho was a loss ... but it was a gated rental community ... distinctly separated, and designed to be/stay that way. for those people my heart goes out. for the other 400 homes, typically these were people who actually lived and participated in the 'community'. the didn't keep themselves separate or distinct(hi maki mak).

Fissure 8 today : observations at the cone , surge / lull observers are obvious - morning video show more “illuminated sky” . Observed at the cone by an experienced videographer was that fissure activity during surge was intense and sounded “like a jet engine”

Will it stop at the magma chamber?
At the moment pressure on top of the lava chamber is greater so lava comes out of F8. But once the pressure of the lava flow becomes less greater than what's above kilauea lava chamber it could explode open thus the river stopping for a while.
Or it could maintain the flow to F8 and pull everything down to ground level of F8. But that's a lot of earth moved either way you look at it.

I'd love to know what effect this is having on the planet. I've already calculated that the lava stream from fissure 8 has produced enough to go around the planet at least twice. How much warmer is the ocean in say a 50 mile radius area of ocean entry? Has anyone done those calculations. With all this lava being released the word implode comes to mind. There must be some vast voids appearing under our feet. So many unanswered questions

It is a fissure, after almost 3 months it is still a fissure, and probably it will stay a fissure in the days, months or years to come, as things goes on...
Why? Because it is not a volcano but the output of a tube fed by the Kilauea volcano. And it's not a big enough eruption to justify a name, it's just a hole pouring out large amounts of magma.

She certainly appears to fall into the category of people who have no idea what science is or what scientists do.
I think everyone should be reminded science is the recording and analysis of observations. Assumptions and predictions are not scientific. If a question directed to any real scientist is about anything other than observations and data it is a bad question. Weather forecasts and those that present them are not real scientists. It's really a disservice that they are being presented on equal ground here. The probability of a circumstance is somewhat related to the observational data, but the only information any real scientist can speak to is the scope of past circumstances and events of a similar nature.
Does it depend on what happens? Um, that may be a valid question in epistemology and quantum physics, but when it comes to volcanoes it's safe to assume the answer is yes.
Reporters ought to be asking for the water table info. In the beginning of the eruption the Jim guy mentioned if the lava receded to the water table that is when very explosive eruptions typically happen. They can interpret the domes top by earthquake activity it figures. But eh we're just along for the ride.
NightWaves they have revised the idea that interaction with ground water can create the explosive eruptions. One of the things they have seen is no steam driven eruptions but only dissolved gasses driving the eruptions.

I am fascinated by the tornadoes and how much can be flung up very high. I was watching a video by Apaue Hawaii Tours tonight and the lava looked dark so it must have cooled. Over and over this happened. Lava seems to be heavy, is it? These tornadoes seem pretty strong to fling this high and far. I am fascinated but don't know exactly what to ask. I would love you toe pound this and other phenomena happening. Thanks
Lynda, lava is molten rock. The flowing river stuff has a consistency kinda like melted toffee, so yes, it's heavy. On the other hand, when it's blown up into the air as it was during the earlier fountaining at F8, the escaping gases puff it up so it gets more like glass meringue and is called tephra. The lava river near to F8 is still boiling and bubbling. The tornadoes were catching those bubbles as they popped at the surface and flinging the heavy, toffee-like stuff. Pretty (and) impressive. Does that help? Scott's video was great - maybe one of his best. It started off a bit slow, but wow!

a nice combination of a persistent questioner with a geologist incapable of communicating with the public. he should tell her from the beginning that there is an enormous pool of "lava" (magma) underground that is draining out of fissure 8. it is absolutely enormous...much greater in volume than the amount of lava that has already come out of the ground. and also it is being replenished by magma deep in the mantle of the earth...SO...we have no idea how long this will go on....

Well, I'll say that I didn't see this coming as a long term event. I assumed it would stop after a month or two and return to the status quo like previous historical eruptions. Seems that this may be a long term combination of puu o o and hale mau mau.
I wonder if the summit collapse events are pressurizing the magma, causing the high flow rates, and that as the subsidence slows or stops, perhaps the fissure 8 flow rate slows down more to historical averages for Kilauea. HVO had mentioned that there was a "pulse" in the flow rate that they could measure after each collapse event, which might lend credence to that.
Either way, my sympathies for the people of that area of the island, and for everyone who will have to deal with Vog for however many months or years this takes.
