    As a Pakistani this has made me respect Ganguly a lot more. I first saw Ganguly and Dravid in the Safari Series (mid 90s) against South Africa. I was so cricket crazy, I’d watch anything and this fell during the summer vacations so I watched every ball of every test. I remember some of the commentary word for word.
    Ganguly always seemed (visually) like a bit of a cry baby but I had no idea of the man behind the face. Much respect… especially since this was against Australia.

      He is not greatest cpatain ever, he never won icc trophies( except that shared one) he never won decisive overseas series, under his captaincy we choked in icc tournaments, a mere captain who was just overhyped as captain, believe it or not a captain is determined by the achievements not by stupid facts like "he created lengends" without him also india would have got Yuvraj, zaheer, dhoni, sehwag, gambhir, harbhajan etc. He had won nothing to show proud, India would have been in the same position as india were after azharddiun term when Saurav Ganguly retired if dhoni would not have come.

      Ah what you said is true, but really what is the benefit of being one?? I mean look at the current side of Aus they have a great team but dont win as of often as they used to under waugh and ponting also kohli has had decent success with his attitude (decent coz they are yet to win a trophy under him) andcoming back to aus i dont think there is anything wrong about sledging cuz beatng an opponent using mind games reflects your mental strength.Dont know why people label it as bad but anyhow i didnt even watch that era cricket and thats my opinion.

      @Fixity 3 роки тому +82

      @@fiascojuego4607 back then, they also used racial slur with full authority, later they had decided not to do that, not very prominently but it still continued for few decades. I hope you remember monkey gate scandal in which Harbhajan was accused for calling Andrew Symonds as monkey (although it wasn't proved and it was a very big incident) and in the same match Brad Hogg called Harbhajan as you Indian bastard and when asked he said that it's a part of their sledging. In a sense, back then sledging was very much brutal especially from Aussie. Fortunately, if you do like that today, be ready to get banned. Cricket is known to be a gentlemen's game and contradicting it is morally and ethically wrong. You can be quite and win cups, Ex. Current England team, India under MSD and most recently NZ under Kane Williamson. Yes sledging and winning was Old Aussie formula and it had worked for them back then doesn't mean that it will still work today also. Their respective cricket board will take strict action and you may have to sacrifice your career, yes sometimes sledging within limitation is to be taken in a competitive way but targeting somebody personally is very much wrong in my opinion.

      @calissswann7356 3 роки тому +15

      @@Fixity It's fiasco, yeah i guess you are right but see i started watching cricket in 2015 during the wc in Aus, so i don't have a good idea what happened during 2004 , but winning via sledging is actually not bad from my perspective, also it wasn't the case that ponting and all lacked talent, winning whilst using sledging rather indicates opponent's weaker mental ability or your mental strength. Also i don't disagree with you, like for e.g. Steve Smith distroyed England in the 2019 ashes even though the entire crowd was yelling at them and he remained calm and let his bat do the work and eventually beat them at Edgbaston, which even ponting couldn't do, So i guess everyone has a different style of playing.

      @@advinsatheesh466 It’s so funny how you mention Dhoni and how bringing him into the team was somehow an achievement of Ganguly, a notion which revolves around the fact that Dhoni was extremely successful in winning matches and trophies. Keeping that notion in mind if winning trophies wasn’t so important for a captain then Ganguly bringing in Dhoni wouldn’t be such a special thing to begin with.
      Secondly winning series, trophies, cups, etc are the exact metrics on which a teams success is measured upon and captains of those serial winning teams are regarded so highly. Something Ganguly was abysmal at!
      Now when you’re talking about I wouldn’t know Ganguly and his antics, I’ve been watching cricket and studying cricket for a long long time. Ganguly is overrated because he took command at a very dark time and India had seen it’s most useless captain in Sachin (greatest batsman but a bad captain) and Azharuddin who taught India how to win tournaments and series got into that scandal. Any half decent captain would have been able to lift India team, exactly what Ganguly was, a half decent captain with an extraordinary batting line up. The guy is overrated AF.
      And the audacity of people comparing him with Aussie captains 😂😂😂😂😂 He’s not even at par with Sri Lankan captains let alone Aussie captains… A half decent captain who had an ego of size of Mount Everest with an empty trophy cabinet to show for 😂😂😂 They find his achievement in recruiting Dhoni who has a cabinet full of trophies… by that definition, guy who brought in Steve Waugh, Viv Richards, Ponting, etc should be worshipped 😂 silly Ganguly Bhakt logics

On those days, as I climbed down the steps to start for my exam venue, I pictured I was Ganguly walking down the pavilion steps to open the innings and face the 2 most dreaded fast bowlers then -- McGrath and Lee.
    This thought itself gave me courage -- if my Hero can do so with such fearlessness and flamboyance, why couldn't I ? All my tension and weak-kneedness vanished from then on, and the exams were overcome. Thank you Dada, you taught an entire generation of us how to dream !!!!
