I'm going to say it: please don't ever change. I love your humour and video format. I honestly wish I had a friend like you lol... Anyway, let the records show that I supported you before your 100k subs in 1-2 years.
Hi! Art historian here :) You are a gem, and also right about your take on Impressionism! Impressionism is many things as there were many artists part of that group. Each with their own way of doing impressionistic painting. The name "Impressionism" actually comes from a bad review of their first exhibition in the 1870'ies: An art critic by the name of Leroy (very famous at the time) said that the paintings were mere impressions of reality, and meant it as a derogatory term. The young artists took it and used it, like the badasses they were! What I believe the main tennant in the impressionist movement is in fact the way they give the impression of landscapes, people, and things. A sense of cohession in light and tone (as you do!), and capturing the atmosphere (they called it "envoloppe" - an envolope of atmosphere).
@@dainah105 That's a great question! :) I would regard the way she lays down color in this video, her markmaking, and her coloring more on the impressionistic side. The drawings however are far more reminiscent of the artists of the 18th century. I always get a hint of the Fragonard and Boucher! :)
Every time I listen to your voiceovers, I just wish I knew you in real life 😭 you’re just so relatable and funny but you’re not even trying. You’re just nice to listen to because your rambles intrigue me. Quite frankly I’d listen to a podcast from you 😭❤️❤️
I love how real and genuine you are. The way you do your voiceovers it's like we're sitting here having a casual conversation with you and it's awesome.
18 year art educator here - keep doing what you're doing! It's amazing that you were so inspired by the exhibit. And it's perfectly okay to take the parts of movements you find useful. Some will say there are all these rules to good art but if you find something that works for you and it makes you happy, that's all you need. You will find your style evolving the longer you art. I used to find that scary, but I am so thankful I ended where I am now - my art makes me really happy. I love your art and your voice overs.
If the exhibit gave you a new appreciation for impressionism, you did take something from it! Art movements are complicated, long and always open to interpretation (I do so much googling in art museums lol) so of course you didn't glean the full history and intent of impressionism from one exhibit, but it did what it aimed to do, which was introduce you to a new perspective and get you passionate about the style :)
I just had horrible customers at work today so I went on youtube to change my mind during my lunch break and I see your video at the same moment, I'm so happy, 🥰🥰
I can't help myself, I'm so sorry, but: Squids have 8 arms and 2 tentacles! Octopuses have 8 arms and NO tentacles. But your art is still a ten... and it tickles me. It gives me tentickles.
I clicked on this video because of that shell. The colors look amazing, I can see the form, the values are right, and I loved how you applied the paint. Impressionism is my favorite art style because I swear it’s the most artistic form of art. It’s stunning.
I love your voice-overs. It's refreshing to hear people who are more authentic on UA-cam. And I think your work is definitely impressionistic and very beautiful.
You are so sweet ❤ ok so I love impressionism, one of my favs, not offended I promise. It's leaning on the abstract side of things, it's about pulling away from the details and focusing more on lights and darks. Traditionally, the brushstrokes were key as seen in van gogh's works, but that's because of how they had to mix oil paint back then. It was thicc lol. A lot of art is working with what we have, that time period is marked by how little day light they had, the paint was mixed right there and had to be used right there, how the lighting would change throughout the day vs how long it took to paint, it forced them to figure out what was important to the artists at the time. So now it's more about what are you seeing in that moment and what youre able to catch quickly in said moment, the "impression". We have a lot more mediums at our disposal so it'll look different than back then, but inspired nonetheless. Lemme know if that helps fellow artist! ❤
I always laugh while watching these because I love your commentary. It's so refreshing, and the art is just 🤌. These videos have helped me get back into my own art and inspire me to try new things. So thank you!
I have been watching the ambient ocean channel and seeing all the fish(those suckers looked like someone deco-podged them in the wildest fabric prints ever!) And the different corals, and just lots of sea life. And I wanted to sketch, draw, or paint them but all the detail was getting to me. You are inspiring to me!
i would say the shell is pretty impressionist in terms of the study of light and color of the photo and also the way you painted it, but what do i know
I really love how these peices came out and I hope they make the cut for stickers because yes please. Also there are 20k of us who think you are awesome, correct definition of impressionism or not.
I LOVE your art! I also love how you paint, partly because it looks hella cool but mostly I like it because of selfish reasons because it made so much sense in my brain and now painting feels less scary 😊 I also love how you talk because it's like, unpredictable and also interest contagious, meaning I now want to find out more about squids, impressionism, wet pallet and corals. And all of that will lead me down rabbit holes with more interesting stuff and yeah. This was fun fun fun all around and I'm now subscribed. ❤
Feeling so yucky today and this has cheered me up so much ❤ Sea stuff is my favorite of all time and I love seeing different renditions of sea things from people’s imaginations! THE SHELL. So. good. And the palette closeup at the end lmao
I LITERALLY LOVE YOUR HUMOR 😂 the whole impressionist thing is something i would definitely feel 😅 and i feel so seen by you having that whole moment 👏👏
(referencing 11:30 -ish) in the art history class i took in high school-- not the most highbrow stuff, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt-- my teacher explained that impressionism was sort of like painting from memory but with an ever-changing reference in front of you (like if you were painting "plein air"). Her hypothetical situation was of someone painting an ocean. The ocean doesn't ever really go still and as humans we cannot remember single frames of motion. So someone painting plein air might try to capture that transient moment of laying your eyes upon a gently stirring ocean by using brushstrokes and color to evoke that ever-present motion. Like, in the example above it's not so much about it being a wholly accurate representation of the subject matter(s), but rather capturing the way the light catches on the waves of the ocean before disappearing a moment later. Or the waves created by a boat or ship or whatever passing through the water. Or maybe visible fish and birds moving about. Just... with paint on a canvas (notoriously non-moving mediums). I don't know how accurate my interpretation of what impressionism aims to capture is but I've always sort of admired the ability to capture stuff like that via paintings, even if I am someone who values close attention to accurate detail anyways, your shell painting looks nice! I think your placement of colors serves it well
Hearing you talk about how your appreciation of impressionism has changed made me really happy. We are all human and we all change. We are exposed to things in different parts of our lives and what is common is new to others. Talking about that change in perspective is beautiful and exciting.
I'm not real smart either, but I always thought of Impressionism like being about a moment in time and its emotional impact and the movement of light. Like those women in the poppy field by Monet, with the feeling of the fresh wind and the spring sunshine and the dresses blowing in the wind, and the impression being more like what stays in your brain afterwards rather than the actual realistic depiction of the moment. I love your squid!
I'm just gonna add on to everyone saying they want to know you in real life! You sound hilarious and wonderful on top of your art being so fun. Don't change
I honestly love your voice overs because it's like listening to myself talk. Like you are so me and that's why i like your videos, not because I'm egotistical, but because it's nice to see someone with a similar thought process to me. But being honest I think we are all a little bit egotistical and I was definitely lying earlier
I'm always so delighted by your videos! I think your, ahem, *impression* of impressionism is much more accurate than Wikipedia. I absolutely love your style of art and how it translates across the mediums you use. Can't wait to see what you make next
Woah!! The shell is bootiful!! Never worry about upsetting or offending you just be you! It’s your channel! You’re hilarious and consistently so! Thank you for making the content it’s very inspiring. ❤

😂😂😂 you are funny. Reminds me of myself when I just be talking and be wrong. I swear I just keep thinking about it. I love your work and use of colors. Actually inspired me to use gouache more. Thankssss
I think what you’re trying to do with suggestive brush strokes is totally in the vibe of Impressionism, and if anybody would be against subscribing to hard and fast rules of labeling a style accurately, it would be The Impressionists 😉 so you’re in the clear! LOVE these paintings, especially the magical shell! 💛
I’m with everyone else that your personality and voiceovers are everything! I feel like we have the same sense of humor too so I just super vibe! Anywho spooky season is around the corner and I would loooove to see spooky things 🦇🎃🪦💀
I never thought I can relate to someone as much as I did with you 😂 anyway omg I can't believe I never came across your channel before your art is just breathtaking! Not only the final piece but I love your process 🥰
Your commentary had me laughing, I really look forward to your videos they're very entertaining. You make me want to use a flat brush on round objects even though I don't understand how you do it. Not an art major but I took an art history class and I would say your shell is somewhere in the rhelm of impressionism because of the expressive brushstrokes and color choices.
First video I watched from you, and I genuinely laughed. You are so relatable and funny!! Also your artsyle is sooooo lovely to look at, you're a very skillful artsit:)) definitely subscribing
9:08 I would have loved to go to an exhibit like that, i love impressionist work and ive never been to the national art gallery of canada (looks amazing even just on the outside!) and you shell is gorgeous, lovely colours 🥰
We are very lucky to live so close to it, my mom has a pass😁 when you go, check online the exhibitions will be on thier website and you can go for one you will really enjoy. I once went to one fully focused on Gustave Dore and it was so cool I loved it
not in canada any more, been in scotland now for 20 years, but if hubby and i go back, a road trip out there is def in order. there is so much of my home country i do want to show him, hopefully we do go back to visit for a few weeks some day (if ticket prices ever get back to 'normal' levels lol
Ooh I love your art. I never went to art school either but some of us simply have a good eye for what we are seeing and can translate that pretty accurately. That’s when you know it’s a gift and not just a taught skill. I saw several of your thumbnails and am very excited to explore more of your videos when I have time, but didn’t see any sketchbook tours.. are you planning on doing any? Keep up the good work anyway, I love your art and colour choices ❤!
I don’t believe there are any hard and fast rules when it comes to classifying Art. Art is continually evolving - and should. You love an art style, and it inspires you to incorporate elements of it and it grows into your style! I love watching you create your art and I can certainly see elements of your work that is inspired by an impressionistic style. Looking at the various artists I love to follow, it appears that many of my favorites did not go to art school and their art is learned through experiment, practice and intuition….and often quite unique. Art is about expression, and too often I hear artists talk about the struggle to break away from their art education. Taught to think of their art as right or wrong, taught rules, but not how to move beyond them. I’ve seen artists whose work was amazing, feel compelled to go to art school because they feared their work may be inferior because they didn’t have the degree to go with it, only to be told at school that their art was wrong, too commercial, naive etc and watch them attempt to ‘fit in’ instead of learning to experiment with various styles and techniques, ultimately they loose the love for their craft. There is value in learning to copy - it’s essentially how many of the great artists in history learned, and then they learned to break the rules. Essentially how impressionistic painters developed. Early impressionistic painters like Monet and Degas were considered revolutionary and criticized by the conventional painters and writers of the time. Their work was considered unfinished. Picasso experimented with many styles, including realism, and pushed his impressionistic style into cubism and beyond. He started art school but dropped out, finding it too stifling. I’m not sure if his work would have been so extraordinary if he had continued to try fit himself into art school. Don’t get me wrong, there is value in learning theory, techniques etc, just not convinced that school is the only way to learn these, and I think the art schools that nurture individuality are few and far between. In the past many artists learned through mentorship…now a days the access to information via the internet and social media, gives us the opportunity to be mentored by and exposed to so many artists! Your art brings pleasure and has value, just as does an art museum or gallery.
Look up the octopus lady’s video on the magnapina squid. It’s sooooo crazy! Also, strange facts about anglerfish really creep me out. But I love learning about them.
the humboid squid is a type of giant squid that turns bright red before attacking and it also hunts in packs! the packs can include a couple of hundred individuals!
kkkkkkkk im learning to paint by myself and the best part of the video (dont get me wrong) is the small talk . for real, is so relaxing and i was laughing through the whole video. i wish i was fkn talent like this
I'm going to say it: please don't ever change. I love your humour and video format. I honestly wish I had a friend like you lol...

Both.

Thank you! I will do a sketchbook tour soon for sure!
I loved this voiceover AND the shell?! Amazing!
Thank you!
Great video. I also learned some things about squids that I never knew before
I don't know how I just discovered you, but I subscribed 2 minutes in because you are so entertaining. I'm actually cackling out loud.
Thank you so much 😄

Look up the octopus lady’s video on the magnapina squid. It’s sooooo crazy! Also, strange facts about anglerfish really creep me out. But I love learning about them.
