People often ask me to do a 'buffet busting' challenge, but they're often difficult to film as a one-man-band, with all the sitting and standing haha! I saw this leaderboard style challenge at One Plus Chinese Restaurant, and as soon as I realised the food was on a conveyor belt, I jumped at the chance to try and take top spot! I have lived in China for almost 4 years now and fell in love with Hot Pot. I was of course taught by friends how to do Hot Pot the right way. I have always wondered how someone would react to eating Hot Pot who has no experience or knowledge about it. This was an absolute joy to watch.
as a person of chinese background I really do applaud you for stepping out of your comfort zone and packing away all that stuff you don't even know ... very brave. Round of applause! I've also never seen conveyor belt hot pot before very gimmicky. not sure if I would ever eat there but hey it's the experience that matters. Kudos to you!
The “soggy frittatas” you ate were actually fried tofu puffs, one of my favourites for doing hot pot! Need to be careful to squish some of the broth out of those before you try to eat them though or you’ll be in danger of having just a big stream of boiling soup in your mouth when you bite into them! 🥵 Oh and the monster munch looking things were lotus roots 😄

Poor guy missed out on the custom sauces you can dip your food in. The soup is ok on it's own but it will get eventually diluted especially with the amount ingredients he added.
I lived 2 years in China, and you don’t usually load up the hot pot bowls with that much food 🙂 It’s usually half broth, half food! The vegetable you didn’t recognise was lotus root - one of my favourites. It tastes like ginger, but milder 🙂
I love hotpot! So many textures and a rich, flavourful broth. It's great drinking food. Those monster munch thingys were lotus root which is common in Oriental and Indian cuisine. I think those soggy frittata things were either fried tofu or fish cakes. 38 plates is quite an achievement so well done Beard! Hoping to see a dim sum or dumpling challenge in the future.
Good on ya for getting in out of your comfort zone! I had some traditional DIY Korean bbq before and the server had to show me step by step how to cook everything. Still amazing though.

I went to a Chinese all you can eat place and while waiting to be seated a worker rolls in a trolley full of Asda smart price cola and lemonade through the front door. They were charging £3 a glass too.
@@edubois87a You ever see someone drink pickle juice? You know how much salt is in there? But I agree it might've gotten very spicy,salty after several broth refills, but they could've supplemented with broth along with the hot water so it retains the same flavor and volume.
@@aaronloiselle7404 Because i know many people, asians included, that wouldn't be willing to put many of that traditional chinese ingredients in their hot pot, let alone their mouths. I'm also an American born Chinese, so I don't mind some spam and hotdog every once in a while ha.
The one with all the holes is lotus root, it's pretty decent oh and the thing that tasted like squid is tripe / cow stomach. Hotpot isn't normally a sushi belt style thing (I did try a skewer version in Beijing which was interesting) and you can usually get sides, rice, make your own sauces etc.
@Joey The "NINO" Burrito idk but they are very big on educate specially when it’s food related. I think Japanese culture especially but most Asian cultures have their own unique tendencies when it comes to properly eating. As an outsider it’s very hard to keep up with all of them honestly!
I went to my first hotpot recently and it was much fun. I had seen many Mike Chen videos in the past so I had a better time taking care of my pot than Beard did, but I was inspired to try out the spam and it was actually quite good.

This is giving me flashbacks when my friends wanted to hit up ayce hot pot but they tapped out after ordering way too much and I finished all of it by myself

Usually in Japan also, they cook that stuff at these similar looking restaurants, where you grab food from the "belt.", or "cash desk" looking place. What ever that is in English :D To me this restaurant's concept isn't very promising, or long-lasting as you have to cook the stuff by yourself lol. And isn't fast as it seems to be complicated in case of waiter having to introduce yourself to the concept at first... Time-wasting too. Doesn't work at least in Europe.
The concept is that its a communal and social activity, great for getting together with friends and family. Usually, people dont go to eat hotpot by themselves. This is a common meal in asian culture, and its really fun when done properly!

Circular veggies with the holes in it = lotus root "Velcro" = Tripe aka Beef stomach With hot pot you generally want to have a rolling simmer, it will cook things much faster and reduce the broth for better flavor. You beasted this challenge though man, love your videos!

Yea, there's this place in WI called the Prime Quarter where you cook you own steak on a grill. It's great and very reasonable. But, you may want to bring a change of clothes...it gets very hot around the fire! 😁
I like this guy. Seems like he’d be a blast to hang out with. Dude, he should drink while doing these challenges. Whenever I drink and/or smoke I can eat a lot. Probably not as much as him, but my friends have told me I should do food challenges.

Like ginger is definitely not how I would describe the taste of lotus root. I've always found it more akin to carrot, at least when it's cooked.

At about 5 mins, the big square beige coloured things are tofu I believe and the thing afterwards (like monster munch) was lotus root.

I like this guy. Seems like he’d be a blast to hang out with. Dude, he should drink while doing these challenges. Whenever I drink and/or smoke I can eat a lot. Probably not as much as him, but my friends have told me I should do food challenges.
