Awesome work Lau. Thanks for sharing all of your modifications with us all.
Thank you. Hopefully it can help or give ideas to people. 😊
@@LauMagroTheFrenchKOInection yes that’s what it’s all about. I am installing all my solar now and then will get started on building my pond. That’s why I am watching anything related koi right now. Thanks so much. 👍👀🎊
@@dpistone10 Fabulous. Keep me updated on your build. Really interested
@@LauMagroTheFrenchKOInection I was thinking that I better learn as much as possible now. The solar will take me about 3 to 5 months with permits here in California before it’s installed. So I have a ways to go but using this time to learn as much as possible.
@@dpistone10 what are the solar exactly?
Hi Lau your pool and koi are looking amazing. Your koi really look like they have grown loads .Looks like your doing everything right 👍👍👍
Thank you Craig, your message has made me happy. Yes the koi have grown quite a lot since april/may. I am quite pleased. The work is paying off :-)
Great idea with the net Lau the pond is looking really good 👍
Thanks Sam, so much easier with the vertical net. Hope you are doing well.
Don't you ever take a break, such a busy bee. So much better with the vertical net.
haha you know what it's like when you build a new pond :-)
Yes the vertical net is so much better, really chuffed, I should have done that straight away
The swept elbows and the new way of cleaning the bottom drain is definitely something to consider with my build, thanks for the idea. Happy pounding and Bob's your uncle!
Hi, Glad it can give you ideas. We're all here to help each other and give each other ideas.
Hi Lau, great idea with the net.. We could see the delight in your face after it had been fitted.. 😉👍
Hi Andy, I have been thinking about it for a while, I dont know why I didnt do it earlier. So much better, like you, the net on the top of the pond is grrrr. hated it. Hope you are getting better.
Nice touch Lau, good thinking.
So much easier! Really makes my life easier and it made me happy once that net was off
Great idea with the net Lau.
Thanks Tony, so much easier now :-)
Hi Lau hope all is well fab idea with the net looks alot better than having on top the pond, love your new chagoi it's a beautiful colour ,great work on the bottom drain should be alot easier take care x
Hi Katrina, thank you. 100 times better, so much easier and so quick to roll it up and down if needed. I am so pleased. Yes the baby chag is looking nice. So pleased with him, his ginrin is getting stronger, even has it on his belly, and he is gaining weight. The tail tube for me was my concern, nut it's getting thicker so I think he will be fine.
Good idea with net. Cheers lau👍
Thanks Richard. The net has made my life easier. Hope you are well
Pond is looking really good, always looking to improve keep up the good work thanks pete
Thanks a lot Pete. I am getting there 😊
Nice job Lau. The net idea was good. Keeps it all nice and tidy.
So much better Jim, it was really starting to irritate me.
Great job Lau 👏 you make it look so easy, pond looks fabulous 👌
Thank you Steven, and thanks for the nice comment. The pond is getting there..
Liking the net up that way it looks far better have a good week Lau
Thank you Martyn. So much easier and I can see my fish again 😊 have a nice weekend too.
Hi lau you have been busy like the update on the bottom drain I must say the retro drains really work well I am impressed with mine .
Like the nets fish are looking mint also 👍🏼👍🏼
Hi Mike and thank you. Yeah a little bit every weekend and I should be fully ready for the winter.
Yeah bottom drains are great, aren't they.
The net is so practical like that Mike, I hated it on the pond.
some great updates to the pond there. also love the mug
Thank you. That's very kind. Yeah the mug from Leon is really cool 😊
Your very handy lau for a lady I must say!!!! Class work and I love that mug!!!!!!!!
Thank you Lee. Means a lot. Anything and practical is what I like. That net was doing my head in. Yeah the magic mug is so cool :-) Hope you are doing ok.
Great modification on the net Lau. Your koi are looking amazing, and 10 times better without the net across the top of the pond. Keep up the good work, and take care, Terry.
Thank you Terry, means a lot. I am quite pleased with the net, so much easier and so quick to roll up and down. And we cant see it from the garden, only when we get close. I am quite pleased with the koi overal condition, makes me feel at ease to enter the winter period.
Great idea Lau, looks so much better than having the net over the water, and so easy to roll up.... Cheers 👍
Hello you two! Yes most definitely. I was getting really annoyed with the net on the top. And it's nice as we cant see it when we are iin the garden. Only when weget closer.
That vertical net is a great idea 👍
Hope you're well.
Stay safe.
Really practical. Really pleased. Don't know why I didnt do that before.
Hope you are all well.

Just replied to your other message 😉
Great vid Lau love the net idea may have to use that when I get my roof on, bring on next season 😀
Hi, how are you doing? I miss your videos! Hope you are well. Yes it looks like the vertical net is a winner with people who havea a pergola :-) I am so much happier than having that net on the top of the pond :-)
Great modification 👍😊. You’re like a one woman building firm, bet there isn’t much you can’t do🤣😂😉. Vertical nets look soooooo much better, think I might have to copy👍😊. Your set up is looking really great and fish all look happy, especially that chagoi 😊👍. Keep up the h
Good work👍🈲🐟😊
Hi Phil, it's funny because when I was putting the net, I actually thought about you and Danny (Danny's koi pond) as we have pond and pergola. The net is so much better and I can't see it until I get closed to it. It's really practical.
Trust me, there is a lot.i cannot do... Wish I could do block work. I can build a little wall but wouldn't be able to build a pond.
Hi Lau, you are the pipe work guru, love the idea with the net, I may well pinch your idea. Dave Koikarma.
:-) I love going pipe work, yet when I built the pond, it was what I was dreading the most! Looks like a few people will also do the vertical nbet, thats what we do, learn from each other and get ideas from each other.
@@LauMagroTheFrenchKOInection absolutely your vids are always informative and fun to watch, a massive well done from Koikarma.👍👍👍👍

Great idea with the roll up Net Lau
Simple and totally effective 👍👍👍
Thanks Assim, definitely, this has made my life so much easier and I can see my fish now :-)
Great idea. I’ve seen the exploit the tiniest of gaps to get fish! Even seen them stuck under a net over the top of the pond.
Hi Matt, yeah one of my friends had that too, the fish jumped and went through the net and then got stuck on the top of the net. That was always a worry for me, so I much prefer the vertical net now :-)
Brilliant work mate glad you like your new mug 😄
The pipe work will be so much easier and should help water flow having swept bends.
Love all your winter prep with the pollycarb screens and the roll away net is a brilliant idea 👌👍
Ps love the gin rin on the new chag 😍😍😍
Thank you so much again for the mug Special Man. It's all coming together. I actually love the pond now, it looks like a garden center pond :-)
The ginrin on the new chag is really coming through, strong than when I first got him. He is eating nicely now, is gaining weight, I can see it on the tail tube which was my biggest concern so he can pas the winter nicely. Love him, he is friendly too.
@@LauMagroTheFrenchKOInection awesome mate 😊😊
Love that idea with the net. May pinch that next year when I take my covers off
Hi Danny, it makes it so much easier, it's much nicer for me too. And yeah, with your pond and your pergola, you coukd actually put a net all the way around. Fixed it at the back and 3 sides that you can roll up and down. I feel so much better about the pond now, that net was getting on my nerves
You are a busy lady Lau do you never stop hahah but it’s all improvements good luck
hahaha, it's still a new pond (only 6 months old) and had so much to do... I need to keep busy :-) Makes me happy
Hi ya Lau great idea with the pond net and the the pipe work you did was well neat fair play 👍🤣
Thank you. The net makes everyting easy again
Those larger sweeping elbows on the bottom drain return line should make a big difference to the water flow back to your filters and remove more debris. I also like the simplicity of you net system. Well done .
Thank you :-) If anything, I think it will be less pressure on the pump. Which is whay I did it. The net is so much easier... at last.. dont know why I didnt do it sooner. Thank you for watching and commenting !
Nice work 💪💪👌👌
Thank you :-)
great job love the net idea
Thank you Alan, hope all is well your end.
I dont know why I havent done the net earlier as it has made my life so much easier.
Brilliant idea with the net front lau 👍🏻
Thank you, much easier now
Great ideas Lau, I may pinch your bottom drain plan for my pond next year. Dare I say, “you look good in fishnet” sorry!😂😂😂
Hope it didn’t smell to much. I do love a couple of your fish the tancho Showa and the Goromo are awesome. Stay safe and well 👍🏻
Hi Steven, yeah I realised after that I had made a fool of myself being caught in the net hahaha - oh well :-)
Yeah the retro bottom drain works perfect. I had no issue before but I think it will help the pump too by having swept elbows.
Thank you for the comment about my fish, they are two of my favorite too. The tancho showa is fairly new but is developping nicely.
`````love the ideal with the net pond is looking good
Hi, thank you. It has been amazing last summer and autumn. Definitely helped to keep predators away.
You should come and do my pipe work you make everything look so easy 👍
It's funny, I was dreading it when I first built the pond, it's in fact what I loved the most probably
Great video Lau 👍🏻 will you do the same next to the bit you said you was going to cover off the filter house? ( your filming spot?). Pond and fish look amazing as always 😍 that winter cover back drop really makes it all beautiful. I think that art work should stay up 👍🏻all the best, Tel 😊🙏🏻😊
Hi Tel, thank you for the kind comment. Fish are really good at the moment, which helps as we come in the winter. I am planning something different to separate the pond to the filter house 😉 just ordered what I finally decided to do. I will leave the back drop permanently. And the left side I think for the summer. But will open the door to the shower so air can circulate nicely.
Great job lau 👍
Thanks Dave :-) Much easier now
Great job lau, I can see the vertical net idea being copied 😬. You're a trend setter 👍
Hi Andy, hopefully it will help people, so much easier and practical. I feel better now :-) I really hated it.
Can you see the deference having a bottom drain , should be able to take away all the muck build up 👍 have you had problems with herons , poxy things , they cleared my neighbours pond out the other year , lucky the dogs seem to keep them away from mine ,
Hi, have always had a retro bottom drain and I can say that my pond floor is spotless. No poo and no detritus. But its only a 6 months old pond.
We have foxes, they have taken out my big Matsukawabake and taken her head of. Herons dont come near as I have the roof so they cant see them, and same as you, we have the dogs.
@@LauMagroTheFrenchKOInection blimey foxes , air rifle springs to mind
@@MyPhilw It was a great shame, I loved that koi, but it's wildlife. I should have protected the pond before :-(
@@LauMagroTheFrenchKOInection yea one of those things , but still heartbreaking mate
So is that pump a self priming pump? I have to pump water to my pump then put on the bottom drain quickly once iv got the siphon going if i ever swap piping or clean the retro drain. My ea 10000 vari n oase 12000 wont prime themselves despite being lower than the pond surface. Great idea with the net 👍🐟
Hi Rich, no, I have to prime it. It's easy, the pipe with the retro bottom drain is full up with water. I fill up the pipe with the that goes to the non return valve. Re-attach the pipes with the rubber connection. And I turn the pump on, there is a bit of air but very little. You can see on the video, it takes 30 sec for the air to disappear.
@@LauMagroTheFrenchKOInection Ahh im on flexi so i have to prime it with a spare pump then attach the bottom drain under water lol. The second best way to do it after a gravity fed system. Our set ups aren't gravity, no pumps in the pond so maybe u cud say they are siphon fed ponds? Not seen many of them 👍🐟
@@richd-koi If remember rightly, you have your bottom drain, andd your flexi pipe goes through the wall of your garage and pump is in the garage? You can do the same as me. but its probably a little bit more difficult but feasible. You could fill up the flexi pipe with your garden hose. Once it's full, you plug it immediately to the pump and put the pump on. You will end up with water a bit on the floor but you could try.
@@LauMagroTheFrenchKOInection my pipe goes over the top copings and then yes into my garage to the pump. Its fine using a spare pump just thought id ask how u do it. Oh no that method wud be a nightmare in my garage. Take care 👍🐟
Great idea with the net hope you don’t mind me copying it! ( just subbed 😀)
Hi Ian, there is no copyright on my vertical net 😁 we re all here to help each other and get idea from each other. So if it helps you, then I am happy 😁
Hi, what is the purpose of the white clear thing on your pipework from bottom drain
Hi, sorry for the late reply, I didnt get any notification for your message. It is a non-return valve. If I have a powercut, the water from the filters (EazyPod, Multibay and moving bed) would never go back in the pond by siphon
Neat net idea Lau 👍👍👍Must be nice to easily take the bottom drain out to clean. How do you when when it’s time to clean it?
Thank you Sid. I can see the airflow being reduced on the retro bottom drain as it's a rubber membrane, so I know it's time to clean it. I have done it twice in 6 months now.
Thanks Lau, do you mean the bubbles you see in that bubble pipe at 19:40? I find this very interesting. Will you do a clip on this later on? Merci 🙏
@@KoiRun50 Sorry Sid, I am getting confused. Bubble pipe? at 19:40 was the end of my video.
Opps sorry to confused you. It's at 10:09
@@KoiRun50 oh, the air bubbles in the non return valve is because I cut the pipes to fit the new swept bends so I had to prime the pump again. There was a bit of air inside and then it goes.
Hi Lau, just subscribed to your Chanel 👍🏼
I have a question. I run the same retro bottom drain as you, which I absolutely love. However, I still have the pump (striped out of its cage) on the pond floor which I would love to re-locate out of the pond (like yours) next year. I was always told that if I ever wanted to do this, I would have to drill through the side of the pond (below water level) and that I could not go “up and over” the side - like you have. But you seem to have done what I want to do? Unless I’m missing something? Any tips for this in regards air locks etc? Sorry for the long post and appreciate any advice.
P.S net is amazing 👍🏼
Hi, sorry for the late reply, didn't see the notification. So as you have seen, yes you can have the pump outside, not a problem. But you will need to prime the pump. So basically you need to fill the pipes with water so the pump starts working with water and don't suck air. It makes a few gurgling noise at the beginning and then it goes. Make sure you add a gate valve before the pump so you can isolate the pump if needed. Also a non return valve if you can. Of course a ball valve after going to your filter. If you look at my early video when I installed the eazypod, I think I explained it well.
@@LauMagroTheFrenchKOInection thank you Lau… i appreciate the reply, I will have a look through your profile and find the video 🙂
Great job Lau,can I ask where you got the stickers on the polycarbonate and would you have a link?
Hi, thank you. if you look two or 3 videos ago when I did it, all the links are in the decription. Ebay :-)
Great thanks for the links.
@Preacher Thnaks for doing that, I couldnt do it on my mobile.
Hi great job, can I ask do you have any issues with the retro bottom drain clogging. Thanks for sharing. Love the idea of how you’ve enclosed the sides and the front.
Thank you Neil.
The bottom drain never clogged up no. But then the pond is new (6 months) and there is no algea at the bottom. Have you got one that clogs up?
@@LauMagroTheFrenchKOInection hi yes , the thing is my pond has a lot of leaves that get into the pond even though there’s a net over. I only noticed as when I cleaned my eazy pod the flow wasn’t great. Plus my hoover packed in which hasn’t helped. Thank you again love the set up.
@@StokeKoiAdventures are you pump fed or gravity?
@@LauMagroTheFrenchKOInection pump fed unfortunately
@@StokeKoiAdventures that's ok, mine is pump fed too but with the pump outside the pond. Works well. So if you are pump fed, you might have less flow as leaves get through the pump and probably reduce the speed of your impeller rather than the retro bottom drain being clogged up?
Great vid Lau, I’ve been thinking about fitting a retro but not sure how effective they are. Are they effective? And is that like a non return valve you have on it as well ?
Hi Darren, I am super happy with mine and they are not intrusive at all. Works well with the aerated membrane. I got it from Ecofiltration. I got my non return valve from there too. It's a 2 inch one.
@@LauMagroTheFrenchKOInection Thats great thanks a lot u have convinced me now. Keep up the great work and the pond is looking great 👍
@@darrenmarchese7182 thanks Darren. Means a lot.
Hi Lau , great work on the pond , can i just ask when you prime the pump from the drain do you just have that little bit of water from the 1 way valve to the slide valve ? Is the 1 way valve pointing with the flapper inside facing towards the pump? Hope that makes sense x
Hi Mark, yes, when I first primed the pump, or whenever I have to do it again, I make sure that the bottom drain pipe is full up with water. I close the gate valve which is always a good thing to have if you need to isolate the pump, I filled up the pipe where the swept elbows are. There was a tiny bit of air inside, but quickly went as you saw on the video.
For the non return valve, I use it vertically - so the flap gets pushed down when the water travels from the bottom drain towards the pump. when I stop the pump, the flap closes upwards, which stoped the water from going back in the pond. Hope that makes sense.
@@LauMagroTheFrenchKOInection thanks great!!
Nice vid my friend. I always sence that PVC glue smell every time I see a glueing vid, is that normal? Did you know you can reuse PVC fillings with a heat gun and some pliers? I might make a vid about that in the future. Take care!
yes I have been saving some fittings I had and managed to remove the elbow :-)
Take care = Hope the temperatures are not too bad yet where you are
Hello my French lady how do u find your retrofit bottom drain as I have pump with cage in my pond I could not do a proper bottom drain line but seen so many people now fitting retrofit bottom drains are they really worth £99
Absolute do not regret having a pump fed system due to the bottom drain. I litturally have no poo on the floor. My pond is small, 3m x 1.80m but if it was bigger, I would have 2 retro drain put on 2 pumps and on two filter system. I do like the one I have as it's a rubber membrane, and not a ring, so koi have less chance to injure themselves. I bought mine at EcoFiltration www.eco-filtration.co.uk/product/aerated-rubber-membrane-weighted-suction-dome-plate/
and link for the pipework www.eco-filtration.co.uk/product/aerated-weighted-suction-dome-low-profile-feed-kit/
Hi mate how do you find your retro bottom drain does it collect all the crap at the bottom Gaz
Hi Gaz, the retro bottom drain is fantastic for me. All depends what size pond you have but most of all how much you are pulling from it. What size pond have you got? Shape? How much water are you intending to pull as this all depends on your filter too.
My pond is 1500gallon rectangle
@@garyhumphries4979 what filter have you got and how much are you intending to pull?
Is this ran off a pump or gravity fed??
Hi, all my system is pump fed, on both side. The pump for the main filters is outside the pond. The pump for the shower and Tempest is inside the pond.
Clever girl
Thank you Tony. Anything to make my life easier 😉
You cheat, that's not real grass lol 😁, pipework should give better flow, always tinkering to be done on the pond Lau 👍., now it's built, bet you can't wait for spring to come round.
haha anything to make my life easier. With the dogs, fake grass is a must! Easy to clean, dogs dont make a mess, they never dig, no patches of burn grass, not muddy patches in winter, a must! :-)
I think the swept bends are putting less pressure on the pomp. At the same speed, the watt comsumption is less by 10. So it has helped :-)
