- How to build a timber sleeper pond.
Hi it's Lee from the Japanese water gardens. In this video I am going to explain how you can construct a garden pond for goldfish or small Koi from timber sleepers.
I will be explaining how to easily install a simple pump UV and filtration system.
I have a few tips that you can implement that will help make your finished pond look very professional.
Along the way I will point out some common mistakes that people make so hopefully you can avoid them.
I will take you through all the steps including planning the pond, building up the walls, fitting the liner and choosing plants. It even covers filling the pond and stocking it with fish.
Timber ponds are easy to construct and cost-effective. They are extremely popular at the moment and can be built in a variety of styles to almost any dimensions. Timber built ponds are a great choice for the DIYer who lacks the skills to build a brickwork construction, or for someone who is looking for a pond that is quick to build.
There is a lot of very useful information in here about pond building in general so I am sure everyone will find it of interest.

Fantastically informative video. I would like to create a similar design to this, but also line the smaller section with pond liner and use it as a wetland/bog filter. Can you suggest "double ended" bulkhead fittings which would work for this purpose?
You can use normal tank connector. Exactly like in this video. Just put one each side. Should work perfectly well.
This is one of the clearest videos showing quickly, in detail how to do this. Do you need to have the concrete base? I have read that a gravel base will do, I think that this will be easier and cheaper.Thanks for the helpful video.
The concrete is to form a collar that will not allow the soil to fall in. If your not going into the ground then probably gravel might be ok. But cheap enough for concrete and firm.

Great video. I’d love to have some advice on laying a liner to an L shape pond like this. I’m concerned it’s going to look a awful. Is there a good folding method to minimise folds and creases?
No special technique. It's always going to require folds and creases to do a liner like this. Plenty of extra material and carefully folding.
So I am just about to install a kockney koi skimmer box on my pond just wondering how best to install it. The skimmer box is around 1 inch above the main water level on my pond. well I hope it is the pond seems to be level know. So what advise would you give about fitting a skimmer ? the skimmer seems to be a 1/4 above what will be the water level. I in vision the water level of the pond will be about 1 inch below the top of the sleepers. Above that will be a capping piece of wood which is about 50mm in thickness.

This is the best sleeper pond 'how to' video I've come across - thank you! One question - you did not mention installing rebar through the sleepers then into the concrete base/ground? is this because the sleepers stacked on flat side construction is sturdy enough? I'm planning to expand the sunk 'trough pond' in the middle of patio area - by cutting out some patio slabs, digging out the trough, and make the space bigger/deeper. The Patio is flat - could I just place the 1st row of sleepers directly on patio without pouring concrete? I can drill rebar into the patio and into the ground to make things more stable? Thank you. Yes the rebar would add extra strength. Especially if your building up several feet.
Hi Lee, I have reclaimed railroad ties treated with creosote. I was going to use them for my pond structure. My idea was to use the ties to create the rectangle and then line it inside with ply wood, insulation, underlayment, and then the pond liner. Do you think the pond will be safe and not get effected by the creosote railway ties? Love your videos, got me inspired to build my first pond.
I don't think it be a problem. They must be well weathered by now. Don't let them sit in the water though.

Any rubber liner is good. Rubber not pvc

Most aquatic shops will keep them. They are normally kockney koi ones.

i am building a pond out of new railway sleepers, for koi carp, not started yet as still watching and picking up tips before i start.
Any tips? How deep to dig down or can you just build sleepers up to 4ft out of the ground?
I've been told nexus is the only filter to go for?
Definitely dig down too. Bottom drain is a must. Nexus are good. But drum filter is better.

Hello How did you fit return pipes did you put holes in wood for return pipes and how did you fit them ?
They are cut using a circular saw. Slots. Of after another.
need help have pond one air pump fitting 18mm I need to adapt to 8mm air pipe any ideas? The pump came with a rubber tube that is about 18mm but can not seem to find a fitting for my large air stone that has a 8mm pipe.3
Just use sleeves made up from hose of different sizes. Push them inside and tape up with electric tape.

Yes so long as it can be level and firmed up it should be fine.

The cost of the sleepers has increased somewhat particularly since the start of the pandemic. However if you shop around you can purchase them still at reasonable prices.
