You should compare Apples with Apples, either all wagons, all hatches or all crossover SUVs.
Having said that, Ford is the only option for me, best engine and driving dynamics and in my opinion the best looking by far.
If you want to go off-road, you do so regularly and said roads are more challenging than a simple sand road then don’t mess about with a car or “crossover SUV nonsense” they’re not the correct tools for the job, rather get yourself something like a Ranger, Hilux or a Wrangler.
I laugh my head off when I see people talking about these car’s “off-road” capabilities... the AWD when available in cars like those is meant for added traction on the road in places where there’s lots of snow or ice on the roads in winter, it doesn’t mean they’re suddenly meant to be an actual off-roader.
The Subaru is the most off-road worthy here but the golf and the focus are just styling packs for the standard vehicles, you can’t even call them crossover SUVs because they’re just jacked up hatchbacks with rugged styling packs.

For me it's the Ford Focus. ..

Why are you comparing an Alltrak against a Focus hatch and not the wagon or an estate as we call it in the UK.

    • @leoesposito8762

Ford here does not have a focus wagon in this class.

@@leoesposito8762 Well they do have a Active wagon

@@bjornolsson9383 In Australia, the only wagon/estate available was the ST Line. This has now been removed and so only Hatch version is available. I’m guessing the higher-ups at Ford thought they didn’t need to bring out the Active wagon in Australia.

The Volkswagen Golf Alltrack would be my pick, looks like a really functional, comfortable vehicle.

You can drop the trunk floor of the Alltrack by several additional inches making an already generous boot space even more cavernous. Most people don't even know about it, and I never see it mentioned in the reviews.

Focus for me. I haven't driven a non forced induction Subaru I've liked. And Golfs....no doubt about the premium part but the reliability of their drive-train lets them down.

As I'm in no hurry to go anywhere it's the XV for me. And it has that proper spare wheel! Golf is a nice enough car but VW are a dispicable company and after sales 'service' is appalling (from experience).

Focus is always the best car. Ford should consider AWD system on option for active model at least.

The only thing i find personally with the focus of the industry being very much SUV and tall Utes is that if you happen to be in a wheelchair, getting into the higher positioned car seats can at best be substantially more difficult and at worst be impossibly for someone such as myself to get into :( Its a shame as I always loved the idea of having the high driving position as my body happens to be a bit small and squished :'( at the moment I am looking at getting one of the last Aussie Utes as it allows me to get in the driving position then use a crane type thing to lift the wheelchair into the tray, preferably with a canopy that opens and closes during that process but this style of ute are no longer being made, they are all super high riding :(

From what I know the Focus Active was never marketed neither as a SUV nor in any other way "pretended" to be one... so I guess no need to be constantly measured by any SUV standards as it's done in this review. I hope you won't take for a "review" a hatchback and compare it to a station wagon and criticise it for having a smaller boot space for example.

isn't the VW almost $10k more expensive than the other 2 as tested? #VWadvice.com.au
Also no mention of the safety tech on a family car review?

The Golf looks boring tbh. Also try to compare SW body styles for all cars next time. Now it just feels like VW slipped some dollar bills under the table for this ‘review’.

It seems moto journos have decided to hate on CVT and nothing is going to change that.
I had one and it was totally fine. You don't buy these cars to race around the place.
As for the noise; you expect a car to make more noise when you accelerate hard. I for one really don't care as long as it isn't ridiculously loud.
And what a absurd conclusion. The VW is more of an SUV than the XV? GMAFB. Anyway it should have been up against the Outback, not the XV.
I'm guessing VW sponsored this video.
Love the front of the Ford though. Sort of an Aston clone and very pretty.
