These videos are gold for anyone learning to program beats. Ethan is the Man! Thanks for the lessons. They are extremely well developed, easy to understand, and practical. You'll be programming classic beats in an hour of free video.
Awesome videos! Thank you so much for sharing these online, your use of visual aids is so helpful. I never thought of rhythm as a spiral before but seeing that one picture makes so much sense. You have a great way of teaching sound visually.
you're such a good educator! love your chilled vibe. also good speed, not too slow, not too fast. some other, more "professional" youtube channels are way too fast, do not make any breaks between sentences, hastily. this on the other hand feels natural to me. thanks a lot!
Awesome series! For someone like myself who has zero musical training, your ability to articulate these concepts with practical examples (& without overcomplicating with theory) is invaluable.
thank you SO much for this!! i feel so lost with drum production and now i'm like oh shit i can learn this ☺️ Question: on the drum patterns google sheet - what's the difference between amen brother pt 1 and 2?
BRO I LOVE UR VIDEOS MAN UR way of talking and teaching is fucking top class! made me understand shit i couldn't reealy grasp b4 :) any way thanks for ur videos keep on doing what ur doing , love from south west austraya mate :)
Time unit box system! I am really into 3/4 time, Waltzes and polkas and am a big fan of Beirut, DeVotchka and if it has 3/4 time I usually gravitate toward it. How does that fit into the time unit box system?
simply paint the bold painted divider after three boxes as it marks the down beat, or ignore the divider or ... think outside the box, put the check marks wherever ;)
Basically you are correct, but you seem to have missed how he is counting: As he explains in the video he is counting in half-time to make the 16th notes easier to count. So his first '3' is the '2' in traditional counting and the next '3' is the '4' in traditional counting. I hope this helps you. Let meknowif you have more questions. 🙂 Andi
Yeah I was confused in the second video till I watched this first video and he explained the half time counting. Without that fact it is confusing. Kinda wish he stayed with the 1e+a 16 note counting.

Ethan is a great teacher and these videos are wonderful, but did he just suggest clapping on the 3 for blues and rock? Just no, dude. Also, he calls beat 3 the backbeat, but I've always heard beats 2 and 4 labeled as the backbeats (and where you clap).
Stopped the video at that minute to say aw hell no you didn't, but then had to check myself for a second as he was counting in half time. The 2 & 4 become the 3 & 7
@@ravensmitten5107 & @obliviousdude9437 Yeah, I see his explanation. But I think it's too academic and confusing. I've played gospel in Black churches for 50+ years. We do not clap on the down beat. We clap on the upbeats, (ee and uh if we're talking about 16th notes.)
@@AfiScruggsplaysbass For sure, like I say It was on in the background and was confused by the explanation so much I stopped the video and went to make a comment. I thought he was then gonna clap on the downbeats then realised it was cut time - so yes he is but isn't. Like you say it's def more confusing than it needs to be.

the stroke on the 1 would be like clapping on the 1 though lol

the guy could use a public speaking class, but he is easy to listen to and good at explaining. great videos
Have you done a midi pattern on the Purdie Shuffle, as used with Steely Dan
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
7:44 he just broke the matrix
Everything I’ve found online refers to the back beats as 2&4. Explicitly stating it is not 1 or 3.

"Brickhouse" . It moves you. She's a brick house haha

Ariana? Haha Grivina rocks the house.

I always found it easier to do: "one and the a two and then a..."
The problem with that, is the "and" when counting 16 does not match the "and" when counting 8.

Hi Ethan! Where i can take full course of "Play with your Rhythm"? Thank you.
The difference in color temperature between the camera positions is killing me. Always adjust your white balance folks.
