  • The West Coast system originated with Bill Walsh. While the West Coast system is now much more broad than what Walsh ran, the bones of the moniker are timing-based passing systems that are designed to stretch the field horizontally. There is an emphasis on short throws that act as an extension of the running game. The pass game is predicated on timing and steadily moves the ball down the field while controlling the tempo of the game and giving the potential for a big play.

I love that you use the Vikings as the first example because Jerry Burns of the Vikings used this scheme before it was coined as the west coast offense. Walsh used his system, and quite honestly some college teams systems and made it famous

The West Coast offense is a concept of the pro style offense. “Pro style” is just a catch phrase for 21 & 12 personnel. The emphasis is on the QB being a pocket passer. The pro set is a formation

Bill Walsh was not the father of the west coast offense. At best, he is the uncle of the west coast offense. Nobody did it better than Don Coryell, who at one time, coached the wide open San Diego State University Aztecs. At the same time he was coaching the Aztecs, just down the street, the GRANDFATHER of the west coast offense, Sid Gillman, was coaching the San Diego Chargers staring Lance Alworth. You know those guys talked. By 1978 or 79, Coryell came to the Chargers via St. Louis Cardinals and gave rise to Air Coryell. Around 1979/80, guess who their QB coach was....Bill Walsh. He learned the finer details of the passing game while coaching and learning from Dan Fouts, who, as a rookie, was a backup to the great Johnny Unitas, and I'm sure both talked offense. So the original concept of the west coast offensive was not conceived by Bill Walsh, but by Gilliman and Coryell.

Walsh actually hated people calling his offense "West Coast" because he thought his system was sufficiently different to deserve a different name.

How can anyone not give some blame to the caliber of receivers Dak had last year? Look at the caliber that surrounded Jalen Hurts.

Why do people have so much blind hate for Dak? He's literally the second most accurate passer currently playing by completion percentage.
