  • The Air Raid offense was popularized by Mike Leach, Hal Mumme, and Sonny Dykes. The offense is popular in college and is often accompanied by the no huddle and a fast tempo. Quarterbacks will audible at the line of scrimmage based on the defensive alignment. Air Raid is pass-heavy with the goal to get the ball to athletes in space. As a substitute for the run game, Air Raid offenses make a conscious effort to create high percentage passes and screens to stress the entire field and allow for easy execution.

The wide splits between the offensive linemen is interesting to me, because while it causes pass rushers to take a longer path to the QB, it seems like it also puts the O-Line on islands to where the QB has to execute if the O-Line is losing their one-on-ones to the point that the longer distance traveled by the pass rushers becomes more and more negligible.

Most Oline blocking is about getting to a spot to cut off the defender. Air raid teaches verification drops which was different than every other blocking scheme. I think the number one reason for the split was to make pass lanes. Pass lanes are a big deal in higher level football.

@@markmamola7167 Can you explain what you mean by verification drops?

@@joeschmo5782 before pass first offenses pass blocking was done by stepping between the defender and the qb. The offensive tackles would step sideways to block the ends and the guards would get in the defensive tackles faces. In the Air raid the offensive line takes a huge step backwards. This is why their stance is so vertical. This vertical drop is is really the only blocking the line needs to learn.
