My grandfather had a ‘51 Martin D18. I’ll always remember him playing it at family gatherings. When he passed it was handed down to my uncle and he and the family continued to enjoy it. Sadly my uncle recently passed away, but that D18 is still being played, now by my cousin and his kids. A great instrument, and even greater men.
Um this guitar is $2,499 and 100% hand made in the USA. Maybe if the used car is a wrecked Ford Pinto from the 70s and won't start because it doesn't have an engine. Maybe.
I think a working mans guitar is right. Music isn't like other professions. You have to be successful in music to actually work in it. A professional in music needs a good tool. That being said... its the artist not the paintbrush.

Great. Love mine which I bought when I inherited my parents. Wanted something special - never to be sold - to remind me of them. Went to every store, tried every acoustic. And ended up with the D18. 3 years later it has really opened up - and I love it. Congrats Pete
I did just about the same thing, got myself a d35 after an inheritance. Such a joy to be able to pick it up every day and be reminded of my dad while playing it.
@Neil...haha... For many players the name on the headstock makes everything in life a whole lot better. 😂 I get it, it's like living the dream. Whereas a dream car can cost almost anything, this dream guitar is attainable for many a mere mortal. It's a great acoustic, that's not to say others aren't comparable for far less. It was a dream guitar for Pete (apparently) & you could see his joy. However, I'd likely guess, now that this dream guitar is ticked off, there's likely another dream guitar on the horizon somewhere. Cheers. 🎸🎶
They say all kinds of stuff like that, but they don't know me. A man without musical talent or skill can get a lot out of a Tele*, not so much from a Martin. (I do sort of hanker for one of their Ukuleles.) *A man with a loud-ass amp, and a Tele, anyway...
If anybody laughs at the comment about the smell... they have never smelled a new Martin guitar fresh out of the case or been to the factory. Congrats.
I use an SM-11 in places where I just want more SM-57, but I can't get close enough. It's the same cartridge basically, nekkid. I am sure that a lapel mic is not the best thing but it is a thing.
I got my Martin D42 last year and there is nothing like opening that box/case and holding your dream guitar for the first time. Realizing a dream…awesome!
In this context the working man would likely be a working musician so that’s really not that unreasonable! (But I’m not saying it’s cheap by any means of course)
Congratulations, Pete! If anyone deserves any guitar they want, it's you. I'm happy with my Yamaha FG800, but obviously if that lottery win comes in.... x
I wish to visit Andertons one day, just to say "grrreetings ladies and gentlemen" and "where is Danish Pete from Dutch?", then buy some Dane Gain. That will be the trip of my life.
I was sat here going OM28, John Mayerr OM28 before you opened the box. Then I was D28, then you pull out the 18 instead. Never saw that coming. Congratulations!
Great man, congratulation! Always super to see grown up men so happy with their new toy, people that don't love guitars will never understand this feeling, enjoy it!!
When my Martin was delivered, I opened the box and it was in tune, string height was great, and intonation was perfect. When I sat down and played I realized the difference coming out of this guitar acoustically. Even though many companies copy the Martin construction...they can't get the Martin sound.
I tell you what, I'm not the biggest stickler for paying more to get that extra 5% out of a guitar, I'm typically just fine and dandy with low to mid priced guitars. However, whenever I've had the pleasure to play a nice Martin or Taylor I could totally feel that it's worth the price. Congrats Pete!
It’s amazing how we all fall in love with different guitars in different price ranges. That undeniably sounds amazing with a bigger harmonic range than what I attribute the Martin sound to. Def one to keep an eye on.
"It just smells like home." -- I have a 2001 Martin DR and the smell of the rosewood 20 years later is still as intoxicating now as it was back when I bought it. Tuned to Open D, it's just a beast. Martin guitars, FTW.
Congratulations Pete! It's good to see and hear you being overjoyed from acquiring the D18. Enjoy it and hope it inspires you to write some new songs. Take care Pete! Oh by the way, that Martin D18 is a beauty!
I'm about ready to buy a D-18 too! gonna be my first Martin, was going to buy one right before the pandemic hit, then they were all sold out, and the factory was shut down, then I moved to LA, finances are just about there to finally place my order
Martin rocks. I tried both the D18 and HD18 and, actually bought the HD18. But it's just a personal taste. Both are great. Extremely well build. Extremely well balanced through the entire spectrum. You can strum light Noel Gallagher or play Little Wing, it will respond perfectly to what you give. And YES ! IT SMELLS TO WELL (still true after 2 years).
Thanks for recording that Pete! Nothing like seeing someone finally get their dream guitar... doesn't matter if they've played one before. When it's finally yours it's different. It always marks a milestone in your life, I find. She's beautiful.
That is fabulous and as always Pete, a great review 👍 Martin make superb acoustics. So pleased with mine which has done me well for so many live gigs and recording. Wouldn’t want anything else except an even more expensive and superlative Martin. Oh and that smell doesn’t go away….thankfully 😉
That sounds fantastic. Always fun to see new guitar joy. Sorry for the tough times. I know everyone will agree, having you guys to hang out with has seen us through some challenging lonely times. Sorry you can’t see that we’re with you. Just know that we are. Better days ahead.
Warmest congratulations Maestro Pete! You deserve the very best and the D18 is the guitar all the other guitars aspire to be. I got mine earlier this year and it astounds and delights me every day - and it sure as hell smells good. Like you, I now have a three Martin family - a D jnr. ( one of the original ones) - an OMC 28 (tender beauty in a rosewood box) and now the D18. I noticed Martin put their titanium strings on the D45s from the factory and I thought, if they're good enough for the 45 then they're good enough for all my Martins - expensive but worth it - my little jnr. sounds like a standard series axe. Enjoy your new friend - you are man of rare talent, spirit and generosity and I thank you from distant South Australia.
Hi Pete, I realize this video is a year old but I loved the unboxing and how excited you were to get this beauty. I purchased a D-28 Modern Deluxe three years ago and love it, unfortunately I'm still learning to play, it does have a beautiful sound in spite of my incompetence in playing. Belated congratulations on getting this beautiful guitar!!
After many guitars have passed through my hands by buying, selling & trading…I am left with only two that I believe are the iconic “cream of the crop”: A Collings OM1 & a Martin D-18. To the uneducated, neither guitar looks like anything special at all…but they are both incredible instruments that do it all, and do it perfectly. Congratulations, Pete!
I got my first D-18 back in January and I totally understand his reaction. I could just sit there and strum any chord and just listen and feel it ring out. It was and still is perfection.
I am so happy for you Pete! I went to the Martin factory for a tour several years ago at this point and got a 000-17. Just like you, something about the simplicity, no frills but brilliant sounding.
I can totally relate to everything he said. Exactly how I felt when I first picked up my D18 a couple years ago randomly. Wasn’t planning to buy a guitar but it was just so good that I couldn’t put it down. The cool thing about this guitar is that it just sounds better and better after years of playing. It’s like the guitar age and mature with you. I have bought and sold many guitars over the years but I can’t imagine letting go my D18.
Stop it! I just bought a new guitar! Heck, the guitar store just called this morning to ask if there was anything else I wanted and I sent the call to voicemail. (But I've so come to love the sound of a D-18 despite everything else I already have.)
Congrats on your Martin. I bought an 000-28 about 2 years ago. Just wait till it opens up, it will sound great. Ernie Ball Silk and Steel Extra Soft : )
I tried a D-18 just like this at the store a few months back. Bar none my favourite acoustic guitar I've ever played. Looking forward to owning one for life someday. Congrats Pete!
Some people seem to think that the average working man couldn't afford this guitar. Why not? Alot of average working people save a bit or finance other things that they enjoy for leisure that are in the few thousand dollar range. I'm a regular working Joe who's far from affluent but I have for instance a nice ebike that's similar in price to a nice Martin guitar and with a little sacrifice and planning I found a way to have it be part of my life. Finally a video that isn't about Les paul guitars, I Once owned a D-28 which was stolen by my heroin junkie brother and pawned for $400. Nice d-18, Pete, Congrats on that it sounds amazing even on the little mic! I even owned the Eric Clapton 000-16 for a while in the late 90s!
That spruce top complements that gorgeous mahogany so well. I swear I can smell it from here. What a wonderful tone. It is sweetly singing when you play it. Enjoy.
December 2006 I got my 000-28 , ordered through a dealer . The first thing I did after unboxing , was to smell the guitar . Before tuning , before anything else , I sniffed . The scent is nearly intoxicating , the Spanish Cedar purfling , the Rosewood , the Spruce , the new Geib style case . so Pete , I'm with you bud ... enjoy it . after 15 years , mine still has the faint aroma of a new Martin .
I remember years ago trawling guitar shops with a friend who was looking to buy an accoustic. Budget was around £400 and everything we tried in the price range was all pretty same same... I said we should try a guitar well up the price range to get a feel for how good those £400 guitars were. Pulled an all mahogany Martin off the wall with a £1k price tag. Strummed a G chord and our jaws hit the floor... We put it back and got back to the £400 guitars trying to ignore the gulf in quality we'd just experienced... Amazing guitars
I have the DV-28..Martins just have a magic sound..I hear Neil Young as soon as it’s strummed 😎..btw congrats Pete, least yours will get put to very good use👍
Lovely well balanced tone, enjoy Pete! I have a 22 years old J1 which despite not having fresh strings for over a decade still sounds mint. Lightweight too 👍❤️🎶
"Smells well..." Definitive 3rd most important feature of an acoustic guitar
Love the smell of a mahogany acoustic guitar
nice mix of wood and hide glue
There is no substitute for the smell of an acoustic guitar. I don't know what it is, but there's just something about it.
@@jesseyasaitis9036 I just bought an HD-28 and I swear I smell it everytime I open the case. It’s crazy but indescribable
