Thank you Rachel. I am enjoying your videos so much. I have having a Thyroidectomy in 2 months. I have had 3 nodules for several years. Now I have 4. I get an ultrasound and fine needle aspiration done every year. The nodules are benign but 3 of them have grown to 4 cm. When they are this large. They can cause problems with your windpipe. So my endocrinologist said its time to remove half or all of my thyroid. I am 67 and I choose to have the entire Thyroid removed. I don't want to remove half and then have to have another surgery later on when I am older. This is my first major surgery and my first time under anesthesia. All the information you are sharing is very helpful. I appreciate it so much. I hope you are doing great. 😊

@@mariachua3780 today is 3 weeks since I had my total thyroidectomy. My recovery has gone quite well. I didnt have to stay in the hospital and I didnt come home with a drain. The first week I was pretty out of it and had to take pain medication. I basically slept for the first 3 days. I did not lose my voice. My husband took wonderful care of me. I kept the talking down to a minimum for a few days. By the end of the second week, I was only taking Ibuprophen.
I slept on a Wedge pillow with a memory foam pillow on top of it for 2 weeks. I highly recommend a Wedge pillow. The Wedge pillow felt too hard so I added my memory foam pillow and it was perfect.
I have been putting "Aquafor" ointment on my incision twice a day. It was recommended by my surgeon. Luckily, the incision hasn't itched...yet. I am pretty much back to normal but I don't lift heavy things yet.
I have had more acid reflux than ever. I am consulting with my Dr. about that. Good luck to you with everything. 😊

My Endocrinologist has changed the dosage of my Levothyroxine from 112mcg to 100 mcg to 88 mcg. I do labwork the end of May to see how 88mcg is working. One thing I have noticed since my complete thyroid surgery is I feel cold alot more. My Endocrinologist said this is common and for some folks it goes away after 6 months or so and some people have it the rest of their lives. I hope it goes away. Thank you for asking. Thank you for this video, even though this was 3 years ago. I was called today by my endocrinologist and she told me it wasn't good news and I knew right then what it was about, my first two FNA's came back inconclusive, but they sent in a different sample I was told and this came back positive for cancer. I have a very small cancerous nodule on my right side of my thyroid and she told me they used to take out the whole thyroid, but in 2015 they changed the guidelines and now they only remove half. I requested a biopsy for the left side of my thyroid as I have 2 very small modules, they never biopsied the left side so I requested they do that. She told me she's going to put in a referral to the surgeon and that she'll let me know from there what day and time I'll be scheduled. I'm very nervous because I really don't want the whole thyroid taken out, but of course if it needs to be done I want that. I'm also going to ask if they're going to test the lymph nodes in my neck while they're in there. I'm worried about gaining weight as I know the thyroid is a big part of that. I don't do well with anesthesia so that's another thing I'm concerned about. My cousin is an RN and she said she's going to come take care of me after surgery, so that's a good thing as I have a small dog who needs to be walked, fed etc. I feel like crying but that won't help anything. I have faith in God that he will watch over me. ✝️🙏💜

I had mjne removed 16 years ago. They didn't give my anything prep. calcium, iodine or body wash nothing. This was done at Johns Hopkins in Maryland.
Maybe because it was so long ago. 🙄
I had absolutely NO PAIN AT ALL, EVER... I had a one night stay.
They woke me every hour checking my calcium levels by pinching my cheeks and chin area. If your calcium level is too low, your face would feel numb.
Other than all that it was a piece of cake.
Only thing that hurt was taking out two or three stitches.
She yanked them out like a beast. Pretty heartless. I supposed to rest was glued. Lol Not all Operations are the same. It was the easiest operation Ive ever gone through. Only took pain med one time after surgery.
Magbe a for a year my throat felt very Tight I could feel every time I swallowed.
Used a good skin cream moisturizer on the incision after the redness was gone. I used it for months. I hardly have a scar at all. But it's important to keep it moist....👍

I also loved that you stressed “ advocating for yourself “ and getting your needs met. Even though I’m a retired nurse after 40 yrs I tend to not want to bother the nurses. I never tell anyone I’m a nurse cuz nurses get a bad wrap about not being great patients lol. I’ve never been the type to think I know it all. There’s no way a nurse can know everything. Very informative. I had my total thyroidectomy end of Jan of '24. Everything went fine. Lab work was great. I had a multi nodular goiter which was about 8 cm in length. Its difficult to describe the pain. It just hurt. I only took Tylenol and 2 Tramadol ( 1 post op day and first evening I was home to just take the edge off which helped). I also have an allergy to adhesive so the surgeon use the Deramond (a glue to cover incision). A little over a week post op I began having a slight reaction to the Deramond with blisters and itchiness. It then worsened. My PCP recommended Zyrtec 3x a day and adding Benadryl which somewhat helped but at day 12 post op the blisters were popping though the Derambond and the antihistamines were unable to control the itching and the Deramond was removed 14 days post op. At 16 days post op from blisters formed and in addition to previous blisters now weeping. Still some minimal weeping and itchiness. Now slowly healing.

This was a very informative video. My question is if I'm not being too personal, why did you have to have your thyroid removed? The reason I ask is that I have "suspicious" and "highly suspicious" nodules - the highly suspicious nodule is causing me pain and my lymph nodes are swollen and I'm wondering if surgery is in my future. I haven't been to the doctor in a couple of years because I'm afraid of hearing what he may have to say. Thank you.

    • @thehappyartichoke3012

I understand that it's scary to go see a doctor. I would encourage you to talk to someone now so you can think through your options, and feel free to get more than one opinion. Good luck!

It was truly horrible. I have been reading things that talk about natural foods that reduce nodules. I wish i would of explored natural remedies first. I wish i had a thyroid. It saddens me to have to deal with all the side effects of not having a thyroid.
