I just had my procedure this January 21st. It's been only 8 days, and I'm trying my best to be up and about. Been going grocery stores with my husband driving. Being at home and not able to do anything is frustrating. Right now, I've been dealing with bad cough, tickle in my throat. I am afraid it can disrupt my recovery and healing process. Do you have any recommendations for it? Also how long did you feel like you have a lump in your throat before they completely gone? I know it is normal. Thank you for your videos. I don't feel like I'm alone with this.

Hi Rachael. It's Debbie here, I believe I texted you last year. Just before I went in to have my what turned out to be a 6 inch goiter. When they operated it was 4 hours. As I hemmoraged and lost quite a bit of blood and had blood transfusions and plasma. And other stuff. I have another appointment with the surgeon, as the right thyroid is growing. So not quite sure what to do follow up in October. Blood work every 6 months. Also dealing with other surgeries had a kidney stone removed, doing follow ups for that. Then cataract surgery next week. Other than that hope you are doing well. Thanks

Did you have a biopsy before having it removed and if so did you notice fatigue after the biopsy then it got worse after the surgery

Many people have success with thyroid surgery. Please don't beat yourself up if everything doesn't turnout as well as you've been told to expect though. I had a total thyroidectomy in 2005. I still struggle with fatigue, anxiety, weight issues, hypothyroidism, temperature regulation, etc. I don't say this to be negative. This is still better than having cancer. But always feeling like I was doing something wrong or that I was losing my mind was awful. It's important to know that this surgery isn't always the be all end all and not everyone ends up feeling amazing. The thyroid affects nearly every function in your body so it's really important to have your levels checked if you are feeling off and don't buy into the negative thoughts saying that it's something terrible or even that it's just in your head. There are many many women who have put themselves through hell because they've been told everything is going to be wonderful after thyroid surgery only to find out it is a constant ongoing treatment. It is very possible for your bloodwork to come back on point and still feel like a sack of wet laundry. Those numbers are definitely not an exact science. Listen to the positive stories and take advice from people who have had great experiences. But please don't feel isolated or crazy if you still don't feel good months or years after surgery. Keep talking to your doctor and endocrinologist and work at finding a solution that is right for you.

  • @awilderstories

This is so frustrating to hear because I had RAI for Graves Disease in 2011 and have had chronic fatigue ever since. I'd far rather just have lived with Graves. I have seen specialists from coast to coast and about 20 endocrinologists, tried integrative and eastern medicine, and very little has helped. No has ever mentioned calcium to me that I remember. When I have asked doctor's said calcium would only be an issue if my parathyroid were affected or removed. I wish it were as easy as you make it sound but it's not. I HIGHLY recommend trying anything but having your thyroid removed especially via RAI before taking that step.

I may or may not need this surgery as my thyroid is getting bigger. Right now it's getting larger on the back of the thyroid so it feels like I have a pill stuck in my throat. It will (if I have to have it) be my third surgery under general anesthesia. Last one was gall bladder removal which was under laparoscopic surgery so it was in and out in about 2 hours with no hospital stay.

I walked to the bathroom right out of post op lol. And walked to my room that I had to stay in overnight! And then I got a cheeseburger and fries 😂😂 i wasn't in any pain except for my throat from the tube but other than that I was watching TV eating all night getting meds talking everyone's ear off and ready to go home!! Everything in the hospital was super easy! However being home was a different story! I'm on day 10 after my thyroidectomy and my neck is still soooo swollen! The first couple days after I got home my entire chest swelled up and i had AN EGG sized ball right below my incision! Scared the hell out of me and thought maybe I needed a drain but the dr said it was fine after sending him pics. It was also very hot to the touch but I used heat instead of ice (ice seemed to hurt it worse) and the swelling went down big time! Sleeping has been crap! Last night (day 9) was the first decent night sleep I've gotten since my surgery. I couldn't lay on my sides it hurt to sit up and just couldn't get comfy in any position to sleep. On a positive note I had such a good dr u literally can't even see my incision anymore its amazing! On a crappy note I'm probably gonna need voice therapy because it really affected my vocal cords:( I know its only been 10 days but my voice is unrecognizable and I have no pitch nothing. And I used to sing and I can't even hum and a correct note so that's scaring me a lot and making me so sad. So I just pray I get my voice back. But I'd rather not have a voice than have cancer so I shouldn't complain!
