Fast List Explained | Is 60-130 the New Quarter Mile?

  • Every one knows about 0-60 and the quarter mile. But is it really the best way to measure a car's straight line performance? Or is using a VBOX or Dragy and doing 60-130 pulls the best way to tell if the car is fast. Let's also talk about how we do our acceleration testing.
    Track Day TV is a channel dedicated to performance cars and building an extensive database of their acceleration times. At the same time, I strive to deliver content in a cinematic and visually pleasing style with honest opinions from a guy who just wants to drive cars fast.

    Ya 40-100 and 60-130 are more telling of a car then 0-60. Most passing happens in these ranges then 0-60. Also it gives better info on electric cars as they look super fast but fall off at higher speed. Love how you correct for weather, DA and such. Great info

    Great video, I wish Audi would do these kind of metrics comparing their line up, like the S3 vs S4 vs RS3 vs S6, etc... Some cars are closer in the 0-60 then one car keeps pulling while the other falls behind.

    Standardized tests are an essential baseline to compare cars. There's of course a whole lot more about cars than standardized tests. Essential elements like "character', "ride", and "styling" are not readily reduced to numbers which resides in the realm of discussion- a critical part of an auto enthusiasts experience. Your vids are the best.

    Im absolutely loving your channel. Your "weird" obsession of collecting data when you were younger...I did the same thing.
    My car is a street car so I rarely go the drag strip.
    From my experience, theres too much BS at the track. At the track, getting a good pass out of a 700rwhp street car, 6 speed on drag radials is not easy. At my track your lucky to get 3 passes in a night so you better not blow the tires off, bog off the line, or miss a shift. For measuring shear acceleration, 40 -100 and 60 - 130 is the way to go.

      Hey Tim....so normally I'd agree 100% with that statement BUT with electric cars gaining in popularity (Tesla specifically) the 0-60 and 1/4 mile are becoming more and more significant at showing how quick a car is. As a side note ANY Tesla haters can STFU! It's an American car company...we FINALLY have a car brand that is ahead of THE REST OF THE WORLD! You can hate on electric but as an American you should LOVE TESLA! That is my PSA for the day lol! Nothing to do with you Tim :)

    Nice work! have been doing 60-130 tests with a VBox for a while now. i have about 140-150 different vehicles tested. from tuned superbikes, to the usual 1000+ HP GTR's and everything in between. what's fascinating is that SOMETIMES cars that look like they win based on the 60-130 actually lose in the real world, and it's down to throttle response. all my tests are done on the same stretch of road at the same time (late at night). since i can't do standing starts, i got WOT in the ideal gear at around 40mph; idea being that by the time you're at 60, you're in the sweet spot and get the best possible time. but in a real wold roll-on race, some cars simply respond quicker, and that isn't always captured in the 60-130. finally, with really high powered modern cars, 130 just isn't fast enough. case in point, a 650S and 991 GT2RS have virtually identical 60-130's. this was borne out during a roll race we did, and the two cars were absolutely neck and neck. but once you were above 150mph, the GT2RS started to pull away noticeably. but overall, yes, 60-130 is arguably the best real world test of straight line performance.

    • @SpeedLabsMotorEnvy
      @SpeedLabsMotorEnvy  4 роки тому

      Seems that we may have the same obsession. I have tested so many cars, but only recently have I started really compiling them into a database with DA correction, slope verification, etc. And you are absolutely right, 60-130 is not the whole story, but it paints the best picture for a lot of highway rolls. Things like gearing, powerband, and throttle response play a huge roll in a real world race that just can't be quantified in numbers.

Plus it links up to your phone and does all math for you so it's much more intuitive. The VBOX is just a more complex tool with more functions for someone who needs it to gather more than just straight line data.

    I like the real world numbers. 40-100 & 60-130. You are right, the typical numbers released from the manufacturers are always the best possible and many more variables. Seen it a bunch with"faster" 0-60 cars getting smoked because the driver is an idiot

    • @SpeedLabsMotorEnvy
      @SpeedLabsMotorEnvy  5 років тому

      0-60 is very misleading to a car's overall performance beyond stop and go traffic. So many cars now do a sub 4 second 0-60 only to be walked by something "slower on paper" in a usable racing range.

    • @SpeedLabsMotorEnvy
      @SpeedLabsMotorEnvy  5 років тому

      Thanks, as mentioned there are other variables involved such as DA and slope. The 720S is also a spider which adds a bit of weight to the mix. I do believe that with a few more runs and perfect air, the 720S spider would be capable of 5.6-5.8 in the 60-130.

      If I had it my way, I'd actually pick something like 40-120 or 60-140. The longer the range, the more information it gives you about a car. But 60-130 was already standardized for a while now so I rather add to it with the 40-100 than take away from. Maybe I can put together my data and do 40-130 for a car that has info on both.

    Z06 Power, yet more comfortable. Handles great, looks/sounds great. Is not as expensive. You can put a child seat on the back seats or friends in a pinch.

But I can tell you from the 15 minutes of driving one, that it is a far better overall car than the Z06. The only downside is appearance, but that is subjective. I think it's a cool looking car, but my wife likes the Corvette better.

      I love the ZL1 Camaro. Almost bought one before buying my first BMW M4 a couple years ago. I just bought a 2019 M4 CS last month. I'm also in the car business and drive everything. The F82 M4 is one of a few cars that is superior to the ZL1 as a dailyish high performance coupe. The M4's build quality is night and day difference from the ZL1. Most people would agree the F82 is also the sexier car as well. The M4 still gives you that classy BMW feel when you aren't trying to just go fast. You can pull up to a business setting in a suit and tie and look the part in the M4. ZL1? Not so much. A simple $300 MHD tune and catless downpipes and the F82 M4 will also pull easily on the ZL1 from a roll. More backseat space, more options, better gas mileage......

      60-130 is the new 0-60 only because everyone is getting tired of Tesla's crushing the 0-60 against much higher horsepower cars. I maintain that 0-60 is more indicative of 95% of the daily driving that most people, even auto enthusiasts, do. I've hit 130mph exactly once in my life on a long back straight at my local road course in a heavily modified WRX. 0-60 happens daily.

      I like to drive pretty conservatively on the street as well, but I frequently track my cars so they see a lot of time in the 110-140MPH range, especially on NJMP's Lightning course. I think I remember you from the P3D video's comment section. The P3D does do a really good job at out accelerating similarly classed cars in the 40-100. I still want to try a 60-130 run (on a closed course) with one to see where it really starts to fall off.

    60-130 became a "standard" measurement but it's very flawed. It's a short burst favoring cars with specific gearing and transmission types that are also slow enough to dead hook. 50-160 or similar would be better. Numerous cars with a quick 60-130 time get drug in roll racing because by nature it's a short gimmicky flawed measurement.

    I've said this for yrs 1/4 and 0 - 60 are dead! These are old school ways of measuring speed. Just because one car is faster to 1/4 mile doesn't mean its faster car its just means its quicker of two car to 1/4 or 0-60. In real world most races go beyond 1/4 mile 60 to 130 is more accurate realistic measures of which car is faster not quicker. Gearing, power band, traction even aero all come into play.
