Thank you to all concerned for reporting and filming our family's story so sensitively. We have lived in New Zealand for over fifty years, I was born in Shipley and my wife in Low Moor. My sister visited the UK years ago and located the grave then. It was badly overgrown but with the help of my cousin cleared the site. Jabez's father, John Lumb my 4X great grandfather, was the Verger of All Saints Church. Another incident in Martha's life occurred when she was robbed of her purse containing 8s6d whilst trying to help a lady, this was reported in the Leeds Times 14 November 1868. Thanks again, Peter Lumb
@@BradfordThroughTheLens Hi , there were 3 surviving children. James , my Great grandfather who found the boys . Married and had 4 children . He died age 68 in 1924 . He was a joiner and builder and a member of the Endeavour lodge of the NIOOF ( Oddfellows ) and was presented with a clock as a mark of esteem for services as Treasurer for 11 years. I still have the clock. Another son Jabez Bancroft never married he too was a joiner. The 3rd child, a daughter, Julia Hannah white married and had 1 daughter. Kind regards Peter Lumb.
Hi Riaz, I am a Bradford man living in the Allerton area. I watch all your video's and I would like to say I love everything you do and to keep up the good work. Thanks again, Simon.
Thanks, guys, for taking the time to prepare, edit and publish this. I left Bradford in 1967 at 22 years of age, and spent the next 55 years in Western Australia. But commentaries like this prove the old adage "You can take the lad out of Bradford but you'll never take the Bradford out of the lad".
Thank you for telling us such a fascinating yet heartbreaking story. Once again, you have managed to treat the subjects with dignity and sensitivity whilst making sure their voices are heard. Rest in Peace the Lumb family x
Thankyou for this, it’s a really fitting way to tell the story of a tragic moment in the city’s (and of course our church’s) history. Well researched and sensitively told, thankyou for putting the report toghether! You’re very welcome to come back to see the rest of the church anytime!
First and foremost, thank u VERY much for teaching me all about my Beloved Bradford!!! A job well done guys and DEEPLY appreciated by us all. I watch all yr episodes with great interest. Secondly i am heartbroken to hear of the Lumb family tragedy. So much so whenever i pass the persian restaurant i will remember the inquest took place there, and whenever i pass the All saints church......i shall forever think of poor Martha....may they all rest in heavenly peace Amen!
Thank you for your kind words. Makes it all worth while doing these videos. When I first heard about this story, I couldn't believe what had happened back then. Poor Martha, that's all I could think.🙏
This was such a heartbreaking story to hear, rest in peace to the lumb family, i said a little prayer after the video it was so touching, and as always the respect you show at the graveside is very much appreciated by all who watch, stay safe ❤
Such a heart breaking story, just pain me to think of how the parents must have been grief stricken. Video made in a very respectable way, I've walked past that church many times, it's crazy to think there's so many places we walk past not knowing the history that lies within those properties.
Outstanding research yet again, very sad but interesting piece of Bradford’s history. Keep up the brilliant work of bringing these little shorts of history to life yet again, very few people of Bradford I suspect will know these old FACTS of old Bradford. Well done for you’re compassion and feeling for the people in these history snippets. As I say, well done lads.
Another excellent and compassionate video. You are all doing us (and the people subject of your videos) a great service by preserving our history. It is sometimes said that we all die twice: firstly when we cease to live, and secondly the last time our name is spoken. You have given a form of life to these people.
A good story at the church above the maternity hospital at Heston a gravestone with the inscription of Thomas surname I’ve forgot a fireman 47 years old murdered in the pack horse inn Bradford you can’t put murdered on a gravestone anymore. Great stories you are bringing rip the little ones and the family
I'm live in little Horton around 2min.from that church and I never hire this story very very cool story and big THANK YOU!!! GUYS FOR SHERING WITH ASS 😊❤
It's my first time watching, and I'm heartbroken, but do happy they are all together now. Thank you for gentle and kind way you present these tragedies ❤
What a tragic tale. My maternal side of my family comes from Yorkshire and I have/had relatives in Bradford so it’s interesting to see the city and hear something of its history as I have never been there. Thanks
It is very sad. Imagine the pain the mother went through. We have renovated this grave, as you can see it's collapsed. Watch out for the video, please. Thank you 👍🏾
Another excellent video very moving. Its really important we bring the life's and stories of people from the past back to the present so they can be remembered. ❤
For the father to join his sons 10 days later ,on valentine's day.,a day symbolised by a love heart, one can imagine his broken heart that dreadful day, when the news of his 3 sons reached his sick bed..!
Jabez, appears to have been quite a popular name at one point......I've a few with that name in my family tree. Noah, Moses & Aaron were also popular names......my gt grandfather was called Moses and his brother was called Aaron. Aaron later became vicar of Denholme. I've not seen a resurgence of the names Jabez or Moses, but some children do still get named Aaron, and Noah is a very popular name at the moment.
There is so much to this story not been told, how was the furnaces heated, with what fuel.presumably it was gas.the kids that found their brother must have been overcome within seconds.so why wasn’t the mother affected.when the kids found their brother they would have gone for help within seconds.strange.
@@BradfordThroughTheLensthis really is a mystery,I have found out that the likely fuel that was used would have been coke or coal, and not gas.how can fumes from coke or coal kill so quickly.
Churches among other public buildings were heated with coke which was what was left after the gas was removed. As it was waste it was sold off at around 10 shillings a ton! Coke fumes are incredibly toxic as they contain a high amount of carbon monoxide. The fathers bronchitis was probably due to the coke fumes as the furnaces were kept alight all week and he would be exposed to the fumes several times a day. Sadly such tragedies were all to common.

Wow - I live literally 5 minutes from where the church is , & never knew the story of these brothers ….
Very interesting,
Thank you
so the church never replaced the door with a gate has recommended
This was very interesting but very sad how do you ever recover from this
💔
Looks like those edging stones were going to be re-cycled for possibly building work as stone is very expensive to purchase.
HOW did that woman manage to carry on after all of this tragedy 😢😢
what a tragic accident
😔
RIP all 😢 - And how were all 4 family members buried in one grave? I can't quite work it out.
We have done a recent video of this grave restoration.
I will ask Graham, who restored the grave. Thanks for watching.
