Thank you for showing this. I might have lost count, but there appears to be 6 veterans buried here. No matter the color of skin, lives were at risk and lost. I salute all of them! Being a decendent of veterans the of Civil War through WW1, WW2 and Vietnam, I'm very proud of them all!
From records on Ancestry, Sam Flewellan was married 1st Ria Wooten 31 Dec 1889 in Terrell Co., GA, by Rev. O.C. Kelly; he married 2nd Lucy Harper 30 Dec 1896 in Terrell Co., GA. In 1890, Sam Flewellen owned 40 acres of land & the total value of his farm & livestock was $375.00 that year. On the 1900 Terrell Co. GA, census, he was listed as Sam J. Flewelen, age 54, wife Lucie age 39, & their children were Sufrania, 21; Sweedy 19, Gurtrude 19, Mose 14 (son), Clifford 13, Ella, 11; & Cora, 9. Robert located Sophania's grave in the video.
Thank you for going through the scrub and grass and brush to research and document this lovely old church, graveyard and school! I really appreciate learning about the people who are buried there, and learning about its history.
How sad that the church was abandoned with all of the things left inside. Great historical documentation graveyard, church, and school. Thank you, Other Robert. Enjoyed!
Robert O., this was a marvelous tour of what may have been true reconstruction, where black families were finally able to give their chidren the education and religious values they so deserved. I like that you are thinking of clearing the ret of the graveyard. I wonder if that marvelous tombstone was a gift of the community to a man who organized this area and made sure the children were educated. Thanks to you and your spouse for this wonderful tour.
I love history and old cemeteries so this is right up my alley. My family jokes with me because every time I go to where my parents are from, I don't visit the relatives I have there, I go visit and photograph a cemetery of two instead. (at least the dead haven't started talking to me!)
Awesome old graveyard! It could use a little tlc to restore it just a bit. Several of those stones would not have been cheap, even back 100 years ago. At one time, there were family who cared for these folks and their memories. This is part of why it can be hard to trace our ancestors back because the cemetery they are buried in can be lost to history. Good job, The Other Robert!!!
Hopefully some family members will see this and give us a little more history. Thank you Robert for trying to save this countries history. We need to keep it alive so other generations can learn from it and never repeat it. ✌&❤
THANK YOU ROBERT for taking us along on your adventure. I agree that someone needs to go back there and do more extensive cleanup. If Texas wasn't so far, I'd volunteer to come help out. Rest in peace all who are entered there. You are not forgotten.
And the birds will sing their song for those buried there, for all eternity. When I pronounce one of our Hospice patients, I ask the family what their loved one is doing for fun now that they haven't been able to do for a long time. It helps direct their grief into something pleasant to contemplate.
Robert, Thank you for taking the time to read the names and do research to allow these people who lived here once and had a community and church to worship and have families. They loved, then passed away, not forgotten back then, but now it seems they have been forgotten through so many years. It's so sad. You are doing a great work, Side Step Adventures Team!!
I enjoy either Robert as both are informative and entertaining including a very helpful investigative and respectful reclaiming of our culture history and military & civilization communities ancestors! I really enjoy both Robert’s working together as they play well off of each other’s strengths! Friend from Wisconsin.
Great job Robert, very respectful and the special research also showed the importance of this Church, the school and the lives of this community. THANK YOU
As far as I'm Concerned, you are "The" Robert, you were born into this world first, a long while before the younger Robert came along! So, sir, you are ROBERT!!! GREAT job in this video!!!
Robert, I can't wait for the follow up after you're done cleaning up out there. Thank you both for remembering and reintroducing those that have gone before. History can't be lost.
A whole history in one place. I'll bet there are some interesting life stories there. I have to laugh at you Roberts - both of you - for how often you don't bring the basic tools. Flashlight, whisk broom, chalk. One pocket, boys.
🇨🇦in london Ontario we rescued a chapel used by people who had once been enslaved when they came to London. It is now restored at Fanshawe pioneer village.
Great Job *Robert Yellow Shirt! !* Appre6the the Sidesteppin' The 1st one was a Beautiful Grave Stone. He was born in slavery, it appears he managed to establish himself well. That's a positive thought considering the post war attitudes towards the freed People's. What a challenging journey those Souls chose, and here we are in 2023 dealing with the like energies of the Lower minds prejudices I'm thinking those structures are pre-turn of the Century using square nails and the round are from later maintenance. Peace be in our Thoughts.
This is so fascinating, I wish we could know the stories of the people that lived back then. To think of those children attending school there and what it must have been like. Thank you so much I pray this isn't lost to history.
My husband used to laugh at me for enjoying these cemetery visits, but to me it is a respectful salute to the history of the people that lived before us. They all made thier own small changes in the history of the country we live in now. We know they certainly affected those they knew and loved in their time.
I looked in the 1910 Terrell Co. GA for Jacob Samuel Flewellen ...listed as Sam Fleweller. He owned his own land and employed workers. The school possibly was partly due to Mr. Flewellen. Everyone in his family was listed as being able to read and write. Lucy Harper was his second wife and was 22 years younger. They were married in 1896. He was registered as able to vote in the 3rd Precinct of Hancock County in 1867. Syphronia Smith was his daughter.
Thanks for the very interesting video, sad to see the lack of respect some people have leaving rubbish in a place where people are laid to rest. Shameful.
Mr. Robert your phone was in your pocket, doesn't it have a flasj light? You'll get back in the grove soon and bring you tools :) Very old place but so nice that someone is still coming and putting fresh flowers. And to learn at the end that a man born into slavery became such a wealthy and sucessful man and to help his community to grow and educate the children.
Other Robert, you did a great job on finding this church n graveyard. It was very interesting n fascinating. I would like to salute all the Veterans who served our country in their time. Thank you ! Yes, I would love to see the both Robert’s come back n try their best to clean up the areas that need to be done. I would hate to see those that are buried there be forgotten. Great video!(♥️) 😊♥️👍👍👍👍👍🌟🌟
Thank you for telling us about these individuals. If not for your efforts, and others who help to maintain this cemetery, these individuals might be forgotten.
So nice how you Sir you tell such a Loving story about these Beautiful Souls that were a part of our History. It's sad to see all this just in rubble hope some one will restore it. Was Beautiful once it can be Beautiful again. Such History. God Bless you Sir. 😊😊
Love the video! Always very informative but always raises more questions about who is buried there and their lives. Especially around the "rich teacher". Did he get educated as a slave then used his knowledge to teach former slaves? Once free did he get his education then became a teacher? Or perhaps, once free did he became successful, got him self educated then became a teacher? Lots of questions that can be asked.
That was so respectful of you to walk all over the grave yard and the Church, School place, out house, and pay your respects to the Veterans , love watching you, keep up the good work may God bless you.
Thank you for sharing, as it is so interesting to see history so far back .Take care. It's a shame how the cemeteries get forgotten after the generations move on or pass away as well .
Glad you'll be back to clear tree & other debris--couldn't help thinking a broom & shovel to expose others under leaves & grass would be greatly appreciated by all of the visitors & interred!
Geez Robert you sure do one hella job, you do the detail and go that extra few steps to discover more graves, thank you for an enjoyable video of this old cementary, school and church....thank you Sidestep Adventures for your service in all that you do................
The loss to society is the historical knowledge of the freed slaves and how they were able to overcome and to become successful in their free lives. The amount of knowledge we are losing from true historical areas is shameful. I hope you are able to get back and get some cleaning up down. Thank you for what you do!
Amazing history here with the Other Robert, this is one you need to watch till the end for the full story!

Thank you for the research. Wondering if the first wife died during childbirth.
Thank you for going through the scrub and grass and brush to research and document this lovely old church, graveyard and school! I really appreciate learning about the people who are buried there, and learning about its history.

I agree with you,if Missouri wasn't so far, I would definitely help. Some of my family members have been resting in peace for many years.😔
I love seeing y'all clean up cemeteries putting the love back into them so they aren't forgotten 🙏💕

It is so odd that they left the pews, organ, and piano in the building.
It is nice the cemetery or graveyard is kept up for the most part.

Guarantee it was through hard work and not victim mentality like we see today.
