"Neidr" (pronounced like Nyder) is one Welsh word for "snake", and I've often wondered if Welshman Terry Nation was inspired by this for the name of Davros's henchman. Strange but true: another Welsh word for snake is "Sarff", so it may be no coincidence that Davros's henchman in {the sequel that nobody asked for} is Colony Sarff... who is literally a "colony" of snakes.
The dalek page on TARDIS wiki does an interesting job of working out Dalek history. I think the idea is Genesis happens first. Then eventually the Neutronic War happens (separate from the 1000 year wars) in this time the Dalek Prime (who killed Davros) meets Yarvelling who uses Davros' notes or something to create the Silver Daleks in "The Daleks" who are subservient to the Davros daleks in Genesis who perhaps become the Supreme Daleks and the Dalek Prime becomes Emperor. I think
This was the very first Tom baker story I saw back in 1992 on the BBC 2 repeats. It was so exciting for me to see this back then as a kid they repeated one story from each of the Doctors at that time and really it was the start of my absolute obsession with the show. Really excited about season 20 & the updated Five Doctors also I'm looking forward to seeing the conversation with Martin Clunes & Janet as he's never really talked about being in Snakedance apart from when they pull up the clips of him in the costume as a put down 🤨
Fabulous chat, fellas. 😊 By all that is good and holy and decent, PLEASE get Josh Snares on this podcast before we reach November. It would be the most sudden and magnificent clash of timelines since The Three Doctors. ✨✨✨
Those Thal soldiers we see in the opening (and never again :( ) are some of my favourite costume designs in the classic series, I wish we'd seen more of them (or maybe gotten figures)!
I would say the only baddie post-Davros which went on to have any kind of legacy is the Zygons, especially as they were in the 50th anniversary. Sil was another one who popped into my head thanks to Varos, but he sadly hasn't come back yet
Fun thing about this story that Stuart Hardy pointed out in his review - if you put a voice filter on all of the Kaleds on Davros' side (Nyder, Ravon, etc.) they're basically already Daleks.
( 20:48 ) Wasn’t it Terrance Dicks who thought it was too scary as the DVD documentary has him say that they wouldn’t have done that under his leadership?
Even though I already have all the Season 20 stories on DVD, I'm still going to get the boxset for the special features. The doco of Peter, Janet and Sarah going on a road trip looks so funny XD That's worth paying for the boxset alone! Also all the other special features that come along with are going to be enjoyable to watch.
Part 5's cliffhanger is my Dad's earliest Doctor Who memory and as a 4 year old it terrified him! When me and my Dad rewatched it again a few years ago he was just as scared, as was I haha! Just a brilliant moment. Great review guys!
My headcanon for the Daleks chronology is that the stories pre Genesis of the Daleks happen until the 4th Doctor is involved in the story and then the history is slightly altered. This is unless you believe 4 was always involved in the Daleks’ Genesis. Love Genesis tho! A terrific story. The show is is in a terrific place at the moment.
My only issue with Davros living after Genesis is the fact that in many subsequent stories the Daleks seem almost reliant on him. Which to me sort of cheapens the quite brilliant illustration in this story that the Daleks outgrow Davros basically the second he gives them autonomy. That being said we do love a good bit of Davros every now and again.
Peter miles is sensational. My girlfriend’s uncles were heavily involved in the dr who fan appreciation societies back in the 80s and they were sharing stories and they said they got him as a guest a few times and they said how much of a kind gentleman he was, incredibly friendly and buying people’s drinks at the pub very much in contrast to his on screen appearances.
Nyder/Davros - Millington/Judson. Curse Of Fenric has a lot of parallels, and had we not had the hiatus, I wonder if Fenric would have recurred rather than just echoed slightly. Same is true of Morgaine.
Speaking of Davros and the Doctor as equals but the opposite, I wonder if the idea of the Doctor destroying their own people was meant to be a parallel to Davros, as both acted for what they saw as the greater good, and both events bookend the Time War (retcon notwithstanding obviously).
Controversially, I've never been mad on Genesis. The script and atmosphere are solid gold... it's just one of those ones where I finish it and go 'that could have been four parts.' And as much as I love Davros, I wasn't a fan of how every Dalek story became a Davros story from this point onwards.
Fab chat as per, guys. And your Tom, Paul, Peter C impressions are always 💯 As Levine often comes up here, does Billy know he was sat just behind you at Sea Devils BFI?
Steve Tribe and James Goss' Dalek Handbook is the one for a rationalisation of Davros dating. I read it when I was a kid and its framed my whole understanding of Dalek history since then!
Remember at the end of the story The Doctor says The Daleks development may have been delayed by a thousand years. Its reasonable to say The Daleks take place during their hibernation on Skaro while The First Doctor and his companions encounter a separate sector of them that spread over Skaro during the time frame.
My second story. I was a Star Wars kid so I found dr who fascinating and scary. Davros was so creepy but I couldn’t stop watching. It’s funny, that behind the sofa thing really is true when you’re 9 or 10. I started actively seeking out dr who after that, I was hooked.
Re. The Authorship of Genesis of the Daleks. I think that there are a number of fans who don't want their favourite story written by Terry Nation so push the "Robert Holmes" wrote it narrative. To me Genesis is pure Nation when he's fired up and inspired and pushed (Brian Clemens experienced the same thing with Nation on the The Avengers - he needed a sharp word with him to motivate at times). Holmes was too busy rewriting Ark in Space and Revenge of the Cybermen to be fussing with Genesis as well.
Ok. Can I just say, I’ve been anticipating for this and I’m very grateful too. Because Genesis of the Daleks, is my all time favourite DW story new and old. From my experience, I vaguely remember I was 4 years old I saw a repeat of this story on BBC Two back in 2000, (back when I knew very little and wasn’t fully aware of Doctor Who). But when I was 8 years old already a fan at that point in time, stories that featured Davros I definitely wanted to watch and I was fortunate my next door neighbour was a doctor who fan too. Because He had a box mostly filled with Tom Baker episodes on vhs and he had Genesis so I was very excited to watch it! I immediately was hooked every second, and Davros was outstanding and scary, for which is why Davros is my favourite villain from the show. For me Terry Malloy will always be my favourite Davros but Michael Wisher is very iconic and his performance is outstanding which many fans will agree. The scene when he and the 4th Doctor are interrogating each other and the hypothetical virus is my favourite moment. Honestly it’s a story i watch regularly and still have a great watch out of it.
I got the dalek figures original and b and m ones and dvd. Masterpiece dalek story and part of the time lord victorious and I hope to get the creation set
It's sad watching a Terry Nation documentary on one of the DVDs because everyone interviewed is struggling to find one story about Terry Nation where he doesn't come across as a dick.

A nice little touch in that episode 5 virus scene that I love to is the sound of a pulse flatline during the Davros monologue.

18:00 Haha That was me! 😂 I was the one who asked about the Big Finish Genesis Release. I was curious to hear what you guys thought of it.
The last time I was this early, the missing episodes were still around🤣🤣🤣

Time to order food and watch!
Especially after how yesterday I had the wrong day..

Davros' hand twitching in Destiny of the Daleks is my earlier TV memory, and one of my most vivid TV memories ever.

I saw that 2018 omnibus movie version with my cousin in Boston.
