- The ALCO RS-3 is a 1,600 hp B-B diesel-electric locomotive manufactured
from May 1950 to August 1956 by American Locomotive Company (ALCO)
and its subsidiary Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW). A total of 1,418 were
produced: 1,265 for American railroads, 98 for Canadian railroads, 48 for
Brazilian railroads, and seven for Mexican railroads.
The RS-3 greatly resembled the RS-1 and RS-2, but it had 100 more
horsepower thanks to its 12-cylinder, 1,600 hp ALCO Model 244 engine. It
also had some changes to the fuel system and body shape.
Much like the RS-1, many RS-3s served for decades; some are still in use
as of 2020s.

The Roundhouse 50’ High Cube, Plug Door box car is based on a common
type of box car that began appearing in large numbers in the late 1970s.
Such cars required greater overhead clearance to operate safely, but boasted
greater cubic capacity that comparable standard-height cars. These cars
commonly haul canned goods, finished rolls of paper, appliances, furniture,
and lumber.

As a LIRR fan this is a welcome model
We at Athearn are happy to hear this! We try our hardest to offer railroads that our customers have requested through our product suggestion email.
Love the 3s
And the Tsunami2 versions sound so good too!
Missouri - Illinois 1950s blue paint scheme. Same scheme as the MP ones you offered a few years back but with Missouri Illinois lettering. I'm probably the only person in the world who would buy this paint scheme but I'd buy 6.
You never know. Please consider sending us an email to athearn-productsuggestions@athearn.com and send your suggestion. If we get enough requests, you may see these in the future.
Also the Missouri Illinois units were the same phase as the Athearn carbody and would show up on the parent railroad. MoPac shops were a little better at some mechanical procedures to keep the temperamental RS3s than the MI.
Very nice, Jim! Always a treat to see the Roundhouse line featured, especially when it comes in Frisco colors! Just one correction, Frisco's reporting marks are SLSF, not SLSR. I know it was just a slip of the tungou, but I just wanted to throw that out there in case someone says anything.
Yup a slip of the tongue for sure, thanks for watching! ~ Jim
Long Island Rail Road #1519 and 1520 were actually ex-D&H RS-2 diesels. If you look at photos of the real ones you'll see RS-2 features like the battery boxes below the frame, and fuel fillers on the sides of the cabs.
Correct, we mention that at about the 3:00 minute mark.
@@AthearnModelTrains my bad for not watching the full video first. Thank you for including that information.
@@stuartaaron613 You are welcome!
Thanks Jim
Thanks for watching Michael! ~ Jim
The rendering shows the Frisco car as being Plate C, while the others either have Plate F markings or capacities that seem to match that.
Good catch, fortunately these can be updated before production.
Hello Jim hope your summer is going good.
Thank you, summer is BUSY! Stay tuned because we are a little less than a week for a major announcement! ~ Jim
Trucker just found out that trains haul pipes also.
Very nice jim
Thank you for the kind words, it is a team effort. The PD team has been busy with great releases like these. ~ Jim
Same problem with prices as with May announcements: the prices shown on the PDF sheet do NOT match those on the individual listings you get when you press VIEW ALL. Why hasn't this been fixed?
The prices on the Athearn and Horizon web sites are consumer prices while packet prices are still MSRP, Manufacture Suggested Retail Price.
Have some old blue box RS3
Remember when they were MDC kits?
Hello
Hello Jim
Hello Donnie, thanks for watching! ~ Jim

Hello Dave! ~ Jim
Most boring guy on the planet.
Please be positive
Wow, you definitely don't know me. I tried one time to be super animated when talking Athearn and most people hated it so, I deliver the information in a clear, professional manner. The videos are for information on the prototype as well as the models. This is based on feedback from our audience so we get it if is not for everyone. Hope to see you at a show sometime, until then, Happy Model Railroading. ~ Jim
