00:00 Introduction
01:29 When life is heavy
06:14 Unencumbered philosophers
09:46 Traveling light
If there’s such a thing as coincidence I was reading Epictetus last night. He says, “Don’t be puffed up with pride if you are able to provide your needs with very little cost. The first task of the person who wishes to live wisely is to free himself or herself from the confines of self-absorption. Consider how much more frugal the poor are than we, how much better they forebear hardship. If you want to live simply, do it for yourself, do it quietly, and don’t do it to impress others. Live simply for your own sake.”
ohhhhh this s a good one. thank you for sharing it!
That's beautiful! There should be more value placed on integrity and humility. I think everyone eventually learns the importance of this in life but usually learn it the hard way.
This what made Stoics different from Cynics: It’s good to be minimalist, frugal, moderate humble and able to endure poverty, but you don’t have to show and express these things to others unless it is necessarily needed to know. To Stoics philosophical practice is their own business, keeping it safe to be practiced while being able to fit as part of the humanity.
There are some 'minimalists' on youtube that should hede this advice...
Thank you for answering me so wisely!❤️
Being addicted to buying things is similar to alcohol/drug addiction or gambling. You get a little buzz everytime you buy something new that doesn't last so you have to buy more stuff over and over to get the buzz again and again.
Good observation, agreed.
Yes, it's a temporary rush
Nailed it 🎯
One strategy to counter this is to check out material from a library, you get the same dopamine rush and won't be burdening yourself with more and more things. At least this works for some people.
Like marriage.
72 and live and work for myself on any beach. Life is good. I’m grateful.
I believe you.
You can literally say your life is a beach ⛱️
My dream life ❤
@@anashappydays Go for it. Never lose faith in what you really want to do. All you need do is to create a job on the beach, sell something or perform some service. Am fortunate to be in Mexico 🇲🇽 where many work for themselves in informal activities.
Me? Have trained birds that select inspirational and motivational quotes for entertainment purposes. Been practicing my trade up and down the West Coast of Mexico from Tijuana to Cancun for the past 25 years.
Every day take a step even if it’s a small step in the direction of what you really want to do.
May I ask what you do for a living, sir?
I used to tell my daughter when we were in a store and she saw something lovely that she wanted that it's great to look at all the these beautiful things, but we don't need to own them. They will still be beautiful sitting there on the shelf and we don't have to worry about storing the stuff or taking care of it. Let someone else have to deal with all that. We can just appreciate the beauty. It worked some of the time! ☺
Beautiful. I've always appreciated the moments of luxury I've experienced, knowing that I'm not responsible for taking care of it all. Count your blessings, indeed.
Great example. This is the same sentiment that I belief we should also have around people and relationships. Non attachment but still absolutely appreciating their beauty inside and out but never convincing ourselves we need to own them.
True! We don't need to possess something to appreciate it.
It's delightful to hear how you've taught your daughter to appreciate beauty without the need to possess it.
This approach not only fosters a sense of contentment but also instills a valuable lesson in minimalism and appreciation for things as they are.
How do you think this mindset has influenced her perception of material possessions and the idea of happiness?
Just because the flowers are pretty doesn't mean we need to pick them.
I own a fold-up table, a chair, bedding, clothes, and a few books. I can move, and do move, when I want, where I want. I am not tied or chained to a home or possessions, and as a result, I live a life rich in experiences.
awesome. me too. i literally tossed out about 66k worth of toys.
what you own , owns you
You also have an electronic device, as you are able to post a comment here.
They could have borrowed a computer or used a library computer, or smart phone...but that could be true that they also own a laptop, but that is still quite minimal and impressive either way!@@pandoraeeris7860
I used to live like this but I got into cycling, rock climbing, camping, woodworking... You need a lot of gear and space to enjoy such hobbies and sometimes I feel the weight of these things weighing me down. Fortunately everything can be sold and bought again so it helps also to not become too attached to things, while also allowing yourself to enjoy them periodically.
Do you have any children yet?
Minimalism goes hand in hand with doing your best to keep life simple. Keeping it simple on purpose made me so much happier!
One of my favourite quotes from Diogenes is "It is the privilege of the gods to want nothing, and of godlike men to want little". I used to have this mindset of "wanting/needing more" just in case I need them (when I need them). But then I realised I was just tormenting myself with the idea that I will never have enough. So I attempted to cut through things I don't need slowly. And yeah now I find joy in having little (or enough, in this case).
I've always felt that we live in a world that constantly tells us we don't have enough, and we'll never be enough. It's up to our self-realisation to break away from this cycle I guess.
I grew up having varying little, not living day by day but easily week by week. So seeing other people having a lot more then me made me want more “like an addition”. I worked to that end to the point of burnout, now I’m trying to get rid of all this stuff so I can live a better and more simple life. WOW!! - What a waste of time and resources.
Love everything about your comment ❤️
I love this, thank you for sharing.
You will own nothing and be happy. Be sure you don’t plant any vegetables either because you want the government to control that part of your life too.
Stoicism rocks. No excuse to be stupid!
It’s ok to own things as we all need food and a place to sleep at night, but not becoming attached to those things is key
How relative wealth is. For some, being able to travel between countries is a luxury
Absolutely true! 👍
It also requires money (sometimes so little but ok)
@@dunjabakic4012 From here to New York a plane ticket costs $649. 😀👍
I earn $490 and it's not enough to make ends meet.😓👎
I'll have to use my imagination. 😁😁😋
Of course it's a luxury, try and work for 500$ per month, you will hardly get enough to pay rents and to eat, definitely not thinking about traveling to different country.
@@MasmydaMusyThat's the reality for most of us. The idea of traveling to another country is simply impossible, light or not. 🙁 Thank you for explaining it so precisely.👌
So Socrates didn't wear shoes. I suspect he didn't have to make the 2-hour walk from his house to work. He also did not have to pay for electricity, water, internet, etc. For him, it shouldn't have been difficult to go lightly through life. 🤔
What I do know is that he used to surround himself with young and beautiful male apprentices.
To talk about philosophy, of course. 😁
Greetings from Chile! 👍
I'm an extreme minimalist. The opposite of a hoarder. Having too many material possessions gives me stress.
Same!
I am with you!
I'm similar. If you're not neglecting your needs and you're balanced in life then you're fine. The rest is just people's opinions. I find it usually makes them feel better about their attachment to stuff when they make your minimalist lifestyle sound crazy. 💪
Do you sometimes get stressed from trying to have to be so minimalistic?
Nice
Backpacking was the experience that taught me that I don't need anything beyond a 50L backpack.
Every vacation has been different since.
I went from a 65L backpack to a 100L backpack...my burdens continue to grow. 😂
@@pandoraeeris7860 More luxury items or just food? :)
I know a guy who had 35kg backpack for the Pyrenees but it was mostly a lot of food (he likes to cook, and I just take dehydrated)
And to be fair - mine was 58L.
Haha cool mine is 40L and I'm 162cm tall. And a mother
@@Rig_JW
I like having plenty of clothing.
@@pandoraeeris7860 And a refrigerator for my insulin, and a shower every day, and decent shelter from the weather, and a reliable vehicle, and room to plant my own vegetables for myself in the summer, and a room to store food and water, and two cat trees and toys for my one cat, toys for my dog and a big comfortable California king bed just for me and my little dog. 😂
Thoreau said something to the effect we don’t own things, things own us. Many levels of meaning there.
After my separation i have occasional talks with my ex about my stuff still with her. It reminds me how much things i have acquired and never missed. I just forgot about them. That proves that attachment is temporary and once you don't have them anymore it is not a problem. Also because of a health issue i can't eat many things. You can still live well without meat or wine or beer. I still miss them but eating light is also a blessing. Less is more is a famous one liner. And its true
I am doing the same. Going to the mall, looking at things while saying "look at all these things that I do not need."
I go in and start thinking- more stuff for the landfill. 😵💫
I start feeling overwhelmed and anxious. Who buys all this stuff?
But you have a vr 🗣️
I just went through a home sale and had to scale down to a single bedroom and minimal storage space in a shed. I sold, gave away, recycled and threw away everything else. Much happier.❤️
I love the comment, "Be light between the ears." My mantra for life.
'Thank you for watching.'
Thank you for creating
I’ve been practicing minimalism over a decade now and I’m still impressed with how little I really need and live with. I still remember having excess skincare and bath products and now I literally have empty draws. It’s always a work in progress with clothes (I think it comes with the territory of being a girl) and I’m always thinking of how to pair down. It’s so refreshing! Not only am I not overwhelmed with items and don’t have to dig for anything, I have less to keep up with and I make easier/quicker decisions.
0:15... "I love going there to look at all the things I'm perfectly happy without."
Lovely video. To me, travelling light also means divesting ourselves of unfulfilling human relations which drain us of our time and energy.
A major inspiration for me was when one of my professors made a side remark in his lecture about his youth, and having only enough to fill two foot lockers. He had such a smile on his face, that it changed my outlook of having things.
No car or even a bicycle?
@@CarlCampbell he didn't elaborate; personally, a car is indispensable where I am.
Awesome! Less is more and minimalism is the best way to live life
I remember having a Minecraft world where I didn’t build a home and just spent my time walking/riding across the world. I’d make stuff along the way and only carry what could fit in my inventory. I def recommend it. It can be pretty fun
Minecraft has a ridiculously huge inventory though for what it is. Have you seen the videos of the guy KurtJMac just travelling through Minecraft spawn to "The Farlands" he started 13 years ago and I think he keeps it minimal
Bro i just wanted to say THANK U
I watch most of your videos
Whenever I feel anxious or sad Or something just isn't feeling the way I want to feel about it and it really helps a lot.
I truly appreciate ur effort and dedication u put on to yours video
And the background music are just so calming
I would close my eyes, relax myself and listen to your voice chanting those magical words
And i would be more relax and chill than ever
I know videos like this doesn't get much views and it seems boring to a lot of people but pliz keep on making more videos it really helps a lot 👍
Einzelganger, it was year 1983 I decided to travel from Sacramento California Airport to Cincinnati Ohio Airport to see my older sister there was no UA-cam I recall thinking I only want 1 bag to take so
I roll my cloths up put all in one duffel bag my relative drop me off at the airport I took a jet plane left in morning had dinner with my older sister that evening that was my very first jet plane flight I was in my 20's. It was scary and exciting, yet I got to see high above the earth so great of experience.
I learned about traveling light without knowing about anybody else input. From that year on I'd always traveled light or stay home. I love staying home. Happy New Year 2024 Thanks for your video.
I watched this video over 230 times and it had a profound effect on me. I gave away all my possessions and quit my job. Giving away items became an addiction. I even threw away my toothbrush and underwear. I now walk around with only a loin cloth. Then I realised why keep the cloth? I now make a loin cloth out of toilet paper from public toilets each morning. I spend my time running from the mall security guards. Fortunately because of my lack of possessions my speed stats are high and the guard is fat.
I don't have a lot of material things, but there are so many recurring thoughts I just can't seem to let go of
Do the recurring thoughts serve you well? If not, have a talk with yourself about how they don't hold value to who you are now and who you'd like to become and remove them just like the material things. Fill your time with useful activities, volunteer, exercise. If you are doing things that fulfill your mind and spirit during your day... the other things will fade away as you pay them less and less mind.
Mindfulness and meditation is the cure for that.
Einzelganger you truly are a gem
It's really awesome the feeling of getting rid of all unnecessary stuff. Everything I have fits in a backpack and one handbag. It has been like this for five years. When I want to move or travel I just get everything packed up.
The heaviest things to cut loose, are the ones you love.
Loneliness doesn't come from being by yourself, it comes from those around you.
I dont think loneliness comes from those around you it comes from within. I get what you mean tho. I am alone but i dont feel lonely. Others make me feel lonely because of my differences. But cutting off loved ones to come after some philosophical ideal should be the very last thing to do before you go to another country alone or whatever man. Because we survived in tribes back in the days. If you dont "need" ur parents anymore then dont cut them off to become a stoic man or whatever. You will still need people even alone, maybe just for societal goods ot services. Please dont miss the point.
Unless with things you love you mean weed or cigs or pc or whatever, then go for it free yourself
Solitude = originates from self.
Loneliness = originates from others (close to you).
Isolation = originates from society.
My siblings have become religious extremists; I don't even recognize them anymore. They have devolved into seething toxic balls of hate & division. My parents were smart, positive and accepting people. Religion has destroyed my brothers and sisters. I had to let them go because we are strangers.
i love myself=i'm always with a loved one. & one person's lonliness is another persons solitude. i prefer solitude, but whatever.....
Thank you for this video. You always bring me back to my inner core when I get sucked into the simulation. ❤
Thank you for this talk. Travelling light (in a broad sense) was my wisest decision. I'm disabled and neirodivergent, and chronic fatigue and overload simply doesn't leave me much resources to deal with lots of possessions. I perceive things like clothes or utensils as instruments for living, and having less choices helps to prevent decision fatigue while being able to concentrate on quality of the objects - in the end, they serve longer and save me lots of time and money (I don't need to shop that often, which is exhausting). There's so much information and just plain noise nowadays, and going minimal leaves plenty of space for unwinding and digesting all the info. Thanks to your videos on minimalism I realised what and how much I really need, and it partially helped with my chronic anxiety. Thank you.
At the same time having some stash of food really helps with visiting a shop more rarely lol
But I love all my physical books! Even though they have an entire room to themselves! :)
That’s ok
Thank you my friend. I am currently going through a rough time in my life at present, but after seeing and hearing this has brought me peace of mind and hope. Take care everyone.
I realised many years ago that just because something is beautiful doesn't mean I need to own it. I
Dankjewel daarvoor!!
Many fear losing their roots and never seek the experience of wings. I find balance between these varies greatly from one individual to another. For myself the wings always felt necessary, even if only a dream back when I was younger.
If it wasn't for all my stuff, I would have to admit that it's me that's in my way!
I am recently going through a life where i am trying minimalist approach, and it's giving me mental freedom
Nice video, love the theme of lightness, and minimalism, but you can only travel with such few belongings so freely, because you still rely on other people or businesses to have the usual comforts ready for you to use. That's something that always makes me think to reduce my living standard rather than just my package so to speak.
" but you can only travel with such few belongings so freely, because you still rely on other people or businesses to have the usual comforts ready for you to use. "
I see your point, but if he pays for it he helps that business make money. So what is wrong with that? What I really don't like is when people travel basically with nothing and take advantage of other people. "somebody will give me some food. Somebody will let me sleep in his house, use their bathroom etc.." It is disgusting to me. That person who is helping works hard to have what he has and there comes some "free spirit who doesn't need anything" and just uses uses resources of other people.. I see this A LOT nowadays.. But that is not the case of this youtube creator obviously. He has plenty of money and he can buy what he needs on the spot.. Nothing wrong with that at all.. The only think I would add is that maybe this youtube creator is not realizing that not all people want to travel and be free like that. There is a lot of people who have a dream of staying at one nice place in their home with their family and live there happy until they die..
@@jirihutecka9020agreed, and to "travel light," one must be able to travel, at all. Twenty years ago, people may have been enslaved by debt because of their glutting themselves with things they don't need. Now, most people slave away just to remain housed, fed, and clothed.
It does take some money - some - to travel light.
@bobtaylor170 Somewhere I read a quote from Gandhi along the lines: 'It costs my friends a lot for me to live poor.'
In some ways, we always live off our environment, there is no way around it.
@@Xaver-dh8nh yup.
@@jirihutecka9020sim, eu odeio viajar, já me mudei 6 vezes e é muito ruim. Quero viver em uma casa até o resto da minha vida, tendo apenas o necessário para viver uma vida leve.
When I used to travel alot for work, I would almost always use just one carry-on and would wash my limited clothing supply in my hotel sink as necessary. No stowed baggage worries! 😁😁
Way to miss the point.
@@thefonzkissm-and just how did I miss the point of a minimal approach to life? Triggered much?
@@thefonzkisslmao you missed the point.
Meneer einzelganger has not yet discovered ghetto washing of clothes. If he did, then he would pack two shirts aswell. 2 socks. Etc.
I do the same.
Just put the wet clothes between some towels. Stand on it, jump for joy, and you have drained enough water from them so they are dry the next day. 🎉
Yeah me too wash clothing in my hotel sink😂
Nietzsches idea of the eternal recurrence is the perfect idea to let go of these burdens I feel!
Yup, also a minimalist mindset idea that comes back in Stoic philosophy is the following: Seneca would sometimes go days without eating or drinking anything but bread and water, even though he was rich. Just to make it clear to himself that he could live with less. Love this idea!
A veces tratamos de llenar con cosas el vacío que se tiene en el alma.
I'm a bit of a minimalist, myself. Well said. Love the channel.
With the lack of stability due to cost of housing I have learned to not participate in consumerism anymore. I am continuing to get rid of material things.
true. I found years ago that no collection hobby is worth it. All are heavy baggage. My only collection right now is digital like videos or photos but even then, it can be baggage sometimes by the need to update or maintain it with new data. I still like having my own house and car in the future but it would likely be small or big but simple, so that is easy to maintain, not of a big deal whatever happens to it.
It took me many years to come to the realization that modern day “collecting” is a socially acceptable form or hoarding.
@@robertjones9006 Agreed. It is an excuse to justify hoarding to compensate for a need, whatever that need is.

This video is very helpful to me as someone who has subscribed for a long time. It came at a great time, as I was just planning a 3 week trip and deciding if I should bring that extra luggage case with me or not. I've decided to travel light, taking only a large backpack and small carry-on satchel~
I enjoy your videos. Certainly, there are days that I wish that I could travel lighter. On those days, I reframe and focus on what is important in my life. And what is important are my responsibilities to my family, my job and to my self. When I keep these priorities clear and focused, then I travel lighter.
Wonderful episode. Thank you
I'd also add that traveling light is also a great reminder of our co-dependancy, between human beings: you can't take on a plane and not have cutlery or food grown without someone else doing it for you. Lightness is not full autonomy, it's a lesson to look at others' value as well.
Another magnificent video. Full of superb observations.
Especially about family, kids etc.😊
Great work brother 💯❤️
Stuff isn’t bad in itself, the attachment to it is. I like cars and have noticed that the more expensive it is, the less likely people are to drive it on track or work on it themselves. This is what makes the Japanese car culture so appealing: it proposes relatively cheap machinery that you can play with, without stressing too much about costs. On the other end of the spectrum are those who buy a Porsche as an “investment” and freak out about the resale value.
Really precious advice
One of my favourite things to do is say loudly in a Walmart or mall on boxing day “socrates walked into a market place and said, look at all the things i don’t need” and watch for anyone that looks at me.
I suspect Socrates would find that silly as Im guessing part of doing that is to try and change people. If other people want to buy a load of crap...let them
@@skyblazeeterno your guess is a good way to stay ignorant i suppose. It actually points out the obsession people have with acquiring more than one needs wasting ones life accumulating trinkets and bobbles to display them for self gratification only to miss out on the true value of living
