If there’s such a thing as coincidence I was reading Epictetus last night. He says, “Don’t be puffed up with pride if you are able to provide your needs with very little cost. They will still be beautiful sitting there on the shelf and we don't have to worry about storing the stuff or taking care of it. Let someone else have to deal with all that. We can just appreciate the beauty. It worked some of the time! ☺
Beautiful. I've always appreciated the moments of luxury I've experienced, knowing that I'm not responsible for taking care of it all. Count your blessings, indeed.
Great example. This is the same sentiment that I belief we should also have around people and relationships. Non attachment but still absolutely appreciating their beauty inside and out but never convincing ourselves we need to own them.
It's delightful to hear how you've taught your daughter to appreciate beauty without the need to possess it. This approach not only fosters a sense of contentment but also instills a valuable lesson in minimalism and appreciation for things as they are. How do you think this mindset has influenced her perception of material possessions and the idea of happiness?
Being addicted to buying things is similar to alcohol/drug addiction or gambling. You get a little buzz everytime you buy something new that doesn't last so you have to buy more stuff over and over to get the buzz again and again.

I grew up having varying little, not living day by day but easily week by week. So seeing other people having a lot more then me made me want more “like an addition”. I worked to that end to the point of burnout, now I’m trying to get rid of all this stuff so I can live a better and more simple life. WOW!! - What a waste of time and resources.
You will own nothing and be happy. Be sure you don’t plant any vegetables either because you want the government to control that part of your life too.
I’ve been practicing minimalism over a decade now and I’m still impressed with how little I really need and live with. I still remember having excess skincare and bath products and now I literally have empty draws. It’s always a work in progress with clothes (I think it comes with the territory of being a girl) and I’m always thinking of how to pair down. It’s so refreshing! Not only am I not overwhelmed with items and don’t have to dig for anything, I have less to keep up with and I make easier/quicker decisions.
I own a fold-up table, a chair, bedding, clothes, and a few books. I can move, and do move, when I want, where I want. I am not tied or chained to a home or possessions, and as a result, I live a life rich in experiences.
They could have borrowed a computer or used a library computer, or smart phone...but that could be true that they also own a laptop, but that is still quite minimal and impressive either way!@@pandoraeeris7860
I used to live like this but I got into cycling, rock climbing, camping, woodworking... You need a lot of gear and space to enjoy such hobbies and sometimes I feel the weight of these things weighing me down. Fortunately everything can be sold and bought again so it helps also to not become too attached to things, while also allowing yourself to enjoy them periodically.
After my separation i have occasional talks with my ex about my stuff still with her. It reminds me how much things i have acquired and never missed. I just forgot about them. That proves that attachment is temporary and once you don't have them anymore it is not a problem. Also because of a health issue i can't eat many things. You can still live well without meat or wine or beer. I still miss them but eating light is also a blessing. Less is more is a famous one liner. And its true

I dont think loneliness comes from those around you it comes from within. I get what you mean tho. I am alone but i dont feel lonely. Others make me feel lonely because of my differences. But cutting off loved ones to come after some philosophical ideal should be the very last thing to do before you go to another country alone or whatever man. Because we survived in tribes back in the days. If you dont "need" ur parents anymore then dont cut them off to become a stoic man or whatever. You will still need people even alone, maybe just for societal goods ot services. Please dont miss the point.

I read and applied Marie Kondo’s book when it came out. I found my bliss. It is an ongoing process and I struggle sometimes but I have maintained my lifestyle pretty well. I still look for things to donate, discard, or repurpose. The only thing I’m not minimalist about are animals. My beloved 5 cats and 2 dogs are my joy.
This minimalistic metaphor is actually why I'm actually starting to prefer buying things digitally (like ebooks, music and movies) rather than buying them in their physical formats. I love having them all in the hand of my smartphone with headphones, and Kindle for the ebooks.
I'm smiling right now because when I was playing Skyrim, my very main activities were : exploring, walking, contemplating the landscapes, cutting wood, managing the house, being with "family", chatting with inhabitants. So true. The "mining and collecting into the harvest bag" mentality ruined games for me back then. Since moving to an exploration and admiration mindset, it just came to life!
I remember having a Minecraft world where I didn’t build a home and just spent my time walking/riding across the world. I’d make stuff along the way and only carry what could fit in my inventory. I def recommend it. It can be pretty fun

Einzelganger, it was year 1983 I decided to travel from Sacramento California Airport to Cincinnati Ohio Airport to see my older sister there was no UA-cam I recall thinking I only want 1 bag to take so I roll my cloths up put all in one duffel bag my relative drop me off at the airport I took a jet plane left in morning had dinner with my older sister that evening that was my very first jet plane flight I was in my 20's. It was scary and exciting, yet I got to see high above the earth so great of experience. I learned about traveling light without knowing about anybody else input. From that year on I'd always traveled light or stay home. I love staying home. Happy New Year 2024 Thanks for your video.
Thank you my friend. I am currently going through a rough time in my life at present, but after seeing and hearing this has brought me peace of mind and hope. Take care everyone.
It's really awesome the feeling of getting rid of all unnecessary stuff. Everything I have fits in a backpack and one handbag. It has been like this for five years. When I want to move or travel I just get everything packed up.
Thank you for this talk. Travelling light (in a broad sense) was my wisest decision. I'm disabled and neirodivergent, and chronic fatigue and overload simply doesn't leave me much resources to deal with lots of possessions. I perceive things like clothes or utensils as instruments for living, and having less choices helps to prevent decision fatigue while being able to concentrate on quality of the objects - in the end, they serve longer and save me lots of time and money (I don't need to shop that often, which is exhausting). There's so much information and just plain noise nowadays, and going minimal leaves plenty of space for unwinding and digesting all the info. Thanks to your videos on minimalism I realised what and how much I really need, and it partially helped with my chronic anxiety. Thank you. At the same time having some stash of food really helps with visiting a shop more rarely lol
Dankjewel daarvoor!!
I'd also add that traveling light is also a great reminder of our co-dependancy, between human beings: you can't take on a plane and not have cutlery or food grown without someone else doing it for you. Lightness is not full autonomy, it's a lesson to look at others' value as well.
true. I found years ago that no collection hobby is worth it. All are heavy baggage. My only collection right now is digital like videos or photos but even then, it can be baggage sometimes by the need to update or maintain it with new data. I still like having my own house and car in the future but it would likely be small or big but simple, so that is easy to maintain, not of a big deal whatever happens to it.

I suspect Socrates would find that silly as Im guessing part of doing that is to try and change people. If other people want to buy a load of crap...let them

"You will own nothing and you will be happy." ... is something one may conclude BUT we don't live in a vacuum and some ownership is vital (like, ownership of you own body) as well as knowledge, skills and all the material stuff you want to care about - not just owning it for the sake of status... like your workshop where you create meaningful value for others.
Yup, also a minimalist mindset idea that comes back in Stoic philosophy is the following: Seneca would sometimes go days without eating or drinking anything but bread and water, even though he was rich. Just to make it clear to himself that he could live with less. Love this idea!
I got into the minimalist lifestyle and rid myself of a lot of material possessions. But for me, the thing that rings truest is living lightly between the ears. Psychological baggage weighs much more than the physical. Now I find more of a balance, having nice objects that bring joy to me and working to free myself of more and more mental garbage.

This is my goal from now on… I’m in my 40s, and just healed from the big C. I’ve come to realize all these “things” in my home, in my work office mean very little, it’s just STUFF. I have gone years without using 90% of this “stuff”. Can’t wait to clean it all out!
Stuff isn’t bad in itself, the attachment to it is. I like cars and have noticed that the more expensive it is, the less likely people are to drive it on track or work on it themselves. This is what makes the Japanese car culture so appealing: it proposes relatively cheap machinery that you can play with, without stressing too much about costs. On the other end of the spectrum are those who buy a Porsche as an “investment” and freak out about the resale value.
I went from a house to a cabin to a trailer over 6 years. I have had to reduce my personal items i thought i needed multiple times. A difficult weary process. And have learned storage is a sin. Paying for storage is horrendous and stupid.
This is why when I see articles or videos on "why minimalism failed" or Minimalism is dead etc I just don't understand it. Having less things and focusing on being content with what you have is so freeing both mentally and physically. It also is the perfect solution to consumerism and debt. Imagine a war or natural disaster like the volcanos in Hawaii or Iceland or forest/brush fires that destroy homes and whole communities. A simple minimalist lifestyle means you can escape with more of your stuff more quickly and easily and with less regret, loss and have an easier time replacing anything that may have been lost. The same mentality is a comfort should you lose your job, get a divorce or lose a loved one, need to move etc....
You'd be amazed at how little you really need especially when traveling back during the great recession of 2008 I became a cross country truck driver and after about 6 months to save money and the fact that I was only home once a month I gave up my apartment and decided that when I would come back home I just stayed with friends or family or rent a hotel room this saved me a lot of money but I basically lived in my sleeper birth and if you don't know what a sleeper birthday is it is the compartment behind the drivers cabin that allows the driver to sleep inside the truck it's about the size of a large walk-in closet it's large enough for you to stand up in but that's about it it contains one small closet and then a small pantry and then the double sleeper fold out beds so for three years that was my life everything I own I could fit into a walk-in closet and it was pretty amazing Plus I saved a lot of money I have to admit there was something almost comforting about the fact of knowing that everything I really needed in life could fit in a closet in addition it was also amazing the fact that every day I woke up at a different place in a different state it's amazing to wake up and have your breakfast in your rig you open up the curtain and you are at a truck stop in the Rockies and then a week later you may be having your lunch at the port of Pascal Mississippi right off the ocean it was a very cool experience to know that basically every morning you could have your breakfast at a different location in the country.

I like the analogy of traveling light. Thinking about my old clothing that I still hang onto because it reminds me of the past. The past is definitely something that I never want to forget. because of how intense it was but I know that I’m going to have to in order to enjoy the present. If I buy a new shirt today, then It can represent me in the present moment, more efficiently, In the back of my mind by collecting the old outfits, I can always slip back into a calmer time. If I let go of all that baggage right here, then the load I carry would be much lighter I should be able to focus.

Do you have any children yet?
After my separation i have occasional talks with my ex about my stuff still with her. It reminds me how much things i have acquired and never missed. I just forgot about them. That proves that attachment is temporary and once you don't have them anymore it is not a problem. Also because of a health issue i can't eat many things. You can still live well without meat or wine or beer. I still miss them but eating light is also a blessing. Less is more is a famous one liner. And its true
Backpacking was the experience that taught me that I don't need anything beyond a 50L backpack.

Loneliness doesn't come from being by yourself, it comes from those around you.
Unless with things you love you mean weed or cigs or pc or whatever, then go for it free yourself
Solitude = originates from self.
Loneliness = originates from others (close to you).
Isolation = originates from society.
My siblings have become religious extremists; I don't even recognize them anymore. They have devolved into seething toxic balls of hate & division. My parents were smart, positive and accepting people. Religion has destroyed my brothers and sisters. I had to let them go because we are strangers.
i love myself=i'm always with a loved one. & one person's lonliness is another persons solitude. i prefer solitude, but whatever.....
How relative wealth is. For some, being able to travel between countries is a luxury
Absolutely true! 👍
It also requires money (sometimes so little but ok)

Of course it's a luxury, try and work for 500$ per month, you will hardly get enough to pay rents and to eat, definitely not thinking about traveling to different country.
@@MasmydaMusyThat's the reality for most of us. The idea of traveling to another country is simply impossible, light or not. 🙁 Thank you for explaining it so precisely.👌
So Socrates didn't wear shoes. I suspect he didn't have to make the 2-hour walk from his house to work. He also did not have to pay for electricity, water, internet, etc. For him, it shouldn't have been difficult to go lightly through life. 🤔
What I do know is that he used to surround himself with young and beautiful male apprentices.

Lovely video. To me, travelling light also means divesting ourselves of unfulfilling human relations which drain us of our time and energy.
A simple life that had nothing to do with the main quest of the game🤭🙃 I wish I could do yoga also but...

Minecraft has a ridiculously huge inventory though for what it is. Have you seen the videos of the guy KurtJMac just travelling through Minecraft spawn to "The Farlands" he started 13 years ago and I think he keeps it minimal
Einzelganger you truly are a gem
Einzelganger, it was year 1983 I decided to travel from Sacramento California Airport to Cincinnati Ohio Airport to see my older sister there was no UA-cam I recall thinking I only want 1 bag to take so
I roll my cloths up put all in one duffel bag my relative drop me off at the airport I took a jet plane left in morning had dinner with my older sister that evening that was my very first jet plane flight I was in my 20's.
I am recently going through a life where i am trying minimalist approach, and it's giving me mental freedom
I don't have a lot of material things, but there are so many recurring thoughts I just can't seem to let go of
Mindfulness and meditation is the cure for that.
Try some yoga too. Mindfulness is good.
Journaling helps me with this.
Bạn nói đúng.
If it wasn't for all my stuff, I would have to admit that it's me that's in my way!
Thank you for this video. You always bring me back to my inner core when I get sucked into the simulation. ❤
It took me many years to come to the realization that modern day “collecting” is a socially acceptable form or hoarding.
@@Jonesimedes-q6f Agreed. It is an excuse to justify hoarding to compensate for a need, whatever that need is.

One of my favourite things to do is say loudly in a Walmart or mall on boxing day “socrates walked into a market place and said, look at all the things i don’t need” and watch for anyone that looks at me.
I suspect Socrates would find that silly as Im guessing part of doing that is to try and change people. If other people want to buy a load of crap...let them
@@skyblazeeterno your guess is a good way to stay ignorant i suppose. It actually points out the obsession people have with acquiring more than one needs wasting ones life accumulating trinkets and bobbles to display them for self gratification only to miss out on the true value of living
Obviously, he meant things outside of oneself. If you didn’t get that…
Nietzsches idea of the eternal recurrence is the perfect idea to let go of these burdens I feel!
Very good 👍

If I buy a new shirt today, then It can represent me in the present moment, more efficiently,
In the back of my mind by collecting the old outfits, I can always slip back into a calmer time. If I let go of all that baggage right here, then the load I carry would be much lighter I should be able to focus.
