- Humans often overburden themselves with all kinds of material possessions, buying much more than we need to stay alive and thriving. Consumerism comes with a price as well, as it requires resources to keep up with the other consumers.
Therefore, many people are willing to work themselves into an early grave, and simply accumulate, what we could call, ‘extensions of themselves’; extensions of their egos. “I have more, so I am more,” they tend to think, so by increasing their possessions they increase their sense of self.
But there’s a counter-movement to the consumerist society we’re living in, known as minimalism. Minimalists are people who turn their backs to overconsumption and decide to live with no more than necessary.
Aside from it being a lifestyle trend today, minimalism is a concept that people have been practicing for centuries. There’s a sense of freedom in simplicity, and not owning much, which many sages and philosophers have experienced throughout the ages. They saw that possessions don’t define who we are and that the ongoing pursuit of external things prevents us from experiencing life to the fullest.
This video examines the philosophical side of minimalism and explores why more is less and why less is more, and why letting go is true wealth (minimalist philosophy for simple living).

I have always been attracted to boats but someone once told me the two happiest days for a boat owner are the day you buy it and the day you sell it.
Only own a boat if you own a business that requires it and even then it might make more sense to lease it for tax purposes. But hey, the neighbor has a boat, so I guess i need one too, right?

Went to visit my grandmother who lived a simple life, I never realized how rich she was and how much she had invested her time well! She had many friends and family that would come daily to her house to watch over her. They all would tell about the impact she had made in their lives and how much they loved her.
Then seeing it as an adult I realize she had invested her life well loving and helping others! When she passed so many where there to share and remember her. She had no money she never needed it.
My mother told me that a bird came through the door to sing on the moment of her passing!
The gift of her life is one of my most prized possessions.

It’s true. I got a very basic coffin when my daughter passed. When I was asked why I got such a plain coffin, I responded, my kid doesn’t care and neither would I if our roles had been reversed.

It’s better to be alone than to share your life with someone who’s full of strife or someone who wants to drag you down to make themselves feel better.
I’m often perplexed in our modern age by the conceptualisation of loneliness as not emulating the consumerist socialites who want to define society in their own image. Any wander can result in a nod, smile, or verbal greeting, and even an impromptu conversation. Yet in some cities that’s frowned upon as people rush to their next social fix. I think dragging up, as motivational gurus might be described, is equally toxic, as you can lose your identity to displays of the success they promote as ideals. True friends will meet with no interest in occupying spaces where they can display their consumerist credentials by buying more drinks or consumables. I think they’re few, if any, in today’s society.

I work part time on purpose so I can actually enjoy my life instead of work myself to death. I lead a simple life on purpose. My friends think I’m strange as I don’t want a big house and all the stuff, but I often find I’m a lot more positive and happy than they seem to be.

Minimalism has definitely improved my mental health, happiness and overall lifestyle. I don’t find myself craving so much and my headspace is really light and relaxed ever since this way of living came into my life. It also made me appreciate the smallest things and the moments that matter the most in my life.

I 'm not a minimalist, but I think the perfect balance is to only spend money on things you like and not to impress people. Think about where you're buying something solely to impress people, you'd be in a much better place to cut those things out.
For example, I work hard and save money to go travelling, because I want to enrich myself with the experience, not to take glamorous pictures for Instagram. When I'm travelling long distances sometimes I have bought business class plane tickets, but that was only because I'm a big guy and needed to sleep on the plane which would have been better for my health and my circadian rhythm, I did NOT take any pictures of it to try and make anyone jealous.
Nothing wrong with spending money but you need to make sure it's for the right reasons, to enrich the health and enjoyment of you and those you care about. Spending money on things to impress people is a bad idea, trust me I learnt the hard way.
Spending money on things to impress others is something only rich people can do, normal people won't do that because they don't have the money to do so in the first place.

I recently had a real experience where I suddenly was very aware that all the things I have are only being borrowed. Everything is temporary. I've always understood this from a philosophical standpoint, but it weirdly felt VERY real and almost as if I was understanding it for the first time. Not sure how to articulate it other than it was as if all at once, I spontaneously detached from everything, after years and years of paring down.

Growing up as a child in a poor family, we saw the children of other families get wonderful toys... Our parents were cruel and selfish and the children came last... Hugs and Love were not given freely but were earned thru pleasing the adult; but taken away at the whim of the adult... many families suffered this reality but Family Secrets keep everyone in the belief they are the only ones who live this way. While less is more for an adult, all children need so little to feel fully satiated which are the bare essentials of food , water, Nurturing, Love and Patience a soft touch and a smile go a long way for a child.

Haven't had a TV in 4 years,don't miss it. Eat well on less than $10 a day,might eat out once a month as a treat. I have what I need don't worry about what I want. Got here by circumstances rather than choice. My only selfish indulgence is my 1992 Lincoln. Gave up driving a computer, get as much joy working on it as I do driving it. Needed a nice low ride my 13 year old dog could manage. Took an early pension. Ex cleaning me out was the impetus for change. Cold beer,wet dog and a fish on the line plenty for me

It pains having people close to you doing this. Bro keeps buying things I know he will toss away in the very close future. He's cluttering himself with useless, short lived stuff. The sad thing is you seemingly can't force his eyes open, he has to realize it himself from within.
King Solomon wrote about this in Ecclesiastes 1:14: :I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind."
As a king, Solomon had done and seen it all. After all his experiences.. Solomon declared that everything was meaningless and purposeless. It was like chasing after the wind. You can strive harder, run faster, but the wind cannot be caught. It will blow right through your hands even if you try to touch it.
Solomon was referring to material pursuits which take up the majority of our time here on earth. Materially..we can never have enough. There is always an appetite for more. So like chasing after the wind, having as much material wealth as we desire is an unachievable goal.
On the other hand, spiritual pursuits like loving God and keeping His commandments, repentance, studying His word are meaningful and valuable. It’s the mindless pursuit of physical pleasure and material gain that Solomon was speaking out against. It’s a waste of time and waste of a life.
Im one of those people i have worked so hard that i got badly sick n also got involved in a motorcycle accident which crushed my left hand joint im still struggling but now think it's better to let it go

I found I had far more than I need, once I stopped buying more I found I didn't want more but wanted less, letting go of what I don't need gave me a sense of calm and inner peace. I love the simplicity of life that not owning more than one needs brings. 🙏

While watching this video, I realized that what drives me to overwork is not material, but rather the anticipation of meeting basic needs in the U.S. when I'm older/retired. Working requires more consumption - transportation, presentable clothing, etc. When I took a year off of work, I consumed very little.

True, so many old buildings could be repaired and new mechanical. But I see some cities in decay instead of fixing up, that allow neighborhoods to become low income and it just decays. They can redo them as shelters, condos, lofts etc.

It isn't possessions that cause the issue, it's your attachment to them. Once you come to grips with the fact that you'll wind up losing EVERYTHING you have (including yourself), you'll know peace and be able to enjoy whatever it is you have.
Just like attachment breeds possessions, so (needless) possessions breed attachment.

Just like some people can enjoy a glass of wine here and there (and reap the rewards without the pain), so to can some of us treat possessions. If you can't, then it's your own addiction that's the problem, not the possessions themselves 💯
@Priyojit chatterjee People overthink this topic all the time. Possessions are more than simply "tools", they can also be sources of fun and play. If you're unable to use your possessions in the proper way, then by all means stay away from them (just like alcoholics should stay away from alcohol). But, if you've got the right relationship with them, then use them for the happiness they can accentuate (notice I said accentuate, not create).
I can't remember what comedian said this, but the quote is "people say money can't buy happiness, but I've never seen anyone frown on a wave runner". The key is to use your possessions, and not let them use you 💯

I've been a minimalist since I moved out of my parents home. One of the many things I have come to terms with is that most of the I don't care about getting physical gifts (unless it's something I truly needed), I would much rather spend time with the people I love. That's a better gift, giving me your time

Similarly needs for food, water, health care transportation and education need to be met for a lifetime.
Things CAN wind up owning you. And they can also provide you with comfort and security. Rather than swearing off "things," I suggest that they be accumulated wisely rather than eschewed altogether.
True wealth is having health and resources. Letting go is not chasing more than you have. Different situations.
A way to live minimalistic is also to not buy things you don't need. Your apartment doesn't have to be an empty hall with one chair and a window, just don't buy useless shit you don't need. You'll save so much money, use it for quality food and whatever your hobbies are
My hobbies are where all the troublesome material possessions lie. Lol and oh well!

This video really spoke to me. I live in my van which definitely requires a minimalist mindset. I can work a job I love and have side projects which fulfill me. I get to do this because I don't need much income. I have never been happier in my life. Zero stress. And I just see people rushing to work and then rushing back home and think, what's the point. They all have expensive cars and have to work shops they probably hate to pay for them, why?
This is great. I have learned this from experience. Objects obstruct our lives, like a road full of objects which is blocking us from going forward. People feel good when going somewhere on holiday, a large part of that good feeling is the feeling of lightness having left all of our unnecessary objects behind. I only wish I knew what I have learned from experience when I was younger. But then, I guess life is a path of learning, and of listening.
I’ve watched a lot of NDE (Near Death Experience) videos about people who went to heaven, had a life review and then came back to Earth. The one thing they ALL have in common is people said material things don’t matter at all, the only thing that matters are your relationships with people and how you treat them.
Investigating NDE and trying to extrapolate from these experiences is not a logical and won't give you the answers you're looking for. To be clear, I don't have these answers and I can assure you that not because someone experienced delusion associated with NDE that he has them
I started listening to NDE's when i was a truck driver to pass the time... i noticed the same thing.. they came back with a different mindset about their possessions, their relationships and Love... their stories are so interesting...

I found a more valuable life outside.of.chasing material goods and saw first hand how my life carried away from those who I love and wanted to be around with. In Hebrew, there is a saying: "מרבה נכסים, מרבה דאגה". (Pronounced as such: Marbe' nechasim, marbe' de'aga). In direct translation to English: "One who has many assets, has many worries". I thought it's worth a mention in the comment section, to show that these kind of ideas can be found within multiple cultures. And also because someone might find this interesting.

The more you posses things, the more efforts you'll do to maintain them, the more time you'll spend just for taking care of trivial things, and the easier you'll lose track of everything. To simplify, the more you possess, the more troubles you'll have.
By keeping only the essentials in your life, you can shift your focus on the things that truly matter, and you'll be surprised by how much time are available to make the best out of your pasions and goals. That is the definition of freedom that you're looking for.

Sharing includes music. I often feel happy with Nordic shaman music, classical, instrumental…figure out what makes you happy and find time to enjoy it alone or together
I used to get teased a whole lot for what I didn't have. Still don't know why people would want to live in a place covered wall to floor in possessions. I've got a handful of items. And thats all I need.

Over the years, I gradually found myself wanting less and less. I do collect a few small things as a hobby, but otherwise, if I was going to buy something, it needed to serve a useful purpose, or replace something that was quite worn out. I have felt the pressure from greater society to want more, but I just can't bring myself to do that; I don't want a lot of stuff. And I feel a certain sense of peace from that.
Half of getting through life is showing up, on time, and sober.

I am a minimalist and letting go is true wealth. I downsized and live a simple life. You will have more to eat better food, less debt, and more cash flow because your not worried about material possession. Less is more.

I agree but I would also add that it's much better to live in a Mansion than in a small pathetic apartment. It's all about frequency. Having a nice top apartment or Mansion is much more likely to raise your frequency and keep you in a good and positive state of mind, rather than living in your mom's basement. Life has a lot of good to offer, so I would advise taking advantage of it instead of rejecting and ignoring it.
Only poor and miserable people complain about status, wealth, and money like they "don't want it". That's a lie, they're just not able, smart, and brave enough to go get it. And that's the honest truth.

In essence I agree with your sentiments. I would add though that is easier for some to let go of lots of useless possessions than it is for others. If having less still leaves you with objects that will make life easier for you such as owning a plough and fork for growing food than that is great. Others however don't have the luxury of getting rid of objects because they are already devoid of them to the point where they are destitute. So a fair comment but one that will always be subjective on an individual's or families circumstance. The only other point I would add (and I am not inferring you don't think of this) is I am sure you have others in your life that provide you with emotional security and wellness. I do understand your point though and regarding the vast majority of wealthy countries I absolutely agree with what you are saying.
In my limited experience, I've come to realise that Letting Go is also necessary when it comes to interact and connect with people. Often times, our mind, heart and ego build up desires and fantasies to have a certain kind of relationship or exchanges with the people around us. But not everything is in your control.
Having a sense of continued detachment while still carrying out your duties and responsibilities towards them is the best way to live I can think of. And above all, to have no expectations, which is actually very hard to do. But one way various spiritual and religious paths advise us is to be concerned to be only of service towards them. For in only giving, without expecting anything back, we don't easily build up expectations waiting to be unfulfilled.
I agree, keeping only genuine people and be surrounded by people who has nothing but good intentions to you will not only give you peace of mind, but a flow of good things from a product of a good mindset.
I agree 100%. Also, never ever give away your power and autonomy. Being independent, self-reliant, and free is the most important thing in the world. If you let others take power and control over you, if you care too much and are dependent on what other people think of you, you are doomed.
And at the end of the day, you are damned if you do and damned if you don't. But I guess you would be rather damned if you do.

I got rid of EVERYTHING, all paperwork and photos, scanned what I needed, most clothes, house, car, tools. I kept one pet rock. Bought a new motorcycle, saddlebags, and tent. If It is not strapped to my motorcycle I do not own it. It is such a freeing feeling rolling aimlessly down the road knowing all I own is right behind me. I love waking up in the morning looking around my tent, or motel room, seeing all my belongings and knowing that in an hour I can be back on the road again, worry free.
I've always been minimalistic myself and developed a strong character through honest and hard work. I do want to obtain financial freedom though but not out of materialistic reasons. I'm just sick and tired of working my ass off for scraps...
I this is 100% how I feel. I am not a slave to possessions. Im also not so stupid that i dont realize that money buys freedom. I would like to not work anymore. Period. I dont need a big house, cars, newest shit. I simply dont want to HAVE to work anymore

Some one once told me that financial independence is a state of mind, now I begin to understand that I am the resource, yes sometimes I eat cup of noodles, other times money roll in. Money has nothing to do with me. I work, sometimes out of necessity.
The idea that I can just go and help a business owner sell cold soda curbside, or deliver food, etc whatever your skills are, use it, my friend, for your financial freedom.
I just want to own a couple acres of land and live in a cabin. Grow food, small amount of livestock and enough money to get the feds off my ass about property taxes.

A person is wealthy in direct relation to what they can afford to live without.
I only had my 4 kettlebells and my bass and amp as my hobbies. Taking weight training more serious and since there was a bench set laying around the house i rent at. I could not resist buying a barbell with plates and a few dumbbells. I thought might as well make some use for it. While I prefer doing more calisthenics most of the time. I feel like I wasted money but I prefer training alone and having the access to it anytime of the day without walking to the gym besides having to take the barbell and plates out of my room to the backyard. I quickly came to realize it's the discipline of putting the hours in that will give strength rather than having more options to choose from to how differently each tool will train the body a certain way. I was alot more disciplined when I had less equipment to choose from but I'm now starting to get this psychological effect called "paradox of choice"
after a boring weekend, came back to watch this video ... now grateful for the time and friends and places here ... loving the moment

IS human connection really necessary though? I often struggle with this because I feel fulfilled through my connection to myself, with nature and non human animals. I do enjoy and value short interactions and connections with strangers, but most people are too clogged up in their own issues and perceptions that a true, pure long term connection is hard to find and exhausting to pursue. Letting go of that attachment to find like minded humans has freed me even further. I don't dislike humans, I just don't feel like I need deep connections with them anymore.

Hi there, introverted person with high intrapersonal intelligence here. I enjoy a very simple life connecting to nature and animals (especially plants) and I have come to realize that I don't need to be "sociable" as it is seen in society but if you find people that have the same mindset you will truly enjoy human company. I feel full once I spend time hiking in nature with friends that believe in the same things. I usually just avoid people that I feel are too "heavy" or with a negative mindset and focus on my goals instead.
