He was an instructor at GIT when I was there, '85 to '86. He was always so mind-blowing with creative ideas and unending chops. I also was able to see him live in certain settings that he was involved with at the time. Saw him with Jeff Berlin and Vox Humana way back then. Steve Smith on drums and T. Lavitz of the Dregs on keyboards. This tune here, amazing stuff! So hip of an approach to his phrasing!
He's a stratospheric mind bender from Mars come to fracture our sensibilities with mind altering guitar and euphoric space shifting melodies. Hail the king!

Hello fellow GIT alum! 1993-94 here. Scott is an amazing instructor for sure. Loved the several Tribal Tech concerts I got to see that year. Phenomenal performances.
The best thing about Scott is that he's hardly ever just noodly.. almost everything he plays is an actual intentional phrase that ties into something else or is a complete thought, he knows exactly what it will sound like before he plays it and he never runs out of ideas.. he is far from just a 'shredder' though he is technically one of the best guitarists in the world on top of his feel and melodic sense.
I dunno. Planning out phrases wouldn't really be improvising. Improvising is playing what you hear while you hear it, init? I'd simply say: he plays what he hears, and he ends up playing very sophisticated passages because of the work he put in expanding his abilities.
@@GCKellochyeah i didn’t mean planning in advance, just knowing exactly what he’s about to play will sound like as he’s improvising.. it almost always works
I could listen to Scott play a thousand times and come away from every show hearing something I hadn't picked up on before because I was too busy being amazed by something else he did. Had the pleasure of actually seeing him live in 2006 and it is in my all time top five of all time. A completely unique and criminally underrated player. I don't hear his name mentioned nearly enough and that is a travesty.

About 20 years ago when I lived in LA, Scott used to play at a tiny club in studio City twice a month, La Ve Lee. And I went to see him every chance I had. I must have gone to see him 40 times, no exaggeration. And that's exactly how I felt. Let's really think about this, $8 to get in, park 100 feet from the door, catch him from 10 feet away and for under $20, drinks, tip, cover and gas my mind was blown every one of those times. Good times.
Off the hook! Holy crap is this guy great! I actually got introduced to Scott via his Musicians Institute videos; very simple lesson that sound insane. I had no idea he was a legend! More please...
The fact that Henderson is not as much a household name as other fusion players like Metheney, McLaughlin, Beck is just criminal! What a master of phrasing!
my friend dragged me out in the pouring rain to drive about an hour (on a Mon. night no less) to see Tribal Tech back in 99 after the Thick release. I had heard about Scott Henderson before but didn't own any of his material. All I gotta say is I'm very happy I went! This guy is amazing, I got a chance to chat with him briefly after the show and he was very cool. I bought the Thick CD after that and now own several others.
He's one of the reasons I picked up a guitar. I liked his old jazzier stuff w. tribal tech too. He's on my top 2 favorite guitarists of all time. Up there right alongside Hendrix type fusion. Love tribal tech and a big influence of mine been listening to him since I was 16 years old. LOVE THIS VIDEO! He's got only line class coming up. Ten weeks long only 20 in a class.
My thoughts exactly. It's the coolest riff I've ever heard. I'm convinced that once I transcribe it and understand the theory behind it, I'll have absorbed what I love about Scott's playing.
Absolutely. He does take a lot of risks when he plays. He reminds me a lot of Jeff Beck. Not afraid to walk out on that ledge, musically-speaking. If he blows it, he blows it, but at least he tried. That's Beck through and through, and Henderson is the same way. You can tell Beck was a big influence on him. They also have a similar tone to their fingers. Those rich mids are there, and I don't mean his amp or guitar choice. I'm talking about his hands, the tone coming from his fingers and their connection/couping to the fretboard and strings. They become one. That's a rare quality in guitarists. This is a VERY-difficult song to pull off onstage with just a trio. Remember, the studio version has a Hammond B3, a guitar, and a baritone sax, all harmonizing together (and maybe even a second overdubbed guitar in there as well). And then you have the full horn section on top of that. It's like a trio trying to play "All Things Must Pass" in it's entirety onstage. It can't be done without a few modifications.
Una goduria per i buongustai della chitiarra elettrica. C'e' un po' di tutto in questo pezzo di S. Henderson - Funky, Fusion, Jazz fusion progressive. Molto bravo.
Every time i hear him i confirm my thought: he' s a great Jazz player, while he keeps considering himself a blues player.. not of that kind: Scott is a Jazz Genius!!
Even through a small speaker hearing that amp sounds like I’m standing next to a big 427 engine revving hard kicking out heat and shaking everything.. Lovin it. Exquisite playing.
Would be nice to have blues guitarists reacting to this performance. His phrasing is so outside the box. He has just strange ways to take you back home. A nice blues player is like a taxi cab ride where the driver is nice and is really good at telling a story. The kind that you ask them to please tell the rest, because the ride got short. This guy is kinda of an off-roader nutcase who knows what he is doing that is giving you a ride home through a "shortcut" while doing tricks and managing to drive through crazy obstacles. You get home with a "what-the-hell did just happen?" sort of face.
That's what I'm talking about. Take some chances and go outside the envelope. This is as individual and unique as it comes. Unlike a lot of guitar players just mashing the same boring stuff, Scott Henderson takes chances and experiments and willing to go where no man has gone.
Yeah, Henderson's one of those guys who never plays the same thing twice. He just plays what's inside of him. Henderson's like Jeff Beck on steroids (If Jeff had gone to music school back in the day, he'd probably sound a lot like Scott Hendersion). Those are the guitarists I look for, guys like Joe Walsh, Carlos Santana, Keith Richards & Ron Wood, Ritchie Blackmore, Doyle Bramhall II, Robben Ford and Larry Carlton, Pat Travers and Pat Thrall,, Roy Buchanan, Robben Trower (and Randy Hansen IMO, and Hendrix when he was on), Cornell Dupree, Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass (or Pat Matheny on those rare occasions where he used overdrive), Ronnie Earl, Robert Cray, Clarence Gatemouth Brown, Leo Nocentelli, Mike Campbell, Danny Gatton, Eddie Van Halen, etc. Guys who have a true connection between their soul and the instrument. They play on autopilot, improvising on the fly. That's where the real fun is IMO. Larry Carlton used to say. "I don't know what's gonna' happen, and YOU don't know what's gonna' happen." Most of the players I like use a little overdrive, but not too much. I like a lead tone I can turn down a bit and use as a rhythm tone. Anyway, I'm babble-abbling.
The only other guitar virtuoso I'd compare him with in terms of sheer talent and creativity is Jeff Beck. Creativity is off the scale and out of this world. Yes, there are lots of amazingly talented and creative players, but Scott Henderson's playing is nothing short of mind-blowing amazing. Tribal Tech for that matter was revolutionary in the world of fusion. Consistently jaw-dropping amazing.
best fusion guitar player ever (my opinion)
Scott Henderson is like the wine: while he becomes old he becomes better.
