That's very true, for instance, the L, in Chicago, goes from the suburbs and outer edges of the city to the center, making it very inefficient to use public transport to go from one suburb to another.

The problem in CS that I have found is that pedestrian and cycling paths need the same height as roads, which ofcourse is silly. 3m height for a pedestrian or cycling path is plenty, but would not be enough for a road.
With passenger trains it's not that big of a deal. It takes AMTRAK 20 seconds to go by and you get 4 of those a day if you're lucky. Freight trains it's a different story, and they usually do try and keep those from crossing as much as possible. One of those suckers can take several minutes to go by, and occasionally they'll just drop anchor in the middle of the city for half an hour. So grade crossings with freight rail (which, let's be honest, is all the rail in the US outside of the NEC) are mostly found in old city centers where they didn't know better, or out in the suburbs where a 2-mile detour is a 4-minute detour. Also bearing in mind that there's usually 1 train line going through a city of 10 million people, so for most people if there are grade crossings, the solution is "don't buy a house in that neighborhood". That's where we get expressions like "from the wrong side of the tracks", because it's pretty predictable who has no choice but living next to the Union Pacific.
I am from East Asia. When I immigrated to the West, I told my new friends that I liked metro trains. Some of them didn’t believe me, so I told them that one of my former classmates from Hong Kong was a public transport bus maniac. Eventually as I grew up, it made a lot of sense as to why my Western friends reacted the way they did.
@@alohatigers1199 That's just the point though, not everyone can afford cars. If I could commute to work on a bus I would. Instead of just driving I could read a book or play my Switch. But because our public transportation is so inefficient it would take nearly three times as long to bus, hence I have to drive and put tons of miles on my car.

I've seen the same in Japan. Kinda just depends on where you are and the lay of the land I imagine. Although I guess downtown metro is generally underground. (It's been a while too, so I might be mis-remembering)
One thing you forgot is that american cities usually have a light rail system. It’s even more common to have light rail than commuter rail in america. Another thing is that on american commuter rail systems there are very few stops in the downtown area. There are more and more stops the further out in the suburbs you go. Look at Seattle’s Sounder and Minneapolis Northstar Line for example.
In China, central railway stations are usually close to center of city, freeway system is usually is on city outskirt and not really into the city center. And metro in the inner city is usually underground

perhaps beyond the scope of this video, but public transit in larger american cities is usually 1-2 extra modes defined by the era it was built. so take the bus+amtrack of the city you had, and add anything from light rail, to streetcars, to aboveground metro, to peoplemovers, and as long as you only add one or two, and don't connect it very well with the existing bus/rail network, you've got an American city.

For Germany the distances between stops is really everywhere nearly the same. For busses 300m for really important areas (city center pedestrian area sightseeing places) 500m everywhere else in the city. For Trams = the same as busses. For Metros (here called U-Bahn) around 500m-1000m. For city trains (here called S-Bahn) 1500m-2500m. For local trains 3000m-5000m For Local express trains ~10´000m And for intercity service... well only cities/towns with population greater than around 80-120k people. And metros are only underground to underpass critical traffic areas. Metros are mostly overground in rural areas and underground in the city centre or where it needs to underpass a major street junction because tunnels and bridges are expensive. For trains it is the same. No major bridge or tunnel constructions. It is cheaper to build a street-bridge or a street underpass over a train line than building a train bridge or even underpass for a street.
I really would love to see a new series where you start building an Europe city! Well or in general I'd love to see more "tips and tricks" about european cities since I personally find them the more challenging in CS! Thanks for your great contents mate :D
I was waiting for the latest work in this series. I'm glad. Perhaps crossing the railroad tracks reminded me of the city that appeared on the stage of the "A Certain Magical Index". It seems that Southeast Asia is playing an active role as a means of transportation.
Just a nitpick. In Asia, many train stations are by elevated road. In other words, one can only access the train station through highways rather than the common roads. So maybe you can build train stations by highways.
You forgot the most imporant part in both America and Europe: Chronic underfunding. And what about public transport in more rural areas? Here in Germany at least you can consider yourself lucky if a bus stops twice daily in your village.
Also about Asia; the distinction between "commuter rail" and "subway/metro" is actually pretty fuzzy. Most subway systems come above ground on the edge of town and have their terminus in remote rural areas. Also a lot more local vs express, where the remote rural and non-hub stations are served by a separate line that shares the same track with an express line that only does interchange stations.
I’m from Houston Texas and the buses were ok part! Houston is president out so we have hov lanes. Each hov lane exit has a whole bus terminal at it! Many American cities have metros and sometimes trams (light rail) but they are all usually terrrible compared to Europe and asia
In Europe most urban rail lines will predate modern development and run in straight lines to and right through the cities. They will have use a lot embankments and cutting to keep a level grade. New roads will bridge or underpass railways. Quite a lot of Light rail/trams are often built on old decommissioned railway side lines. Buses routes will typically follow a wheel and spoke layout, in and out on main roads to suburbs dissected by orbital routes at major junctions.
The three biggest mexican cities (Mexico City 21M, Guadalajara and Monterrey 5M each) tend to be a mix between the European and American model. They have more metro and trolley coverage than its american counterparts of similar population (with the exception of NYC), but they still heavily rely on buses for everything else.
There may be exceptions. Yep, especially in the Philippines where public transport in the capital is just two overground rail with no alternatives plus congested bus and jeep lanes that are unidirectional.
Very well done! In bigger european cities, there is a visibible developement away from terminus stations to central stations which are not terminus (I am lacking the proper word but you get what I mean^^)
Here in the Philippines (South East Asia), our railway (metro) system is mostly aligned above the median of the avenues. If it transitions to underground from elevated, the alignment is under the same road-so that when it goes elevated again, it won't be that hard to do so. 🇵🇭🚈

The rationale I've heard for LA's lack of any semblance of a developed metro system, other than cost, is that there aren't many predictable traffic patterns. Everyone is driving everywhere all the time. Although, there is somewhat of a metro, that I think just links some of the further out cities to downtown, but I've never used it 🤷♀️
Little comment on Europe, tram and metro usually don't come together. Nevertheless, metro often goes ground level in the outskirts or in places where you would expect a tram (it's usually one service, but game trams can't go underground). If you want to include an additional tram, it's rather for touristic or historical purposes, it won't cover any areas built after say 1930.
The Asian one highly depends on which country in Asia you're in. Countries like China, Japan or South Korea have great train networks, poorer Asian nations in the south east often barely have any.
HK transportation style in CSL: Train+Metro : There are station-base development over the station, double deck tram, Metro only a main stream line along/looping the harbour urban area. Bus: bus lane & highway buss interchange, especially at the either side of any water-crossings & tunnels Airport must have high speed railway connection
The thing about Europe is that countries are politically much farther to the left than America is. This means higher taxes, and more public services for less cost (In the Nordics some of it is even free). Public Transport is an example.
I know people have been using the word suburb a lot, but I think it would be more sensible to compare planned residential cities. (i.e. "suburbia" in the US, conurbated towns in Europe, planned bedtowns in East/Southeast Asia) they could even be connected to the city centres too, with metro/commuter rail etc !

中国的北方和平原地区的路网基本都是在横平竖直 比较方正 热衷于造环线和放射形的高速
南方因为江河湖海比较多 桥/高架/涵洞的使用比例也飘高 所以路网歪七竖八 无法用东西南北指路 只能在比较碎片的区域内做有限的优化
加上比较喜欢造主路不怎么优化次等道路的习惯 导致高峰期经常堵车
再者是中国的客运铁路系统的运载量是全世界最牛逼的 不接受反驳 ps：虽然德国西门子技术不错 但是毁在和低速列车公用轨道这一条上经常晚点
至于铁路线路分两种情况 传统的低俗列车使用传统的有砟轨道都是直接铺在地上的 和欧洲的做法没什么区别
但是高铁列车轨道比较偏爱使用桥梁 隧道 减少对地面交通的干扰 也能减少对与土地的占用 降低了征收成本
地铁建设的条件之一：城市总人口超过700万，市区常住人口在300万人以上
总里程已经在世界名列前茅，但是规划水平亟待提升，需要向Tokyo学习。
公交系统就那样 基本只能覆盖城区热点地区

In Colombia, the bus is all. Bogota, where I live, with 10 M people haven't metro, train or nothing else, only bus.

In Europe most urban rail lines will predate modern development and run in straight lines to and right through the cities. They will have use a lot embankments and cutting to keep a level grade. New roads will bridge or underpass railways. Quite a lot of Light rail/trams are often built on old decommissioned railway side lines. Buses routes will typically follow a wheel and spoke layout, in and out on main roads to suburbs dissected by orbital routes at major junctions.

The three biggest mexican cities (Mexico City 21M, Guadalajara and Monterrey 5M each) tend to be a mix between the European and American model. They have more metro and trolley coverage than its american counterparts of similar population (with the exception of NYC), but they still heavily rely on buses for everything else.

Yep, especially in the Philippines where public transport in the capital is just two overground rail with no alternatives plus congested bus and jeep lanes that are unidirectional.

In bigger european cities, there is a visibible developement away from terminus stations to central stations which are not terminus (I am lacking the proper word but you get what I mean^^)
Here in the Philippines (South East Asia), our railway (metro) system is mostly aligned above the median of the avenues. If it transitions to underground from elevated, the alignment is under the same road-so that when it goes elevated again, it won't be that hard to do so. 🇵🇭🚈

In america public transit to my knowledge is REALLY different of europe's in the usa the use metro but i never hear about good transit systems in america more about europe
The rationale I've heard for LA's lack of any semblance of a developed metro system, other than cost, is that there aren't many predictable traffic patterns. Everyone is driving everywhere all the time. Although, there is somewhat of a metro, that I think just links some of the further out cities to downtown, but I've never used it 🤷♀️
Little comment on Europe, tram and metro usually don't come together. Nevertheless, metro often goes ground level in the outskirts or in places where you would expect a tram (it's usually one service, but game trams can't go underground). If you want to include an additional tram, it's rather for touristic or historical purposes, it won't cover any areas built after say 1930.

The Asian one highly depends on which country in Asia you're in. Countries like China, Japan or South Korea have great train networks, poorer Asian nations in the south east often barely have any.

Train+Metro : There are station-base development over the station, double deck tram, Metro only a main stream line along/looping the harbour urban area.
Bus: bus lane & highway buss interchange, especially at the either side of any water-crossings & tunnels
Airport must have high speed railway connection
The thing about Europe is that countries are politically much farther to the left than America is. This means higher taxes, and more public services for less cost (In the Nordics some of it is even free). Public Transport is an example.

I know people have been using the word suburb a lot, but I think it would be more sensible to compare planned residential cities. (i.e. "suburbia" in the US, conurbated towns in Europe, planned bedtowns in East/Southeast Asia)
they could even be connected to the city centres too, with metro/commuter rail etc !
